Running with DOMS

MAYNARDSMOM

I am the occassional runner. It has actually been quite a while since I have ran but went for 3 miles Thursday - FELT GREAT!!! Woke up Friday with very sore inner thighs ???? Muscle Endurance was on tap so I did that just fine, no problem. Felt good this am so I went for a 3 1/2 mile run. That was 4 hours ag & I'm starting to wonder if I will be able to walk tomorrow ???
Is it better to skip running if you are experiencing DOMS or plow thru it?
I'm going to go pop some ibuprofen now

Tami, I plow right on thru it, as long as it's 'normal' DOMS and not an injury pain. Does that make sense? ENJOY DOMS! :p

I am exactly the same today.. I did Gym style Legs yesterday, but I upped my weights, so I upped my DOMS too! I plan on doing Amy Bento's Kickbox Xtreme later... but currently am struggling with the propect of standing! But if you plough through, so will I :D

I also "plow" through it. If I have DOMS, running almost always loosens me up makes it feel better. Just make sure to do a very thorough stretch, especially for your inner thighs, and you'll be fine. :)

Ditto for me. I always feel the DOMs loosen up after a run. Stretching is so important too, ITA!

I usually run through the DOMS too, but make sure to engage in a thorough warm up. usually by the end of the warm up, there's enough blood flow to allow for a little stretch of th muscles that ache the most. Them you just run right through it and by the end and the next day, very little of the DOMS is left. At least, for me! I did serious leg work on Tues for several hours, started stiffening up Weds, and had butt and inner thigh and calf aches still on Thurs. After my run on Thurs, I just felt gooooooooooooood!

It depends on how bad it hurts. Also, if you think it was the run that made the doms and not the weights. I suspect it was the weights. I would use a course that had less hills if I had doms. After a while you will find that you just don't get any doms on the jogging even if it is a tough up hill course.

Oh, the challenges on trying to run when you have DOMS in your legs!! Its amazing how much more difficult it is trying to run on legs that feel like somebody has tied bricks to them! :)

For me, if I have bad DOMS in my legs from weight training , I try not to run on them the next day, but I do try to do some sort of cardio to help get that lactic acid out, but its usually low impact (Arc Traininer) or more upperbody focused ( Kickboxing DVD) so my legs have a chance to recover a bit from the intensity that a run would put on them.

Also, is your Leg DOMS the worst the day after your workout or two days after? For me, mine is way worse two days after.. ie if I did legs on Wed, then on Friday I am super sore!
I usually space my runs so that I have two consecutive days off of running post legs and then get back at it for this exact reason. ( if my schedule allows that is.) If I don't, I see quite a decrease in my performance.

Take care, Lynn M.

I actually moved to lower weight lower body work, such as plyo and more body weight exercises, to avoid DOMS during runs. Maybe wimpy, but right now, running is my priority rather than building strength.

Lynn, it's the second day with me too! I'm hobbling so badly! Unless you do a leg workout, you don't understand how bad the DOMS are! Everyone laughs when i hobble around, but they wouldn't be laughing if they'd done it! he hee

It's been two days since I did legs.. I'm due to do MIS today, is it wise when I still can hardly walk? or is it good to just go right through it?

My concern with running with bad DOMS (if I have light DOMS, I don't worry) is that I will end up altering my stride slightly to compensate for the pain, and end up injuring myself. I will workout, but as running is so physically demanding, I'm not willing to take the risk. I also know which workouts typically give me DOMS, so I avoid those before I run.

I woke up this moring (Sunday) & was able to walk just fine!! :D:D:D
I guess the running yesterday actually helped them. I can feel a few small DOMS in there but nothing bad at all!!
Thanks!! I plan to throw in a running day this week also. Our weather here in NY has been so great I hate to miss out since I know it will be a long winter w/o outdorr running. Temps have been in the upper 20's or 30's in the am which I found to be great. Put on just the right amount of clothing. gloves comeoff about 1/2way then shortly after the coat gets unzipped & I'm good for the rest of the way home!
