That's a good point. I forgot about that (because I DON'T hold it the way Cathe does). My hands are too small to safely hold more than 15" by the ends. I prefer the "overlap" position.
 
This is reminiscent of the "one-body part a week" misunderstanding. ;) I, too, was picturing a shoulder workout.

Hi Nancy,
You should check with a doctor to make ceratin you don't have an undiagnosed shoulder girdle compression such as that caused by a cervical rib for example. One of the first manifestations can be rapid muscle failure when the arms are doing work overhead and pressed overhead and back such as the position you are in when doing French presses. I don't know why else your muscles would fail so quickly for this exercise.
