Pro-Corn Syrup Commercial??

OMG!! I just saw a PRO-CORN SYRUP commercial. Sponsored by the Corn Refiners Association , the Washington lobbyist group that represents the processing companies that produce corn syrup. Follow the link to check out their claims that HFCS is completely OK.

The commercial had two women drinking some sort of sweetened beverage. One woman was apparently dismayed that her friend was putting corn syrup in her body. Her friend promptly smacked that down, telling her that it's "natural and perfectly fine, in moderation, just like other sweeteners". Then the first lady tells the second lady that she really likes her cute top, like "Oh, well, I guess I was totally misinformed and you schooled me. Nice shirt!"
I just love it when lobbyist insult my intelligence AND my gender in a single 30-second spot.

I guess I must have imagined all that research about HFCS that said it was basically the dietary equivalent of the Devil. Why would the people who sell corn syrup lie?

I saw that commercial and thought 'HOLY CRAP!' (among other things) Is that absolutely ridiculous or what? Anything to make a buck!

Maybe they have gotten wind of my idea of the class action lawsuit against them for getting this country into the obesity mess we are in!! They're trying to proactively work against it...... they're evil!

Ok, I sound like a fanatic..... I'm sort of kidding, but sort of not.... I think the only way we can fight this way is the same way we fought cigarettes. Who's with me?

Because they want to make money. If you repeat a lie enough times there will be a lot of people who believe it. It's a frequently used technique in marketing and politics.

I saw a similar one. A couple in a park: she's eating a Popsicley thing and offers a bite to her sweetie. He refuses, saying it's got corn syrup in. She says "and so?" He says "you know what they say about it." She asks him what, but he can't think of anything off hand. Then she goes into the "it's made from corn (so is some fuel!), it's natural, and is fine in moderation.

Yeah...not!

I can see a positive thing to these ads in a twisted kind of way. It might mean that enough people are starting to avoid HFCS to cause the industry to be concerned about losing market share. Hopefully the ads will have a reverse affect and even more people will start educating themselves about the downsides of HFCS. Hopefully there will one day be the threat of class action lawsuits. I believe that was the reason behind so many companies getting rid of partially hydrogenated oils, they knew they were highly likely to loose so they 'voluntarily' got rid of them.

On the other hand I haven't seen one of these ads yet but I'm sure they would make me want to puke.

I saw the popsicle commercial and actually didn't *get* it b/c it seemed so bizarre. Then I saw it again and realized they really were saying high fructose corn syrup is good for you!
What the heck!?!? R U Kidding me!?!?!?!
And yet the dairy industry has had to change all their commercials to say it *Might* help with weight loss. Insanity!

I saw that commercial and was also like WTH?? It actually took a minute to register. There are all sorts of things that are natural - tobacco, marijuana, mercury, arsenic, japenese blowfish - and I'm quite sure they're not good for me.

I don't think you sound crazy AT ALL. I agree that the corn refinery agribusiness corporations and their lobbyists are, if not actually evil, so focused on profits that they might as well be evil.

I agree with an earlier poster that this IS good, in a way: people avoiding HFCS must be cutting into their profit margins, it's the only reason they'd spend $$ on an advertising campaign...of lies.

I saw that too! They must be doing a major push because I started seeing print ads, too. The sad thing is, many people will be misled because most people won't take the time to really look into the facts and could be swayed by these commercials :(.

Just chiming in to say - me too! I thought I misheard the dialogue, but NO - it really sounded like the gist of the message was HFCS is really not that bad for you "in moderation."

I said to my DH, "What HFCS-containing product do you know of that actually has a 'moderate' amount in it?" Most products with HFCS are loaded with it!!

And how much HFCS can you consume in 'moderation' or a 'moderate amount' anyway?

Especially when it's IN EVERYTHING. There's might be only a "moderate" amount in your bread, jam, lunchmeat, baked goods, crackers, cookies, teas and sodas, granola bars, and condiments, but if you add it all up, believe me, it's BEYOND moderate.

Ugh.

You are so right! It is in *everything*! Ever since I really started eliminating the HCFS, I've found how many things it is in!! Ketchup, BBQ sauce, yogurt, bread, crackers, snack bars, etc. I haven't seen the commercial, I can't believe they'd try to pass it off as a healthy substitute!!

Yeah - I saw this one too. I didn't get it either at first and had to keep reminding myself to pay closer attention when it came on next until I finally caught the whole thing. Then I sort of said, huh? They are saying it is good for you??? I had to admit - very clever on their part. Very, very clever advertising. It will get many to think that it is ok to eat it. We are a small minority who know better, and shame on that industry. Of course, is it going to kill me if I eat something once in a while that has it. No. Do I buy products that have it? Absolutely not. 8 year old DH knows to read ingredient lists and what to look for too.

Very true. I agree that it won't kill you to eat it once in a while, but I try to avoid buying products that have it, especially in the first few ingredients!. Good for teaching your 8yo also. My 9yo dd went to church camp this summer & they had jelly on the table. She said she read the label and it was the first ingredient so she would NOT eat it. LOL Then she told the Pastor that he shouldn't eat it either... LOL!!!! (I buy Allfruit and natural PB for their PB & J's!)

I just re-read this post and wondered. Isn't the commercial about high fructose corn syrup and not corn syrup? I think it is but not sure. It is the HFCS that has gotten the bad press lately. Whole Foods won't carry a product that has it, but I don't think they are that way with regular corn syrup. Hmmmm, now my curiousity is going to get the best of me :)

Ahhh, just found the commercials on youtube. Here you go if interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE5aSUcU3YA

(Don't know what that is all about at the end- the political stuff.)

I saw that commercial too and could not believe it. The commercial I saw with the couple having a picnic with the Popsicle seemed to be mocking people that had concerns about consuming it. While it is not something that I would freak out about consuming on a rare occasion it is certainly not something I would want to include as a moderate part of my daily diet. What is next a pro partially hydrogenated oil commercial?
