Scrimping $$$ in order to *wildly* splurge!

So, does anybody else check sales to get the best price on cat litter, then run out and get $160 highlights? Because I do! I think it all evens out in the end, but I thought of this during the weekend, when my sister and I had the most fabulous shopping trip! :7

There is this killer mall in Northern VA called Tyson's Corner, and there is a Ritz-Carlton attached. We always used to wish that we could afford a room there to have a "girl's weekend", but thought it was out of our reach. Well, it turns out a room there on the weekend was $150, so we split it, and had the best time! Let me tell you, the Ritz knows how to take care of a person!! It was so oomfy-la-la-chi-chi-poo-poo-chocolates-on-the-pillow and everything! So we got our hair done, had lunch, shopped some more, and ate Chinese food in our PJ's while sitting on down comforters!

All this to say, now I'm back to being prudent with money. I never buy expensive beauty products, I stick to the basics like Pond's cold cream (my dermatologist says that's perfect), I don't buy jewelry or lots of shoes or spend money on lottery tickets. But that just means I get to spend it on stuff where it really counts!

So....anyone else got a story? :7 What do you splurge on?!

I splurge on exercise equipment, exercise clothes, exercise dvd's, etc. You get the picture. :) Oh, and I splurge on food from veganessentials.com a lot.
It sounds like you had a fabulous weekend. I sure do miss Tyson's Corner. Nothing I have found in Germany even comes close to that mall!

Oh, Lisa. That trip sounds simply heavenly!!! What a way to get pampered, hugh?

Like Carolyn, I splurge on health-related stuff...workout equipment, etc.

I pinch every single penny to get 10 cents, each and every day. Things are financially very tight (as they are for many folks), but when it comes ot anything health-related for me or my kids, I'll SPEND! I'm going on the RT in July, AND I just signed on with a personal trainer for the first time in my entire life! (and she's not cheap)

My only indulgence is in exercise videos. I've learned to cut back on other things to alleviate the guilt. I quit going to an expensive hair stylist, I get my movies from a local library instead of an online subscription plan, and I cook most meals from scratch, so DH doesn't mind the fact that my exercise DVD's are taking over our entire bedroom closet!:p

I've never been to Tyson's Corner, but I have been to a couple of Ritz Carlton hotels, and yes, they are FABULOUS! Just going to the hotel IS a vacation. Seriously, you don't have to leave the hotel. Everything you could possibly want or need is under their roof. And let me tell you, they are there to pamper and serve you. Good choice! We all deserve to splurge every now and then ;)

Oh Lisa, sounds like you had a FABULOUS time!!

My company has an office at Tysons Corner and although I've been there several times, I've never had a chance to walk over to the mall. I'm going to have to the next time though!!

I splurge on my hair (highlights) and Coach purses. That's about it. ;-) }(

My mom's boyfriend clips coupons and shops sales like he's living on the tightest of budgets. This couldn't be farther from the truth. He'd just rather save his hard earned money and spend it things he enjoys so he shops cheap and then goes down to Atlantic City frequently and has a blast!:7

Nothin' wrong with that!:)

Hi Lisa,

I've stayed at that Ritz Carlton at Tyson's II several times over the years. Isn't it great being connected to the mall and you can just walk around and window shop? :D

For splurges, I save my money and book business class tickets with my miles to great vacation spots (I did this to Italy last year). Then, I take the money I saved on airfare and use it for my great vacations. Still trying to book a couple of business class tickets to New Zealand....this is definitely a future splurge! :D

I shop Costco and buy some food items that I wouldn't normally buy if the cost more.

Also buy exercise equipment because it helps keep me healthier - and DH plays hockey so I spend less than he does on a yearly basis.

We "splurge" on NHL tickets but don't take many vacations - and he wanted a much nicer car than I did so we have quite a "nicer car" payment now too !

We do save quite well for retirement and I rarely get my hair done.

My .02 about my choices is simply that - we all have a budget and hopefully are spending our $$ on that which is most important to us.

I don't say "I can't afford it", I say "It isn't in my budget" because I am the one who makes up my budget ! :+

>I don't say "I can't afford it", I say "It isn't in my budget"
>because I am the one who makes up my budget ! :+

Brilliant! I'm always whining about how "I can't afford this..." or "I can't afford that..." Now I should just say that it's not in my budget. Changes the whole mindset!!

I splurge on aveda hair products and an upscale salon. I have very fine hair that lays flat on my head without the right cut and products. That and exercise equipment and DVD's, although that has slowed down now after buying my squat rack and STS. I promised DH I wouldn't buy anything else for awhile.
