Pure Strength or Gym Styles?

I know that GS is an updated version of Pure Strength, but which one is more enjoyable? Which series has better music? Are the exercises pretty similar? I want to build muscle and get definition.

If you've used any of these series, could you please post your results?

Lastly, can I just get CTX Upper Body instead of any of these series for an upper body split? (How do you order this anyway? I coudln't find the option to purchase it on cathe.com).

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi!

I would probably go with the Gym Style series since you can also add Muscle Max as an "overall add-on" to Gym Style after you have done each body part once a week.
I own both but haven't used the Pure Strength yet. I am thinking of alternating between them - and throw in Slow & Heavy, too - in my rotations for added variety and periodization since Pure Strength combines muscle groups differently than Gym Style/Slow & Heavy.
CTX Upper Body is a Premix of all upper body exercises included in the CTX Bundle, so I doubt you can get it separately (it's not even included in the DVD description page). Besides, there's no warm up or cool down in this premix, so I use the warm up from All Step and the cool down from 10-10-10. Overall, it is a great bundle to get and Leaner Legs is an amazing lower-body workout!

Hope this helps... :)

Chris.

I own both GS and PS and would also suggest GS. It is a bit more challenging and you may like the music better because it is newer. Although I don't even remember the GS music!

I don't own CTX, except for a vhs version of Leaner Legs I recieved in a trade. Are you asking if you can purchase just the upper body segments of CTX? Like the above poster, I don't think you can purchase this way.

You really can't go wrong with ANY Cathe workout!!

I don't work out in a manner so controlled as to be able to post results on PS vs GS. I agree that GS is harder than PS and this may be bc GS is a bit longer for each muscle group. GS is simply more work. However, I still tend to prefer PS. I am not crazy about all of the push ups in GS. I am also not a big fan of band work which is quite prevalent in GS. Plus, I love, love, love the shoulders in PS and not so much in GS. The last set of static lunges in GS hurts the balls of my back foot. Could say more but my little one is calling. Husband takes laptop back to work tomorrow. Sorry. The Pure Strength video is to the PS series what Muscle Max is the GS series (i.e.the total body in one workout.)

"The Pure Strength video is to the PS series what Muscle Max is the GS series (i.e.the total body in one workout.)"

I meant to say that "MAXIMUM INTENSITY STRENGTH is to the PS series..."

I have been thinking and thinking about this PS vs GS question. And in the end I have to admit that GS seems to be the correct answer (better sound quality, harder workout, clearer picture, just overall better I might say) but in the end, I just plain prefer the actual exercises of PS. Hmmm....

Darn! That doesn't make the decision easier! I might just have to get both! :)

Of course, PS is cheaper so I might just start with that and work my way up!

What do you think about a PS 3 day split using Muscle Max once a week to hit each body part twice a week?

Thanks again!

Ok... I just checked the videofitness.com website and you can get reviews and breakdowns of the exercises Cathe does in both Series. I would suggest you put down the exercises/sets/reps and then decide which to get. I would do that if I were wondering which to buy.

Also, if you go here and check out the Cathe weight workout worksheets, you can see a complete breakdown of the exercises and poundage used by Cathe. Sometimes VF reviews are very complete and sometimes not so much. The Ya Ya review forum also has a good breakdown of each workout (most of the time), but no guidance as far as weights used. Maybe it'll help you decide on which. I like both, but PS is just so simple, it's like an old friend to go back to when you don't want any fuss.

Thank you! The weight chart helped a lot. I did PS CST and I was able to gauge my weight according to what Cathe is using.

I really like the Gym styles. I like the variety of exercises in each. The time seems to fly by when I'm doing them. I also like the upper body workouts on 4DS. They have really helped me!
