Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/18

Carolyn I am glad to hear your DH is being checked thoroughly. I had a similar course of events... unexplained fainting. I had to go thru a similar workup in 2009. an echo is really fun to watch if the set up allows it. the holter monitor is a bit inconvenient but not uncomfortable.
I am still thinking of WW again, but not until we are done with our fall traveling. I don't want to pay for WW if I can't do monitoring and we will be out of cell range. My last experience with WW wasn't stellar, to say the least.

We did our usual 26 mile road ride. 2hrs 10 min. planned on mt biking but his tooth is sore and there's a lot more jolting with that. his procedure is tomorrow. he's had a lot of root canals and is not even stressed about another one. I would be stuck to the ceiling.

Lynda you must have had an excellent crop. Ours was good until now but it's gotten cooler and wetter and tomatoes start getting fungus and wilt and even nice looking tomatoes want go to mush in a few days. I ate a lot of them! gave a bunch away too.
DH is so diligent about his oral care... brushes and flosses, has 3x yr cleaning, never lets anything go. but he was born with crummy teeth and care as a child was not good. there is a genetic component as he and a sister have almost identical problems, down to the same teeth. she is getting a full set of upper implants for $25,000.
I worry about crops failing because of a lack of pollinators like bees. we still have a lot of bees here. it will be a disaster if agricultural crops start failing because of lack of pollinators. imagine hand pollinating crops!.

Hi ladies!!! yesterday was a rest day and today was Xtrain Bis and Tris. Sunday I did a JS Metabolic workout from her Walk Strong second set. I followed up with the barre section form LBB. Cathe uses the tower so wanted to feel like I was getting my money's worth. I then did some Tabatas using my heavy ropes. The JS workouts are good to do when doing heavy ropes. Nice balance.

Lynda...I like the Boxing with Hiit too. Great workout. I am enjoying Xtrain a lot this time around.

Diane Sue...I wish I could do my own thing with workouts. Following a rotation is working best for me. I did several SB rotations and loved them. Then I add on when need be. I lke being told what the workout of the day is. Chalk drawings with grandchildern is always nice! I have not had a bone density test yet. What age do they start?

Deb...glad the doctors visit went well. Wow has it been 2 weeks already?

Valerie...great job on keeping up with Cathe weights! I remeberbthat chain injury too. Sounded really nasty. I feel for your husband having a root canal. I have had more that my share. I have mostly crowns on my teeth right now. Certainly not proud of this. Growing up the money was tight and my mom worked so many hours. Was hard for her to keep up with our dental. As kids we could careless if we brushed or not! Payimg for it now though.

Carolyn...never thought to do the Ice/xtrain rotation. I bet it is great! I am always sad when my son leaves.

Hi to Judy, Josie and Caitlyn!

Lorie, the workout I have written up is a rotation I made up. I would be using the same workouts alternating ABA one week and BAB the next. If that makes sense. I just need to make a few changes. I am thinking of some of the cardio day workouts and using some newer workouts for them. Maybe a kettle bell workout here and there. I have several rotations that I have kept that I had written up. I do think I would enjoy the same type of workout but using newer workouts though. I really do like doing dvds, but I like variety in trainers as well. I have a rotation I wrote up that used some of P90X with other workouts that eliminated so many push ups. I think that they generally suggest a DEXA or DXA (I think they changed the name for some reason) scan after menopause or at any signs of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Since I had had the hysterectomy in my 30's, I went into menopause a bit early. Also somewhere in my 40s I had a stress fracture and I cannot remember how they discovered it at this point. I spent quite a few years taking Evista and then at one point they had me on Fosamax till it mended itself. Then I was back off of all of it and they just monitored from then on.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. I started one, but did not get through the warm up.

Valerie, I am doing most of those things....I did ask John to find some wooden blocks to prop up the head of the bed. I hope all goes well with your DH root canal today. Agree on the genetic compound with teeth....like your DH, some that take excellent care still get issues, and others can go for years without seeing a dentist and have no problems. The same goes for dogs....

Carolyn, thanks for the info on the ginger tea...

Lynda, found out that all of the meds have magnesium salt base as an inactive ingredient. The pharmacist said she thinks that it is the active ingredient that causes the diarrhea.. The DR told me which to change to that has a different active ingredient and it worked. He did say that he wanted to give it some time to see how I reacted to these meds, then do the scope. It is scheduled for 10/28. Do you just leave those tomatoes by the house with a sigh that says "Take All You Want"...?

Diane Sue...mmm....a pumpkin pasta sauce sounds interesting! I may have to look for that....I wish we had a Sprouts! :(. It is really scary what they are doing with pesticides these days...they are in everything, and now eliminating the bees????

Lori, have you tried using the Tower on some of those Leg Live workouts that Cathe has with barre work? Its actually been 3 weeks today when the heartburn started....

Hi to Josie & Judy,

The AC guy came, the leak seems to be fixed, but John says the air is still not coming out right, he wants them back to fix it again. Agility class tonight...

Take care,

Deb, the reason I mentioned raising the bed is that may not be easy. ours is a king. when we raised the head, we could see the middle part of the frame was under a lot of stress so we had to prop the mid section too. I have a good view of the underside of the bed when coming up the stairs, and I didn't like what I saw! furniture is not well built anymore. it would have split the wood or the joints eventually, without support midway.

Lori, I think they like to get a dexascan around menopause, like diane sue said, to get a 'baseline" measurement so they can see if you are losing bone or holding. family history too. most people wait until their insurance covers it. it's not an invasive or involved procedure.

I was lucky and picked my parents wisely, in terms of teeth, anyway. I also loved milk, didn't like soda or candy as a kid. I still don't. except for a little chocolate..... DH was the opposite. candy, soda, bad fam hx, plus poor care. we have spent a small fortune on his teeth!

I hate to see extensive pesticide use on crops. a lot of crop seed, like corn, are sold as Round-up resistant. so you can spray glyphosate products to kill weeds and not affect the plant you are growing to harvest. it makes it easier for farmers. I think they must have had to till between rows to control weeds before this. we grow unresistant corn. It's a long season crop to grow and the weeds can overwhelm the corn. it is a lot of work to go thru the rows and pull weeds without also dislodging the corn plants. we grown only a small patch.

Today I did spinning with the Spin and Burn dvd. I bought several when I purchased my spin bike in 2011. I looked at Spinerval DVDs but decided against getting one. They seemed too advanced for me. I do like spinning for the variety it provides but I don't do the Cathe spinning.

I love all things pumpkin so the pasta sauce sounds very appealing. I might go to Sprouts to check it out. I found a great recipe for butternut squash with caramelized onions in Eating Well magazine. My family really likes it.

I had a bone density test 2 years ago. Fortunately there were no problems. I think I am scheduled for another one at my next annual visit.

Hello to everyone.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live PHA (52 min.).

Deb, sorry to hear you didn't feel well enough to finish that workout. At least your doctor prescribed something that won't give you diarrhea. No, we are set back from the road about a quarter mile, so no one would see a sign offering tomatoes. We never get any trick or treaters either. I usually drop tomatoes off with friends when I go down to my office in the afternoon.

I have seen jars of a pumpkin pasta sauce at Stop and Shop. Maybe I should try one. I love making squash soup in the fall. There is a lovely recipe at Epicurious.com that finishes with a cider cream you swirl in. Looks a bit like a restaurant presentation. You reduce the cider and then mix it with a bit of sour cream and chives. It feels more like summer today though.

Lori, I go through stages where I need a rotation and then at other times I just want to choose something when I get up--Surprise! I guess my only 'rule' is to alternate weights with cardio. But a lot of the weight workouts on Cathe live also seem to have cardio going on with them--like the PHA this morning.

Diane Sue, did you have HRT after that early menopause? I think my first bone density test was at 50, but I was not yet even in perimenopause. Then at 55, 60, 65. I bet I have one this spring at 70.

Carolyn, I tried your ginger tea. Really nice! I bet it's good as an iced tea, too.

My arm is a little sore from my flu shot, but I'm glad that's done for another year.

Today I did Ripped With Hiit #2, 20 minutes, 172 calories. I then did Ripped with Hiit abs 1, 10 minutes, 37 calories and followed with Ripped with Hiit Back, Shoulders, and Biceps, 54 minutes, 250 calories. I finished off with Barre Amped Lower Body Stretch, 20 minutes, 24 calories. Total time was 1 hr 54 minutes and calories burned 483. I was going to do legs today but my knee hurt yesterday after we got back from the State Fair. I guess it was Tabatacise followed with all of the walking. I iced it and stretched last night before bed. It was okay this morning but I thought I would be easier on it this morning. I picked up pumpkin butter, pumpkin pasta sauce, and pumpkin spice salsa today. I liked the suggestions in the store ad of using the pumpkin pasta sauce as a sauce for veggies. I had purchased a spaghetti squash with it in mind. Also the pumpkin maple butter has a suggestion on it of using it in yogurt. It just might be tasty that way. They had pumpkin bbq sauce a pumpkin vinaigrette , the syrup ingredients were not bad but I really do not have much use for it. There was a lot more but those were things I was interested in.

Deb, Sprouts is my all time favorite store. I am sorry that you were not able to workout. I really hope things get better for you.

Valerie, I had wondered after reading something online if it was more a scare tactic and not fact that the plants that are resistant to insects have their own built in pesticide and it is really not sage for humans. You get so much conflicting information. I used to have a garden and we kept a small patch of corn. It was always so good. My Dad used to bring me corn from the farms in Nebraska. It was always so much better than what I pick up at the grocery store.

Carolyn, I like doing spin bike workouts for something different once in awhile. Mine are mostly Cathe's and I have a Mindy Mylrea one. Also one of my favorite workouts that I use the spin bike for is Kelly Coffey's Home Gym Intervals. I have never done a spinervals workout.

Lynda, no, they never did HRT. I do not know why, but they did not. Speaking of trick or treating, Sprouts had Halloween goodie packs out. I almost forgot about it. Last year I bought all kinds of chocolate candy and we did not get one trick or treater. To get to our front door you have to walk between the houses and go inside a gate. No one comes to our door except an occasional neighbor, or delivery trucks. I kind of like it that way. This year I guess I will buy something for just in case, but it will be something I do not mind giving to my grandchildren. I did chop up a lot of the chocolate candy bars and make them into cookies.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did a Walk Fit workout on the treadmill. It felt good to get back into it.

Valerie, we have a queen size bed, not sure if there would be an issue...it's a four-poster with a frame all around. Round Up and glyphosphate spraying on plants is really scary....I know it is being done, but wonder what it is causing.

Lynda, do you have a local farmer's market? Maybe give the tomatoes to someone that has a stand there.

Diane Sue, all those pumpkin things sound wonderful! I looked at the "pumpkin" sauces put out under Trader Joe's label...and they are tomato based! :(. I had 4 cookies last night with chamomile tea, and had an issue with heartburn....I guess shortbread cookies are on the "NO EAT" list. :(. It must be the butter.

Maybe a workout, need to get back to weights...see if I can get through more than the warm up.

Take care,

Hi Everyone,
I didn't feel very energetic today but I made myself complete a workout. I did Cardio Leg Blast with Core 2. Of course, I feel much better after doing it.

Deb, about two years ago I bought the Practical Paleo cookbook by Diane Sanfilippo. It's much more than a cookbook and the first half of the book (221 pages) is devoted to descriptions of various health issues and suggestions for food choices. Acid reflux is discussed under the digestive issues. One thing mentioned is that acid reflux and heartburn are usually problems of too little stomach acid rather than too much. You might find the book helpful as you look for dietary solutions in addition to medical. Her approach seems to be similar to the Nourishing Gurus. I am doing their fall food cleanse and have noticed some similarities in food choices.

Diane Sue, I do the KCM Home Gym Intervals with my treadmill. I can get on and off more quickly.

Have a great afternoon everyone.

Hi Ladies,

I did my usual workouts last week, but have not worked out since Sunday. Went to San Diego to see a dear friend that flew from Detroit to attend a course and my DH and I also got to spend time with our son and his family. We took the kids to the New Children's Museum in downtown SD.
They had so much fun because it was a hands on kind of place. I was going to go spinning yesterday, but could not sleep at all and had no energy, today I woke up with pain in my lower back. I got up and got ready to go to bodypump, but when I was trying to bend over and put my contact lenses in my back froze. I did some stretching and took some Tylenol and it seem better now.

I have no bone density issues, but I did suffer a stress fracture on my left ankle from overuse while I was doing marathons. I was sidelined for 6 months.

Deb, glad that you are feeling a little better. Hope that the new meds help.

Garance, I wish I lived near you. I love tomato basil soup and would gladly take some of those tomatoes off your hands :).

Lori, I can't believe is that time of the year again when you have to take care of the conference again.

Valerie, there has been too many bike accidents in my cycling groups. I don't know what is going on, I think that I'm going to stick to spinning for now ;). I used to suffer from black toe nails when I was doing marathons and usually only when I did the actual race. I would not get them while I was training. It was weird.

Hi to Diane Sue, Caitlin and Carolyne!

Josie

Deb that is concerning that something so innocuous sounding can cause problems. the blocks on our bed are about 4 inches high. there was a support under the middle part of the frame too, but the blocks raised it off the floor. we put a shorter blocks under it. it looks kind of ridiculous . some of the problem is because a king is huge compared to a queen. just suggesting to look underneath to be sure what you do is stable.
I did parts of total body metabolic yesterday. started a premix with a blizzard blast. I had no idea there were all those air jacks in there! I don't do air jacks. and burpees. no, did not do much. wasted a lot of time and finally switched back to the regular workout. I wasn't feeling very energetic anyway but did most of it. didn't allow enough time with all the stops and starts.

Today I used premixes. I did Hardstrikes with no conditioning drills or stretch 31 minutes, 187 calories , followed by Rock'm Sock'm Kickbox 5 segments removed mix from the timesavers, 36 minutes, 212 calorie. I finished off with Barre Amped Strengthen and Stretch disc 1 barre power stretch and disc 2 upper body stretch, 36 minutes. Total time was 1 hour 42 minutes and calories 436. I will return to read posts in a bit.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Rock'm Sock'm (53 min.). With the tabatas and some cardio at the end, it may be bit more advanced than the dvd. I liked it, though.

Deb, Kim sells his meat at the town's Farmer's Market, with the approval of the market manager and the local board of health. I don't think the vendors who sell produce would welcome him selling tomatoes, nor the local board of health, which must approve all vendors of produce and food. You can't just show up and expect to be given a space to sell your food or crafts. Limited space and lots of approvals, fees, and inspections are involved. I'm not worried anyway. I have been roasting a lot of the Brandywines for later use. I don't know what causes heartburn but it does seem odd that an innocent cookie would cause so much trouble. Are heartburn and acid reflux the same thing, or is acid reflux a more serious condition?

Valerie, I try to do a few air jacks, but they are pretty un-cheerleader like. There were some today, but I don't feel too bad because some of Cathe's group in the live workouts are pretty much like me--more earthbound than airborne. I am a bit concerned that these live workouts encourage me to do more impact than I probably should. But....I feel okay, so pfft! I will stop when I start to ache I guess.

Carolyn, I totally agree with you on "just do it" and surprise, you end up feeling better (and more virtuous too).

Josie, I would gladly give you some tomatoes if you were around here.

Beautiful here today.

It was funny yesterday because I made dinner for one of my children's family (I do this on Wednesdays) I made shepherd pie making half with mashed potatoes on top and cheese and one with cauliflower mash and no cheese. I also made one for my husband on the side with no veggies just seasonings and mashed potatoes with cheese on top. The family took a bit of all of it. They loved it. I mainly did the cauliflower for myself. Unfortunately I have left overs of the mashed potato side. I guess I could scrape off some of the potatoes and top with the extra cauliflower mash I put away. We had an Asian Salad mix. I told my daughter I guess I should have made a side that went more with the Irish food instead.

Deb, I do know that sugar and fat combinations cause a lot of issues with inflammation and a lot of illnesses. Sprouts Pumpkin pasta sauce has tomatoes in it too. The main ingredient is pumpkin. I bet you could come up with a pumpkin pasta sauce without tomatoes. I would search Pinterest. I was looking at pumpkin stuff on Sprouts Pinterest site and there wee recipes for a lot of their jarred products. They were a bit different than the products they sell. The maple pumpkin butter was a bit different and they used vinegar in the recipe when the jarred stuff has lemon juice in it. It is much like apple butter or pear butter. Really good. It has a lot of pumpkin pie spices in it. I was thinking after looking at the recipes that I could adjust the ingredients to more my liking. I wonder if a person could do some sort of a creamy pasta sauce with pumpkin?

Carolyn, I have Diane Sanfillippo's cookbooks. The first one I purchased was Practical Paleo. I liked all of the information so much that I purchased it as a download as well as having the book. I like how her recipes have adjustments for different health issues. I also have her 21 Day sugar detox, 21 Day sugar Detox Cookbook, (both have recipes) , I did one of her 21 Day sugar detox challenges when she first started doing that. I also have Mediterranean Paleo Cooking that she co-wrote with some other people. I am not as much a fan of the recipes in that one. Too much cinnamon and things like dried apricots along with lamb. I just have not been able to find too many recipes that I liked. I have done the KCM Home Gym Intervals with my Tread Climber which is a bit easier than jumping back on the spin bike. That requires me to carry some dumbbells downstairs for the weight intervals though.

Josie, that is so nice that you got to spend time with family. We have a science and space museum at the Omniplex here and the children love the hands on stuff. There is something there for everyone.

Valerie, I was surprised how many jack variations that there were in the Ice Metabolic workout and it just goes on with the blizzard blast.

Lynda, I had to go back and reread your workout because I was wondering where the tabatas were in Rock'm Sock'm I bet that was more advanced than the Ice workout. I am not surprised that there are things you have to go through for food safety at a farmers market.

We did our usual 26 mile road ride, 2 hrs 15 min. DH is recovering but yesterday was not pretty.

We grow several kinds of winter squash mainly butternut and hubbard. I use hubbard like pumpkin. I think they are interchangeable, except the hubbards have a thicker orange "squash" component to them, and the skins are harder and they keep better. Hubbards are better than pumpkins, but are light green not orange in color on the outside, but they have much more usable flesh to them. I cook the squash, and freeze it in tubs and use it all year for soup, sauces, pies, etc Most of it gets used in main dish things with only a few "pumpkin" pies.

I was totally surprised by all the air jacks. I've done TBM several times now but somehow missed those parts, and was expecting more of the same kind of moves as are in the main workout section. no big air there!. I need to wear a better bra if I want to do that much jumping, and I'm not sure I want to at all

Lynda, as far as I know... heartburn is just the layman's term for acid reflux. GERD is "gastro esophageal reflux disease" and is acid reflux on a more frequent basis. the terms get used interchangeably. I think as it happens more frequently, it's called GERD.

Josie, we would not road ride this much if we didn't have a dedicated trail nearby. we get a little sick of riding the same thing so often, but it is pretty low risk for car conflicts. we do a road ride on real roads sunday morning when traffic is lighter. I have concerns with all the distracted driving that goes on all the time, bad enough seeing it when you are in another car!. so vulnerable on a bicycle. I have never gotten blackened toenails. this last toe stubbing I did turned my toe purple but the nail itself is fine.

when I got back from vacation, my jeans were too tight. no matter how much exercise I do, my system hangs onto every calorie. I have taken the nuts out of my breakfast as that is the one change I know I made. I would like to be one of those lucky people who lose weight when they eat more. Not going to happen here!

Valerie, I used to make " pumpkin pie " out of acorn squash. The family thought it was better than pumpkin. We used to grow acorn squash every year.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Push Pull Total Body. It felt good to do some weight work again. Did not have a good day (heartburn) wise however. Not sure what causes good vs bad days when I don't change anything I have been eating.

Carolyn, good for you for completing that workout...sometimes all you need to do is the warm up and you are good to go! Thanks for the tip on that book. I requested it from the library. They only had the 1st edition, I guess there is a 2nd edition that everyone on Amazon is raving about. How do you like the NG Fall Food Cleanse?

Josie, it sounds like you had a great trip to SD to see the Grand Kids! Hope your back is better soon.

Valerie, will definitely take your advice and look under the bed to make sure there is no stress on other parts. As for air jacks, just sub regular, or even the low impact ones. I use my old Firm step up box for burpees and mountain climbers. Makes all the difference and I feel I get the same benefits from them without going to the floor. Glad your DH is doing better.

Lynda, actually meant that Kim would give his tomatoes to the others to sell for themselves. I think that hearburn and acid reflux are sometimes interchanged but to me they are different. To me, reflux is when what you eat causes backup into your throat...I don't get that at all...I just get a burning sensation in my chest cavity, back of throat etc.

Diane Sue, that sheppard's pie with the cauliflower mash sounds great! Can you post the recipe? or link? I saw that there were a lot of recipes on Pinterest for low acid diets. I am starting to wonder about what Carolyn mentioned and we mentioned here a bit too....is it too much acid, or not enough being made on your own?

Hi to Lori & Judy,

I have a wake to go to today...the husband of one of my staff passed away the other day....so sad. I worked with her for 42 years...

Any plans for the weekend? Take care,

Deb, I used two different recipes and made a couple of changes. Basically I used this one. I did add a couple of Tablespoons of the Tomato Paste but it is not needed. I was on the fence on putting it in there. I also added a little canned coconut milk to the cauliflower. Just a tiny bit though. I drained the ground beef well. If there is much moisture left it can be thickened a bit with some arrowroot powder. I left out the soy sauce and used coconut aminos. I used a bit of garlic powder in the cauliflower topping. I did not top it with the cheese. The second recipe had cheddar cheese on top. I don't know if it traditionally has cheese on top. I always have used recipes where they just baked it till the mashed potatoes or mashed topping got a tiny bit brown.
Cauliflower Shepherds
Ingredients (Serves 4 - 6)
Mashed Cauliflower for Topping
1 medium head cauliflower, washed and cut in florets
3 Tbsp butter, cubed
1/4 tsp fine sea salt
1/2 Tbsp dried or fresh Parsley
Sprinkle of pepper and garlic powder
Base for Shepherd's Pie
2 Tbsp Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 large cloves garlic, minced
1 small onion, finely chopped
2/3 cup carrots, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 cups fresh mushrooms, diced
1 lb lean ground beef (organic grass fed if possible), browned
1/2 tsp fine sea salt
1 Tbsp Worcestershire
1/2 cup GF vegetable or beef broth
1/2 tsp organic GF soy sauce (optional)
1/4 cup tomato paste
1/2 Tbsp parsley
1 cup frozen peas
Assembly of Pie
1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 Tbsp Parmesan Cheese
Paprika
Instructions
Step 1 - Prepare Mashed Cauliflower for Topping
Place cauliflower in a large pot covered with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a gentle boil and cook with lid on for 8 - 10 minutes. Cauliflower should be tender but not mushy. Remove from heat. Drain well. Put the cauliflower back in pot with lid on and let stand for 5 minutes. This ensures the cauliflower doesn't get watery. Don't skip this step.
Place cooked cauliflower in the food processor with butter and spices. Pulse until it becomes whipped/consistency of mashed potatoes (you might want to do it in two batches depending on your food processor size). Instead of butter I have also used plain Greek Yogurt or cream cheese - its pretty versatile so use what you've got. Set aside.
Step 2 - Prepare Base for Pie
Brown the ground beef over medium heat. In a separate pan, fry the oil, garlic, onion and carrots over medium heat until softened. About 3 -5 minutes. Add celery and mushrooms and cook for one additional minute. Add browned ground beef, salt, Worcestershire, broth, soy sauce, tomato paste and parsley to the mixture. Simmer over medium heat for about 15 minutes until cooked through and some of the juice has cooked off (so its not runny). Add frozen peas in for the last 10 minutes or so. I didn't need to thicken mine but if your beef was not lean you may have to thicken with guar gum or another thickener or continue simmering until thickened to your liking.
Step 3 - Assemble and Bake Pie
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spread the beef mixture into a 9 x 13 casserole dish. Top with mashed cauliflower. I djolloped it out evenly over the top and then smoothed it down with the back of a spoon to evenly distribute it over the top. Sprinkle with Mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese and a dash of Paprika. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes until bubbling and cheese is cooked. Broil cheese for a couple of minutes if it doesn't crisp up - it will depend on the type of cheese you use. Let stand for 5 - 10 minutes before slicing .
