i cannot decide whether to order a pair. is 20pds big enough for a platemate to attach too?

laura

I am considering getting a pair myself. I see no reason why they wouldn't fit on 20# DB's. I keep shying away from them because they are very expensive for what they are...seems like a rip-off. x(

20-lb dumbbells are fine for Platemates. In fact, they would also fit onto 15-lb'ers as well, not to mention heavier dumbbells.

I personally think Platemates are an excellent value; I have sets that increase each dumbbell's weightload by 2.5 lbs, and sets that increase each dumbbell's weightload by 1.25 lbs. For those who want to build strength slowly, safely and incrementally, Platemates are the best route. With the help of Platemates I have been able to build up to dumbbell weightloads of 26.5 lbs per dumbbell for my upper body work; I could never have done that trying to vault from 15 to 20 lbs, or 20 to 25 pounds.

do u know if they are only available online? the shipping is expensive
where did u buy yours?

laura

Hi, Laura - I did buy mine online; however, it was so many years ago I can't remember which vendor. I'm not sure what fitness equipment brick-and-mortar stores are in your area, but it's worth opening the Yellow Pages and making some calls.

I think platemates are a great value... its often CHALLENGING if not impossible to jump the typical 5# increments that higher DB wts jump... Platemates DO NOT WORK on the rubberized weights tho-

I also got online but cant recall where... a web search will produce results... ALSO- I just got at Academy... Adjustable weights (like dial a weights) that go from 6,9,12,15,18,21,24#s called Sport Block. They were regularly 49.99 (set) but on sale for 39.99.

I was needing something for the 20-25 in betweens so it was perfect.

Althouh I orginally balked at the price of the platemates - they ARE a bit on the pricey side (unneccesarily in my opinion) - I found I use them all the time, so in effect, they have paid for themselves.

I use my platemates all the time too. They are very worth it. I bought mine at Play It Again Sports.

I love my platemates! I bought them at a sporting goods store about 8 years ago, I think. They work on any size dumbbell.

A caveat: Platemates will attach to hex weights that are 12# and above, but if you have vinyl coated weights or neoprene-coated weights, they will not hold well.

I picked some up at a weight-training equipment store, and some others online (don't remember where).

You can get them at:

>i cannot decide whether to order a pair.

Don't forget: if you're doing exercises with two dumbells, you will need 2 pairs of platemates.

I just wanted to add that the platemates DO INDEED attach to smaller/lighter weights AND vinyl-covered dumbbells. I use mine for PUB quite often, and I've attached them to my 5 lb vinyl-covered db's for the middle-range weight of PUB....so I've been able to use them on EVERY single db I own.

Question, if I am using two dumbells, wouldn't I only need one pair of plates... one for each dumbell? Is each plate 1.25 lbs.? above poster said to have two sets for two dumbells. I want to order them but just want to be sure! Thanks for anyone who could clarify!!

BTW, thanks for the above link. They are only 19.95 at FWonline, although I haven't seen the shipping yet. But that sounds good to me and these things are perfect for increasing my weight load!

You can use just one plate per dumbell, you just have to adjust your grip so they stay balanced in your hand.

Also, I purchased a pair of each size - the little hex plate comes in at 1.25 pounds and the smallest doughnut sized one (perfect for tacking 5 lbs onto your barbell (also larger dumbells) weighs in at 2.5 pounds each.

I bought two sets of each size platemate, but this gives you the flexibility of adding just one platemate to each dumbell for when you need to make the increment small. I have never had any difficulty lifting dumbells with just one platemate on it, believe me the "balancing" issue is just not all that great an issue. Easy as pie.

Gee, I didn't mean to make it sounds sound formidable! Apologies! I only meant that the dumbell is a little heavier on one end when you hold it and you might need to shift it a little in your hand when you grip it.
