Question About Night Splints For Plantar Fasciitis

Shelbygirl

Cathlete
For those of you who use a night splint to help with your plantar fasciitis, do you use the big clunky kind or little bootie version (where there's a strap connecting the toe to the ankle)? The bootie version looks way more comfortable, but I'm not sure how effective it is. I'm looking to order one asap, so any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shelbygirl

Shelbygirl,

I got the big clunky kind, and I despise it! It feels too tight across my foot, and I end up kicking it off in the middle of the night. So, currently, I haven't been wearing one. I'd like to hear opinions about other night splints, though, because if the bootie version is better, I'd consider ordering it as well.

My foot dr. charged me $150 for that useless splint, too! Thank goodness insurance picked up most of it, but what a rip off!

Good luck in your quest of pain-free feet :)

Shelbygirl,

I too am suffering from plantar fascitis. I am in so much pain sometimes I can hardly walk. A friend gave me a clunker of a leg boot to wear at night. I admit it does help and I am pain free throughout the night. unfortunately the pain shoots back as soon as I walk on it. Do you recommend any exercises or therapy for this. i haven';t see a doctor yet. My insurance won;t cover it.

Hi Shelby...

I used the splint-sock. It worked out just fine w/o all the bulk. My dh had to big splint and we both had the expected outcome. I'd have to say that mine was much more comfortable and tolerable though. Let us know what you decide...

Carol - Are you also taking anti-inflamatories. You should wear the splint and take those. Make sure you stretch and use ice after working out. That should help.

Thanks for your resonses, ladies.

Fitxme - Is your sock the kind that goes all the way up to your knee, or the kind that goes only up to your ankle?

Carol - What helps me the most with respect to pain relief is keeping my calf muscles stretched out all the time. I even try to stretch them out before I get out of bed. I also have to put inserts into all my shoes for extra arch support. And, I've given up (temporarily I hope!) all cardio with impact. Cardio Coach using the bike or elliptical has been saving my sorry butt these days, that's for sure! What I haven't been doing, but should, is ice my foot after I work out.

Heidi - I'll probably end up ordering the sock or little boot thing, rather than the big clunky version. I'll let you know if it helps.

The night splint thing drives me up the wall. I've never been able to get comfy with it on. I found that if I put a pillow or 2 at the foot of the bed it helps to keep my foot in the flexed position. I guess too, that it depends on the severity of your PF. I can pretty much keep mine in check by stretching my calf muscle and pointing/flexing my foot very thoroughly before getting out of bed. Good luck to you. I know PF is a bear!

My pt made my night splint and it is VERY basic. she just took a piece of thin plastic, heated it up and formed it around my foot and up to my calf, attached a couple of velcro straps, and voila! It is light weight and it took a few nights to get used to it, but I do credit it with helping my healing. BTW, my mom also had PF and had to wear a pretty big splint all day long for a while.
