The pullups are something I have yet to master. I have the gym equipment for it but I might get 3 if I am lucky. How can I improve

P90X has you use a chair to assist. Put the chair in front of your pullup bar, plane ONE foot on the chair (the other leg hangs straight down to catch you if you fall off). No use the leg on the chair to give you as little assistance as possible, but still do the pullup. I will usually max out on unassisted pullups, then add on about 10 assisted pullups to keep getting stronger.
BTW, I think 3 unassisted pullups is great! Keep building,

Another option for working up the real pullups

I've recently starting doing some pullups in the middle of swimming laps at a local pool. They are quite easy but I figure it is a good way to start as I can do 0 regular pullups! All you do is grab the bar on a starting block (the one right below the starting platform that swimmers use for their backstroke start) and starting pulling. The start blocks are over deep water so you can't push off the bottom but the water gives you quite a cheat. I think if I work up to grapping the top of the start platform it will be harder as more of my body will be out of the water.

I may have to buy one of those over the door bars to work up from there.

I recently bought a door bar but have not installed it. I was wondering if there is any concern in hitting your head b/c if you put the bar up over your head how can you avoid it? Am I making any sense?

Also, since I have never done a pull up I was wondering about installing it lower (similar in height to Cathe's new tower where she is demonstrating it almost from a horizontal position).

Any thoughts?

I have mine installed about 3 to 4 inches from the top on the inside of the doorway. That will be plenty high so you won't hit your head when you walk through. When you do a pull up you should not hit it either.

How are door pullup bars installed? I've always been worried I weigh too much to use an attached pullup bar and worry I'll pull the thing right out of the wall and go crashing to the floor. Also, I have a historic home and worry about damaging the plaster or the moulding around the door.

All great suggestions

Hi All! Just chiming in to say these are all superb suggestions. If you don't have access to any kind of pull up/chin up bar then I suggest buying a heavy resistance tension band and attaching it overhead so that you are using it to simulate a Lat Pull Down motion. Go slow and feel the tension of that band through the entire range of motion (on the way down AND up). Yup, your going to feel it !!!
