Plantar Fascitis and Shoe Rec....

Although I don't think I have PF, and if I do it's a mild case, I was wondering what workout shoes would be best to limit my foot aches/pains from getting worse. I do have some inserts I wear in some of my shoes, but I end up getting blisters b/c I dont have enough space left. I dont have any other foot issues as far as wide feet etc.

Thanks!

Any workout shoe with good support. I have PF and use Ryka Enlight. I know a lot of forum members use Enlight II and the Engage. Try on shoes with inserts, you may need to go up a bit in size. I also tape my foot. That works wonders.

Stacy, you need to go to a specialty shoe store and have them fit you with shoes that are right for you. It sounds like your shoes are too small if the inserts give you blisters. Workout/running shoes should be a size to a size and a half (sometimes even two) bigger than your normal shoe size.

I have recently been diagnosed with PF myself. Another tip... don't go barefoot, ever. Find a good pair of birkenstocks to wear around the house.

STRETCH your foot whenever you can.

If you are a member at FYY, there is an excellent thread about PF on the first page of the Fitness FAQ Forum. LOTS of good links and information.

Good luck!

Stacy, the things that have helped me are:

--not going barefoot, as noted by others
--getting a pair of Dansko professional clogs, which I wear around the house
--religiously stretching my calves after every workout.
--Spenco Polysorb cross trainer insoles (Amazon.com carries them, as do a lot of shoe repair stores) inside my Rykas when I work out.

Hope this helps!

I had PF last spring and it's nothing to ignore! I went to a foot doc and got orthotics that helped tons. Be religious about stretching, don't go barefoot and ice it daily. With time, it gets better but it can take a while. And don't skimp on cheap shoes!

Stacy,
All great advice above, but regarding stretching religiously: since PF is usually worse in the morning (b/c you've been off your feet for so long) be sure to stretch BEFORE getting out of bed (or if you've been off your feet for a long time watching a movie or whatever). I used to keep a towel by my bed to stretch my calves and feet before getting out of bed, yes even in the middle of the night, and found that when I was consistent with this practice not only did I have less pain first thing in the morning, but I also healed more quickly. In fact I would usually go right from stretching my foot to putting on a shoe, and then getting out of bed.

Good luck,
Mattea

Hi,

I agree with the advice above. Brikenstocks have really helped me and to this day, I don't go barefoot. I also only wear New Balance running and cross trainers. I haven't had any problems in several years. I wore Rykas & Nike's for a long time and I'm not so sure that they didn't contribute to the problem, but everyone's foot is different.

My husband had tried EVERYTHING -stretching, boots to help stretching, shoes. His only relief came from a pair of CROCS. You can't wear them to workout in, but I wear them constantly when I'm not and notice an immediate difference when I don't. The results were just remarkable! They are not expensive.

Wow, I'm amazed that Crocs helped. They kill my feet since they have no arch support!! I tried wearing them last summer since they are so easy and waterproof to boot, but my PF, which had been gone for a year, flaired back up. Luckily my older daughter wears the same shoe size, so they didn't go to waste! I was back in my Danskos lickety-split! I have found that the only waterproof shoes that my feet can even begin to tolerate are the Teva sports sandle. They have some arch support, which I find really helps.
For working out, I use New Balance cross trainers with my orthodics for step and kickboxing and I wear Asics with my orthodics for running.
It's interesting how different we all are:) :)

My Dh has the same problem. Currently, he wears black Z-coil sneakers and shoes (http://www.zcoil.com/index.html). They are scarey looking, but he was in so much pain that he said it didn't matter. Personally, I think they are quite comfortable, but he says they bother his feet now and then so he doesn't wear them all the time.

Although the pain has diminished, we can't honestly say it is a direct result of wearing the Z-coils. At the same time they were purchased, he began doing the stretching exercises we found in the Dallas Morning News:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon..._heel_0102liv.ART.State.Edition1.3e180ce.html

He says he believes the exercises are helping him more than anything else.

If anyone cannot log into the Dallas Morning News....drop me an e-mail and I will be happy to list the exercises. :)

HTH,

I got PF a few years ago, and I just have to manage it always. Sometimes it doesn't bother me, but if I wear any cheap shoes that offer little support -it flares up. If I run too far -it flares up. It's such a bummer, the only shoes I can wear are sneakers and danskos. When I get a pair of sneakers I go to the store and try on almost every pair they have, I walk around in them, jump up and down, until I find a pair that seem like they've got good support. Just try to see how much support they have. And, stretch a lot!
