Pull Up Bars-How to use if you can't pull up?

I have an in the doorway pull up bar. What's the best way to work up to being able to do a pullup/chinup since I can't even do one? Should I just hang there and try to lift for the 30 seconds? Should I use a chair or stool and put myself in the up position and try to hold myself up? Should I try to jump into the up position and then try to hold myself?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't have a pull up bar, but I would try using a chair or even better a step up stool to give you the initial push, then try not to keep your full weight on the chair/stool.

I'm using a combination of the tubing, and these equalizer bars, the bars let me do the modified pull up similar to when they use the power tower with their feet on the floor.

i find that using a chair makes me cheat more and support to much of my body weight. Lately, i have been using a stability ball instead of a chair which gives me some support but since its unstable i can't rely on it to much.

I haven't started STS yet (and haven't even gotten my pull-up bar out of the box yet!) but I was planning to do bent-arm hangs if I couldn't do a pull-up. When I was younger and the schools had the Presidential Fitness Award, they'd have you either measure how many pull-ups you could do or do the bent-arm hang (which is just getting yourself into the pull-up position and hanging there as long as you can). I remember that I was really bad at it at first, but worked at it a little longer each day. I eventually past the test and was able to do pull-ups. So I'm hoping this would still work for me.
