Hello Catheites,

I'm considering trying Schwan's Home Delivery Food Service for a deviation of constant trips to the grocery store. Granted, I only go once a week as it is.
But, in your opinion, is the quality worth the price?
Your input will be very helpful. I just received their catalogue and everything looks so delicious.

TIA.

Hi-

We get Schwans delivered to our house, and the one thing we get over and over is their unbreaded chicken breasts. I love the fact that they are individually frozen, and there is never ANY waste. No little pieces of fat or veins or other membranes. I always think I'll buy chicken in bulk at the store and individually wrap it, but I never do. This has been worth the money, to me. A serving is like $1.25. I think it's worth the prep time savings. Of course, their ice cream is better than any other, but we don't eat ice cream, right?

We love our Schwann's man! As mentioned above, those chicken breasts, individually frozen are great. They have lots of good frozen fruits and veggies, and shrimp too (all you do on the shrimp is run it under water for 3 minutes). I don't think they do organic though, which is a bummer since I am trying to head that way as much as possible. But they seem to be a good company that produces good food. You do have to be careful of sodium in some of their stuff, and some of it is just plain treacherous for a diet/clean eating routine! That said, my daughter loves their chicken bites and fries, and they are a better choice than most out there - I just put them in the toaster oven, add some veggies and fruit, a glass of Horizon chocolate milk, and she is good to go. Soooo, we always get something from our man!

Mahi-Mahi is a must try

First a disclaimer - DH works in Schwan's general office (although not in sales) and we live in the town where their general office is located. Therefore, I am a customer and have been for years.

I agree that the chicken breasts are excellent. I like that they are pretty much a uniform size which I have seldom found in the frozen chicken breasts in the grocery store.

I am most especially fond of the Mahi-Mahi. Most of their seafood is excellent (especially since we live about as far away from a coast as you can get so fresh is not an option here), but the Mahi-Mahi is my favorite.

I also adore their guacamole - it is 2 avocado halves vacuum packed with the jalapeno, cilantro, tomatoes and garlic. You just thaw and smush it in the bag to make guacamole - it is so easy. This is now only available by pre-order however.

They have also started offering a cooked brown rice frozen in a bag that only takes 3-4 minutes in the microwave and tastes so much better than the ready to serve brown rice on the shelves in the store. I know I could cook my brown rice ahead and freeze it myself, but in the summer I don't seem to find the time.

The convenience factor is great - you can order ahead online or by phone and they will just deliver it to your door. You do pay for convenience, although if you are careful with your purchases, I don't think it that the prices are too bad.

Again, please don't think I am trying to sell anything - I'm just sharing my opinion on a topic that is near and dear to my heart - food! :p

Hello Lori Ann,
Where are their general offices? What do you think of those ice cream poppers? Do you like the LiveSmart line? My neighbours get Schwan delivery (one for chicken and one for lunch meals) so I told my neighbours for their guy to drop off a catalogue for me.
TIA for the info.

Hello Lori Ann,

TIA for the info.

Their general offices and some of their production facilities are located in Marshall, MN. DD liked the ice cream poppers a lot. I prefer the strawberry supreme frozen yogurt myself.

They are adding more and more items to the LiveSmart line all the time. I still think that the sodium levels are high, but fat and calorie content are good on those items. I like the LiveSmart Fire-roasted veggie pizza on whole-wheat crust and the turkey in gravy is very good on mashed potatoes and makes for a really quick supper.

They have a lot to choose from in their catalog and the nutrition info is all available online so you can make wise choices before you buy.

They make a good pumpkin pie also!! Although I have found a reduced calorie pumpkin pie that cannot be beat so I no longer by theirs.
Their cataolg makes my mouth water & my butt grow!!

Thanks for the opinons. And, Lori Ann, on answering my questions. I think I might try it on a trial basis for awhile like the LiveSmart line. The catalogue makes me hungry going through it though.

We used to get Schwan's, and did have some favorites, but it just got way too pricey. I found I was spending too much, they added delivery fee, and my particular driver gave me a guilt trip when I didn't have an order or only a couple of things.

So, we're Schwanless, and surviving just fine:) That being said, they do have good food - I agree about the seafood and the ice cream especially!

We have Schwan's....

and I like their LiveSmart line. I do think they are pricey & don't order much. My dh grew up on Schwan's ice cream so I buy him the vanilla & butter pecan. I like their sugar-free fudge sticks for a 50 cal summer treat.

I see that their new LiveSmart pizzas are whole grain w/ flax, so they are trying to get some healthier options! Their frozen veggies are good, I like the Mediterranean blend. Oh, and my family loves their multi-grain bread loaf, you just thaw it or you can bake also.

My delivery guy comes every other Wed. Side note: The last time he was here, he ran over my garbage can, but he called to tell me he did it and paid me for a new one!

I have a friend who loves Schwan's...all this talk has made me go online and request a catalog!!!

More than once I have seen and stopped to get Schwans....love the frozen veggies, and stuffed pretzels. A little pricely but wonderful!

Thanks for the info. again, the more opinions the better. My neighbours just get the chicken. Any more will be good too. What about the cookies n cream ice cream?

I get Schwans. I mostly get the Chicken Breasts. I love that they are individually wrapped, like a previous poster mentioned. My DH loves their ice cream. They have the nutritional info. for all their food online.
