price increase of milk

Have any of you seen or heard this? My sister said the price went up to almost $4 a gallon (this is for the store brand!). I haven't bought milk for a few days so I don't know....

Thanks!
Sara

I don't drink milk, but I have heard of the price going up quite a bit in recent months, not just over the last few days. I'm not sure why, exactly, although increasing fuel costs may be at least partially to blame (it costs more to truck milk from the dairies to the customers).

My DH informed me that the price of milk has been going up because of gasoline. LOL I know it sounds funny but here's the scoop. Atleast part of the reason that gas is so expensive nowadays is because they are using ethanol in the gasoline. Ethanol is made from corn and is VERY expensive to produce apparently. So now the farmers need to produce alot more corn to not only feed the cows who make milk for us but also to be used in the production of ethanol so I think the cost of milk is going up to help pay for the cost of the larger crops of corn...or something like that! LOL

I'm polish so I may be a little confused but I think I have the basic idea correct!:p

You know, my step-dad is a farmer with corn being his major crop. He has not mentioned one thing about producing more corn, ethanol, etc. I will have to ask him about that.

I do know that my family will be cutting back on milk!!!
I have a family of five and we go through 3-4 gallons a week. With tax, that would be about $80 a month just for milk. For now on, water will be served with dinner!!!!

I read in the paper a few weeks ago that milk was going to go up to over $4 a gallon. Well, the ethanol being made from corn is correct. But my understanding is that ethanol is much cheaper to produce than gasoline. We bought a new Suburban six months ago and you can put ethanol in it. Ethanol is about 20 cents cheaper than gasoline. My opinion of ethanol is it might be cheaper than gasoline, but it burns much quicker in the gas tank than unleaded gasoline does.

So, I don't know if the theory of milk going up is because of the production of ethanol from corn or not. The government is trying to get more and more states to have ethanol production plants. Most new cars can burn it and within a few years they say all cars by government rule will burn it. That is cars built in 2007 and up.

It actually takes more energy to produce a x amount of ethanol than that amount of ethanol provides - it's an incredibly wasteful process.

I think the technology of converting corn (and other plants) to ethanol is improving, but I still would not consider ethanol to be a "clean" fuel by any means.

It is correct that ethanol is not as efficient a fuel as gasoline. So while it may cost less per gallon compared with gas, it takes more of it to go the same distance - so it's probably a wash by the time all is said and done.

I heard what Wendy and Emily heard. I also heard that Ice cream has a price increase of .50 cents a scoop  .

Ethanol may be cheaper to produce, but the semi trucks that transport it do not run on ethanol, they run on gasoline. So when the cost of transporting a good to the market place increases, that cost is passed onto the consumer. They getcha anyway they can!

Jordon....lol!!! I took my kids for some ice cream the other day at a local "park and eat" ice cream shop. We all got cones (small and baby sized) and it was $7!!!! Crazy, huh?

Sigh. Of course I have a little three foot milk guzzler. Too bad he doesn't take gas like the car ;)

It's not denial. I'm just selective about the reality I accept.

I am actually more of a milk guzzler then my son lately! He likes it but will take juice or water just as easily. I eat lots of cereal and make lots of protein shakes with f/f milk. I've had soy milk and it's alright but I prefer the real thing. I guess I'll just have to pay the piper...*sigh*

When you drink bottled water, you're paying over $20 a gallon for the stuff. I don't drink bottled water so I can have other things I like, like milk. I can't afford them both.

I live in California and we passed $4 for a gallon of milk many moons ago. The last time I bought Milk at Safeway it was up to $4.69. The two weeks before it was $4.49. I have no idea what it is now, because I won't buy milk from there anymore. That $4.69 milk had that 'I've been sitting around a while' taste even though the date on it didn't expire for over a week. I refuse to pay so much for milk that is alredy beginning to spoil.

I bought milk at Smart and Final last week and it was $4 and I was thinking, 'Hey, what a bargin!' and it was fresh. :)

On the news, some places milk is $5.00. I went into Dollar General thinking it would be cheaper, it wasn't. It was $4.00. Went to Food Lion, it was $3.50 a gallon give or take. Went to Sam's today to get another gallon. Forgot to check price. Probably around 3.00 or so, give and take. Too bad we can't drink gasoline, it is cheaper. ;) Annette

Check out Parmalat. It's a european milk that sterilized before packaging. Until the packaging is opened it does not need to be refrigerated. It will keep for years un opened and unrefrigerated.

Comes in 1 liter packages.
