Pure Strength or Slow and Heavy

I need help. Not sure which DVD to purchase.

I workout everyday and like to incorporate cardio and weight lifting. I usuallly run for my cardio but I would like a new weight training workout. Currently I have Power Hour, MIS and Body Max. I would like a workout that spends more time on each body part. I am used to working out in a gym where I usually did 1-2 body-parts per day. But after my son was born, I can't get to the gym:-(

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I am not much in to weights but have really enjoyed Slow & Heavey. I have the Pure Strength as well, but have not returned to those in a while. S & H is great because you really do focus on one body part for an extended time. I have found this easier than some of the endurance workouts.

PS: shorter than SH, thus more flexible. I can fit all upper body into one day and then legs on another. Good workout - I can feel it the next day. It's similar in structure and format to MIS or the upper body portion of Body Max.

SH: I think my muscles react better - meaning get stronger - with this one. I do feel sore the next day with this one, but I actually like PS Legs better than the leg segment in the SH series - I feel it is harder. SH is a difficult series IMHO as it requires a lot of concentration. Plus, the tapes are all 1 hour, except legs which is 1:10, so a little less flexible.

So, both sets are really good, it depends on what you're going for.

i hope that helped...

Hey ladies,

Thanks for your comments. I actually was considering posting the same question. I want to incorporate some intense strength training and I was wondering what would be best to invest in, SH or PS? Thanks for your help!

Dawn, I have not tried Slow and Heavy yet, but I have been using Pure Strength for about 3 months. I am finding the best results from doing both PS/ BBA and CST together on one day and then doing SLA on the next day. I then do a full body workout like MIS two days later. I do cardio in between like Cardio Kicks or treadmill or run outside. I have been doing video weight workouts (the Firm) for 17 years and have had some great results, but these workouts from Cathe have taken me even further in my fitness goals. You won't be disappointed with the PS Series. Good Luck!

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but S&H wasn't for me. I just found it to be boring because you go *really* slowly when lifting the weight (I know that's the point:)) I found some of the moves tough to do or had to really modify.

I like faster paced workouts where you go from move to move...like PowerHour and Muscle Endurance. I have the PS tapes, and although I don't use them all that much, I like them. They give you a good workout and are easy to use if you have the 3 days to do them.

I think it depends on what type of workout you think you'll enjoy.

S&H wasn't for me either. I do like the minute breaks in between sets which is what I do when I am at the gym, but the slow pace made the tapes just go on forever... I love the PS series though. I feel like I get a really good workout with them.

Thank you ladies for your insight! I appreciate your comments and I will consider them for my next video purchase. I really want to gain some muscle, but it is still hard to know which one to choose! :0) Dawn

I think a good step up from PH, MIS is PS. After you've been on a rotation with that workout for a while, you could step up to S&H. I usually work through a cycle of weight workouts, starting with PH, then going to MIS, then PS, then S&H (though I'm on an Intensity binge right now, and have to refigure my rotations to incorporate PLB/PUB).

For me personally, I find that I both enjoy and respond better to the Pure Strength Series. The workouts incorporate more exercises, but are still slow and controlled enough to allow for heavier lifting. Added to which, I just don't have the mental focus to keep up with the S&H series. They're both great series, but if you're only going for one, I'd recommend the PS Series. It's more versatile and can be used for longer rotation periods.

HTH,

It took me ages to get the PS series because it was kind of old. I have S&H and stayed on that rotation for 4 months! Cathe recommends only 3 weeks or as a plateau buster ... but it was a good series and I enjoyed it. I didn't have any of her strength workouts before and was tired of circuits. S&H focused on slow reps and good form and it was new. My legs were pretty skinny and the Leg workout was exactly what I needed to build them up. It gave me really good results and it only took half an hour. I always argue that 45-50 minutes of fast squats and lunges can't be good for your joints . Besides, how bad can your legs possibly be to suffer that much??? I loved S&H Legs!!!
That being said, S&H does require a lot of concentration and after awhile you'll need another split series.
Marlene suggested PS. She was sooo right. Dated as it is...it is a very good one. My arms thank this series...6 months into it and I am still seeing results. My shoulders are beginning to shape up nicely. Fat arms are a family curse and my sister said I was spared! I was not!!! It's all Cathe !!! I think it's PS actually and just wait until that Pyramid series falls into my hands!
