Rhythmic Step

Just wanted to post right after doing Rhythmic Step for the first time. Did anyone else out there feel as uncoordinated and myself??? I think she snuck this one in there to keep us on our toes!!! Wow, thanks Cathe!!

You're not alone at all. I still kept screwing up in those mambo and cha-chas. I kept going in the wrong direction all the time! Then, when she did the rhythmic challenge, forget it! I didn't do well at all! I screwed up more times than I can count. LOL! But, I certainly had a big smile on my face while doing this tape. I look forward in doing it again.

I have done the tape twice, and already it's getting easier. When I previewed it, I was folding clothes and sort of doing the steps and foot motions trying to get an idea of what they might feel like. The first time I did it, the rhythmic step challenge was way beyond me--I had just plain forgotten the first two parts and fumbled around. I was also pretty tired by this time, making it even harder to be in the right place at the right time. But I also remember how Step Works threw me for awhile, and now it's a piece of cake. I know I'm going to love mastering this one because I already love the feel of some of the steps when I do them right--especially the squat, swing, squat, cha cha back and forth across the step, and the little heel thing, and the kicks--lots of great stuff! Hang in there!!

I must be the newly crowned "Klutz of the Year."

I previewed the tape twice, and then did it twice. I mean, stumbled through it twice. I still am having trouble getting some of the moves and usually wind up on the wrong foot, facing the opposite way. I even put my step down to 4 inches so I could concentrate on the footwork more. Did not happen.

I am jealous that someone could do it twice and have it down pat.

I love the moves, I love the music. I am determined to get the hang of this routine no matter how long it takes. I have been bench stepping for over ten years (although not with Cathe who I have just recently discovered) and many of my tapes are considered to be in the advanced choreography category. I have never had so much difficulty learning the steps.

I will perservere and one of these days I will be able to do the whole thing. May not be soon, but I will get there.

Just call me Queen Klutz.

Oh, dear, Marlene, I did not mean to suggest that I have this thing down after only two times. It's going to take me quite awhile to get it all to go smoothly. I just meant that some of the steps I found fun to do after several tries and I could see how it was all going to fit together. I cannot even remember how long I have been stepping. I go all the way back to a tape put out by the Indiana Pacers cheerleaders, and my first step was built by my husband using CollageVideo directions. 10 inches high and made of wood. I think I have been stepping for 14-15 years, and was an early Cathe fan--have tapes that are no longer being sold. Don't feel like a klutz on my account. I still can't do the second section of Christi Taylor's Step Heaven and I don't even want to buy the CIA tapes after trying one that was impossible--for me.

It took me forever to do this tape. I really worked that rewind button. I am Catholic, I thought rhythm was inate ( guess not).

However the S&H tapes have made me more devoted. Everytime Cathe says "last one" I keep saying "Thank you God".

Thank you! It's such a relief to hear so many other people saying they felt really challenged by Rhythmic Step. I logged on purposely today to find out if anyone else felt as overwhelmed as I did. I keep reminding myself that if it were easy I wouldn't like it and the fact that it's challenging is precisely why I know I won't get bored of it. I feel like I got maybe 75% of it - the rest of the time I was stumbling or marching in place! I still sweated like a pig, though, so I know I got something out of it.

I absolutely love this video. I just did it for the first time today and I have to say it may be the best Cathe has ever done. I did have a few stumbles and ended up on the wrong foot a few times...huh, a few times? Anyway, this is definitely a winner. I even like the music and think it is pretty motivating. I was sweating big time at the end also. It will take some practice but that's one thing that makes it so fun. I love to work on a routine and FINALLY say, AH HA...GOT IT!!!

We must be kindred spirits after all.

I too have that Indiana Pacemates bench tape. I guess it was state of the art at the time but Cathe users would be appalled if they saw it. Too many basic steps, not much else. Oh, and don't forget the cheerleaders who manage to step for an hour in perfect hair and makeup and not even crack a sweat. The leader is particularly annoying if you remember.

I too felt uncoordinated, but that was to be expected of course. I really dont care for mambos, cha-cha's, triples around the board or pivot turns so I went thru the tape last night and practiced modifications for each move. I came up with modifications that worked countwise for all those sections except the mambo/cha-cha combo taught in section 2, I'm still struggling with that one so if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (and two left feet)!

Stacy

I feel the same way about those very moves! Although the shuffling is what I really want to avoid. It is tough to do on carpet.I would love to hear how you modified those moves, because I spent part of yesterday doing the same thing! I want so much to love doing this tape, but it felt confining going through as is. Are you looking for a modification for the mambo cha-cha with the lunges? If you are, I think if you continue to go up and lunge 3 times and step off changing directions, you will eventually end up facing front on the inside of the bench the same time she starts the next move. I'd have to go and do it to be sure. I've only done it 3 times so I'm not familiar enough with the moves to be positive. Thanks in advance sharing any of your ideas. Janet

I'm struggling with this one, too, but I expected to. My two left feet take a lot of practice on an easy tape, let alone a challenging one.
Nevertheless, I LOVE this workout! I like the moves, & I want to learn them all. I love the music. I even like the pace...so I WILL LEARN IT! If it's the last thing I do! ;-)

Oh! I'm so glad I'm not alone!
I've decided to only work on the warm up and 1st segment until those are flowing then move on to the rest!
I have very little room to work so the turning and around the board don't work for me either.....at least that's what I tell myself! ;)
I'm so uncoordinated just going forward, I can't imagine trying to spin in the middle. Heaven knows where I might end up! :)

Thanks for all your comments - It is good to know that I am not the only one feeling klutzy!!!
I will get this down pat! Just like step works - I think I can, I think I can!!!

I wondered if anyone else had this tape. Yeah--really irritating cheerleader coach, and how about those little skirts? Do you have any other early BORING ones? I had one that was done completely with handweights and infinitely repetitive with a perky dark-haired leader. I don't think she ever came out with another tape. In those early ones there were no dynamic moves at all--just step, step, and more step and some arm moves I guess for variety. I have donated most of those early ones to the local library.

Lynda:

Yes, I have plenty of old boring tapes collecting dust. They are especially boring when you compare them to Cathe.

How about the early Charlene Prickett "Step Right Up?" Anyone remember that one? They used a ten inch step and hand weights. Up up down down up up down down. The most complicated move was changing from right to left foot every 25 minutes or so. Yeck.

I suppose when the step bench was new, these types of tapes were considered choreographed but we have come a long way, baby.

FrostyJan....

Thanks for the modification idea for the mambo cha-cha with the lunges, the timing and direction was perfect. I just did Rhythmic Step for the first time all the way thru and I did suprisingly ok. Here's what I did for the shuffle, cha-cha etc combo's that seemed to work....

1. Mambo/cha-cha/pivot turn move in section one.....I did 3 knees ups, tap downs and the fourth knee up was the jump swing like Cathe does on the tape.

2. Triples around the board.....4 jumping jacks or 2 plyo jacks whichever you're up for.

3. Back shuffle....after the over face move I just go across the board instead of the 2 shuffles back. I still do the two sets of shuffles across the board that follow.

4. The other modification I do is the one you suggested.

I really didnt feel the need to modify anything else. I, like you, was kinda bummed when I first previewed the tape and saw too many mambo's and cha-cha's for my liking, but with these modifications, I'm going to love this tape!! Let me know if you try any of them or if you have any more modification suggestions.

:) Stacy

folding laundry

Lynda,

Your post cracked me up. I, too, was folding laundry while pre-viewing "Rhythmic Step." I even put down a bath towel to act as a step. hee hee.

RE: old step tapes, ancient steppers

Yeah, Marlene,

I had that one, too. My husband really doesn't like Charlene Prickett's chatter, so I did not use it very much. He is usually eating breakfast when I am working out and every now and then he will come in and make a critical comment or praise something. He thinks Cathe sounds like she "means business." He also likes Cedie the best in these new tapes because he approves of her more rounded feminine form. There's a closeup on Cathe's knee in one video (I think it's BodyMax) that he has zeroed in on several times where you can see arthroscopic surgery scars and he always says something sympathetic because he has had both of his knees "done"--medial meniscus torn and fixed.

Hi Stacey,
Thanks for letting me know what you did to modify. I love your suggestions and am anxious to try them out. I'll let you know if I come up with anything else to try as well. Have a great day!
Janet:)
