PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION: Month 1

Susan, congrats on the 2 pounds something is better than nothing.

I beleive your question would be best answered by our expert Ms. Fnv. :D

Deanna - Fantastic job on the weight loss !!! :D

and great job on following instructions !!!

Question: can I use the weight loss tracker without using the workout manager? i.e. can I adjust the weight loss tracker manually?

I'm down 2 pounds since starting the Paleo/Primal eating plan Saturday morning... and that's with just my morning treadmill workouts.

Of course.. unlike Deanna ... I had gained back the weight I had initially lost the first few months.....

but.... as we say.... :p

Progress, not Perfection !!!

I am pretty sure you can, Susan. Because when I first did it, I think I put in my current numbers and then noticed that box to check for importing my info from workout manager. Its funny, I've been wondering how to get a ticker for a while, but just stumbled onto the Cathe Fun button a day or so ago and poof, there it was.

I did Cardio and Wts Step premix only. Was fun.

so far
Protein shake (actually not sure if that is considered PP or not)
salmon and tomatoes early lunch
afternoon rest of salmon and sweet potato (passed up fast food on way home from airport-considered chicken sandwich and tossing bun, etc)

Thanks for paleo feedback susan! I think nap and primal chapter are next- I didn't get enough sleep last night.

FnV - great job on the workout and the food !!!

I guess I'm going to have to start trying some fish.... I eat shrimp, clams, crab and lobster... but have never liked fish fish.... sigh.... gonna have to give some of it a try.....

okay... testing my weight loss sticker... lol

ETA: Yea !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Evening :)

I was planning on coming come and doing one of The Firm 20 min workouts. However after the day I had I needed a more STRENUOUS workout, so I did 47 min of Butts and Guts.

After the conversation I had with my relief last week, she became defensive again today. I am not going to go into detail because it is not worth it. Anyway I worked it out with Butts and Guts. :)

I will see what happens tomorrow. At this age I really do not want to start another job, but it really seems like those heffa's are trying to push me out. :(

Deanna

Hello ladies, it really does help knowing all of you are here for me, well each other! It's very encouraging just being here to vent and knowing that nobody is giving me a hard time about being in a funk, so thanks! :)

FnV....I like your take on things...yes, I'm working on a different aspect of my fitness right now! Today it was called working 10 hrs, coming straight home and then leaving again to go Xmas shopping with my hubby. We did have success, we bought his mom a new kitchen table with 6 new chairs, she was in need of a new set!!

Deanna...good job with work!!

Susan...congrats on the 2 lbs....cant wait to get the holiday out of the way so I can be a little less busy!!!

Hoping for a break even at weigh in tomorrow but not expecting miracles!

Morning,

My cold symtoms have set in. I coughed all through the night, my sinus are draining. Needless to say I did not get a good night sleep.

Well I am going to get a early start at work because I MAY have a very busy day.

I will check back later.
Deanna

Ha ha, Deanna, today you can thank your co worker for helping you with your workout! Just keep keeping your side of the street clean! Can you try praying for her and the other heifers? At the earlier stages of my divorce, I needed to pray for my ex-- a lot. It brought me some peace. You can't fix them or change them anyway. So that is my 12 Step share for the day. ; )

Last night I watched 2 hour show on PBS about Darwin and genetics and evolution and then went to bed with Primal Blueprint. The genetic info from the Nova/Nature show dovetailed coincidentally with the chapter I was reading. Maybe its the Universe telling me to go Primal~

Stacy, I think if you read Primal, you'd feel empowered to read that an active lifestyle (working 10 hours) with an accent on fun (shopping with family??lol maybe not) is physiologically normal and he doesn't really encourage the unnatural behavior of frequent long high intensity cardio sessions (stress, injury)

Susan, I bought a bag of frozen wild alaskan salmon filets from target grocery, all individually wrapped and sealed. It made it easier to manage and took out the ick factor of having fish. Then I prepared a few by smearing some oil on them and throwing a layer of seasoning (I used Grill Mate Montreal Seasoning, prob too much NaCl) and then overcooked them. Had some hot, some cold next day.

I am posting so much, u guys are gonna be happy to see me go back to work and school. : )

Good luck on weigh ins everyone.
So far-
I've done (amazingly) well at eliminating grains and sugar.
Dramatically reduced my cheese and dairy intake.
I've added protein/meat to my meals.
I've NOT done as well as adding lots of veggies (Susan we are twins on this?)

Last eve I hit the dance studio and took about an hour and half of dance classes, love love love. I will be back to report workout~~ HUGS

I am going to TRY to kill them with kindness today. ;)

Ms. Crabby Patty just came in and I greated her with a :D and Morning. She just rolled her eyes.....ROFL

Stacy - sending lots of hugs your way !!! I think you are doing really well considering that you just spent a weekend with the family and all that unhealthy food. That was tough and you've come through a bit down, but not out..... so good job !!!!!

Deanna - As FnV said.. just keep your side of the street clean. You can't change them... only your attitude towards them. Doesn't mean you have to give in... just means that you have to realize that they aren't going to change and you need to make your peace with that. Given the current economy and unemployment rates, probably not a good time to go job hunting :(

And yes... I think FnV has it exactly right ...lol. You can thank your co-worker for inspiring you to work out harder.... :p

FnV - since you are currently reading Primal Blueprint, I have decided to read Wheat Belly first... then we can compare notes !! Are you reading Primal Blueprint or the Primal Blueprint 21 Day Transformation? I've got the 21 day one .....

here's where I'm at.....

I also am doing really really well on no grains and no sugar.

It has been surprisingly easy and I'm feeling much better with no wheat.
I keep hearing about the "carb flu" from the change in eating habits and am ready for it if and when it strikes. Some people seem to get it early on and some don't get it until they've been eating this way for 3 or 4 weeks.

Protein at every meal - beef and shrimp mostly and a little chicken.

Only dairy is Greek yogurt and the half n half in my morning coffee.

I've varied my fruit some lately... was only doing berries.. now I've added back oranges, apples and bananas. I needed more variety.

I was doing really well on veggies Sat thru Tues. Yesterday.. not so good.
My goal is 2 veggies and one salad per day... and.. I'm not going to be so focused on trying to eat a ton of different veggies each day. I think if I eat different veggies each day, then the variety over the whole week is what's important. so one veggie with lunch, one with dinner and a small salad with one meal too.

The 2 big differences that I see between Primal and Paleo are:

1) Paleo advocates lean protein. Primal advocates more fat.
I believe that I will fall in the middle. I do know.. from the last several days.. that it is the fat that makes you feel full so that you aren't interested in snacking or eating processed foods. But some on the Primal message boards, IMHO, go overboard on the saturated fat. So I shall stick to the middle of the road on that one.

2) Primal is more lenient on other foods. Both plans stress protein, veggies and healthy fats (olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, and, in moderation, nuts. I have not tried coconut oil yet... it looks gross....

Where they differ is that Paleo says no dairy. Primal says dairy is okay unless you have issues with dairy.

Primal says a little white rice every now and then won't kill you. Paleo says stay away from it 100%.

Research continues :p

Okay.... I think I shall bypass the gym today... my friend is not going today... and go downstairs.. right this minute and do Muscle Max Upper Body Premix !!!

back later with a report

Make it a great day my friends..

We CAN do this... we ARE doing this.

Progress, not Perfection !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ladies,

Deanna congrats on massage. I need one too!

Susan, I am reading and enjoying Primal Blueprint. I did more of a rapid scan of Paleo Diet. He was a tough read. I look forward to hearing Wheat Belly reports but also appreciate your take on Primal if you keep up with 21 day plan.

I agree regarding the Primal vs Paleo fat. By adding meat, I'm adding fat. I don't need to go out of my way to pursue higher fat. I guess the sticky point there would be situations like choosing real cream for coffee vs lite half n half if you were doing dairy or FF Greek yogurt vs full fat yogurt? I think if grains and non fruit sugars are removed, many veggies and some fruits added, the other details are more flexible, including small amts of rice or dairy or whatever.

How did MM go? I was wondering if anyone wanted to join me in a one body part a day this week. I started with MM Chest and was very challenged. I also did HIS Step cardio.

Gotta move on, will peek back later~ Stacy hope you are having a good day.

Hi Ladies,
I agree regarding the Primal vs Paleo fat.

I agree 100%. I figure I'm getting enough fat from the meat and from cooking with olive oil and using olive oil for my salad dressing mix....

and.. yes.. the dilemma at the moment is: Continue with my FF half n half or go to real half n half? Continue with my FF Greek yogurt or switch to regular Greek yogurt?

I have added a little more fruit back in to my eating habits. I was only doing 1 cup of blueberries per day, but I was starting to feel lightheaded sometimes.

I think that is from so drastically cutting out all grains and sugars... my body is learning to adjust. So I am now eating 2 or 3 servings of fruit per day and including berries of all kinds, apples, bananas and oranges and the light headedness has gone away.

I'm going to tweak... the 1/2 and 1/2 and yogurt issues, and the amount of fruit and see what works and what doesn't.

I think it would be real easy to slip into a pattern of eating too much fruit - for the natural sugar factor... so I think 3 servings per day is absolute max for me and 2 will be the norm.. once my body adjusts.

I'm still aiming for a nice gentle 1 to 1 1/2 pound loss per week.....

I have read on the Primal message boards that if your weight loss stalls and you are eating moderate amounts of dairy and fruit, that they need to be eliminated to re-start the weight loss... and just keep tweaking to get the right balance.

The foundation always being protein, veggies and healthy fats... then tweak the dairy and fruit and whatever else you are eating. They do talk about doing Primal 80% of the time... or 90%.. but allowing leeway on the other %s. Kind of like our overall Progress, not Perfection philosophy !!!!!

and I think that once I get back to my regular workout schedule and with this new eating plan, that losing a pound or two per week will be eminently doable.

I'm in for One Body Part Per Day....

I did do Muscle Max Upper Body Premix this morning.... with ultra light weights..... lol It felt great !!!

Just tell me what body part to do for tomorrow !!! You're the coach !!

Deanna - Congratulations on winning a massage !!!!

Way to go girl... just what you needed !!!!

Woo Hoo !!!

Take that heifers... hehehehehehehe

FnV - thanks for the tip on the wild Alaskan salmon at Target.. I'll look for it and see if I can eat it... lol

So far today, I have eaten:

large mug of coffee
half n half.. mix of regular and FF... lol.. hedging my bets :p

3 scrambled eggs
3 slices Oscar Meyer Center Cut bacon (it's much leaner than other bacons)
one medium banana

for lunch.. I'm going to try something I read on the Internet yesterday:

put one can of tuna in a bowl.. With a fork, break it up.
Take one whole avocado... Mash it up with a fork or a potato masher.
Add to the tuna.
Add a small dash of salt
Mix it all up.
Season with fresh lemon juice to taste.

I'm thinking of adding some chopped tomato to it also......

I'll let ya know how it turns out....

off to do housework.. must straighten up and vacuum....

ADT guy is coming at 2:00 to discuss installing an alarm system.. sigh

"A Typical Conversation With My Mom" Tales Of Mere Existence - YouTube

Susan, everytime you say you don't like fish, I think of this. His procrastination video is very funny too. Tales of Mere Existence

Tell me how you enjoy the tuna. I ate a can the other day by just pouring lemon juice on it. I just needed the protein/meat thing before I ran out the door. Yours sounds better!

Sorry about your neighborhood break ins. I've had 2 homes broken into, it feels terrible, very violating. And you feel vulnerable afterward, I am sure you are feeling that too. I hope they catch the perps.

I've had a bit of yogurt too but mostly switched to black coffee, which I like OK, too. Also some Feta in my salad. Cheese can be binge food for me, so I am trying to focus on the other stuff right now and treat dairy more as a no no or as a condiment. To me, cows milk is for baby cows and processed cows milk is for??? But like I said, yum.

BTW, sweet potatoes Yes on Primal, No on Paleo?

Do you mind doing Back tomorrow? Any Other Check Mates in on this?

"Back" is great for tomorrow..... are you using a DVD or just doing random back exercises?

I'm drawing a blank on the sweet potato in Paleo question... lol... getting old.. I'll have to look it up....
Definitely a yes on Primal...

I'm staying away from cheese... too tempting for me... and I am not a milk person much.... so just 1/2 and 1/2 for coffee and some yogurt every couple of days. And that's really for the texture... I miss the creaminess of it....almost like a dessert with some fresh blueberries or strawberries..

ADT man is here.. doorbell.... later...

First of all, UGH! I just found a tiny white worm/larvae thing wriggling around in my blackberries after I had eaten several of them! Of course now I think I am probably going to be infested with parasites. Blech.

Susan, I was planning on just doing each chapter of MM, just one body part a day. Today I did the Chest. We can do the same DVD or just pick one you like?

I might run to mall for some browsing. We aren't doing too much for Christmas, but I'd like the girls to have at least one gift to open from just because that is fun.

How'd ADT go?

Have a good eve all!

I'm late to the check-in with not much to add :( I have enjoyed staying in the loop vicariously thru all of you!!

Today was another long work day, then out to do grocery shopping for a Xmas Eve get together and then I'm making some crock pot cheesy potatoes to take to the inlaws on Xmas day. Eating was another failure today, and again no workout. I feel like when I'm not mentally in the game, everything else seems to fall apart.

But Saturday is the day. I'll have 4 days off of work in a row, people arent coming over til 4pm and then on Xmas we dont have to be anywhere until 2pm so I can workout those days and then I also will workout Monday and Tuesday.

I've had so much on my mental checklist for Xmas that I really havent devoted any time or energy to my own health. I'm just trying to get by at this point, but still not eating well.

I'm hoping I"m not bringing anyone down :(

The funk will be forced on Saturday even if it takes a "Just Do It" attitude! Thanks for all the support, it's meant alot!!

I'm ready to start with some Primal action!!

G'nite!

Morning, I am not feeling to good this morning. I was up coughing again all night. TGIF and I only work from 7am to noon today. On my way home I am going to stop and get me some Alka-Selzer Plus Day and Night. I am going to doctor on myself this Holiday weeked so whatever I have does not turn into the Flu.

Have a good day Ladies
Deanna
