Pure White Noise (my recommendation)

Hello everyone :)

After reading in the thread Your Ideal Day, I saw a lot of posts on how much people love listening to thunder shower's at night. I then remembered a website that I love, and wanted to share it with all of you:

White Noise Compact Disks [CDs], Online White Noise MP3 Downloads, Whitenoise Sounds, White Noise Compact Disks Online | White Noise iPhone/iPod App

I have been downloading these wonderful static noise MP3's since my daughter was born about 3 years ago. It's no surprise babies sleep better and find comfort in listening to static noise (especially during the first 3 months -- helpful tip to all the new mommies to be :) ). During the first year of my daughter's life, I experimented with several static noises, including Ocean Waves (a personal fav), Thunder Shower's, Babbling Brook, Fan, just to name a few. Not only were they helpful in aiding my daughter into a blissful night's sleep, but I also fell in love and found them to be extremely effective for occasional insomnia and drowning out annoying sounds at night (wonderful if you live on a busy street or intersection). The trick is to find the sounds that appeals to you (the Ticking Clock just bothered the heck out of me!!).

Two thumbs-up for a restful nights sleep :)

I have an app on my phone called Sleep Pillow with the most relaxing white noise selections on it. When I plug my phone in at night, I turn the app on and it plays while I go to sleep. It has a timer, so it will turn off when you want it to. I have really bad tinnitis, and so I have to have something in the background in order to go to sleep.

I've been using a white noise machine for more than a decade (purchased at Brookstone, although the iPod and phone apps are even better) to drown out ambient noise because I am a light sleeper. I asked an audiologist if there is any harm in using noise machines so often and for so many hours, and she said that as long as the sound level is not too high, there is no harm. That was reassuring. I bring my machine (which has a power source and can take batteries) when I travel and it's been a godsend in noisy hotels.

I tried this last night but hubby drowned it out with his loud snoring. I guess ill try with head phone ..

My husband and I sleep in different rooms because he is like sleeping with a dump truck in both sound and motion. :) We have been married almost 17 years, and it works for us!

I meant to comment that I agree with Natalie that pure white noise is best. My machine has settings with birds, frogs (funny, but not good for sleeping), water dripping (this can drive you to distraction), and rain (this can make you repeatedly get up to use the bathroom at night) among others. A steady hum is best. Anything irregular will keep you awake not knowing when the sound will repeat.

Totally agree! I like a fan sound. I tried it again last night and I didn't hear hubby at all this time.. simply because it put me to sleep before he started up to loud. I feel good today. I usually wake up groucy lol sore and headachy ...maybe getting a good night sleep is all I needed.

As a night shift worker, all I can say is I totally love my fan! Sleeping during the day is hard enough as it is with the sun shining in, but when you add neighbors mowing or kids watching tv in the other room - well you gotta do whatcha gotta do! I think I will check into that app tho :)

My DH doesn't snore but yes, a dump truck in motion is a good way to describe him. He elbows me, rolls over on top of me, lays his leg across me and likes to sleep and stretch out in the middle of the bed. I've suggested maybe we sleep in different rooms since I know a lot of happily married couples do but he says he would just follow me and sleep where I do. I think the only solution for us would be to get a king size bed

We have a king sized bed, and it makes no difference! Maybe you could do two double beds in the same room, if he likes your company so much. :)

That describes ME to a T. I'm a horrible person to share a bed with. I'm the one who keeps suggesting we either get separate beds or separate bedrooms, but he doesn't want to. I actually end up getting up quite often, because I'm so restless and keep waking him up. I feel guilty. Almost as guilty as when I elbow him in the face .

We use a white noise machine, too. It's been great for both of us, since we are both light sleepers. I HATE ocean noises or thunderstorm noises; they are very jarring to me, even though the natural ocean and natural thunderstorms are awesome.

My parents bought a King Size Tempurpedic a couple of years ago, and they said they no longer "see" each other during the night.

My mom is like me, and has tortured my dad endlessly through the years. Now she says the bed is so huge and keeps her so firmly in place she hasn't been anywhere near him. That can be a good thing or bad thing...

LOL, I get what your mom is talking about Fidget :D We get a king bed when we travel and he does feel so far away. It gives him his room to stretch out & since I stay where I am it seems to work. Next investment is a new TV so a new bed will have to wait a while :(

I can't sleep without some sort of white noise. I sleep best during the summer with the air conditioner on. Will take a look at the link today!
