I think there is a filter that doesn't allow certain words to be posted (was it here that it's impossible to write about the store Dick's sporting goods? (we'll see when this posts!). But you can get around it by using asterisks instead of letters. I don't mind it if people do that, but when they only replace one letter with an asterisk, it's hard to miss the word.

I think most websites have to choose a "rating" that is given to search engines, like movie ratings. VF is PG. Wonder what this board is rated as?

Thanks, Kathryn. The fact that you can encode the word doesn't take away it's implication. Like you said, it would be hard to miss it.

I don't know...seems like a lot of work and little to be gained by it, IMHO.

You're both more realistic the ME! I wished for my birthday but seeing as it was November 15th., and come & gone, guess I was wrong! I am just being silly. I KNEW they wouldn't be ready by then, but like you said DeeDee, a girl can dream!

Candi,

There is a way to "ban" words but it takes a lot of work on the part of the internet/computer person in charge of the site. I know that on certain boards (ie the MVP baseball boards), your post will not go to the board until you take certain words out. This includes even words that are not profanity but perhaps offensive (ie "suck"). It is a lot of work, but perhaps there is a program that the IP can use to avoid doing it from scratch.

As Kathryn said, if someone encodes a word, it doesn't work. In my experience, that is what ends up happening even when the site impliments the banning of words through their IP.

Actually, I'm not all that realistic, I was hoping for my birthday which is Dec 20th. I know, I know...:p

i've never noticed profanity in open... i did see the ****'s and that doesn't bother me (well.. the profanity wouldn't either.. i'm a big girl) but if they've masked it then what's the big deal?

I didn't even notice that thread over on "Open Discussion" until I saw this thread warning everyone about it.

I'll say here what I said over there: I belong to another message board that would put this board to shame in regard to degradation, name-calling, and insults. Every board has posters like that...some worse than others, and this board is what I term a "pleasant respite" compared to other boards I've visited. That thread on the "Open Discussion" forum is nothing compared to threads I've seen on other boards. You just have to look the other way if you don't want to get involved in those conversations.

Our
>first ammendment allows people to express themselves how they
>choose.

i always laugh when i see this as a reason/excuse to post whatever someone wants on a message board.. message boards are NOT coverd by the first amendment... they are all PRIVATE areas.. yes it's public.. but it's private as in SNM pays the bill so they, alone, set up the rules! plus not everyone who posts on the internet is from the US (*gasp*)

now that said.. i already posted that i don't get offended by the cursing (and definitely don't get offended if it's masked!)

WARNING _ THE FOLLOWING MAY OFFEND

What provanities are we ACTUALLY talking about here?

What "one" considers a swear word, another doesnt, so where is the line you wish we didnt cross Carolyn Jane?

Ive read the words:

####
Jesus Christ
Bloody Hell
Piss
all used as a whole
and lots of ************ (which I have used myself)

How would you like the dozens of members on Open Discussion to judge what words would be acceptable to use in whole, what words should be ********, or what words should not used at all?

As someone mentioned, a thread has been blocked on more than one occasion, not often, and not always because of provanities!

I for one am glad that Cathe has given us the "Adult" freedom to discuss what we wish, and the freedom to rant and rave if necessary.

It would be a very sad day, if the Open Discussion forum became soooooo censured, that everyone felt like they were walking on egg shells everytime they opened their mouths.

I mean absolutly NO disraspect to you Carolyn Jane because you have a absolute right to a opinion as I do, but I personally disagree 100% to any forum having so many rules about what you can say, can not say, that I just wouldnt bother joining

Marion

:)

There you go, one of the first words I used as a whole was ******** by the mediator on this forum - so I wont use that word again (fair enough)

They oviously have there own censorship in control, we dont need to make our own

Oh man! Talk about bad boards? When I was pregnant, I used to go on babycenter.com. They have baby name polls, where a pregnant couple gives their top choices for baby names and the "users" vote on them. People are absolutely brutal! They tear names apart that #1) mean something to the couple who are asking for helpful advice; #2) are given names to other people who are coming to the site. Heaven forbid you want to name your daughter Mackenzie - OH! because that's a BOYS name, or a Scottish last name. Or if you want to put a twist on the way something is spelled.

Sorry, that was a huge pet peeve of mine.

Personally, I was beginning to think they had the hots for each other, the way they bickered & taunted each other in many of their posts. LOL

I respectfully disagree with Carolynjane and would not like to see people banned from this site just because of the use of language. I cherish the openness of these forums and think they are just perfect the way they are.

That's my vote.

Edited to remove my comment...sorry. I decided on second thought to take the higher ground and ignore the post that infuriated me. :)

Babycenter.com can be brutal!! Now bear in mind, this was six years ago, but when I was pregnant I would visit the site quite often. I would feel so sorry for the mom who was considering bottle vs. breast feeding, b/c she would be ripped apart for her decision!! That was a very hot topic, folks were just WAY over the top on that one.
