Scrapbooking

Me, me, me! I love scrapbooking and have a whole table downstairs set up for it. Haven't had a lot of time to work on any pages lately, but I'm hoping to get back into it soon.

I'm doing a book for my sister's 50th. It was last September *ahem* I kind of lost my inspiration after doing the first 10 pages or so and just got it back, so now I'm raring to get back at it. My layouts take a long time though (I'm not terribly creative) so it's a slow process.

I always have good intentions to finish my projects, but I get sidetracked somehow....but I do love it. I started when I gave birth to my two kids. I love it. I probably spend too much money on scrapbooking stuff, but I can't help it when I see something really cute or nice.

Shelley,

Have you checked out online scrapbooking websites for ideas? They also sell scrapbooking magazines. I get a lot of ideas from those places.

Ok Limecat aka Shelly aka allwildgirl...heck no I don't srapbook, wish I did, but I am just pure sorry when it comes to that kind of stuff...I didn't even get past the second month of my 3 year old son baby book...

Is there any other names I should know you by???

I have to get "inspired" or else I just sit there staring at the white page for an hour. I usually get in the mood to do it and spend an entire weekend putting together like 20 pages. Then I get busy again and do not get to it for a few more months. My sister is really into stamping (she use to sell for the Angel Co.) and she has some books that give ideas for cards and scrapbook pages. I am always "stealing" ideas from her. :) Helps when the creativity just isn't there!

I check out sites and magazines all the time for inspiration. Sometimes if I'm in a lull, that doesn't even help! I'd like to try stamping. A friend of mine uses stamps a lot and they look fantastic.

And yes, I spend too much as well, though it's harder to find nice stuff here. I was in heaven last summer when I was in the US and went to a Hobby Lobby!

Hi Shelley,

There is a scrap book store that is huge here on Queen Street in the Beaches.. around the corner from where i live. It is about 3000 sf of pure scrap booking supplies and classes. You should check it out if you are ever in Toronto. It is on Queen East between Woodbine/ lake shore and Winners Circle (my street)... not too far from you live i think. I do not scrap book.. but this store is amazing. People come from all over Toronto to this one as it is so big with so much stuff. The paper alone is mind boggling.

I had a scrapbooking question for you scrapbookers...do you use double sided tape or the acid-free glue? I've been finding that when I use the acid-free glue my things don't stick that great. I could be using a bad brand. I like the double sided tapes, but they can get pricey. Any ideas or suggestions?

Lisa

Brigitte - thanks for the info!

Lisa - I use the double sided tape that comes in a little dispenser, and for my pictures I use the little glue dots. I can't remember the brand of either, I'm afraid.

I love scrapbooking! I actually go away to a bed and breakfast for entire weekends with other scrappers (about 4-5 a year). It is therapy , as I am with other Moms and working on family albums, so not as much guilt for being away from my family...

I use paper from Wal-Mart or JoAnn Fabrics (when they are on sale). I get my albums exclusively from Creative Memories. Their albums are about $36 each, but very nice and durable. I also get all my pages and page protectors from Creative Memories. I pick up stickers and other die-cuts from stores at different times, but on my weekends, I just get the CM stuff.

I have a CM consultant (I order my albums. etc. from her) and I go to her house every so often to scrapbook. It is free to go to her house and a pain to pack up all my stuff, but I never get anything done at home and the creativity just comes better for me with the pressure of so many hours/the weekend to get pages done!

My kids LOVE their books and we read them as bedtime stories. I feel good knowing that I have written down their stories as I remember them, in case something ever happens to me...

Check out www.creativememories.com TONS of page ideas there and you don't have to use their stuff...just get the ideas and inspiration!

Hi scrappers,

What's the best way to begin when you have 4 sons - ages 25 down to 9 - and you've never scrapped a page of their lives? (And I have thousands of photos) How do you get their entire lives caught up before you die? I am serious. I have supplies, but stare at the enormity of the project and freeze. I am actually quite artistic and creative, but I seem to have beginners block.

TIA

Me! Although I haven't done much lately, and now I'm getting ready to move back to the US so kind of busy with that. I love it, though! I also like making cards and doing other crafty type stuff.:D

You just start somewhere! Just pick a year and start there. Don't worry about things being in order (if you can do that)...My books are basically in order, but I often find pictures after I have done a book and add them in somewhere else. I try to put a date on every page (month and year, or just year if I can't remember).

We have people that join late in their families (scrapbooking), and they don't really have a goal. They just do what pages they can when they can.

When you pull out the pictures, sit and go back in time. The memories will come back to you and that is what you need to journal (write down the stories). My pictures often tell one story and then while I am scrapping, other stories come to me that were not captured in pictures. Those stories still get written down. (Maybe we were sledding and the kids said some cute things...I write that down, but then maybe we all went inside and made hot chocolate together...I write that down, too).

You family will appreciate ANYTHING that you can get down in a scrapbook. My pages are not anything that would be impressive to anyone else. Usually they are just the pictures cropped and a strip and a triangle or just a simple piece of paper under the whole page that complements the pictures.

HTH!
Jenn

Melody - I agree with Jenn. Just pick something and start and it will fall in place after that. I don't worry so much about things being in chronological order. I'm also not good at journaling yet, but it will come. I guess I just have to be more confident in my writing skills.

Shelley,

When do you have TIME to scrapbook?! Between working, your workouts, your family, and your social obligation to post to the forums every 10 minutes, how do you fit in scrapbooking?

I hope you scrapbooked your P90X transformation! And your favourite rotations. I'll bet you could get creative with those.

Cheers,
Sandra
-not a scrapbooker.

Jenn (and Shelley)

Thanks for the suggestions and motivation. I am a bit of a chronological freak (what the heck does that mean?) I have journals of memories and my mind never forgets what was going on in a photo. I think I'll begin with now and work my way backwards.

Again, thanks.

ETA: Does anyone do digital scrapbooks? There's some awesome free software available and even bound books into which you can place pages you have designed on computer and printed out. They look like books bound by a printer.

Melvin - I have a friend who scrapbooks digitally and her layouts are gorgeous. She made up a book for me and it's beautiful.

I enjoy scrapbooking but I am very picky to make sure I am using archival quality materials. I buy the photo albums and such from Light Impressions. I also like to do "web scrapbooking" with blogs. I'm working on one of each for our hikes.
