Rekindle the "Kindle" Question

kindle

I am madly in love with my Kindle! I have the original and just love to read books and newpapers on it. The screen is like reading on paper, not a computer and it's so portable. I also love the option of sampling a book before you purchase it.

I LOVE mine!! It makes me want to read even more. I was a skeptic because I love to feel the pages of a book...but, to be honest, I haven't missed that feeling at all and my nightstand is so neat and clean now!!

I do wish I had the Kindle 2 because the buttons on the first version are easy to hit and to "turn the page" without you wanting to do so.

It is worth every penny!!!!

Nancy - tell more! Are you as excited as I am? Today I got through all of the user manual...I can't believe all the features. I've already downloaded a couple of reference books for work and know this will be an incredibly wonderful productivity tool. I have a business trip next week so I'll get to try it out!

I downloaded several other books from Amazon that were all free! Yippee!

Jo :D

Jo, I couldn't be more excited! NEW TOY!! I love gadgets. Anyway, all I've done so far is charge the thing, so I have few comments:

1. I think I was expecting the screen to be just a bit bigger. I never owned a K1 so I don't have anything to compare it to. The size of the K is what I expected, but the screen takes up no more than 2/3 of the face of the device, if that. I thought the size of the screen would approximate the size of a small paperback book.

2. As many others have said before me, it's INSANE that it doesn't come with some sort of basic cover. I can't even imagine using it without a cover. It will not be leaving my house until my Patagonia cover arrives.

3. It is a great-looking device and I CAN'T WAIT for the weekend to have time to play around with it and explore all of its features. :D:D:D

Kindle 2 question

I need some advice from you Kindle 2 owners. I've thought about buying one for a while. Can you adjust the size of the print on the screen? I have over-40 eyes and am having a harder and harder time reading some of my books, even with glasses. (I know, I need to get them checked again. But still, it would be great to be able to read without having to dig glasses out.)

When you download a book, is it yours for all eternity, or does it expire after a period of time? I think I remember reading that it wasn't the same as buying and owning a book.

Are you happy with the length of time that the battery lasts? And do you like the brightness of the screen?

Maybe this is something that I can hint about as a Mother's Day gift, so I'll get something that I love.

Thanks, all!

Kathryn, I haven't even used mine yet, but I can tell you that you can definitely adjust the size of the print. That is a very attractive feature for many. And my understanding is that the book is yours forever on your Amazon account, whether or not you keep it on your Kindle. I think it's like the itunes library. Your purchases are always there, regardless of what songs you are carrying around on your ipod. Those in the know will have more to say about this.

My primary reason for buying the K2 is that I live in an apartment, and I just don't have room to store hundreds of books. Probably even more important, I don't want to! I despise clutter, and I despise paper clutter most of all. Obviously, there are some books that I keep, like reference books, etc. But when I'm finished reading a novel, I never go back to it again. And I just don't need it hanging around my living space. Also, I commute on the subway, and the K2 is light to carry around. Oh, and if you travel, even if it's just once or twice per year, you can carry all your reading material on one little featherweight device. So, you see, you NEED ONE and so does Michele. (evil enabling grin).

ETA: The biggest drawback to buying a K2 is the initial layout. It costs $359 and doesn't come with a case, so you have to add on at least another $30 or $40 for a case. However, there are no subscription fees or hidden costs. You just pay per book or periodical, and so far the prices have been good for those. Of course, Amazon does have the right to change its prices if it wants to, but many K2 owners are saying they will boycott any book over $9.99, including new release hardcovers.

Sorry for the novel.

Mama Deb and Miss Lee SOOOO need one. :p;)

Well, I DO have a birthday coming up :D!!! But seriously, as much as I love the feel of a book in my hands, sometimes I just don't want to carry one, especially when I travel. And I'm anxious to see what, if any, magazines you can get because I'd rather get those electronically than have magazines piling up around the house -- and they're SO wasteful!

I am just green w/envy! I really want one of these, mostly for the gym when I read during cardio. Some longer books won't fit on my darn book rack. But also for those rainy Sundays on the sofa. Esp. for hard bound books, they're tough to read in an ummm reclining position. ;)

Is the first Kindle still available? I think I'd settle for that, if the costs was less.

Sorry for the novel.

No problem with the novel; I love to read! ;)

Nancy, you've given me lots of reasons to get one! I, too, despise clutter. I read "on the go" a lot, and I'm always hauling books around with me. (With a Kindle, I could have a lot of books in one device!)

Did I mention I hate clutter? That is such a selling point right there! There are so many books that I buy, read, and don't really love enough to enshrine on my bookshelf (but I do anyway).

Yeah, it's pricey, but if I mention it before the next gift-holiday, maybe DH will buy me something that I love, rather than something that leaves me going, "Huh?"

LauraMax, I'm jealous that you have time to lounge and read. It's the thing I miss most in my life! (That, and the ability to see without scrambling for glasses. Oh yeah, and the ability to remember things. And I also miss smooth skin. My waistline? That's a gonner, too!)

Okay, it's a longer list than I'd realized. But reading is right at the top!

Don't be jealous Kathryn. I work 50-60 hours a week, exercise 10-12 hours a week. If I didn't take Sunday afternoons off I think I'd go insane.

Okay, you can KEEP that work and exercise schedule! When do you find time to sleep? Or eat?

But seriously, I'm glad to hear that you still have a job. You'd mentioned that you were worried a few weeks ago.

On the Kindle 2....they have have corrected the problem with the accidental page turning that occurs on the original Kindle. They have also improved the graphics. As for limited books....I totally disagree. Besides the books on Amazon ...there are also thousands of free books available from an incredible amount of sources. You just have to do a little homework:

Heck, you never even have to buy an amazon book if you don't want to.

Where do I find books outside Amazon?

I have no interest in Kindle 2 right now. As I said, my original Kindle was a waste of money for me, but that is just my opinion. I find the reviews on the Kindle varied.

I am glad they fixed the page turn option.

But if I want a new Kindle, I need to sell or do something with my Original Kindle.

Please again, can you give me insight into where else I can find things to download to my Kindle?

Thanks in advance!

OK, now I feel like a dumba$$. You gave the link. Thanks so much!

Yes, the text can be adjusted to quite large. Yes, Kindle books are kept in an online library, so if you buy a new Kindle, etc., you do not have to repurchase.

As for battery time, it is pretty good.

LOL! I manage, but I must admit by Friday night I have trouble keeping my eyes open, & my social life is rather pitiful.

Thanks so much for remembering! The layoff list came out Monday. I'm not on it, thank goodness! So I'm safe for now anyway. Such a huge relief! :):):)

Sorry for the thread drift guys. :p

Amazon say the battery charge can last for up to 4 days of reading if you leave the wireless on and 2 weeks if you leave it turned off.

The text print is easily adjusted by just pressing the "Aa" symbol and you can choose from 6 different print sizes (you use the joystick)....being from the bifocal crowd, I vary the print size all the time.

You can even have the device read to you.....male or female (take your pick). It doesn't read with inflection, but it does read (in my opinion, the male voice is reminiscent of Stephen Hawking's synthesized voice). You can also vary the speed of reading and the Kindle 2 will turn the pages on it's own.

OK, now I am almost hooked. I wonder if I can get a decent asking price if I sell my original Kindle at Ebay?

Clearly, I don't need two Kindles.
