Pentagenarians & Beyond: Week Beginning 8/5

Valerie, I have some pages I finally tore out of magazines that were favorite recipes that are still around. I used to get clean eating magazine all of the time and have purchased Paleo Magazine. It is too complicated keeping them all and trying to remember which one had which recipe.

Carolyn, I have an app that came with my Samsung tablet that I have started typing some recipes into. I have a journal called recipes. I can add pictures. I can use the stylus. Do you have a special recipe app? My problem is what I am doing doesn't have a way to categorize the recipes that I know of.

Diane Sue, the app that I use is called Paprika. I’m sure that it’s also available for android devices. I have had it for several years. Great workout today.

diane sue I bought a whole box of the plastic sleeves at Costco. they work fine for a page from a magazine or if printed off a web site. I put them (loose) into different color hanging folders in very general categories, like vegetarian main dish, desserts, fish, bread/muffins. I end up with about 12 folders. easy to find things as long as I file it in the right place. easy to add new things or toss old things. pages from books work too. also easy to edit the recipes themselves by writing on them. I like electronics but plain old pen and paper is much easier for cooking IMO. I store the folders in a cardboard banker box with a lid so it can get tidy m or stowed in two seconds. I resist the temptation to stack things in a pile because it is hard to go through, things get lost. I do NOT want to type out recipes that are already printed.

Carolyn, thanks I will check it out.

Valerie, that does sound like a good idea, except I really don't have a place downstairs for the file holder. Someday if we ever get to add the new kitchen cabinets that we want to and some extras, I may have someplace to put something. I look at package sizes and do not buy tall large things because they do not it anywhere. I don't have room to throw them on top of the refrigerator either. That is where my spiralizer and extra discs for my Cuisinart food processor is. I would like to get my spice collection out of my lower cabinets. My youngest grandson likes to organize them. I have them in baskets of baked good spices, small jar spices, savory spices , and one I keep in front that is the most used spices. It is a pain digging them out when I want something and bad when he moves them around. I keep looking at those small magnetic spice holders that can hang on a magnetic back plate or refrigerator. My only problem is, most of them are kind of small and I don't think a large bottle of spice will fit inside one. I don't want a big spice rack sitting on the counter top. No room.

Hi Everyone,

I need to catch up on posting. Tuesday I did Build & Burn Upper Body Super Sets + KCM Raw Upper Body Finisher. That was a good combination. I really like the Raw finishers. Wednesday I did Build & Burn Lower Body Tabata then Barlates 100 Rep Squat-Kick Challenge and I finished with Core Max workout 3 (the one with both the stability ball and the medicine ball). Yesterday I did Afterburn, Express Premix (32 minutes) and Build & Burn, Trim & Tone Dumbbells only Premix. That was my first time with Afterburn and I really liked it. I want to try the full workout soon. Today Chris is off work and we have some things to get done. I will try to fit a workout in this afternoon.

Lori-That was a beautiful tribute to Madeline. She was an incredible person.

Diane Sue- Great job with the Live and Raw workouts this week!
I have a couple of cooking apps on my iPad, Jessica Gavin's App and Caveman Feast.

Valerie-Homegrown green beans are so good! My father grew them in his garden and we had them often when I was growing up.

Carolyn-Great job with High Step Challenge and 4DS Kickboxing! I love Cathe's High Step workouts.

Deb-Hope you are having a good trip!

Judy

Judy, great workout choices this week. I was going to do Kellys Raw cardio finisher yesterday, but forgot that it starts with snatches and Kelly uses 20# . My shoulders were so sore that I changed my mind. Last time I did that one I used 15#. I do like it though.
I have the Caveman Feast app on my tablet and ipad.

Judy when I was a kid my grandmother always grew yellow wax beans. I think the green ones are much better . These are bush beans. I don’t like pole beans as much. Even a few bean plants are enough for two people . I plant seeds in succession since the seeds are good for a year. the first beans are the best. They keep putting out beans if you pick them daily. if it gets hot, they get tough. A fun easy plant to grow.
Duane sue this is not a whole file cabinet but a plastic/cardboard box with edge rails inside so the pendaflex files hang and slide. the box is about 13"x18" by 12 inches high. I have a plastic and a cardboard one at other house. Got at office supply store. I tried ring binders first but the box works better. I got tired of spending time looking thru piles of paper and misplacing them. if we have guests, I put the lid on and stash it in a corner.

This morning I did 4 Day Split Higher Intensity Step plus Chest and Back. Step was 29 minutes with 214 calories burned. My average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate was 154. The Chest and Back segment was 39 minutes and 119 calories burned. Average heart rate was 103 and maximum heart rate was 126.

Judy, nice job with your workouts this week. I’m enjoying the older workouts this week.

Diane Sue, the Paprika app has many features that I don’t use. I have added some of my older recipes from magazines to it for convenience. I still have my binders and many cookbooks that I love to browse through when I’m looking for something different.

Valerie, my family always planted green beans and we ate them often. I don’t care for pole beans either. They don’t taste the same to me. Our yard doesn’t have a good sunny space for a garden unless I use a planter of some sort. I only have herbs in pots now. I gave up on tomatoes because the squirrels would get most of them before we did.

Hello to Lori and Deb.

This morning I did Cathe Live Cardio Fusion , 41 minutes, hert rate average 143, max 178, met 6.1, 276 calories, 3,913 steps. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Cardio Crush, 32 minutes, heart rate average 134, max 161, met 5.9, 208 calories, 1,784 steps. I finished off with a Sarah Beth Yoga, 15 minutes, 33 calories. Total time 88 minutes, 517 calories.

Valerie, that is what I am picturing with the box and files. I suppose I could sit it on the floor and like you do, put it up when company comes. I have 3 binders with recipes. One I had started almost 20 years ago when I was putting together my own recipes and my husband kept insisting I write a healthy cookbook. Now, I buy all of these healthy cookbooks and nutrition books and he says "see I told you". I just gave up putting more in the binders. One is desserts and one is meals. Then the healthier variety one.
My grandmother used to mix green beans and yellow wax beans and can them. I never cared for the yellow ones.

Carolyn, nice work with 4 Day Split. I used to keep the all recipes app , but recently deleted it. It go complicated and then wouldn't load anymore. My yard has huge oak trees behind the fence that keep it pretty shaded most of the time. It also harbors lots of squirrels. When I had a patio I used to grow some herbs and lavender plants in containers along with handing strawberries.

I keep the box on the dining room table, and stow it when we have guests. it replaced some repurposed ring binders that were falling apart, and this overall works better for me. I think the yellow color of wax beans is off putting to begin with. they look seriously over cooked to start with, and green ones taste better.

we had an impromptu dinner guest last night. It was a nice evening of conversation but no workout. today is not happening soon either. so tired of the hot stinky air. sad to realize this is what summer is like in the west these days.
.

This morning I did JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster workout from the 30 Day Plan. That was a quick 218 calories burned. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 155. I had my investment club meeting today which was nice. One of the ladies has been going through some serious health problems for the last six months, but she is much better. We had a productive meeting and a great social time afterwards. It’s hard to believe that we have been doing this for 18 years.

Hello to all and have a great day.

http://www.eatingwell.com/recipe/248716/sweet-tangy-watermelon-salad/

I want to share this recipe. I've made this salad for years. so tasty and works even if the watermelon is not very sweet, which seems to be the case for most small personal size watermelons. It seems an unlikely combination but it is really good. the only negative is most of the dressing does not "absorb" and it leaves a puddle on your plate. I serve it in small individual bowls. it works fine without the cilantro. the sugar doesn't dissolve quickly in the seasoned rice wine vinegar but it' s Ok anyway.

finally a cool and slightly rainy day. so nice for a change.

Today I did Caffey Fit Raw Strong and Lean 48 minutes(45 actual) met 5.0 265 calories, 1,733 steps, heart rate 110 average, max 162. I loved this one. I then did Cathe Live Fit Tower Light total body from her last workout, 53 minutes, heart rate 96 average, 126 max, 766 steps, 222 calories, met 3.8. This used body weight for lower body and 3,5,and 8# dbs for upper. 487 total calories 1hr and 41 minutes.
Coffey Fit Raw Strong and Lean
Kelly uses a 33# barbell for most of it, 10# dumbbells, and a 20# kettlebell for kettlebells swings and figure 8's
warm up about 6.5 minutes
cardio punches/squat hops, then just punches front, up, low and all 3
barbell squats 45# my weight 10 reps
kettlebell 20# 20 reps double hand swings
cardio skate hop side to side ending in just hop side to side
biceps curls 45# barbell my weight 10 reps
kettlebell single arm swings 10 and 10 reps 20#
cardio shuffle then mountain climbers hands on barbell
deadlift Kelly used barbell I used two 30# dumbbells 10 reps
kettlebell swings alternating 10 reps 20#
cardio cardio insole slaps/butt kicker jog then just butt kicker jog
clean from the hip I lowered the bar to 35# here 10 reps
figure 8 kettlebell swings 20 reps 20#
cardio wood chop center and side to side then just center with jumps
Thrusters 35# barbell 10 reps
double swing kettlebell 20# 20 reps
cardio punches with a tuck jump
barbell bentover rows 45# barbell
alternating kettlebell swings 20 reps
cardio lateral step shoot ending with 8 reps of just shoot
dumbbell kickbacks I used 8# dbs 10 reps
kettlebell double hand swings 20# 20 reps/ alternating swings 20# 20 reps/ figure 8 20# 20 reps
cardio punch and skater , butt kicker jog, step side shoot
deadlift high pull 35# barbell 10 reps/clean from the hip push press 35# barbell 10 reps
abs and glutes
feet on barbell bridge 20 reps and then 20 pulses
feet under the bar sit ups 20
bench press 20 reps wide, then 20 reps close grip 35# barbell
I think I could have gone heavier with some of this and either need to have two barbells set up or use some dumbbells. Kelly says you can use either. The impact is not to high and the cardio is short.

Valerie, thanks for sharing that recipe. I love salads :)

Carolyn, nice work. That is a long time meeting with your friends for the investment club meetings. Glad the lady that was having health issues is better.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Build & Burn Kickbox KB Fusion, then X10 Fat Burning Circuit and I finished wtih XTrain 100 Rep Challenge Triceps. Today I did XTrain All Out Low Impact, Floor & Step Only and the Bicep & Scarecrows 100 Rep Challenges.

Valerie- I agree that the green beans are better than the yellow wax beans. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I love watermelon so I will probably try it soon.

Diane Sue- Raw Strong and Lean looks like a good one. Great job!

Carolyn-Great workout! I'm glad that the lady in your investment club is doing better.

Hi to Lori & Deb!

Judy

Judy, I really did enjoy the Kelly workout. I have been typing them all up so next time I do them things will go more smoothly and I know where to adjust weights. Now the Fit Tower workout reminded me of some of the Tracey Anderson gazillion reps workouts that leaves the muscles screaming. I wasn't into it that much today. I think I like the ones I got with the Fit Tower better. I did enjoy the Total Body weight live one. I kept feeling like my standing leg was getting more work and turned at an uncomfortable position while doing the lateral work with the knee bent forward and back. I had to pause and move my foot around. I think my body mechanics doesn't like that move much. I am better with hydrants kneeling. I admire those women that are participating in the live workouts and keeping up so well with Cathe and even the weights Cathe is using.
Nice work with using the X train 100 rep challenges :)

Valerie, do you add sugar to that salad? I would think it would not really need any.

I add less than it says but I add about a teaspoon to the seasoned rice vinegar. most of the dressing doesn't stick to the salad, it ends up in the bowl but it seems to need some added. seasoned rice vinegar already has salt and sugar but it needs a little more. the salad ends up tangy and not too sweet IMO. some depends somewhat on if you are lucky to get a good watermelon. I just had a melon that was flavorless, and the dressing made it OK to use. I don't use a lot of sugar overall, and to me this is worth a teaspoon. I did not try honey or agave. make the salad and eat it, it does not keep well.

I did total body metabolic today and used decent weight for the whole thing. did not seem to bother my shoulder.

Hi Everyone,
We are painting the bedroom today. We wanted to get that done before we get the new carpet installed. In the photo the old color is the lighter green on the right. The new color is sage green.

Diane Sue-It's a great idea to write up the Raw workouts so you know what to expect the next time. I always like to know what moves are coming up in workouts and I like to have weights and equipment ready. I need to do more of the Fit Tower workouts. I like the workouts that came with it.

Valerie-Great workout! It's good that it didn't bother your shoulder.

Hi to Deb, Lori & Carolyn!

Judy
