Popping cartilage

 I get a small popping sound in my left knee when I do squats. Is there anyway to relieve or stop this since my legs are the areas I really want to tone and lose fat on? (It doesn't happen all the time but enough to make me think about not doing squats, lunges are okay)Thanks!

My knees do that all the time, even when I walk, I have now named my knees snap, crackle and pop LOL I was going to talk to my doctor again about that, the last time I mentioned it he said not to do the squats because of the cartilage in the knee.

Welcome to the exciting world of getting older - LOL! My knees are full of arthritic changes, according to x-rays five years ago when I fell and tore two ligaments. They've made noise for about 15 years now. I've learned to ignore it. If nothing hurts or feels different, I wouldn't worry about it. I do squats with 35 pounds on my barbell, and there are days my knees sound like Rice Krispies - Snap! Crackle! Pop! LOL!!

:)

P.S. Leslie that's so funny because I just read your post after I posted mine! You're a "snap, crackle, pop" too! :)

I am not sure what this means but by son had popping sounds when he would get up and walk around from the around 10 years old. I have had this off and on for many years but with no pain. I have heard that if there is pain too that is the time to seek help. The sounds are not there all of the time anymore.

Hi,

The "popping" sound which you are describing could be a few things...We have four major ligaments around our knee: The Medial Collateral Ligament, The Lateral Collateral, Posterior Cruciate, and the Anterior Crutiate - all holding the knee in place. All, which need special care not to injure. (warm-up, cool down, stretch, strengthen the muscles around the knee...)

As we age and as we work out, the cartilage which covers the top of the bones (Articular Catilage) connected to the knee - femur, tibia, and patella wears down and gets small tears or causes the build up of Synovial fluid which gives us that stiff feeling sometimes. Well, any breakdown of cartilage leads to arthritis, osteoarthritis, or tendonitis. Any fluid build up or rubbing of bones causes the popping sound.

That it is why it is important to do the things I said above. Ice the area as well. You can do anything which doesn't hurt. for squats, try going down about 45 degrees instead of 90 degrees until you build strength. As always, listen to your body.

Well, I am a sports psychologist and not a MD, but this is from years of exercise physiology. So, ask your doctor for more specifics.

Jennifit - Do you know of anyone who has had success with synvisc? I have popping due to deteriorating articular cartilage in one knee and dr. is recommending synvisc. (I've already had surgery to trim the loose cartilage on the back of the knee cap.) I am curious if you have...

RE: Jennifit - synvisc

Hi!!

Sorry, this is so late...I have not been here since last time. I cannot give a personal educated opinion on synvisc, so I asked around. Well, my doc always tell me to watch out for all of these drugs being offered for joint pain - especially the OTC brands.
I asked about particular studies relating to synvisc and the people I asked found very few credible studies.
I have been using Flaxseed oil and it has worked better than anything I've tried. (Glucosamine, etc) It is all natural and it seems to be working for me.
If you do try synvisc, make sure you can combine it with whatever else you may be taking - if anything. I know that Glucosamine interfered with my birth control and my cycle went haywire when I was on it. These supplements are not regulated at all.

So, I hope this helps a bit!?

Hi Manipool! While I am not a doctor, I have been told that popping noises and cracking noises are quite common and occur in some people more than others. I have also been told that it is generally nothing to worry about as long as it is not accompanied by pain. But if your instinct tells you differently, then I would have it checked out for piece of mind. Take Care!

What happens if there is pain in the knee cap with the popping? I have some pain but I only get the popping when I stand to long or walking. I haven't really noticed the popping sound during the exercise just the pain.

RE: Jennifit - synvisc

Well, synvisc is the knee injections of a new viscous fluid that (for example Nancy Lopez uses it) is to fill in the 'rough' spots in the articular cartilage to smooth things out and reduce wear and tear. I have already had the back of my knee cap smoothed but the grinding continues and is often accompanied (or a while later) with pain. Rarely any swelling. Just curious if you or anyone had any experience with it. I suspect the injections will be painful... (3 shots, 1 week apart)

RE: Jennifit - synvisc

Jennifit -

also - what form do you take Flaxseed oil in? I've heard rumors it helps but don't have a clue how to incorporate it into my diet.

Thanks!

RE: Jennifit - synvisc

Hi,
I just take a pill-form (gelatin pill) from Walmart!? Maybe it is the placebo effect in play, but I swear it is working...My mother, who is 60, also takes it and feels a difference. I have no idea if it the Flaxseed or my mind making me feel better, but I really do. I seem to recover from long runs more efficiently and quickly.

Let me know if you start to take it. I am curious if you think it works.

RE: Jennifit - synvisc

Are you taking the one by Nature Made or something (their 'big' name label for supplements)? I was thinking about picking some up this weekend.
