PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION: Month 1

Good morning, I'm late to the party, but I had to take my dog to the vet. I dont know what workout I'm going to do today, I was thinking something from Cathe's Terminator dvd???

Susan...do try PUB today, it's really good!! And I'm likin' your positive attitude, can really tell you're in in it to win it!!

Deanna...I dont even know how to post an avatar lol....something new to learn I guess!

FnV...even if you're not 102 anymore, sounds like your new lifestyle is so much more healthy!! Pat yourself on the back!!

With regard to Turbo Barre...I just use a chair. I also dont have the band Cathe uses either, I just tie my regular length band and make it shorter. This workout has no dread factor b/c hey you workout in barefeet, how tough can it be?! Then....slowly...with each pulse....Cathe makes you scream for mercy, the whole time she is smiling of course!! I like that it also works the calves, something lacking in a lot of workouts. For upper body you work only the biceps, shoulders and triceps and 5 lbs is plenty heavy enough!! She also has two ab exercises I havent done before that I really feel. One is hard to explain but the other is like a reverse bicycle move, when you bring your elbows/upper body up you'd traditionally be bringing up your knee to meet your upper body in a standard bicycle move, this one has you extending your leg as you bring up your upper body...really feel it all over the core!

I'll report back later!

I did my BBTS1 workout, I am out of shape as far as wts go, but it was fun.

I will post later a link to my fitness progression or message you (all).

mid-day report...

Did 3.5 good pace miles on the treadmill...

for breakfast, I had a bowl of oatmeal (1/2 cup dry cooked on the stove the old-fashioned way), 1/8 cup 2% milk and a small banana.

for early lunch :p (I'm always starving when I get home from the gym), I had a 2 egg omelet with 1/2 oz cheddar cheese and my 2nd mug of java..

off to do Christmas stuff... My plan is to do Upper Body mid-to-late afternoon... we shall see... lol

Deanna - I had vowed a long long time ago to never put a picture of myself (or any real detailed personal info) on the internet for security reasons.... but I might be persuaded to do an avatar here.. just for you !!! but I don't have any recent photos of myself.... so... I'll have to ponder the issue.. lol

back later..

We are all back on track !!!

Yea team !!! We ROCK !!! (tm FnV)

STRESSFUL DAY AT WORK!!!! OFF TO THE GARGAE TO DO AT LEAST 1 HOUR OF HARDCORE CARDIO WITH CATHE. BBL

DEANNA

PS: SORRY FOR ALL CAPS BUT I AM PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay, i feel much better. :)

I decided to do Low Max Warm up, Step Combo's 1-5 and the Stretch. I have no idea how many minutes that was. This dvd is 69 min long and has warm up, combo's 1-7 and the stretch. I am having my protien drink for dinner along with water. I am using Lean Protien, I added fresh fruit (Mango, Banana, Watermelon) and water.

Hopefull tomorrow will be a better day, but I have a feelling its not. I just need to find a way to deal with them old crabby patties. They are going to drive me back to Therapy!

Okay I will see you all for coffee in the am.
Deanna

DOH! Sorry about your work, Deanna!

Susan, u can take pics with your new phone and send them to yourself : )

I understand about privacy online but I will put some progression photos on my workout manager or something. Those can be kept visible only to Cathe friends. I'm open to it b/c I already have a dramatic before and after and its my "after" I want to get back to.

There is so much you can find out online anyway- its degrees of privacy. Ha, I found an interesting guy on a dating website. Based on his little bit of info on his profile, I was able to determine that he was a professor at my college, found his FB page where he actually wrote his cell phone number on his wall, saw all his pics and I knew his work schedule by looking at the classes. I could have kept going... Heh heh, well, now you know I am a stalker. Anyway, internet sleuthing is easy if someone wants to go digging around. I hope to find new employment soon, I really don't feel comfortable posting here all the time, but yooz guys is my peeps. So hopefully what I say wouldn't ever be taken in a negative light.

Stacy, thanks for the TB info. How the heck does Cathe look so relaxed, smiling, in all her workouts?

Well I never did workout, life got in the way. I ended up going to the grocery store, doing 2 loads of laundry, cleaning out the flower beds, stringing outside lights and then going xmas shopping with hubby. Dinner wasnt healthy....mall food court. Busy day tomorrow, working then going to xmas concert so no workout for me. I think I'm in "maintain" mode for the next 2 weeks!

Morning :)

Got up early and came to work to finish up some stuff. If I have enough energ this eveing I am going to do Low Max again or at least a 30 min workout.

Make it a great day.
Deanna

I like Low Max, I hardly ever get all the way thru to the final combos- I think of a 70 min workout as an option and usually choose one of the premixes or just run it and quit after a point, I think when it gets to a the kicking side kick- I am too tired to figure out where to put my feet and I've had a very solid workout by then.

I did BB TS 2. Ball work for abs and some hi lo for the cardio, neither my fave, but still fun quick and hard.

bbl

Hey Fnv, you are righ 70 min is along time and after combo #5 lastnight I was done. LOL However I would like to finish the complete dvd one day, that is my goal. Yesterday was the second or third time I did the dvd. Like I said IF I have enough energy this evening I will be at it again.

Great job on the workouts Deanna and FnV !!! I'll join Stacy in the not so great category.. although I did do my treadmill in the morning and drank a lot of water... not so good on the food yesterday.

I've been reading the thread in Open Discussion about the Paleo Diet. FnV, I saw you over there :)

Any thoughts on that way of eating? Any good books?

hmmmmmmm..... I might jump in to that and give it a try......

Susan, I requested the books from my library. Here's what I think--My heart tells me that I should be eating like Furman/china study- mostly plants, some cooked, some not, beans, nuts- a naturally low fat plant based diet with maybe a serving of grains here and there.

But--- I want to get lean and stay there, I want to feel good and energetic. Believing in something I don't practice isn't helping me.

Previous experience:
I was highly skeptical of Wen - poof- miracle hair.
Extremely highly skeptical of clarisonic- poof- jaw dropping improvement in my skin.
Skeptical that any affordable topical skin care would have benefit- poof- again dramatic results.
Now Cathe is interested in this type of eating? I am going to check it out. It can't be worse for me than what I do now.

This forum and Cathe are so cutting edge of fitness, health, and are still balanced. We really benefit from so many smart, well researched women here.

Also, the author wrote a book on diet and acne connection, I am further intrigued...

PS, good job on the treadmill and water, Susan.

FnV - I'm in the same boat. My heart and mind tell me that I should be a vegetarian, because, to me, eating a primarily plant based diet "sounds" healthier and I am a huge animal lover and have great difficulty reconciling my love of animals with being a meat eater. (not to start a debate here about that... just saying.. as a point of reference that that's where my heart is.)

OTOH, back 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 :p years ago when I was lean and fit, I was eating the - then - standard American diet. NOT a lot of processed foods as there are today.... but... meat, poultry, fish, lots of veggies and fruits.... all home-cooked, natural whole foods.

Yes.. we also ate bread and pasta and pancakes, but again, they were homemade, not as highly processed as today, and cakes and pies were homemade.. not bought...... and they were the exception.

For dinner we had, meat, potatoes and veggies/salad. Eggs for breakfast.. not every day... but often... butter....

Whole, natural, unprocessed foods.. home cooked.

This Paleo/Primal diet differs in that it eliminates all grains and legumes.. but otherwise, it's essentially what I grew up eating..

sooooo... tis a puzzlement....

I read the Dr. Ornish types.. who eliminate all meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs and go whole grain, plant based.

Then I read the Paleo/Primal plans and they go the exact opposite route.

I have no clue what the answer is....... I do think.. and have for a while.. that I have a slight gluten intolerance.. not full blown celiac disease, but a bit of an intolerance..... and I do know from personal experience that eating a lot of wheat makes me very very tired and bloated...

so I think I'm going to give this Paleo/Primal plan a try.... I just ordered a couple of books from Amazon.

okay... I have wasted the last 4 HOURS looking at this stuff.....

Must get moving...

later...

Today has been the day from HE**!! Super busy at work, forget my lunch, didnt eat breakfast, was feeling light headed at work and behold a tray of Xmas cookies...so I had 2 cookies, a brownie and half a chocolate covered pretzel!! I hate admitting how piggish I was but best to cleanse the soul so to speak. Needless to say, my stomach hurts. I'm going right here from work to my nephew's Xmas concert so who knows when I'll eat something decent today :(

I briefly read everyone's posts...

Susan we sound the exact same with the longing to be vegetarian, liking animals yet still eating meat. I struggle with my own hypocrisy!

Deanna..good luck with Low Max!!

FnV...good job with keeping up with some workouts, I need to do the same!

I dont know much about the Paleo diet, gonna have to read about it....

Gotta run...

Stacy - it's no wonder you felt lightheaded... yikes... ya gotta eat girl. Eating some cookies and brownies was better than going all day without any food... not ideal.. certainly.. but better than nothing... geeze..

From what I've read, the Paleo and Primal diets are basically the same:

Protein - meat, poultry, fish, eggs
Lots of veggies
Some fruit
Oils - olive oil, avocados, nuts in moderation, butter is allowed
No wheat, rye, barley, no oatmeal, no rice
Whole food.. unprocessed.
They have a lot of similarities to a gluten-free diet......

But there are a couple of differences between the Paleo and Primal:

Paleo - no legumes/beans and no dairy
Primal - some dairy, a little rice once in a while is okay. Legumes and beans are not recommended but okay in moderation occasionally.

The Paleo book that I ordered is by Robb Wolf.. I think it's called The Paleo Solution

The other one is by Mike Sisson - The Primal Diet 21 Day Transformation or something like that :D He writes a blog called Mike's Daily Apple that several people on these forums have referred to.

I'm going to give it a shot.... 6 months.. and see what happens...

I need something .. what I'm doing is not working.. and it's not the fault of the exercise workouts.. those are great.. it's what I'm eating that's not working...

Good morning, today I woke up with a "what's the point attitude". Today is weigh-in day, I planned on avoiding the scale b/c I knew I had gained even if just for the fact that I ate a super late dinner last night which included salty pretzels, so why disappoint myself by stepping on the scale?? Then my thoughts went to my office Xmas party that is tomorrow and then to going out of town this weekend to celebrate Xmas with part of the family and all the junk food that will be there and so on and so on.....

So as I sit here sipping coffee, I decided all of these obstacles dont have to be my downfall if I dont let them. So I stepped on the scale, prepared to deal with the number and move on...of course I'm down 1 lb from Monday. However, I know this is a water weight fluctuation, but still better mentally than seeing the 2 lb gain that I feel my body has put on. So before work I am going to do abs and then a "Susan workout"...hehe....3 miles on the treadmill.

Today we are short staffed at work so I doubt I'll have time for lunch. I'm going to make sure I have oatmeal before I leave the house, then take along some almonds to munch on to keep myself away from the sweets at work! I have been slacking on the water (this is more daunting a task for me than working out!) so going to try my best today with the water.

You ladies and this Forum really helped my mood this morning b/c I didnt want to bring anyone down here and everyone has been doing so well I didnt want to be the only slacker!!!

Have a good day everyone, I'll check back later!

Progress not Perfection, one day at a time!

Go get 'em Stacy !!! You're doing great !!!

I'm about to weigh myself... lol

But have to get dressed and head to the gym for my "Susan workout."

more later...

We CAN do this... we ARE doing this !!!

Morning Ladies

Stacy, don't be so hard on yourself, remember Progress not perfection.

I have not jumped on the scale in over a month soon to be two. This is the holiday season and you know what that means, cookies, cakes and pies every where you look. Just keep moving you will be fine. :)

No workout for me yesterday. I worked from 5am - 4pm and I worked through my lunch and ate at my desk. Majority of my work that is due the 1st of January is done.

The job is having a Christmas Pot Luck today which will be In and Out burgers and fries. One of the Executives at work is having a get together at a Mexican resturant tonight after work, and I will be going just to have a Margarita or two. ;)

This month will be over soon and hopefully everything will get back to normal. Everyone in the world will be trying to join a gym, start diet something to lose weight. I don't know about you ladies, but I am feeling good because we have been exercising and trying to eat right for months now so we have the upper hand. :)

Keep your heads up ladies and remember we are doing great.
Make it a wonderful day
Deanna

The books I requested from the library were:
Title The Paleo diet : lose weight and get healthy by eating the foods you were designed to eat Author Cordain, Loren, 1950- Publisher:Wiley,Pub date:c2011.Pages:xv, 266 p. ;ISBN:9780470913024
and a cookbook by same author---both available for pick up

Maybe I will bike to library for my warm up or cool down today!

Susan wrote: I read the Dr. Ornish types.. who eliminate all meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs and go whole grain, plant based. Then I read the Paleo/Primal plans and they go the exact opposite route.

But! maybe what they have in common that get the same results are a diet very high veggies and low in fat. ??? More will be revealed....

And Stacy wrote: I decided all of these obstacles dont have to be my downfall if I dont let them

Great point of view, my friend, thank you for sharing. That is what will keep us out of victim mentality. At any given time, one of us is "slacking" and usually none of us is doing it perfectly, but we are here to support each other thru it all.

Deanna, I keep trying to add pics- in my workout manager, I uploaded pics, but I can't rearrange them. Anyway, here is my before and my skinny jody goal pic is in the album.

Deanna and Stacy - great attitudes !!! We are doing it....

and.. as FnV said - we are here to support each other thru our ups and downs, good days and bad days. We have the best support team EVER !!

FnV - as you said.. the one thing all these diets agree on is lots of veggies !!!!

I just posted in the other thread.... I think I'm going to take this in stages.. and stage 1 is essentially a gluten free diet. no wheat/rye/barley i.e. no gluten and no sugar.

The rest will be unprocessed foods. Whole, natural foods.

Lean protein (meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy), lots of veggies, some fruit, moderation in: oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, nuts; butter allowed; healthy oils in olive oil, avocados.

soooo.. lean protein, veggies, healthy oils and easy on the brown rice and oatmeal. and NO sugar... lol

It's a start....

My books should arrive from Amazon in a couple of days... I'll read them through..... and.... I have my annual physical with my doctor tomorrow. However, I don't hink they teach nutrition in med school so he probably won't be any help... lol

Off to finish my Christmas errands. I think/hope this is the last trip......
