I just a minor surgery on my thigh and it is going to leave a good size scar. What works to help reduce the appearance? I know you can buy mederma but it is very expensive. any other ways, i thought vitamin e oil was one way to reduce scars?

hey there! well I was going to say vitamin e oil until I read the last part of your message. I really don't know or havn't heard of anything else that would work besides what you have mentioned. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Someone might know something out there!

Ask your doc to prescribe some silicone scar pads. You can also buy a cheaper version at the drug store with a silicone pad and some cream in a kit. The drug store version is not as nice as the prescribed ones.

And according to my dermatologist, you can only help it while it's healing -- once it's healed into an actual scar, that stuff they try to sell you does not reduce it, so she says....

good luck! And, remember that scars become a part of the story that is you, so they are not all bad.....

My daughter have a cut in her right corner of eye. Her plastic surgeon told us don't need anything fancy, just use Eucerin - the original formula one. Apply it as often as you can. It will make it look like your surrounding skin. But it will take about 1 year.

My friend used Mederma after surgery on his arm and it healed beautifully, but it is expensive. I agree that it must be used during the healing process. I used Mederma after a 6 month bout with hives and it did nothing because the scars had already set in. Nothing I have used got rid of the many scars on my arms and legs. Another important thing is not to expose the healing area to the sun, doing so will increase your chance of a permanent scar.

so can i use mederma while i am using the anti-biotic cream? it won't infect the wound will it??

I had found silicone scar sheets in walgreens and I used them on a burn scar on my arm after it was healed and you can't even see the scar any more. I cant remember the name of them though.
