Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/2

Hi Everyone,

We had a very nice weekend. It was so good to visit with family. We will be going back again for Thanksgiving. I had 4 rest days, Friday through Monday. I really felt like getting back at it so I started a new rotation yesterday. I'm going to do an XTrain + 2013 workouts rotation this month. Yesterday I did Tabatasize, tabatas 1-5 then Burn Sets Back. That was the first time I've done all 5 tabatas and it was quite challenging. Today I did XTrain Ride. I did it more as an aerobic ride, not all out.

Deb-That ride sounds so nice! I bet Kylee loved it! Great job with the Live Upper Body workout. I have that one on my to-do list.

Diane Sue-I've been pretty lucky with both Fedex and UPS. The only ones I've had trouble with are some of the newer companies that have people delivering from their own cars. Lasership is one that Chewy.com has been using. One time they left us the wrong package and another time the person drove their car up onto our lawn, I have no idea what they were thinking. I did report both to Chewy.com and the last order I placed with them, they were back to using Fedex, at least for us.

Carolyn-I looked at the September rotation and it looks like a really good one. If I hadn't already decided on XTrain I might have done it. I saved it and am thinking I may do it next month.

Valerie-Great job with the rides! I hate to say that we haven't been outside to ride once this summer. Chris has been so busy with work and he got so obsessed with remodeling that he hasn't had the time or interest in biking. If I'm riding by myself, I'll just do an indoor ride. I think this is the first year we won't have done any outdoor riding. Maybe we can get some rides in this fall.

Lori-with all the hours you have been working, it's great that you are keeping up with your workouts. I hope you get a break soon. I also love salmon. I had it for dinner when we went out to eat over the weekend. I try to have it once a week or so. I previewed Jessica's new "Feel Good Fusion" DVD. In this she is by herself and it reminds me more of her Youtube workouts, rather than her Walk Strong workouts. I think it will work really well for active rest or easier days. The new stretch DVD is excellent, as usual. I love Jessica's stretch DVDs. They are very relaxing.

Have a great night!

Judy

Judy, that is great that you had a nice visit with your family. I always feel like I accomplished a tough workout when I do all of Tabatasize. Nice work ! I wouldn't think any delivery service would be so disrespectful as to drive up on someone's lawn. That is crazy.

Good morning,

Only PT exercises yesterday.

Valerie, I would report any driver that you feel is not doing the best job. They are serious about that kind of stuff. Good for you for defrosting the freezer. We have a small one in the basement that needs to be defrosted....not a job I like at all. Agree, one good thing that comes out of it is getting rid of stuff that has been there too long.

Carolyn, good job on doing the workout after your WW meeting. I seem to remember that like a lot of us, once we are out of the house, it is very difficult to come back and do a workout. I must have the only FedEx guy that rings the doorbell once he drops off a box on the porch.

Diane Sue, we have an on line neighborhood watch program, and they are always reporting packages being stolen off porches. Some even upload the video from their security cameras that show the person doing it. How stupid can they be? They must know there are cameras there, but still go up to the door and steal the package. Not that I think the police are doing very much about it.

Judy, that is great that you had a chance to visit with family, and took the opportunity to get some rest days in. I have recently heard that some companies ( I think Amazon was toying with the idea) are starting to use individuals with their own cars to deliver packages. Kind of like how Uber started. I would think it is a mistake, for the exact things you mentioned happened to you. I hope Chewys sticks with the know delivery companies. I am one of those "hold outs" here that have never used an Uber ride. They just scare me. John read somewhere that in a certain area, 10% of their drivers were convicted felons. I am all for giving someone a second chance, etc especially if their crime was not drug or violence related, but it still scares me to get into one of those cars.

Lori, I hope things slow down for you, is the conference over yet?

Take care,

Today I did Pyramid Upper Body, upper only premix. My time was 53 minutes with 182 calories burned. My average heart rate was 103 and maximum heart rate was 136.

I don’t like the idea of individuals delivering my packages using their own vehicles. There are too many possible problems in that situation. Yes, the Uber model seems to be spreading.

Judy, I’m glad that you had a nice visit with your family. I almost never get a workout done when I am with my family. My brother has a lot of equipment, but it’s hard to work around the activities and the constant flow of people.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Diane sue I know what spots you mean on chicken breasts. I usually get Costco bl/sl breasts. they are big and thick on one end. the spot the wing attaches ( I assume that's what it is) is always hard and tendon-y. I use a kitchen scissors to trim it off, then pound the breasts flatter, or cut them in half widthwise. IMO a scissors works way better than a knife. No way to cook evenly if you don't do something. evolution in action breasts are WAY bigger than they used to be. I save most turkey for holiday dinners. it is stronger than chicken and OK for me a couple times a year. I buy plain, separate turkey breast. easier to cook and no problem with dark meat left overs.

I ended up defrosting the freezer 2x last year. door didn't seal once. an inch of loose frost on everything. did not make that mistake again. the corner of a towel slipped into the top of the door seal. it looked and sounded shut but it was not.
welcome back Judy. good to hear you had a pleasant trip. Hope you get a chance for some outdoor rides. so much nicer than indoor.

I have not used Uber. I am uncomfortable about drivers properly vetted. I would not want to drive for uber either. seems like you would not be able to check out passengers either and being a cabbie was always risky.

so far most of our deliveries have been in "official" trucks. around the holidays things get a lot looser. our community is gated now and it is more difficult to get in if you don't have a passcode.
porch bandits and mail thieves are busy here too. we have had a locking mail box for years. it is big enough for small packages. since gating our entrance, the petty theft has settled down. not entirely gone but better than it was. last incident someone drove thru and crowbarred dozens of mail boxes. vandalism, don't think it was attempted theft. still had to replace the box, was not fixable.

Today was cardio. I did Cathe Live Jabs and Kicks, 55 minutes, average heart rate 137, max 166, 354 calories, met 5.9, 4,736 steps. I then did Kelly Coffey Lean Body Circuits boxing premix 20 minutes, heart rate average 143, max 171, met 6.1, 135 calories, 1,768 steps. I finished off with a Jessica Smith Youtube stretch 18 minutes, 30 calories. Total time was 93 minutes, 519 calories. I used 1# gloves for jabs and abs and my boxing gloves for the heavy bag tabatas. I wore 1.5# gloves for Lean Body Circuits boxing. This was 6,504 steps for the two cardio workouts.

Deb, my cell phone updated with an Uber App in the mix. I immediately deleted it. I prefer well known delivery companies myself. You would think by now the thieves would avoid going where there are cameras. Many people around here are getting them and security systems. I guess they feel lucky because so far they have gotten away with it. They boldly go in stores and steal stuff right in front of cameras. I couldn't believe the guy that went into Target with a key to the locked expensive item cabinet and stole stuff. His face was on the news and would be easy to identify.

Carolyn, the idea of using their own vehicles does not seem like a good plan anyway. Look at the wear and tear on their vehicles and I bet they are not paid that well. I have kind of wondered what all of these grocery deliveries use to deliver. I see Sprouts does delivery now.

Valerie, I hadn't thought about it being where the wing was attached. I split those chicken breasts if I am grilling for family because they are huge. I kept wondering why and read somewhere that it was the variety of chicken that they use. I kept thinking they were on steroids or something. They seemed way bigger that chicken breasts in the past. I will remember that on the part where the wing is attached next time I trim them.

Diane sue, I'm no expert on chicken anatomy, but if you look at a chicken, the wing must connect firmly to the breast somewhere. these are giant breasted chickens that seem like they would fall over forward. I remember chickens being cut up differently in the past, but those were always whole chickens, before you could buy just the parts you actually want.

I wonder about the future of grocery delivery. grocery stores run on such a small margin, I wonder if they can do it free and still stay in business. or will they disappear like phone booths, and food will be delivered from big warehouses. when I think it sounds crazy , I look at what has happened to retail and shopping malls in the last few years. I buy things online I did not imagine myself ever doing. not hard to picture people ordering food online routinely like they now order everything else. except for refrigerated and frozen items. not sure how that works. there are not enough police or time to track down low level theft, so thieves know they will likely get away with it at least short term.

Hi all! Just jumping on to say Hello!! I leave in the morning. I can’t wait for this to be over. The plan was to leave the office at 3pm. I left at 6pm!!!! Ugh.

I am not bringing workout stuff. Every year I do and I never get to it. When I do have the time I am usually too exausted. I am ok with no official workout. All the running around we do is insane.

Diane Sue...wanted to mention my husband bought an Insta Pot. It arrives tomorrow. Is is very excited about it. I think you have one?

I will read post when I come back...need to pack.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Hi Everyone,

Today I did Great Glutes, No Disc premix, then the upper body 100 rep challenges from XTrain.
Chris's uncle had a mild stroke Tuesday afternoon. We found out last night. This is the family that we were visiting over labor day. He is in the hospital and will be going to rehab in a few days.

Deb-I've never used Uber for a ride and I don't think I ever would. I'm with Valerie, I don't think the drivers are properly vetted.

Diane Sue-Thanks! Tabatasize might be the toughest Cathe cardio workout that I've done so far. I haven't done all of X10, so that may be tougher.

Carolyn-Nice job with Pyramid Upper Body. I rarely workout when we visit family. It's just hard to try to fit everything in. I'm also not happy with people delivering my packages in their own vehicles. I hope this is not a trend. I much prefer UPS, Fedex and USPS for delivering packages.

Valerie-I'm going to try to plan a few outdoor rides for this month and next. It's still nice out and I would hate to not get any outdoor rides in this year.

Lori-I hope things ease up for you soon. Good luck with the conference!

Judy

Valerie, what you think about the wings makes sense. I have noticed some pieces will be okay and others are awful and that is probably due to my splitting the breasts up into smaller pieces. I see more and more online grocery shopping sites. One's that are meats, fish, and poultry only. Then there are those like Thrive Market. They ship groceries as a membership market. Much like I used to buy my stuff from Melaleuca. I got my cleaners, skin care, supplements, oils etc. from them. There was yearly membership and I had to purchase at least 60 dollars a month to keep my preferred membership which is a lower rate. The thing is I purchased so many of the concentrated cleaners that even though I quit using them 3 years ago, I am still using several of the cleaners. I won't do that again. Amazon has their Prime Pantry for shopping with a membership fee. I have looked at it , but I don't like the paying a fee every month and having to spend a particular amount of money to get the free shipping. What if I don't want to buy anything, I am out money. I suppose with so many households with families and lots of activities, the shopping online and deliveries is nice. My older daughter does what I did, since she remembers it being a special time. She takes one child each week shopping and they make it a day of lunch out, they get to pick out something special they want and enjoy it. It was one on one time with each of my three children. We could chat, have lunch, get frozen yogurt :) I like to pick out what I want myself. I like to run out every few days and pick up fresh greens, veggies, and fruits as I need them. Not purchase expecting them to taste good by the end of the week.

Lori, hopefully things run smoothly for you. I am sure you get plenty of work out and really do not need workouts anyway. I love my Instant Pot. I am learning how to use it for my own recipes. Today I made my chicken pot pie recipe using it. I put the frozen chicken breasts (small ones) on the rack and bone broth in the bottom of the pot and pressure cooked them 8 minutes, took them out and shredded them and strained the broth and set it aside, then added the butter, sauted the veggies, added back in the broth and the rest of the pouch of bone broth and set it to finish cooking the soup for 18 minutes. Then I left it warming and added in the chicken and I used coconut milk as it said cream or coconut milk. It worked great. I quick released the steam to take out the chicken. I have downloaded several Instant Pot cookbooks. It helps give me some guidelines on using the instant pot. I made coconut milk yogurt with the yogurt feature, tried the boiled eggs in it, lots of different recipes. I bought a small spring form pan and have made cheesecake in it. Not that I need cheesecake ;)

Judy, that is sad for Chris's uncle. I hope he does well with the rehab. I have done all of X 10 several times. That might be harder. Tabatasize always felt like it got somewhat easier by the third tabata for me. Maybe I was just well warmed up for it by then. X 10 has all of those intense strength cardio portions added to it.

Good morning,

Only PT exercises yesterday. Today I am babysitting for my godchild's little boy while his father goes for his chemo treatment.

Carolyn, good job on the Pyramid workout! I am the same if there are people around, a workout would take 2nd if not 3rd place in priorities. :)

Valerie, funny how different peoples tastes are. We buy 2 turkeys for Thanksgiving, mostly because how the people like to take leftovers home. There is hardly any dark meat left to take home. I am very uncomfortable with Uber.

Diane Sue, good job on that Cathe Live workout! I think a lot of the reason chickens are so much bigger is how they are raised now, and what hormones etc. they give them. If they are fattened, and never allowed to roam around, it makes sense that they are getting bigger.

Lori, have a safe trip. I am sure all will go well with the conference. You are so organized! Agree, no workout stuff needed, you run around so much for it, you should be resting during your down time, with the little you probably get.

Judy, oh, so sorry to hear about Chris's uncle. I hope he is doing well and the rehab helps.

Take care,

Deb, I often buy the Harvest land chicken breast that are individually wrapped that are no antibiotics etc. Just for that reason. I am not so against the use of antiotics if needed. It would be hard to keep the animals healthy all of the time and extremely costly to farmers. It is the idea of them being excessively used and also I worry about what they are fed.so many plant based feeds have pesticides and are GMO so there is that. I am wary of what is truth and what is up sale for companies. We are at the mercy of the money makers unless we grow and raise our own food.

Deb hard to guess who likes what. we usually have cousin & wife for holiday dinners. they like white meat turkey too, so I got a turkey roast /breast. I was tired of leftovers no body liked, plus cooking a whole turkey the parts we liked got over done, before the dark meat was cooked. Most of us like all the side dishes more anyway! the last 5 yrs I've bought a smaller alternative. cooks faster, less carving. I think turkeys have the same growth pattern now as chickens with bigger breasts. some of it is selective breeding but I worry about antibiotics and contaminated feed too.
yes, like diane sue mentioned, if you don't want to raise your own birds ( I don't) you make the best choice you can and don't lose sleep. Consumer reports has a long report in the last issue about heavy metal and antibiotic and drug contamination in weird spots in the food supply. I am more concerned about what I eat daily vs one meal a few times a year.

in my great seafood experiment I tried some trout last night. yuck. neither of us could get thru it. it is really hard to get those tiny bones out. it was a package of 4 fish so I will try filleting the other two to minimize the bone issue. you would need to be REALLY hungry to pick thru that. I looked up how to remove bones but not good enough for either of us.
going to ride, more later.

Today I did Cardio Slam for 50 minutes and 361 calories burned. I always do the premix that shows the low impact modifications.

Deb, I hope you have a good day babysitting. You will probably be as tired as you would be from doing a workout.

Judy, I’m sorry about your husband’s uncle. I hope he gets better soon. Great job Great Glutes. I like that workout a lot. I have never done more than 3 segments of Tabatacise and I have no desire to do more!

Valerie, too bad about the failed trout experiment. I don’t mind fish with bones, but it’s not my first choice. My Dad loved to fish, so we ate a lot of fish with bones when I was growing up.

Diane Sue, I usually buy organic chicken from Sprouts, but recently I bought a package of their regular skinless boneless breasts. The pieces were huge! I separated them individually before freezing. I ground one of them in my food processor to make chicken breakfast sausage. I hate the texture of ground chicken from the store, but doing my own worked out fine.

Lori, good luck with your conference.

Today I did Cathe Live Total Body Giant Sets #2, 62 minutes, (58 actual), met 4.2, 287 calories, heart rate average 106, max 145, 1,284 steps. I did write everything down before I did it, but I still had to stop and make a couple of changes in my notes. Cathe sometimes lists an order of the names of the workouts and then when they are done, they are not quite in the same order or the count is off, which is understandable when you are doing something live. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Just Step, 24 minutes, 172 calories, met 6.5, 2,220 steps, heart rate average 155, max 188. Total time was 86 minutes, calories burned 459. I really wanted to go to Sprouts so I could start on some things for Sunday's family birthday dinner. It has been raining almost non-stop. Our sun room decided to leak the last two days, so that is a real hassle. It was fine at first. I am ready for it to stop. My Spark is little, I won't go out when there are flooded roads. It is just not worth it. Hopefully it is gone when I pick up my grandchildren from school Monday. My dishwasher decided to start leaking around the corners. I looked it up and checked and the gasket is split at the two top corners. It looks like another repair. I wonder if that will be easier than the freezer that was a 100 dollar loss for a gasket. This one doesn't have a gazillion screws in it. There are none. I watched youtube and I guess it is just getting it places right and smooth.

Valerie, I found 1 bone in a piece of mahi mahi recently and had a hard time eating it after that. I don't like worrying about getting a bone stuck in my throat. I remember my sister in law cooking up fresh trout when her guys had been fishing. It was delicious. When my husband talks me into buying a whole turkey, I usually carve up and put the dark meat in freezer bags and give it to the dog. It doesn't get eaten and we usually have around 17 or 18 people eating it. My husband thinks it should be set out like the old times where it looks all pretty and then someone carves it at the table :) Last time I cooked a whole one, I carved it in the kitchen and put it on a platter. My husband was sad because we didn't get pictures of the turkey carving. I guess a family tradition, but I hate the waste. Two large turkey breasts work for me and someone usually brings ham. The white meat turkey makes a good soup when there is left overs. I read an article about protein powders and the vegan varieties being the worst for having metals and toxins in them of all that were tested. I keep reading about finding well sourced sources for supplements and foods. It can be worrisome. Many of the supplements are processed and packaged in the US, but much of the product comes from out of country. Even if it says made in the US you may find in small print somewhere that it is a product of China, Brazil, Argentina, New Zealand, etc. So, unless it has certain identifiable labels saying how it was checked out for contaminants, you really do not know what you are getting.

Carolyn, I have ground chicken breast in the food processor before and it is much better than the packaged stuff. I have only tried the package stuff once and disliked it. It was slimy and did not taste right. I wondered if they ground the skin up into it.

Diane Sue, nice workout today. Was that the Live workout from yesterday? My husband is the same with taking pictures of the whole turkey on the table on holidays! Slimy and mushy is what I thought about purchased ground chicken. I’m sure that they grind some dark meat in with the breast and it’s over processed. When I make my own I know what I’m eating.

we are back 1 hr 45 at the tree farm. I fell a couple times today. not serious but when I try to get up some uphill, sections that I haven't "gotten" before, I can topple its at very low speed, so just my dignity is wounded. I keep trying things I haven't ridden before and have conquered a few spots but not all. this is the best time of year because tree roots are dry and dusty, no mud. when exposed roots get wet, spots get slimy and impossible

trout bones are so tiny! I followed directions to get the spine and the main bones, but there are so many more. by the time I have pulled it all apart to get bones... I don't want to eat it anymore. will try fillets next even if I lose a lot of the meat in the process. this might be fine in a restaurant, and not fine for my kitchen.
I use a little ground turkey.
diane sue I was thinking of you with the problems with heavy metal contamination in protein powders. this was a general article and I don't remember specifics but yes, the problem is the world wide market things are bought from everywhere and combined and its not possible to reliably ID where the components come from. bad enough with pet food! I will find the article and re read in the current magazine.

I ordered a gasket for my dishwasher and my husband called a roofer when he got home. So much rain! It was in the 70's here today. It usually rains around here during the state fair.

Valerie, it sounds like you really enjoy the rides when you conquer something new :) Without mud sounds good. The sad thing about a lot of pet food companies is they are owned by the same people that make produce our food. After reading that article and some others I became wary of buying cheaper supplements off of Amazon that claimed to be the same thing. I prefer at least using the bigger name companies that claim the testing etc. and purity on their products. You constantly see people asking if products are US. Herbal supplements are something else that are not all harvested in the US. Amazing Grass claims they grow their own stuff for their greens powder. That is pretty much the one I have stuck with since they are a midwest company. With autoimmune problems it is best to avoid toxins as much as possible.
