Rekindle the "Kindle" Question

OK, now I am almost hooked. I wonder if I can get a decent asking price if I sell my original Kindle at Ebay?

Clearly, I don't need two Kindles.

I've used the original Kindle....I'm not sure it would be worth it for you to upgrade. Your decision, of course. Heck, probably in another year or two the new one will have a touch screen and maybe a voice that reads with inflection based on the punctuation. Now, that would be a real upgrade! Hmm...I just might have to buy one of them. ;)

I'm hoping in another year or two they'll just send the man of my choice to read the book to me. :D

I need some advice from you Kindle 2 owners. I've thought about buying one for a while. Can you adjust the size of the print on the screen? I have over-40 eyes and am having a harder and harder time reading some of my books, even with glasses. (I know, I need to get them checked again. But still, it would be great to be able to read without having to dig glasses out.)

When you download a book, is it yours for all eternity, or does it expire after a period of time? I think I remember reading that it wasn't the same as buying and owning a book.

Are you happy with the length of time that the battery lasts? And do you like the brightness of the screen?

Maybe this is something that I can hint about as a Mother's Day gift, so I'll get something that I love.

Thanks, all!

Kathryn - yes when you buy a book it's yours forever. I've already played with deleting books off my device and downloading again to the device. You have a "manage my kindle" section on your account at Amazon and all the books are there with your purchase details and option to download to your Kindle or your computer. Also, if you have made a purchase but it's not downloaded to your device, it's listed under your "Archived Items" on your device and then you can download it when you're ready. So you always know what you have purchased, what's downloaded, etc.

I have to say, this is right up there as one of the best purchases I've ever made (uh...that's outside my fitness category! :D). I left town this morning for the weekend and will be traveling next week so will get to really play with all the features and thoroughly test it out! I've very impressed with all the features. Oh, and it has a dictionary that ships with it as well. I like this since I keep a dictionary on my nightstand.

Last thing, you can upload mp3 files so if you like to listen to music while you read you can do that as well. You can upload a limited number of other file types as well.

Off to read....Jo :D:D

Jo, I couldn't be more excited! NEW TOY!! I love gadgets. Anyway, all I've done so far is charge the thing, so I have few comments:

1. I think I was expecting the screen to be just a bit bigger. I never owned a K1 so I don't have anything to compare it to. The size of the K is what I expected, but the screen takes up no more than 2/3 of the face of the device, if that. I thought the size of the screen would approximate the size of a small paperback book.

2. As many others have said before me, it's INSANE that it doesn't come with some sort of basic cover. I can't even imagine using it without a cover. It will not be leaving my house until my Patagonia cover arrives.

3. It is a great-looking device and I CAN'T WAIT for the weekend to have time to play around with it and explore all of its features. :D:D:D

Nancy, that's funny, the screen was bigger than I expected so I was pleasantly surprised! I agree with you about having to buy a cover but I'm very happy (so far) with the Amazon one I purchased.

I am anxious to hear your update after playing with it some. So far, I can not part with mine and am taking it everywhere! I carry a large handbag and it fits in very nicely as well as snug as a bug in my laptop case (and of course nicely on my nightstand)!

Jo :D

Huh??

I just went to buy the Kindle version of the next in a chronological series of Ian Rankin (Inspector Rebus) books, and THERE WAS NO KINDLE VERSION ON AMAZON! I really thought that all of the Ian Rankin (a popular mystery writer) novels would be available on the Kindle. Amazon carries the paperback. So, if I stick with reading them in the order they were written, my next book is going to be paper! :( Shoot.

I wasn't sure if all Amazon books would be available on Kindle, but I figured at least they would have a full series of a popular line. Anyone know what's up with this?

I believe they have to have agreement with the Publisher. On a couple of books I found that were not in Kindle format, when you pull up the details there is a comment on the left of the page that says something like: let the publisher know you want this for Kindlle (or something like that). You click on that and it sends a message somewhere. I assumed it's like petitioning.

Well that's disappointing Nancy. So far almost everything I have wanted are available in Kindle format. I was especially surprised when I discovered some of my business books available in Kindle format. Maybe you'll have to read something else in between??
