Pentagenerians & Beyond: W/B 5/30

Today I did original Pyramid Lower Body, up only premix. That was 47 minutes and 174 calories burned. Average heart rate was 108 and maximum heart rate was 145. The floor work with the stability ball always gets me in this workout. I was happy to see that Cathe was able to do a Live class with modifications. Her recovery is apparently going well.

Valerie, great hike yesterday. You don’t need to eliminate foods to use the Michael Symon book. The elimination is for someone who is trying to work on a specific problem such as a food allergy.

Diane Sue, the workout with music from The Pointer Sisters sounds like fun. I love their music and it’s great for dancing.

Waving hello to Judy, Cathy, and Deb.

I hesitate because the last several books I bought, I never use. I've gotten into grabbing something online and making whatever it is that appeals at the moment. then I keep the recipe or not. I hardly ever use the books I have. I do use the sizable recipe file I've saved up over years. this is the first book in a while that sounded interesting but I'm on the fence yet .

we rode this morning, 1 hr 20 min on the local bike trail. very quiet, we were very early. appts all this afternoon.

Pointer sisters were so good!. their music made you want to jump up and dance, even though I cant!

Valerie, I can understand your hesitation about buying another cookbook. You can probably find new vegetable recipes online. I love cookbooks and I have quite a collection! I’ve been collecting them all of my married life. I like to collect regional cookbooks from the various places that we lived.

Sicilian Spaghetti Cake (Pasticcio di Spaghetti alla Siracusana) Recipe | EatingWell

this is an old recipe from eating well but one of our favorites. it works fine with whole wheat spaghetti. I use 2 giant bell peppers from costco, so red, orange or yellow. If I cant find whole tomatoes , and this year has been a problem, I use a can of diced tomatoes and drain them in a strainer. I follow it as written. I bake it in a cast iron pan and dont try to invert it from the pan, just cut in quarters and serve from the pan. i use asaigo or parm, usually dont have romano. the top gets sort of crispy in the oven. I love this recipe. I'll have to look and make sure the link works, as it looks different than I expected.

I got all my junk done today so reward is pasta for dinner.

oday I did the beginning of CDorner #172 full body cardio which was warm up and all of the cardio moves that would be used, then changed my mind when she started with squat press, 11 minutes, heart rate 112/151, 43 calories, 687 steps. I then did today's Full Body Strength workout she called Tone and Tan on her website. This was 53 minutes, heart rate 103/138, 136 calories, 517 steps. I experimented with the sets etc using strength training. It worked pretty well and counted reps close to what I counted I messed up pushing the buttons a few times so it gave me 22 sets instead of what I counted as 27. I pushed wrong and some of it measured as rests. Anyway, it always shows the full time and calorie burn etc..
I finished with CDorner Deep stretch 22 minutes, 32 calories, 32 steps, heart rate 78/98. Total time was 86 minutes, 211 calories, 1,236 steps.
Full Body Strength was 53 minutes using dumbbells and bands 3 rounds of 5 moves then 2 rounds of another group of 5 moves ending with a bonus of extra abs moves
round 1-3
move 1 heavy band (fabric purple) above knees 20# dbs squat(she changes the moves slightly each rnd and uses 25#) pulses first round slow squat 2nd rnd half squats 3rd
move 2 dead row 20# dbs wearing band
move 3 reverse lunge 20# dbs 3rd round option of kneeling on floor and back up into lunge 15# dbs
move 4 mini latex type loop band W pulls in boat pose rnd 2 knee pulls W pulls rnd 3 W pulls knee twist
move 5 squat/hammer curl 15# dbs me rnd 2 squat to lateral lunge hammer and rnd 3 side step squat hammer
rnd 4-5
move 1 plie squat /lateral raise ( I used 8# dbs)
move 2 soft band/skullcrusher 10# dbs leg raises
move 3 no weight double leg raise/crunch
move 4 bicycle crunch head elevated
move 5 side plank (I just did the leg raise crunch again)
Bonus
1 dumbbell 10# sit up twist
no weight abs move

Carolyn, I really liked the music in that CDorner workout. It was so much fun. Nice work on Pyramid lower body today. I had a huge amount of cookbooks in my collection and got rid of a few when we moved this time as I never pulled them out to use. It they aren't used, they are just taking up space for me. I kept ones that were special to me.

Valerie, I think you may have posted this workout before as I remember it having pasta and baked. I printed it out. I use Pinterest a lot for recipes and just save them on my pinterest. I delete the ones I don't like. I made a keto banana bread for my husband last night. I had pasta for dinner tonight as my husband ordered Dominoes pizza. He gets me the pasta primavera with all of the vegetables in. I know it has a lot of fat though as they put alfredo sauce in it. I have another pasta recipe that I want to try from the cookbook, but I thought I should finish some of what I already made. I have two of the recipes in the freezer. Can't do that with the salads though. I purchased for only 2.50 with a deal on Kindle so I didn't figure I had anything to lose in purchasing it. I have purchased books digitally and turned around and bought the actual paper book, like Practical Paleo before.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Pure Strength Legs & Abs. It’s going to be hot this weekend, in the 90’s and I’m sure Home Depot will be busy so I will get a lot of exercise there.

Valerie-That’s great that you got everything done yesterday. I need to make that salmon recipe again soon. That pasta recipe looks good. I think Chris would like it.

Carolyn-Great job with Ramped Up Upper Body and Pyramid Lower Body. That’s another older Cathe workout that I plan on doing again. I was really happy to see Cathe working out again too.

Diane Sue-Nice job with the CDorner workouts. The full body strength one sounds good.

Hi to Cathy & Deb

Haven't worked out yet today, but figured I should take the time to update from the last few. LOL Tuesday, I shopped and then in the afternoon did one lap through the local zoo as I had to pick Derek up. Wednesday we did the zoo in Grand Rapids, then spent the night at my parents, Thursday we did the zoo in South Bend and then came home. Yesterday I did Party Rockin' Step 2. I actually meant to grab 1 and after I started and realized it, I decided to keep going. I've only done 2 maybe twice. I prefer the more dancy step routines. I may adapt the Finished Step that I put together and add that one in somewhere, and I do really like the warm up in that one. I also appreciate the long stretch at the end. I wish she did longer stretches on all the workouts. The rest of yesterday I spent recovering the house from my 2 day absence. Nick is working really long days and DH was working and playing catch up with the yard as he had to get a new mower and between mowings it had all gotten quite tall. Nick had a fun day this week. He is a food lead and he ended up being the highest level food person at the zoo that day and in charge! So, what happens? It's the day the Health Inspector decides to show up and he had to go through both restaurants with them and the zoo CEO. Fortunately the inspector was a nice guy, some of them are real PITA's. He ended up working almost 11 hours that day.

I've never found a non-wheat pasta that I really like. Mainly because of the texture. Nick eats a lot of them, so there's always some around. Maybe I should give some another try. I've vowed to not buy more cookbooks, because I rarely ever use them and I certainly don't get my money's worth out of them. Anything the least bit complicated, and I consider a LOT of things complicated, I avoid. A lot of them are things I'm sure I'd like, but darn I've never managed to be able to afford my own chef.

Valerie I'm not good about sunscreen if I'm somewhere I know I'll be going in and out of the sun a lot, I did use it for summer baseball as I spent a lot of time just sitting in the sun. I was never good at the whole sunbathing thing when I was younger. I tried, but I just got so bored. I've had a couple small spots frozen with the spray stuff, but those were termed pre cancerous sun damage. Last year when I went in, I had a spot I was concerned about and he gave it some fancy name and said it wasn't an issue. I then asked him if that was just another name for old age spots at which he looked a tad uncomfortable and said yes. LOL

Hi to all! I'll try and get back after I do my workout!

I may well have posted this recipe before. since WW, I discovered I like whole wheat pasta. means way fewer WW points for me. I don't have pasta as often as I used to. this recipe always works for us because I love bell peppers. always have some in the fridge. the rest of the ingredients are also always in my pantry. I had a hectic day yesterday so this sounded great. to me this not complicated tho it pays to read thru it first since the process is a little different. I try to make 4 servings out of it, but DH indulged and there is not 2 servings left.
also had a small piece of garlic bread. weather got WAY cooler and so cranking up the oven was fine. this works with spaghetti or thin spaghetti, never tried it with any "chunkier" pasta. I tried several non wheat versions and was totally turned off by the flavor and texture even though I expected to like it. I didn't make it thinking it would be "yucky", but yucky it was. no way would I use it again.

two types of crusty patches show up from age/sun exposure. seborrheic keratoses and actinic keratoses. the seborrheic ones are not a big problem. actinic ones are pre cancerous. they are removed. also straight up skin cancers ( squamous cell, basal cell, melanoma,) that need to be removed, but deeper wider incision is made to remove those. most of us probably had decades of sun exposure before sunscreens worked at all so be diligent about those spots.
its an entire medical specialty so dermatology not simple. I am good about sunscreen these days and wear a hat or visor. women have the benefit of more hair since mens heads really take a hit from sun exposure over time.

Today I took a rest day. I did not feel like doing anything that I looked at, so I knew that I needed a break. I ran a couple of errands and now I need do some housework.

Valerie, I like thin whole wheat pasta best, but I use all of the shapes. Several years ago a found an article in Fine Cooking about appreciating whole wheat pasta by Maria Speck. She emphasizes the fact that it is not interchangeable and works best with bold flavors. There are several good recipes in the article. The recipe below is one of my favorites. She uses a very small amount of bacon which can be easily omitted since it’s more of a garnish. You use olive oil for sautéing the vegetables. It makes a great meatless dish.

Diane Sue, nice job with your workouts. I’ve gotten a couple of cookbooks on the Kindle, but if I really like it I want a hard copy.

Judy, great job with Pure Strength Legs and Abs. That’s one of the few Cathe workouts that I don’t have.

Cathy, it sounds like you had a nice two days with your family and zoo visits.

Have a wonderful afternoon everyone.

I did Bun Burners Barre an Ball today. I know I've done it at least once before, but I really didn't remember it. It's a good workout and we'll see how my glutes feel tomorrow. I had a plate full of tofu and veggies for lunch. DH will sometimes grumble when I do that about his wanting something like it, too, but a lot of the veggies I put in it he doesn't like, so I do it for lunches when we always do our own thing.

Valerie I will happily send you some of our heat as we are going up near 90 today, and we're going to be in the 80-90 range for at least the next week. I really don't want to know what July and August will throw at us.

Today I did CDorner #118 for 17 minutes, 86 calories, 1,824 steps heart rate 126/155. I like that one, but changed my mind and hunted for something else that I have not done. I then did CDorner #40, 58 minutes, heart rate 128/172, 245 calories, 4,961 steps. This was just so so, It said" great" music and it sounded like all latin type music. I did not recognize the songs. Total time was 75 minutes, 331 calories, 6,785 steps.

Judy, nice getting in the Pure Strength weight work. I bet you are busy this weekend at Home Depot and will burn a lot of calories.

Cathy, I enjoy Party Rock'n step 1 more too. I rarely do the other one. The chickpea pasta is the first that I have found that was not weird texture. I haven't tried the other brand I bought at Walmart yet, but it is all chickpea without anything else as well. It sounds like your family is really busy. My veggie dishes are for me only. I generally cook two different meals, or make mine a cold meal, like a salad. I just have never cared for tofu all that much. I have used lots of different recipes and just not found a hit I guess.

Valerie, I have messed up on recipes, not reading the instructions for the ingredients and pre ahead of time. Some recipes are just different. One of them I made out of that recipe book called for something in the instructions that was not on the ingredient list and the oil was divided up into different parts of the prep. I was glad I read it all. Oh, and it was a recipe like the one Carolyn posted where you saved back some of the cooking water from the pasta. Some of those small looking cancers require a much larger cut and more work to make sure they get it all. On the rare times I go to my daughter's office she checks my back and stuff making sure there is nothing else suspicious. The one along the crease of my nose started as a tiny spot that bled all of the time even when I was gentle with washing my face and that is when I had her check it out. The one on my back was much bigger and it was weird because I couldn't see it, but it itched like crazy and kept bothering me. I had to use a lot of antibiotic ointment after she cut it out. Not easy to do when it is the middle of the back.

Carolyn, that recipe looks good. I leave bacon out of a lot of the recipes that call for some in them. When I first started Paleo so many recipes through in bacon. I got sick of it pretty quick and always purchased the no sugar lean stuff, but still got where I didn't care for it much. A lot of the digital cookbooks are harder to maneuver through indexes and back to recipes and info pages than the actual cookbooks. But, when unsure the Kindle can be a lot cheaper if I end up not liking the cookbook.
