Runner's Check-In 05/23

Hey, ladies. QUick question for you all. I ran my first ever marathon at DIsney this past January in 4:55 and change. My goal was 5 hours, so I hit the mark. That was my first race in over 3 years and my intro this addictive sport.

As you know, I've been running local races and doing well. Runner's World Half marathon time 1:51:10. A recent 4 miler was 33 minutes and change. OTher 5Ks were about paced anywhere between 7:30 and 8:45 minute miles.

Here's the question......for my upcoming Marine Corps marathon in October. Do you think it's realistic for me to shoot for shaving off 30 minutes from my DIsney debut? Can I do 4:20 for MCM in Oct?

The reason I'm asking is because they offer training plans for various times and I want to use that info to incorporate into the plan that I am right now working up. I don't want to hurt myself, either, but I love a challenge.

What are your thoughts? Is 30 minutes realistic to take off a second marathon???

Gayle

eta: that I know just because I commit to a certain time goal, my progress can me monitored during the training and the actual marathon itself. I just wanted to get some EXPERT advice from you ladies!

WOW!! Ya’ll are just amazing! Late congratulations to the racers last weekend, my goodness ya’ll are faster than cheetahs!! I am happy and proud to see a lot of ongoing improvement and fitness gains for many of you. Great work! Thanks for sharing-always inspiring!! And thanks to all for the continued good thoughts regarding the DD. Uggh is all I can say right now, and that I hope this too shall pass!! We were out of town for a few days and then busy with other things, but I have been able to get in a few workouts where I can. I plan on running 4 miles this evening and then follow up with some good stretching. I ordered Bryan Kest’s (AKA Mr. YP) other CD with 3 power yoga workouts on them. I can’t wait to get them as he is the best so far with the yoga workouts. Oh, and as Elaine has offered, I too have the Runner’s World Running for Women book that I am finished with if anyone is interested in having.

Sarah!! Thank you for sharing your flying pig photos. They are very heart warming and I actually got all choked up looking at the hugging photos with your family. Wow, again congratulations on a very well run marathon; I just know you’ll BQ in the Fall, cuz you are such a bad @ss and you rock!!!

Gayle – I’m sure you’ll find a way to run with DS. I’m so excited for you to run MC Marathon. There’s another I would like to do someday. The only thing probably missing from your training routine is some Bryan Kest…..hee (enable) hee (enable) hee… Oh, and I think you should jog/walk the 5K with your mom. Very heart warming that you have inspired her, Gayle, you’re such a good person!

Marcia – good luck with the MD appt and the run. I have the same problem sometimes with late nights affecting the next day running workouts…

Karen – Great job with your running, girl! WOW…and as usual, I love your enthusiasm.

Carole – Yay! I love massages..hmm maybe that’s what I need is to book myself a massage… Also, I’m working with my artist DD on the “Super Carole” symbol for your running hat….

Wendy! - As I said to Karen, great job with your running! WOW, you are really showing some fast improvements and I can’t wait until you take it to the streets. Be careful though, as it is different from the treadmill. Have fun this weekend!

Jess – Hi Jess, and I definitely think you are a cheetah in human disguise!

Elaine – Howdy, um…so are you competing with Carole now on who is the master enbabler here? LOL.. I bet that Wendy will have a baby jogger in no time after she takes her running to the streets! And I loved your story about the poppy seed muffin. We have drug testing at work too and that actually is our little joke about NOT eating the muffins. Step away from the poppyseed muffin! LOL Oh, and hey, I missed the unveiling of Elaine’s St. George marathon training plan”, so I would like to see it too if you don’t mind.

Shelly – Oh good, that interval run is actually called the “bionic woman interval run”.

Christine – Hi there! Yeah, I tortured myself on Sunday with some lower body work..ughh…

Matea- howdy! And good job with the 5 miles…what is “tough core”? Is that a premix on the Coremax dvd?

Hi to anyone else today!!

Thomasina

Sarah-I forgot to say you look AWESOME! I checked out the Flying Pig pictures and got choked up too! Brings back great memories! You look FANTASTIC!!!!!! Great job, again!

>I hope everyone has a great workout (or massage) today!

Oh, wow!!!! Amazing pics, you look so great!!! You are so beautiful! Just curious, what was your time? How long ago was this? (sorry, still new here!)

And as for running outside, I broke my treadmill (yes, I'm hard on treadmills I guess!) so I was forced to run outside. I had run for about a year w/ only running a few times outside before I did my first 5K last year. Then I was hooked on outdoor running. Now I love it!!! It's hard to juggle w/ young kids, I have to get up at 5 or 5:15 to get my early runs in before my dh goes to work. It's hard at first but your body adjusts. I can run in the evenings also, but I enjoy the time w/ my family & it just seems hard because I can't run on a full tummy & I never seem to run as well then. Have fun doing hill repeats, I love the hills!!! (my running buddy calls me the hill killer!!! ;-) )

ROFL- that is too funny!!! I didn't used to think of myself as so fast but I seem to be picking up speed lately! I'm not complaining though!

I didn't get to post about your dd & I'm not sure of the whole situation, but I'm sorry you're having troubles!! The teen years scare me as I have 3 dd's!!

Attention Wine Country 1/2 marathoners!!

When I initially signed up for the 1/2 the thinking was that we'd make a family vacation out of it but now it looks like I'll be heading up there on my own. I might have a non-running friend who lives in Clovis join me, but that's beside the point. I'm wondering where you all are staying, when you are arriving and when you are leaving. I think I should look into making hotel reservations pretty soon!

>Jess-You and all the other ladies on here who manage to juggle
>being a great mom and a great athlete are really an amazing
>inspiration to me! You can thank the leg drills for the glute
>DOMS today;-) I love all of the Coremaxes, they are a
>fantastic addition to your ab endurance!
>

Thanks! I have had to get used to getting up early & squeezing in workouts during naptimes! It's worth it though, I love being a healthy example to my kiddos! They all love to run, bike, and exercise w/ Mommy. My dh is an outdoors type of guy too, he prefers biking to running though (he has asthma & it's hard on him). We do lots of hiking, canoeing, and other fun stuff in the summer time, I can't wait!

Yep, I'm feeling the glutes for sure! Ok, I'd better get in my PUB while I have the chance!! I mainly have done Pilates for my abs which has really shrunk my waist & defined my abs. If only there were a magic DVD for stretch marks & loose skin- gotta love my 3 kiddos for that!!! :p

Gayle - I would love to say yes 30 min is doable with the right plan but I will leave that to the experts on this panel and learn from what they tell you. I was happy to have eveyone encourage me to do the half because when I was at home I was thinking can this be done. Now I know it can. So I'm thinking they will say the same.

Thomasina- Oh another Yummypants dvd. I'm jealous.

Christine- OOHHH a torture workout. Now you need a massage. I bet Carole is having a ball right now.

Mattea- That is a good idea with the push up's. Next week I may go that route with the med ball and the stacked feet. Thanks for the info on the run. I am going to do that on Thursday.

Hi Gayle...and whoever else is interested. On Runnersworld.com site
on their home page they have a drop down section that says tools and calulators. One of them is a race predictor. When I plugged in your time for your latest HM for a prediction of your marathon time it gave me a time under 4 hrs so if you are shooting for 4:20 I'd say this is definitely doable, especially with your grit and determination!!!

I'm back from the doctor and a good report, so far. The blood tests need to come back yet, but otherwise good!!! I do have a bacterial infection that she said could be zapping my energy without my even knowing it because there weren't any major signs. So, I'm pretty excited about that.

I have 3 miles to do in a little bit here after work, and I can't wait. It is about 81 degrees, though, a little hotter than I had expected, but I'm up for the challenge.

Say - I should know this, but I'm going to ask anyway......

Carbs before a long run and protein after? Right?

Thanks,
Marcia.

Sarah!!! Awesome pics!!! Karen is right as you look so darn happy.....not even tired and worn out!...Thank you so much for sharing and have a great hill repeat workout tonight!

Great story Elaine..heroin junkie...yeah right! Have a great workout.

Shelly...the massage was heaven...enjoy your interval run...:)

Wendy...that would be a great idea running as your DH & Ds ride along. Karen seems to do that well!

Christine...that version of Pinkys for Lowmax does scare me...http://smilies.sofrayt.com/eng/scared5.gif[/img] way to go!

Good workout Mattea...no, I quit freestyling as I was increasing my running mileage and it was too tough to do a leg workout 6 days a week. I am doing 2 standing (regular weight or sometimes heavy) and 1 floor workout a week now and that seems to be the right way for me.

Gayle...30 min off your second marathon could be tough, but hey, you are tough!! I found this site awhile back for running times when you are trying for a certain pace http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,,s6-51-58-0-1000,00.html put in the time you are trying for the marathon and see what the other times for your shorter runs should be.

Tomasina...so glad you posted today. I have missed you...:)...so you have an artist in the family!! You will just love Mr Yummypants...:)

The massage was incredible. I will say for all of you runnes there is not much better for your body than a nice DEEP muscle massage every 4-6 weeks. I think she got all my kinks out...and then she told me the massage was on her!!!! http://smilies.sofrayt.com/eng/jumping11.gif[/img] What a very sweet lady...:)...I ditched PLB as I wanted something more fun so I did MM lower body and added a few of my own...

I can see already that I am making a habit of checking in late. Today was a 3 mile run even though I would have loved to sleep instead. I only got 3 hours of sleep last night because DD was up screaming and crying in pain from 11:30 until 3:30 when her body was just too exhausted to stay awake anymore.

Wendy - Just a word of warning, as soon as you get a feel for road running it will be hard to go back to running on the treadmill on a continous basis, at least that is my case. (I have my magic ball out.) I forsee a baby jogger in your future. LOL My baby jogger has been the best investment. DH bought me a single seater right after DS was born and I put a lot of miles on it. Now I have a double seater and love it. It makes for a great upper body workout too! DH's work schedule is so unpredictable and I can't always fit in my running during my work lunch hour so I at least have the option of not being confined to staying in the house when I would rather be enjoying the outdoors. My almost 4 year old DS loves running with me and even tells me first thing on Saturday and Sunday mornings that he wants to go running with me. Don't worry I'm not trying to enable you or anything. ;-) }( ;-)

I hope everyone has a great day!

OK, I did the PUB

and I bought some 15 lb weights since I didn't have any. Wow- what a difference in the biceps w/ the 15 lb weights!! I loved it though! It was funny, my 5yo was playing w/ her My Little Pony's while I was working out & watching me. She said, Mommy, you have *big* muscles! She worked out for a few min using my 5 lb weights. Then at the stability ball ab work at the end she was using her playground ball to do them with me & said, Whew! That's hard work!! :) And then I had to feel her muscles. Too funny!

Yeah- my Mom is coming tonight for my dd's Pre-K graduation & will be spending the night. Why am I so excited?? Because I can go for a run & not worry about what time I have to be back before my dh leaves for work!!!!!! I love my Mom to pieces anyway, but little things like that are just a bonus! :p

Ok, have a great night, ladies!!

Sarah - Great pics!

Carole - Your massage sounds like heaven! Glad you enjoyed it! Have you noticed it it helps with your running?

Oh, your poor dd! Is she teething? I remember those nights! ITA w/ the word of warning. I have one of those Instep jogger/ bike trailers that we got w/ my 1st dd. It's old & heavy, but man it's a good workout to push!! My 2yo just LOVES going running w/ Mommy & Mikey (our dog). I get her blankie & pillow & a lot of times she'll just take a nap or she sings me songs, I pack her a snack & some books, etc. It's great & it's a great way for me to get my run in still! And ITA w/ the great upper body workout you get from it too!! I think even if my treadmill were fixed I wouldn't use it nearly as often & I was a treadmill walker then runner for about 7 yrs!! Once I hit the great outdoors the TM wasn't as appealing to me!

Thank you Karen....http://smilies.sofrayt.com/fsc/smile1.gif[/img]...I have gone to her for a few years as she is the best I have tried. I think all of you deserve a massage...:)

Kristi...all I can say is that tomorrow my run will feel wonderful because of the massage...I do think it helps alot for runners..I am so sorry about your DD....:(...I hope she feels better soon and you can get some more sleep...:)

RE: OK, I did the PUB

Hi Jess! My 1st ever marathon was a few weeks ago...May 7th to be exact, and I am still on my cloud!!:7 My official chip time was 3:48:40. I am super happy with that time since it was a 1st marathon and a really tough course (Cincinnati has it's fair share of hills and the course has never been described as fast or flat:p )

I am signed up to run Columbus in October because it is the next closest big town. That one is fast and flat. I am hoping with a less hilly course and 4.5 months to train smart, that I will shave 8 minutes off my time for a BQ!! Fingers crossed!

RE: OK, I did the PUB

Sarah...with 4.5 months to train I have no doubt you will qualify for Boston and shave off those 8 min!!
