Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/11

Hi everyone--

This morning I did ICE Bootcamp Circuit (44 min.). I think this is only the second time I have done this workout because of all the live workouts. I enjoyed it, but I did not go up to 3 risers, stayed at 2.

Deb, did you tell the second doctor that you were pretty sure Magnesium was causing the diarrhea? Ooh--an endoscopy. Is that where they put some kind of camera down your throat to see what is going on? I hope you get some kind of help and soon.

Lori, I bought my ball AGES ago with a really dumb workout from Collage where you bounced a lot. The ball was quickly retired to the barn and made occasional appearances in the pasture scaring calves until Kim retrieved it and put it back in the barn. Then Cathe started using the ball, so Kim cleaned it up and brought it back in the house. It dates back to the 1980s and has never been re-inflated. I should probably just get a new one.

Carolyn, I love that low impact workout and did it every week for months with the core add-on. I like the music at the beginning a lot--makes me want to get moving. Have fun with your daughter!

Judy, I sent my Jessica Smith dvds to my friend in Minnesota because she doesn't exercise and I thought she would find them accessible. It was a set of 4 that I only used a couple of times. Bad investment for me--recommended highly over at Videofitness. One of them had Beethoven's 9th symphony--the Ode to Joy part--as background music to some ballet-like and barre work. I thought it was a funny choice of music and made me laugh.

Diane Sue, I see you are back working out again.

Valerie, welcome back! Sounds like a nice trip despite your injuries.

Today I started with Hammer and Chisel 15 minute leg hammer using an 8# med ball instead of 5 like they do. If you don't have this each move is 60 seconds at 20 slow, 20 med , 20 fast pace. You cannot go real heavy with it. I have used 10# before. I didn't want to make that low back spasm come back. It still comes on and it is usually not when I am working out. I forgot though that I have a stress fracture in one of my hips. I don't know which one. They just commented on it the last time I had a dexa scan. I chose this workout to avoid the extra jumping on Ice Lower body blizzard blast. I followed with Ice Chiseled Lower Body, 49 minutes and modified the jumps. I then did Muscle Meltdown shoulders and triceps. I finished with the 6 minute bonus ball stretch from Barre Amped Strengthen and Stretch. Total time was 1 hour 44 minutes and calories burned 558 calories. I still have two body parts to get in to hit everything once this week. Tomorrow will be back and biceps.

Kelly posted a link on facebook for her website to see a description of the upcoming workouts

Deb, has quitting the meds helped at all with the side effects?

I will come back. I have to leave for a bit to get some shopping done.

Lori, I forget about the workouts that are all in my cases. The ones on the shelves get used more. I think it is Shape Up that seems to skip triceps though. I am sure they are worked a bit in other moves.

Judy, I get the leg cramps and some moves I get toe cramps. I just work it out and still do it. I am kind of hoping the stretching and work with the feet that Suzanne Bowen does helps with that.

Lynda, yes, I am back at the workouts again. :) I have never had my Theraband and Bosu Ballast ball lose air but I have had the blue ones from Beach Body and my silver one I purchased at Target years ago lose air. I took the air out though when we moved. I could not see stuffing my car full of inflated balls. I even deflated my Bosu which had never been deflated. I had to hunt down the pump for it. I used to keep my smallest stability ball a bit soft for a stability ball workout that Sharon Twombly had on what I believe is the Athletic Step Jam workout. She suggested it because you have to hold that ball between your legs while you are hopping around and swinging legs side to side. It tends to pop out when it is full.

Judy, I would have expected something called Ruthless Core to be tough ;)

Carolyn, I am sure that your family time will be very enjoyable.

Valerie, welcome back. 200 people on the same trail would be way to many. I am prone to liking to be alone. My husband and I both tend to avoid crowded places. I am glad you and your husband are both okay. Did the bruising go away?

Has anyone else used purple sweet potatoes before? I bought some at Sprouts and made oven fries to have with my chicken. I looked up recipes on Pinterest and was amazed at all of the ideas. They are an amethyst color inside. Imagine that color of pie or mashed potatoes :) They are not as sweet as jewel yams. I used coconut oil to bake them. They have so many unusual things in Sprouts. Brown in color tomatoes? Anyone try them? I found macadamia nut milk but it was kind of expensive. I would have tried it but I had deleted my coupon off my phone for some reason. My only problem in it was that it had a lot of oriental letters written on the carton. Made me wonder how it was sourced since it was in a shelf stable carton.
I was reading about stress fractures in the hip. I don't think that is the problem. The doctor never said anything and the problem is my low back right side. Movement actually makes it loosen back up and feel better. I may have told you ladies before that they do a dexa scan every two to three years because of the osteoarthritis. I had a stress fracture mid back that they were monitoring and the last one showed it was almost gone. But that is when it was mentioned about one in the hip.. No one mentioned doing anything about it though.

We did a 26 mile road ride today and I am pooped. driving for 11 hours is exhausting. we unpacked a lot last night but will work on figuring out what the electrical problem might be over the weekend. it was very weird. campers are like boats...there is always something! having no power would be unpleasant. we camp without hookups so we run things on the batteries and propane but don't know for sure what will stop working if the power supply failed. didn't want the refrigerator to go out. it runs mostly on propane but I'm not sure if any other power is involved.

Carolyn good luck with the medical appt and your DH. make sure he follows up.

Lynda, that pattern sounds WAY too frustrating. I don't sew very well...not intuitive for me. I have done some big projects. like cushions, seat covers, outdoor gear. difficult but not in the same wa fashion clothing. it used to be so expensive and way cheaper to make your own. I made a beautiful upholstered cushions for our old VW bus. we almost didn't want to give it up because of them. If you have lovely material it makes sense to let someone else take on the project.

Judy if you ever wanted to travel to mt bike, this would be a great place to ride. whitefish trails. we are working our way thru different places to ride, the best so far is Grand Targee ski resort outside of Driggs, Idaho.

I have re-inflated my ball several times but not by much. I have two of them and over years they lose a little air. depends on how firm you want them.

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday was xtrain bis and tris. Today it is all out low impact which I have not done in ages and remembering liking it. I am following up with SB as I am missing barre!

Lynda...I usualy keep my step at 2 risers too and feel I still get an amazing workout. At 5'2" I have short legs! I am picturing the ball in the pasture! Very funny. Wow you ball is old! I have two. A pink one I bought from Cathe not long before xtrain came out then the other is a Giam and much larger that I recently got from work. Someone used it as a chair but she left the company a couple of years ago and it just rolled around the office. A VP asked it I wanted it so sure. I actually like using the larger one over the smaller one.

Judy...thanks for the link. Once I saw the pump I remember seeing one of these in the basemet. If I can't find good to know hey are cheap enough. The move when you have one leg on ball and the other straight up was tough for me. I did it but was not pretty and felt it the next day. I like the Ruthless core too. There are only a couple of the workouts I really do not care for and will never do. Not bad out of 20 workouts. I have done a few of JS walks on Youtube. She makes them fun and some really do get your HR up.

Deb...that stinks you are having so many issues. The endocsopy is good to see really what is going on and hopefully resolve this for you. Whats up with more magnesium?? Crazy!

Diane Sue...thanks for letting me know about KCM's new workouts and I agree they sound great. I am sure I will buy these too. Oh it never ends does it. I like once she has a preorder the dvd comes relatively quick. You certainly are catching up with your workouts. Awesome job! So I am buyng new workouts and I still have yet to do Hammer and Chisel. Have had it since shortly after it came out. I kind of backed away from heavy weights since I really got into barre and high reps. Since I am enjoying Xtrain I do want to have a whirl with Meso 2 and 3 perhaps I will have a go at H&C afterwards. Don't think I have ever used purple potatoes. How were they? What domthey do about stress fractures. They sound like they would be very painful.

Valerie...welcome back! Wow that is alot of people. That would not have been enjoyable for me either. Hope you find that loose connection and get it fixed. I have stubbed my toe like that before also and boy does it bring tears to your eyes. How is it now? Hope his hand is better too. Ouch to both of you!

Carolyn...you can find tons of JS on Youtube. She has workouts geared to all levels and depending on your mood you can always find something. I like her personality a lot. Very down to earth and personable.

Today we are going to the Apple store to preorder the new watches. I love mine but love the new features on this next generation. Waterproof and GPS are huge for me. My husband wants one from observing how I have been using mine. I have a friend that will be buying my current one so this helps the cost a bit. Mine is in perfect condition and she will be getting a great deal. To me technology is like workout dvds too...it never ends!

Hi to Josie and Caitlyn.

Good morning,

I feel much better....long story...will not go into too many details...;)...my GP referred me to a DR....said he was a "GI" guy...one in his practice. I have my own Gastroenterologist...have gone to him for 15 years...however, he is not part of my GP's group. Stupid me, thought it was a different kind of DR that did the Endo...so I went along with it saw the guy Thursday, and scheduled the procedure for this Tuesday. Come to find out, my own Gastro guy does all that too...and if I have procedure done with the new guy, I would be "terminating care" with my own guy....NO WAY! I didn't really like the DR that they referred me to...so I called my own yesterday, and will be seeing him Monday at 1:00. He changed my med...hopefully this one will be ok. So far so good...nuff said on this topic!

Judy, that JS walking workout sounds interesting...did you like the Live Long and Sculpted leg workout?

Carolyn, Yes, that All Out Low Impact is a great workout. Have fun with your daughter this weekend!

Valerie, it sounds like all in all, you had a good time away, except for the problem with the solar power..and the injuries! Good you both are ok.....hope you can get the solar power thing fixed easily.

Lynda, yes, the Endoscopy is where they put the scope with camera down your throat...same type of sedative they use for colonoscopies, but no prep! I told the 2nd Dr ( my own Gastro Md) and he told me a different med to take...seems to be better..( at least as of this minute...LOL). I need to put air in the 2 stability balls I have...one is the one in my workout area..and the other, the one I sit on at the computer. This one is really getting low. I have a funny picture in my mind of your stability ball in the field and calves running around playing with it...:)

Diane Sue, that sounds like an interesting way to do reps. Yes, quitting the first med seems to be helping a lot. Fingers crossed. Have never tried the purple potatoes...but I have seen them in the stores. If you still had a stress fracture in your hip, wouldn't you be feeling it? Maybe like the one in your back, it has healed?

Lori, so you had a person in your office using a stability ball for a chair? I think that's great, but know that in my office that would have been a "no-no"....liability and all that. Yes, KCM usually gets her workouts out about 6-8 weeks after the presale. I am on the fence about the second one with all the 15 minute workouts. Not sure how to use that one...but individually they sound really interesting. As for the first one, I didn't think I would be interested because of the heavy bag workout, but then saw there was a Metabolic one on there so I think I will get that one for sure.

Hi to Josie & Caitlin,

Take care,

Lori when I worked for a big company, they used to have big meetings like that with all activities , meals, outings pre planned by 'someone". If I remember right, we made our own travel arrangements but once we got to Florida.. (always Florida)... everything was pre arranged. always thought it was a monumental task. getting food, activities, rooms arranged for hundreds of people.

we are both doing Ok, not a serious injury for either of us but my toe did NOT enjoy being in a boot. toe is ok for walking and riding, still might not like walking steep downhill in a hiking boot. we knew the easy hike would be busy but this was beyond anything imaginable. it was about 5 or 6 miles RT and not difficult so my toe was OK. GNP doesn't allow large vehicles to use the going to the sun road up to Logan pass. it is a narrow, windy road. we can drive around to the east side of the park but that side is indian reservation land and very little in way of service. with our power questionable, we decided not to do it this time. plus I didn't want to do anything steep.

Deb, that is so frustrating with groups of docs..... I always need to get referrals from my primary care person because I don't use the specialists in her group. turns out my primary care person is moving to a different clinic so I need to get a new primary care. it would be easier if I could use a single group of docs but probably won't happen. still, extra aggravation with all the rules and misunderstandings.

my stability ball seems to lose enough air to make see saw pushups not work but all else is ok. if it's tightly inflated, it scoots away more easily.

Diane sue I've seen little purple potatoes but they are "white" ones, not sweets. I'm not a big fan of odd colored vegies. after cooking they don't always look as intriguing and IMO standard colors taste better.

Today I did Rock'm Sock'm Kickbox, 50 minutes, 325 calories. I then did icy core 1,and muscle meltdown biceps and back, 47 minutes, 122 calories. I have a feeling the weights should have been more than this but I went with Fit Bit and heart rate. Map my Fitness was still lower than Cathe though. Total time was 97 minutes, calories 447.

Deb, I am glad you are going to use your own doctor and are doing better. Hopefully it will say that way.

Lori, I think that you will find that Hammer and Chisel is mostly total body and not real heavy weights. I was noticing some nice definition before I hurt my rotator cuff. I missed the last two workouts of the rotation. I will go back to it sometime though. It was nice having two different instructors. I don't think I would follow the Hammer only rotation though without changing the Plyometric workout being done every week. I believe it was used twice in the both workout rotation. The purple sweet potatoes tasted like sweet potatoes but a bit less sweet than some of the varieties. For me with the stress fracture in my mid back they put me on a generic Boniva and before that it was another generic which I cannot remember the name of. Insurance would not pay for the Boniva one even in generic so my doctor had to change it. That was it. They just do dexascan's every 2-3 years. I never noticed any pain in my back so I was surprised. The same thing with the hip. I was surprised when they said the back had pretty much mended itself but there was still the one in the hip, that I knew nothing about. From what I read though they can be pretty painful and threatening if they are really bad.

Deb, I never felt either stress fracture so I am guessing they must have repaired themselves. Maybe I thought it was something workout related and just ignored it? I know it can be quite painful.

Valerie, I have seen little purple potatoes all over. These are large and sweet potatoes. They are really good. I have tried multicolored beets before I tended to want to pick out the red beets. I did not think the yellow and white ones had as much flavor. I look at rainbow carrots but have not wanted to try them. The white ones make me think of parsnips. I saw sugar cookies made out of purple sweet potatoes. I thought it might be an easy way to get children to eat sweet potatoes. It comes out to a lovely color :) I don't blame you on not wanting to take a chance on being without power.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did JS 6 Mile Mix & XTrain Bi's & Tri's Timesaver Premix. Today I did a timesaver Spinerval, 40 minutes.

Lynda-I don't think I would like the JS videos that you mentioned either. That was an odd choice of music for a workout dvd. That's funny about your ball scaring the calves :)

Deb-it's good that you are doing better and that you will be going back to your own doctor. I liked the Live Long and Sculpted leg workout.
I will probably do that one again.

Lori-how long will it take for you to get your new Apple Watches? I'm planning on getting the iPhone 7 Plus. I want to wait until October or November. I'm sure the Apple Stores are crazy busy this weekend. I agree about technology never ending. There is always something new
coming out.

Diane Sue-I've had a couple of stress fractures from running. I had one in my foot in the late 90's and another really bad one in my
fibula in 2004. I was running so well, had just started marathon training that year and that happened. I had to wear an air cast for a while and
couldn't do any kind of cardio for a few weeks.

Valerie-Thanks! That sounds like a great place to ride. I just finished reading Rebecca Rusch's book "Rusch to Glory". She is the 4 time champion of the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike race. She lives in Ketchum, ID and from her description, it sounds like a paradise for mountain bikers.

Hi to Josie & Caitlin,

Judy

Ha Judy I am very low on the mt bike totem pole! I see a lot of women riding ands I love to see it, but I am not a daring rider. I am too old for that, and even when younger... would not have been. I've gotTen good at falling and not getting injured.... if that is consolation. DH has WAY better balance than I do. I am very nervous going downhill fast and can ride things uphill that I can't do downhill. If I ride the same course several times, I get more daring, but frankly, I don't want to get hurt. I don't want to spend weeks getting over broken body parts ! DH went over the handlebars last week, because, he says, he braked too hard. he could have been injured and was lucky it was not too bad. I don't let myself get speed if I don't know what is coming. I only go fast if I know what's up ahead. I have not been able to do sharp hairpin type corners. so I stop if I need to, and scuffle around the corner and then get back on and continue.
we rode near Ketchum last year but it is high in elevation, and a hard adjustment if you live at "0" feet elevation the rest of the year. Hailey, Ketchum, Sun Valley seemed way over populated to us. totally different from what I remember in the '80's. I am looking for touring rides some uphill and down, not for sharp turns, jumps, "big Air" etc.
