Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/18

Hi Everyone,

I have to get caught up on posts today. I'm taking an active rest week from training, then I will start back up with XTrain next week. I will be doing mostly Jessica Smith workouts and yoga/stretching.
The weather has been so nice this week, sunny and in the 80's. Very nice for this time of year.

Tomorrow we go for a cardiovascular screening. We do this every year. It's at a local hospital and they do blood pressure, EKG, carotid artery ultrasound, abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound, and screening for peripheral artery disease.

Deb-I'm sorry about your friend's husband :( Good job with the workouts. I hope you start to feel better soon. It must be so frustrating to have this go on for weeks.

Diane Sue-Great workouts! Yes, I agree about the injury selfies. I don't understand it myself. I might have been a little more of a daredevil when I was younger but I am definitely not one now. The last thing I want is to get injured or break something.

Valerie-The worst biking accident I had was when I was riding with a friend on a bike path. We came up to a split in the path. I thought we were going one way and she thought we were going the other. She ran into the side of my bike and I went flying. She stayed upright but I landed on my right hip. I was a little bruised and sore but I finished the ride and didn't have any problems afterwards. This was about 20 years ago and my bone density must have been pretty good. I have a friend who had a similar crash in her mid 50's and ended up in the hospital for 6 weeks with a broken hip. The good news there is that she recovered and continues to bike today, 10 years later.

Josie-I hope your lower back feels better. I'm with you on riding indoors. There have been too many accidents around here for me to feel safe riding outside.

Lynda-The live workouts do seem to have more impact. I am also more earthbound than airborne. I've never been able to do those tuck jumps like Cathe does. I like regular jumping jacks but I don't care for the air jacks.

Hi to Lori, Carolyn & Caitlin!

Judy

Deb, hope you are making some progress. those 3 terms( heartburn, reflux, gerd) get used interchangeably. my understanding is all refer to the same thing. maybe a Gastroenterologist would define them in different ways. there is a sphincter muscle at the top of the stomach where the esophagus joins. it's supposed to keep acid in the stomach where it belongs. some foods.... the usual suspects like citrus, coffee, tomatoes, etc can cause the muscle to relax and acid leaks upwards. also being overweight, tight clothing, lying down flat especially with a full stomach, can cause mechanical pressure on the muscle. I don't know about the "too much, too little" acid business.

I make Shephards pie too, but a vegetarian version with mostly broccoli, onions, carrots, spinach and mashed potatoes on top. I love cauliflower but not much as a sub for potatoes. I like potatoes but don't have them very often. I will post a link to a particularly good tofu dish I have made twice now. so easy, so tasty. comes together in 15 minutes without any exotic ingredients. I don't think I posted it here the first time I made it.... sorry if this is a repeat.
http://www.seattletimes.com/life/wellness/cut-fat-or-carbs-the-way-to-shed-pounds-may-be-neither/
I picked up a 4 pack of tofu at Costco. lots of tofu to enjoy.

I got good news about the food forum I used to post to that was recently closed down. connected to Cooking Light magazine. it closed, but 2 women quickly organized a new forum literally over a weekend, and got it up and going before the CL one closed, so hundreds of people were notified and made the switch over. they did an amazing job and it is up and running. Many of us posted at the CL forum for decades, as Fb is just not what any of us wanted or enjoy. it is so sad to see forums, where people actually can discuss things, seem to be disappearing in favor of tweets.

I woke up with irritated nose and throat this morning and am hoping it's not the start of a cold. I got out the zicam, vit c, and an antihistamine and will try to head this off. it's raining this morning so we can't do a planned mt bike anyway. I will do an upper body weight workout without a lot of heavy breathing and maybe I will dodge the bullet.

Today I did X Train Bis and Tris--my least favorite body parts to work I followed that with BarreAmped Strengthen and Stretch lower body and upper body stretches.

Deb, I'm glad that you were able to do your workout. As for the NG's fall cleanse/recharge it is a really clean eating version of what I usually do. I did not eliminate coffee, but I am sticking with the plan otherwise. I had already made some changes with the Breakfast Bootcamp so this is minor tweaking. I'm adjusting to no sugar and I miss my morning toast, but I like it overall. There are many elements that I will continue like drinking the "lemon elixir" each morning to aid digestion. That is a teaspoon of ACV and juice of half a lemon in a cup of warm water. The recipes that I have used are very good.

Have a great day everyone.

This morning I did Ripped with Hiit Lift it Hit it Legs, 41 minutes, 200 calories. I followed with Hammer and Chisel 15 minute Glute Chisel, 18 minutes, 98 calories. I wanted to get some abs in so I did 10 minute ab chisel, 11 minutes, 25 calories and Rapid Fire Kickbox and Core Burn, standing and floor core and the stretch, 24 minutes, 403 calories. Total time 94 minutes, 82 calories. I have two of my younger grandchildren this evening. I need to go find some healthy snacks without sugar or dyes in it. My daughter has was upset Sunday because church keeps feeding them candy. They do so much better without all of that stuff. I have homemade chocolate chip cookies and ice cream but I guess that would not be the best thing. I made the cookies Wednesday for family and then froze them. I saw some pumpkin seed chips at Sprouts and crackers.
I am feeling annoyed with the fact that I feel I have increased my workouts and weighed in at 2 lbs heavier. It must be the diet or else the 2 plus gallons of fluids I am drinking because of that allergic itchy tickle in my throat that will not go away no matter what I try. I have had some cheats the last couple of weeks so I need to take control again.
On Ripped hiit legs I pretty much went 5 lbs heavier than Cathe most of the time. I did do her weight though on a couple of moves.

Judy, you are lucky that you have strong bones. That accident could have been bad. I was more of a daredevil as a child but not as much so as some. The older we get the longer it takes for recovery from injuries.

Valerie, I have a Clean Eating Magazine of Comfort Foods that has a good shepherds pie recipe that has potato and cauliflower mixed together as the mashed topping. It takes away a lot of the cauliflower taste. I love cauliflower so it is yummy to me. That recipe looks good and pretty easy. That is wonderful that some of the ladies started a new forum. I bet a lot of the women are happy.

Carolyn, I was doing the lemon and ACV but I keep getting conflicting messages on the histamine intolerance and low histamine eating suggestions. One says no citrus and the other says lemon juice. One lets you have fermented products and one suggests that you avoid them so no ACV. Since it did not seem to help much eliminating either for allergies I have started back with the lemon juice. I mix it into my greens, spirulina, and cinnamon concoction in the mornings. I was adding the ACV too and a few drops of stevia but have not gone back there.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Low impact hiit circuit (52 min.). Really a favorite because it covers everything--cardio and weights.

Deb, good for you getting a weight workout in! I hope you feel better soon. That is sad about your friend's husband.

Judy, that is quite a battery of tests. Does the hospital offer the screening for free or do you get insurance coverage? It was the anniversary of my SIL's death a few days ago, and I must confess, I can't imagine getting on a bike. After her death, we then started hearing about all these other traffic-related bicycle accidents, which certainly added to my trepidation.

Valerie, I thought you might find an article in the most recent New Yorker interesting. It's on the obesity epidemic and bariatric surgeries as a solution. I thought one comment in the piece was especially interesting: "like all predators, we were meant to feast and fast." I guess that suggests we should work more for our food and not to expect short intervals between meals. There was also an alarming bit on the winners of the Biggest Loser. All but four of them have regained the weight they lost. Such radical weight loss programs apparently have a permanently slowing effect on metabolism, so losing a lot of weight quickly is A VERY VERY BAD IDEA.

Diane Sue, I just received a notice for jury duty on Dec. 13, but by that time I will be 70, so I can opt out. Gave me a chuckle to think I will actually be happy to be 70 years old!

Celebrating Kim's birthday this weekend with friends--another mate who has a birthday about the same time.

Lynda-They charge $50 for the tests, and another $20 for cholesterol and A1C blood test. Insurance doesn't cover the screening but it's not very much to pay for all of the tests.

Judy, I totally missed seeing your post this morning. I am very nervous about riding in groups. a group of bicyclists can be a bit like herding cats! people can veer off suddenly and there's no time to avoid. DH and I seldom ride next to each other .... too easy to swerve and crash. I usually go first. if we happen to be next to each other and there is oncoming, I always go ahead, and he drops back. safer riding if you have a plan and stick to it. we do a regular road occasionally, but pick the location and time with safety first.

Lynda, my sister had bariatric surgery long ago. it didn't work well. constant diarrhea, malabsorption problems, etc. minimal weight loss. she became overweight as a child, and went to the university for extensive testing. this is 50+ years ago now. nothing really "wrong", but the consensus was she would always battle this.... told to eat less, exercise more, etc. I was always smaller than her, but it has always been a battle. I never had a time where I could eat what I wanted, or what others were eating. a burger, fries and a milkshake is a meal I never ever had. but maybe it's good because I never got used to it, whereas most people have to learn that later in life.
I read about the biggest loser people and how it was thought their metabolisms would return to normal .... but they didn't, and they would need to continue very restricted calorie intake to maintain their losses. there are more surgical options now and I think people generally do better than my sister did but not everyone does. Bummer on the jury duty! think you'll accept it or opt out?

Diane sue I actually like cauliflower and eat it often. just didn't care for it as a sub for potatoes. I like spaghetti squash but not as a sub for pasta.

Hi all! Glad this week is over. I leave for my conference a week from Saturday and this past week is always the crunch week. My new CEO gave me such a wonderful compliment ...he said when he first heard I planned the conference he had some concerns. He knows how much work is involved and would I get it done while doing my other responsibilities...he said I amazed him and I am better than any professional meeting planner he has worked with!!! So nice to have a CEO that understands and respects you. I am very happy! I just came home from work but no one is home and I needed to tell someone and you are all it!!!

Been keeping up with my workouts. This morning I was short on time so did a 20 minute tabata battle rope workout. Short but intense and wanted to get something in.

Deb..so sorry about your friend's husband. Always sad. Good to see you are back at your workouts. I bet it feels good. Hope you find out what is causing the HB. I can't imagine having it like you have had.

Lynda...I agree with a lot of the live workouts have weights in them so at times I find it hard to choose. I like that she makes it easy to do splits with them though. I do that frequently...30 minutes of one then 20 to 30 minutes of another. No one has mentioned a bone density test to me yet. Do I need to ask? I saw your first one was at 50. Some of my airjacks are not as much air as I would like. Happy Birthday to Kim!

Carolyn...I have a spin bike that I use more often in winter. My workouts on it are about 30 - 40 minutes. Any longer I am dying! It amazes me that Judy goes as long as she does. I love the kellogs pumpkin poptarts toasted. It is a secret indulgence of mine. Lately, for some reason I like working my bis and tris.

Valerie...do you know about when Ins. covers bone density test? Just curious. I think I am going to call my doctor on Monday. Thinking I am due for a physical anyways. I would love to have your shepards pie recipe. Would you mind posting? That is great about the forum.

Diane Sue...how is your knee? I love everything Pumpkin too. My girlfriend does baking on the side for busy moms and was making pumpkin pies...she made one for me without me asking for one. Thanks for your recipe!!!!!

Judy...I'll have to say some of JS workouts surprise me. They can be tougher than they look. I am loving Xtrain and glad I revisited.

Jose... Sounds like a fun time in SD!!! Hope your back is better!

Have a great night all!!!!

Lynda, you are lucky. That is a good reason to like being 70:) I have 6 years to go so that leaves the possibility of 2 to 3 more times for me. Hopefully I get bypassed.

Valerie, I am not a real fan of tomato sauces on spaghetti squash. I thought this pumpkin pasta sauce might taste good though. If not I will use the spaghetti squash another way. There is one sauce that is a Bolognese sauce in Practical Paleo that I love with spaghetti squash though and it does have some tomato paste in it. I think that the coconut milk, wine, and nitrate sugar free bacon makes a difference. It is a real thick sauce. She took the wine out of the recipe in her 21 Day Sugar detox cookbook. It still tastes great that way as well.

Lorie, that is a wonderful compliment. It makes it worth all of the work and effort you put into it. I am glad that he appreciated it so much. It sounds like a tremendous job. My knee feels fine now. I did keep the weights a bit under what I normally would have done today. I am just not pushing it real hard. Even my jumps were not as big as I normally would have done them. I love pumpkin pie :) What a nice friend.

Good morning,

Chilly here this morning, I think fall has arrived.

Judy, that's a good plan for a rest week. Although, JS workouts look a lot easier than they are. That screening sounds really good, and a good price.

Valerie, not a fan of tofu...but the recipe looks interesting. Great news that your food forum is back in business.

Carolyn, I would be afraid to do that elixir right now. As for the the recipes from the Breakfast Boot Camp, which do you like?

Diane Sue, we never had candy at church! I think the pumpkin seeds and crackers are a better snack too. Are you eating something that is making you retain the liquid you are drinking? John does not like tomato sauce on spaghetti squash either, but I have not found anything else to use so far.

Lynda, I remember the accident like it was yesterday....so sad. I can see how riding a bike would be difficult to do. That's great that you can opt out of jury duty....I guess there are some perks in aging after all...:).

Lori, that's great that you have a CEO that appreciates what you do. It makes all the difference. Yes, bone density testing is usually around age 50.

Agility class this morning, then the first play of the season for one of our local theaters that we have season tickets for.

Take care,

Lori it is great that your hard work is appreciated. It feels worth it if someone recognizes your accomplishments. I will post the shepherds pie later today.

link http://www.chowhound.com/post/shepherds-pie-recipe-original-laurels-kitchen-cookbook-647990 this is from about 1980. I still use this recipe. I have the book.

I also don't like tomato sauce on spaghetti squash. I don't think the flavors go together at all. acting like it is "pasta" is plain goofy. I like spaghetti squash..I found a way to use it last year that I liked. Can't remember what it was, but I know I filed it to use again. spaghetti squash smells kind of "perfumey" .

Deb, the tofu is not in little square chunks, but resembles scrambled eggs. the avocado/cilantro sauce on top is great, and DH doesn't even like cilantro. it is one of my favorite tofu dishes. I make the sauce in a food processor rather than with a stick blender. overall, extremely easy to make, and tasty if you like chili powder/cumin, avocado.

I did x train bi's & tris, core 1.

Lori when I had a dexascan I had private insurance, and it was covered but that is getting close to 15 years ago. I think you need to check your policy or call the CS to find out what the criteria are. I've had one or two now. I think the first was in my early 50's, as menopause was done.

I really cut calories this week. my jeans feel better. maybe I had fluid retention going on. we are going off again for a couple days, hoping to do a short backpack before nights get too cold and too long.

Another day, another neighborhood mass shooting. 5 people this time, in a Macys store. not far from here. I shop often there and we do bike rides near there. dismal.

Today I did Amy Bento Ross Hip Hop Walk, 56 minutes, 307 calories. I do not think I ever did all of this one. It was pretty good. I purchased it when I had just had the knee surgery and tried some of it, but I my knee still hurt some and I could not move very quickly. It is not hard to follow at all. I then put in Amy's Advanced Step Challenge thinking I was going to do a short premix. I was having a hard time just doing the choreography without the break down since it has been a long time with it. I went back to the start and did combo 1 and 2 and the stretch, 42 minutes, 191 calories. Now I remember that combo one was the hardest to get. I used to do this one all of the time and add the spins that some of the others did. I need to get out her last one she did that is Step Challenge 5. It had so many turns at the start off the step and my knee did not love it. I did some of X Train Delts bonus first 2 exercises ( I had phone calls and just decided I was done since the grandchildren are coming in awhile) Total time was 1 hour 46 minutes, calories 521. So far I have 11, 279 steps today on my Fit Bit. I got a lot from the walk workout.

Deb, I do not use much salt and did go over my meals. I checked My Fitness Pal yesterday and the sodium was really high. I went back and checked the taco salad from Wild Diet that I made and it ha huge amount of sodium. I fixed it though because I never added the salt to it. I took the salt off of the recipe. There is so much spice in that recipe and with the avocado and lemon juice it was tasty without the salt. I was thinking I need to check some of these cough and throat lozenges I keep using. I really have been drinking loads of water every time I start coughing which is day and night. The weight will probably drop back off when I get these allergies under control I used to keep a goody jar for my grandchildren for after school and stuff. I kept it full of Cliff Kidz bars and nutrition bars instead of candy. They always liked packs of nuts as well. There really is no need for candy.

Valerie, it is almost not safe to go anywhere anymore. I have used a recipe in one of my Paleo cookbooks that had spaghetti squash topped with eggs that was pretty good. That shepherd pie recipe looks good. Broccoli with mashed potatoes would go good together. Tomatoes never go well with any kind of yellow squash . I don't even like it in the summer variety. It is okay with zucchini but I would like other stuff in it as well.

Hello Ladies,
Today has been very busy for a Saturday, but I finally have down time. My workout was Low Impact Sweat cardio 1. I managed to get it done before leaving for my Saturday activities.

Deb, I agree that adding lemon elixir at this point is probably not a good idea for you until you know what is going on. Recipes that I like from Breakfast Bootcamp are the oatmeal, buttery quinoa, butternut breakfast pudding, chicken apple patties, and crustless quiche. I also like the banana oat pancakes and the zucchini bread. Both are gluten free.

Valerie it's great that you were able save your Cooking Light food forum. I have subscribed to Cooking Light since it first started, but it has changed a lot in recent years. I have that original Laurel's Kitchen cookbook, but I haven't made many recipes from it. I also have the Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book and that one I have used extensively. It was very helpful in learning to make whole wheat bread that tastes good!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Wow Carolyn... I have the original Laurel's Kitchen, the updated one from a few years later, AND the bread book. I used to make bread out of there all the time. I would still make bread ....except we don't eat much bread anymore...seldom have sandwiches for lunch. It was how I learned to work with yeast dough. Store bought bread is a lot better than it used to be too.

I have not bought a copy of CL since the last big format change a couple years ago. two ladies from the forum put their heads together and created the new forum. a lot of the same people are using. I'm not sure forums will ever be as busy as they used to be, but it is so far working well and a good place to talk food & cooking. I will stick in a link for you. there is no connection to the magazine. magazines seem to be in decline all across the board.
