Salmon ?'s

I decided to try to add some salmon into my diet on my salad today and opened a can of pink salmon and it was a bit hard to get past the black skin and also what looked like a spine and some very tiny white bones. Is there an easier way? Can you buy it de-skinned and de-boned. I picked and picked til I got some pieces without that stuff but it wasn't very appetizing looking at it. Eeeew! It did taste a bit like tuna which I like. (Out of a can.) Thanks for any help. I am trying to put some more protein and EFA's into my diet. http://www.fun-gifs.de/animiertegifs/fische/9.gif

KathyH!

I didn't want to bring my whining thread back up again so I was wondering if you could explain what is "wrong" with canned chicken or tuna in water? I know the more natural, the better but thought that the canned was an okay choice. BTW, I DO have a George Forman grill and love it! We do cook chicken tender on it from time to time. Sometimes, it just seems easier to open a can of fatfree poultry. Just curious your thoughts. Thanks for your time.

Hi Debbie! Love the fish!!LOL You always manage to make me laugh. I see your trying to incorporate fish into your diet. You can buy cans of salmon from Trader Joe's. I don't know if you have a TJ's in your area. They come deboned & skinless. I also purchase tilapia (its a white fish similar to flounder). The package has about 4-5 fillets which bake up in 20 min. HTH, Kathy:D

We must've been posting at the exact same time & just saw another post from you. Chicken from a can makes me think its processed for some reason. I don't have a problem, however, eating the salmon out of a can. The tuna from a can may have mercury in it so I haven't touched tuna in quite some time (from a can anyway). I just would prefer you to eat everything in as natural a state as possible. I know how convenient those little cans are but I usually take about an hour out of my Sunday to do all of my cooking. Also I found out from Bobbi that salmon should be red sockeye from the Pacific NOT the Atlantic as fish from the Atlantic may be contaminated due to the water. These are just my thoughts on canned products. Take care, Kathy:D (Now I wish I knew where you found your little icons from)LOL

Hi Debbie,
I purchase two pounds of salmon every week! We love the fish. I've cooked it a few different ways, but our favorite is baking in the oven. I sprinkle Adobe (hmmm, not sure if that's it, but it's something like that name), with some black pepper. I've never noticed any bones. You can ask the "fish person" to remove the skin if you'd like; however when you bake it, it easily comes right off. It's also not thick and nasty. I like cold too.
I've never tried the canned salmon.

Boy, I hope there's nothing wrong with canned tuna/albacore. I eat that too!

Debbie,
You can buy Salmon ready to eat in those pouches like the tuna. I rince my canned tuna, salmon and chicken in a colander to remove the salty water & broth everything seems to be packed in. I too stand and dig out the skin and bones. Fresh is so much better but cans and pouches do have convenience.

Thanks Kath! I wish we had a Trader Joe's nearby. I don't think we do. Hmmm, wonder if I contaminated myself??? YIKES! My can says Alaska! I have heard of Tilapia before. I'll take a look at my grocery store next time. I agree, the less processed, the better. I am trying real hard to do the "clean" thing. I have cooked the boneless chicken breast and tenders before in batches and store them in the frig for a couple days or so. Just been sooo busy lately that I need to stock up on some healthy foods that I have gotten low on. Thanks for your help. MUCH appreciated!

Susan and Diane Sue!

Thanks so much. DianeSue~I've seen the pouches of Tuna before. I'll check and see if they have the salmon. Thanks for the rinsing idea too. Susan~I'll see if I can find that seasoning also. If I can doctor it up, I'm sure I'll like it better. Thanks for replying to me.

Deb! Your cracking me up over here! No you haven't contaminated yourself. You said the can says Alaska & that's a good thing! Some other fish that are very lean are halibut, all shell fish, orange roughy just to name some more. In the meantime, you could use legumes too in your salads. Good luck on the move! Take care sweetie, Kathy:*

I love fresh salmon, but salmon in a can is just plain disgusting. I buy a big piece of salmon at Costo and cut it into individual filets. I don't cook salmon indoors. It is a very oily fish and the cooking odors linger forever. Cooked on the grill, outside, delicious and not stinky.

RE: Susan and Diane Sue!

Deb - Wanted to add that I cook fresh sock-eye salmon (marinated with a salmon marinade or whatever you like) on the George Foreman Grill. I also broil it and cook on outside grill. It's wonderful all ways!

Oh, BUT I DO!!! I use black beans all the time. LOVE 'em! I had some shrimp on my salad yesterday. I am into walnuts right now. I am trying not to eat too many because of their fat content but know they are a good fat. I love FF Cottage Cheese with fresh cilantro and walnuts! Yuuum. Or, walnuts in my salads. Thanks for the extra ideas and the good wishes on the move. Speaking of...I am supposed to be packing right now!

Thanks!

Thanks Mar and Runninggal! I'll keep those tips in mind. I am going to check out our BJ's & Sam's Club to see if they carry some. Thanks for the ideas.

RE: Thanks!

Just don't eat too much. It's laden with mercury I read that if you are under two hundred pounds a 6 ounce can is too much. Look into Tongol tuna. It's labelled chunk light in the US but it's similar and very high quality. They are caught small and don't have those mercury concentrations.

Check this out too: Line caught, small fish, less mercury!

RE: Thanks!

I buy my salmon from this company www.vitalchoice.com. I never cared for salmon but a friend suggested this website and now I LOVE salmon. I trust this company more than I trust TJ and other places. They even sell canned tuna on here. I recommend this company!

RE: Thanks!

Another salmon lover here. I hate the skin though... Since the controversy about farm raised salmons I buy wild salmon. I grill it and eat it with only soy sauce on it. For some reason I never came to like canned salmon. Mari

RE: Susan and Diane Sue!

Deb,
I add egg white or egg sub to canned salmon and tuna + Old bay seasoning, chopped bell pepper and onion (white, red or green), salt and pepper. Make a thick pattie consistency and brown in a skillet with a tab. olive oil. I serve them with a dollop of low fat sour cream...try it, you might like it. deb:)

Debbie:

Canned pink salmon is good to have on hand for tasty sandwiches. The trick is to keep the can in the fridge and chill for a couple of hours before eating. Tastes way better. By all means take the skin off, and perhaps take out the central vertabrae bones, but leave the others and mash them in with the fish meat because they will add calcium to your sandwich and are perfectly healthy for you to eat. We have done so in my family for years.

So, chill the tin, dump the skin, use fresh brown bread and add a dash of pepper and thin, cucumber slices. Fabulous and it's the only way to eat tinned salmon!

Oh crap! I eat tons of albacore and salmon. I dont eat cow or pig. I eat 4 to 6oz. of albacore each day with lunch and 4oz salmon for dinner.
What does mercury do to you?

Susan!

Well, we KNOW it doesn't make one post a lot because I post a LOT and never eat it.:7

Thanks Mari and Clare!

Those both sound good and it's making me hungry! But, do I dare eat more today??? Hubby is working late tonight and I don't know what to eat. I think I'll save it for tomorrow.
