Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/10

Good morning,

Yesterday I did S&S Total Body Giant Sets, Lower Body only premix. I went over to the home page for the site....I don't like the way they keep having parts move in and out....anyone with vertigo would have an attack! Otherwise, it is ok...at least they left the forum section the same.

Diane Sue, sorry about your allergy flare up...I hope you are better today. There was a post by the Cathe Admin people that they are making "improvements" to the site. I don; like the way the MFP app works...it seems a lot more complicated and more steps to do just to enter some food. Not sure why the web version doesn't work on my iPad. I have written to their tech people and have gotten no response. Agree on the McDonald's salads..yuk! I do like Panera's Apple Chicken one a lot.

Valerie, glad your leg is getting better...do yellow jackets die when they sting?

Lori, that's great that Bob went on a ride alone...he must be enjoying it now. When do you leave for the conference?

Carolyn, that is funny that 3 of us picked that workout to do this week out of all the Cathe workouts there are!

A workout, then waiting to see if I can get Keegan in for grooming, and a dental appointment...

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Today's workout was Hardstrikes, 47 minutes, 332 calories, heart rate average 125, max 164, 4,236 steps. I have my 3 year old grandson here today so that is all I will do.

Deb, it is hard to get a good salad at most fast food places. I really like Panera. My husband doesn't care to go there though. Arby's puts turkey deli slices chopped up on the one I get when we go there. I used to get Subways salads with all the toppings, but then they went to chopped salads and by the time they get done chopping the iceburg lettuce it is a wet mess. I have just had to search for answers on the internet for My Fitness Pal. I never find what I am looking for on their site. One thing I do not like is that I used to be able to just pull up the workouts Ihave used previously and drop it into my exercises and adjust calorie changes. Now if I have not done the workout in awhile I have to re-enter all of it as creating a new exercise. If I go to settings and my exercises they are still there and even clicking save doesn't work. It makes it more difficult. I have My Net Diary and it has features that I like better than My Fitness Pal , but I have entered so many of my recipes nutrition information into it and I hate having to do that all over again. I have moved some of the nutrition from MFP to My Net Dairy though.

deb I think YJ's can continue stinging, and don't die like bees. my leg is down another inch and I almost have an ankle again. still itchy.

I usually don't like the dressing on fast food salads, and without dressing there is not much to it. Yuck to iceberg lettuce. a little mixed in with real lettuce & greens is the most I'll eat. disintegrates into flavorless and watery when chopped. I have been making a copycat recipe of the Panera Asian chicken salad. I've never been to Panera but if the copycat is this good, the original must be very good. there are Paneras here but I've never eaten at one.
add me to the list of people who dislike tomato sauce on spaghetti squash. I like spaghetti squash some ways, but as a sub for pasta? terrible flavor and aroma clash to me. NO. tomato sauce does not belong on it. I like both but not together. I bought a cheap spiralizer to try "vegetable" noodles but I haven't liked any using zucchini and sweet potatoes.

there was an announcement that the site was down for service wed late and that must be when I came across the weird non cathe picture.

diane sue... that was my main issue WW last time through. it took forever to enter recipes and there was almost nothing listed that I eat, so every meal was tedious, many ingredient entry. I smartened up and started entering only ingredients with point value but it still took forever. the old numbers stay in their system , so if I re-join most of the data I entered should still be there. it worked differently on my phone vs the desktop, and I never figured out how to use it on the phone. traveling I could not log data. I am more proficient with the phone now so maybe I can take another try at WW. their exercise categories don't fit well either. mountain biking is not in there, and nothing matches cathe style workouts so it is mostly guessing.

Deb I did High reps again yesterday, the upper body pre mix that includes the ab workout. there are a couple tough moves in especially the last one, but I've gotten much better at it after several repeats. we are doing a road ride this morning. my leg is still swollen but less so and still itches a lot but looking at it, you would think I had been thru trauma, not an insect bite.

Lori be sure the rack itself locks or clamps to the car. thieves here steal the whole thing, bike plus rack, just to get the bike. its crazy we have to be so vigilant. most racks hook onto the car somehow, like hooks under edges of the tailgate so stealing the rack requires breaking into the car. I don't think that happens that often. the parking areas near our bike trails often have broken glass because people park, put their wallet, purse in the truck and ride off. guess what happens while they're gone! it is crazy to leave wallet and phone in the car.

Today I did STS D15, Back and Biceps. Time was 1 hour and 162 calories burned. Average heart rate was 95 and maximum heart rate 162. Not a big calorie burner but a great workout. I understand why people like meso 2 much more than meso 1. I am enjoying these workouts.

Valerie, logging food using the WW app is very quick and easy to do. Because my breakfast and lunch meals don't vary much I use the "frequent meals" option. You can also swipe to enter a meal if it's the same or simply to one that you had recently. If I enter a recipe I prefer to do that on the full site--it's easier there. If I want calories, Spark People is also easy to log food because I have my favorite foods lists.

I love spaghetti squash! My favorite sauces are the bolognese sauce from Practical Paleo and the pumpkin pasta sauce with Italian sausage and sage that I found last year. I totally agree that fast food salads are awful. I am often disappointed in the food when we eat out. The drive and wait time are rarely justified by the food. These days I just consider it a social opportunity and I don't focus on the food.

Enjoy your day everyone.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I went for my follow up appointment for my cholesterol. In March it was 229 and now it's down to 201. I did not take anything. I stopped eating red meat and I cut back on saturated fat. My doctor was happy with the numbers and is no longer recommending that I take a statin.

Today I did Basic Step and STS Meso 2 Back & Biceps.

Deb - My back is doing much better. I hope it continues. Thanks for asking! I definitely need to do some outdoor biking before it snows.

Diane Sue-I'm sorry about your allergies :( Mine have really kicked back in this week too. I thought I was getting an upper respiratory infection but my doctor said it's all allergies. He said this has been a really bad year for them.
I haven't had a McDonald's salad in ages. I think it was maybe 2000 or 2001 when I was on a work trip and that was the only thing I could get. I also like Panera. They have good soups and salads.

Valerie-I must have missed the problems with Cathe's new site. It seems to be working fine today. It will take some time for me to get used to but it looks ok so far. I hope your leg is better today.

Carolyn-It looks like we did the same workout today. I agree about meso 2 being more enjoyable than meso 1. I am enjoying the workouts too.

Lori-that's awesome that your husband is getting into biking so much! I wish I could motivate Chris to get back into it. Maybe I can get him to get out with me this weekend.

Valerie, I have a zucchini recipe that I really like from Well Fed cookbook called Zucchini Noodles Aglia Et Olio. It has you take the sliced or as I use spiralized zucchini in a colander or wire strainer and toss with salt till lightly coated and let it sit for 20-30 minutes to remove exxcess water . Then rinse it and drain it well and dry with paper towels. It helps it not be soggy noodles. This recipe has minced garlic, red pepper flakes and fresh minced parsley in it. They make a sort of crumble to stir in with some almond flour and coconut oil. The noodles are only sauted in a dry pan for about two minutes till they are just tender. they use some olive oil to stir and cook up the red pepper and garlic for a few seconds begore shoving it all together. It is yummy and not the typical soggy zucchini noodles. The suggestions were that you could throw in some shrimp or scrambled eggs, pesto, and I have added some chicken chunks to it to make a full meal out of it. Is that Asian salad sweet? I find most are a bit too sweet and have a lot of ginger in them. Sometimes I like them though. I do not buy ice burg lettuce anymore. When my husband brings home a fast food salad I dump some kale or spinach in it. Odd that I used to really like it and gradually turned to spinach and now mostly kale.

With My Fitness Pal, if I can I copy and paste the recipe ingredients into the add recipe and then make adjustments that need made. It still takes too long. If it is something I didn't care for and I know I won't make again I just do the main components individually.

Carolyn, I love that Practical Paleo Spaghetti squash bologness. That sauce has that bit of tomato paste in it , but is so rich in meat and coconut milk and the optional wine that It does not remind me of a normal watery tomato sauce taste of a pasta sauce. The pumpkin sauce I purchased of Sprouts brand last year did not taste so good to me. I did not care for the cinnamon and slight sweetness of it.

Judy . that is great that your cholesterol has dropped. My son in law has had problems with his and my daughter said when he started eating oatmeal in the mornings and exercising more it dropped.

Judy, I must have logged on when they were doing site maintenance wed night. It was a very odd picture, an overly made up woman wearing pearls. I assumed I must have clicked on something wrong. I just went back to an email response since I was just coming to this forum anyway .

Carolyn... I rejoined WW last fall late, and it coincided with the big changes they made (with oprah) away from Points Plus . the first 2 months were very trying and things appeared and disappeared randomly. I had belonged previously and all my old data was there at the start, then disappeared, and some later reappeared. by the time things were working right, I'd lost interest. toward the end of my active time, a lot of things I'd entered and that disappeared, came back. they gave me some extra free time after the 3 months but we were busy with house building and traveling and I just canceled, I was paying for something I wasn't using. I also switched from an android phone to an iphone and it was just too many changes. I keep getting offers to re join. do you log your exercise there? how do you enter Cathe type exercise? what categories do you use? some categories seem to over rate things and others to under rate.

we rode our regular trail ride this morning 26 miles. my leg & foot still swollen but down from yesterday. made my riding shoe too tight.

DH got an egg mcmuffin and hash browns from a McD's a few weeks ago. I have not eaten anything from them in many years.

I feel for you with allergies. I know how miserable I get if I'm exposed to too much grass so I avoid it, but this year is so dry all the lawns are totally dead so no mowing required since about mid june.

Valerie, it took a few months for the WW app to,work as it should. They had to start over with a different vendor. It is great now and people love the bar code scanner feature. My Fitbit syncs with the WW site and app so I don't usually need to log the activity. However, you can log activities just as you do foods. If my yoga workout is 15-20 minutes I will log it manually because the activity points don't register. I just typed in strength training in the search box to see what happens and it comes up fine. When I entered the amount of time that I did today it came up with 7 points. You enter the amount of time and the intensity of your workout. I use my iPad or iPhone and both work fine.

Judy, that is great progress with your cholesterol!

Diane Sue, the pumpkin pasta sauce recipe that I use is a Rachel Ray recipe from the Food Network. She adds a half cup of cream at the end to thicken, but I use half that amount. Sometimes I use coconut milk instead, but a small amount. I use turkey Italian sausage if I can find it. If not, I use ground turkey and I mix up the Italian sausage spice blend from Practical Paleo. It's very good. I was going to insert the link, but I never remember how to do it. If you google pasta with pumpkin and sausage it should come up.

Carolyn thanks for the info. . I will take another look. diane sue, same way. my zucchini crop was poor this year so I haven't experimented with it as much as Id planned.

http://iowagirleats.com/2012/02/06/panera-copycat-salad-recipe/
this is a link to the Panera copy cat Asian chicken salad. there are a lot of others out there. this was the first one I tried and I liked it. the dressing is a little sweet but blends well with the other flavors. it is thin. I found I had way more than I needed so a little went a long way. I think I made the recipe 3 times and never made more dressing since I had leftover. there is plenty of flex in the recipe but I would recommend using toasted sesame oil. I added some toasted sesame seeds but I buy them already toasted as they tend to jump all over. I made it as written. I add dressing separately to my serving so it doesn't get too much. I don't like heavily dressed salads. I made the won tons by baking them in little strips. if you cut the package up into pieces, you can freeze it and pull out a small amount of them to thaw. otherwise the package outdates too quickly to use.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was a BBS Dance workout followed up with a SB arm target that worked everything and tonight I went for a 2 mile run with GiGi. It was a lot hotter this afternoon versus the mornings so it was tough for both of us. We were tired by the time we got back. I leave the house at 3:15am tomorrow. Ugh! Not sure what workouts I will get in while there. I am bringing my bands and hope I can get in Cathe's travel and also the upper body workout I did while down the Cape. Going to try and get a couple of runs in with my son. He is coming this year for the company. He is running the presentations with the AV Techs. Very proud of him.

Deb...How is Keegan doing? Hoping well.

Valerie...crazy that people steal even the bike racks. That is insane. Thanks for letting me know. I will look into a lock. Our rack is realy old. Nothing fancy at all. Perhaps time for an upgrade.

Judy!!!! Awesome job with your cholesterol! Fantastic. I love that Bob is enjoying riding. A year ago I would never have been able to vison this.

Carolyn...yes I am one of those people that perfers 2 over 1. You are really doing great with this program. I loved WW when I used it in the begining of the year. Did not have any issues.

Diane Sue....I have never used My Fitness Pal. My son and his GF uses it and love it.

Have a great night all!!!

Good morning,

Yesterday I did the Upper Body only premix from S&S Total Body Giant Sets.

Diane Sue, lots of times I will be with Kylee in the car coming back from class and I will get the Fuji Apple salad at Panera in the drive through. :). I do not like how MFP app works...it is not as easy to enter food as it is on the regular web site.

Valerie, John and I have this on-going argument about what the difference is between "bees". "hornets". "yellow-jackets", "wasps" and "bumble bees"... When I was a kid, there were 2 things: bees and wasps. Bees were anything that was round and had some kind of yellow body, a wasp was the shiny all black flying thing. :) I have never tried a spiralizer, have been wanting to but know that John would probably not eat anything I did.

Carolyn, you are doing great with STS....it seems like everyone here enjoys Meso 2. Thanks for the info on the sauces. I will look those up.

Judy, great news on the cholesterol number!

Lori, safe travels, and hope all goes well at the conference. Keegan is doing well. I have a vet appointment for him on Tuesday to check his thyroid numbers with the new lower dose he has been on.

Agility class this morning,,,,

Have a great weekend!

Lori an old rack that works is probably fine and not a big target for thieves. we go a lot of places with our somewhat expensive bikes on the rack and have to leave them sitting on the rack. it gets more important the longer they sit.
I mainly meant that a bike locked to a rack is not secure... if the rack itself can be easily snatched. there go both! really, thieves can get most things if they're really motivated. if your set up looks like too much work, they likely will look elsewhere. our old rack was held by the edges of the tailgate and we never had a problem. our new one is hitch mounted , and the rack itself was pretty expensive. just got it on sale but a thule about $500. we needed a heavier duty one to take mt bikes to Montana. it locks to the hitch itself. someone could probably get it but would destroy the rack in the process. we are stuck with a lot of meth heads and tweakers and they steal anything that isn't nailed down. Have a good trip wow, out the door by 3:15.

Carolyn I used the bar code scanner when I could but it did not work with so many products I was disappointed. never works at Costco. it seemed to not cover a lot of regular grocery store products. I though maybe different brands on the west coast? It worked so seldom I quit using it. I would guess it recognized maybe 10% of the items I scanned. plus I do almost exclusively "from scratch cooking" and so end up entering a lot of data. older recipes with nutritional info often did not have sugars or fiber listed so that was a guess. I may give WW another try.

Deb I had no idea Panera had a drive thru. I never noticed one and I know there are several panera s nearby.
I don't know the specific difference between all those insects either. bald faced hornets are common out here, as are yellowjackets. I will take a look later today when I have more time. YJ's are often aggressive and now I know I am sensitive to their venom. leg is almost normal today, still itching a little.

I made the Asian chicken salad for dinner last night . made half a recipe of dressing and only used half of it for two dinner salads. so even if there is sugar in it, the quantity is small. rice wine vinegar comes plain and seasoned, be sure to use the plain version for this.

Today I did Party Rocking Step 2 for 46 minutes and 336 calories. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 145. I went to the hair salon this morning and now I'm relaxing with Sue Grafton's latest book.

After talking about the pumpkin pasta sauce I decided to make it for dinner tonight.

Lori, good luck with your conference. It's wonderful that your son will be there and helping out. I'm sure that you will get in plenty of walking even if you can't fit in a formal workout.

Valerie, I am a cook from scratch person also but I use the scanner occasionally. It is pretty extensive. I don't enter full recipes unless it's something I bake. I usually log individual ingredients. That Asian salad sounds yummy.

Diane Sue, I like the idea of draining the excess water from spiralized zucchini.

Judy, what are you doing in place of STS legs?

Hello to Deb.

Carolyn-last week I did XTrain Bonus Barre and Jessica Smith's Barre Burn & Floor Barre for legs. It's definitely not the same as STS Legs, and I miss doing the weighted leg workouts, but my low back feels so much better now. I'm going to continue with Barre and floor work and I may try 4 DS Legs next week too. That workout seems to be a little easier on my low back than others.

Today's workout was X Train Cardio Legs, 56 minutes, 357 calories, heart rate average 122, max 159, 3,063 steps followed by core #2, 13 minutes, 50 calories, 201 steps. Total time 69 minutes, 407 calories.
I also did 20 minutes of therapy for neck and shoulders using Yoga Tune Up upper body. I started writing up what I wanted to do next week and for some reason I have a dread of it. Maybe I should just do what I feel like doing. I keep eyeing KCM which I have recently enjoyed. Tomorrow is my rest day. The plan was:
Monday X TrainSuper Cuts
Tuesday X Train Burn Sets Biceps and Triceps
Wednesday X Train Tabatacise with core #2
Thursday X Train Burn Sets Chest, Back,Shoulders
Friday X Train legs
Saturday cardio, undecided but thinking maybe Ice Low Impact Sweat with the Blizzard Blast and Ice abs
Maybe it is just X train. I have done these workouts a lot.

Lori, I have used My Fitness Pal so long it has workouts under exercises that I have not had in years. I have deleted some of them though. Leaving at 3:15 am is too early. I would be a zombie wandering around.

Deb, I almost always use the MFP app on my tablet. When I go to it on the computer I have to find where to click. I guess I am just used to the app. I did have to go online to make adjustments in settings so that it did not take my exercise calories away as it counted my steps. Something about MFP tracks expected calories and adjusts at the end of the day and Fit Bit is an all day syncing app. It confused things too much and it didn't make me happy when I would exercise and burn 400 calories and come back and have something like 20 calories as it took off calories on MFP. I had to go look it up and figure out what the problem was. I almost always put a half of a pink lady apple or a honey crisp in my salad. Most of the time it is a k lady though.

Valerie, Panera did not use to have drive through here. They built some new ones with a drive through. More recently, one of the older ones moved up the street to a new store and has the drive through. Usually when I look at the drive through at the closest one, there is a line at lunch time. It is easier to park and go inside. I only go if I have a lunch with a friend. We have a new place called Salata around the corner that is all build your own salad so you pick everything yourself from the bar and choose proteins if you want them. They also have the salad in a wrap option and several soups. I have yet to go as it would not be a place my husband would like. It is a lot like Cool Greens which was a place my youngest daughter and I used to go to a lot when both of our husbands were in Afghanistan. I make most of my stuff from scratch too and it is quite difficult entering all of the data into those nutrition calculators. Yes, older recipes do not usually show sugars and cholestral and things you might want to monitor for accuracy. I used to buy the seasoned rice wine vinegar and just use only that on my salads. I like the taste. I do have some plain on hand though. It looks like I have most of the ingredients for the salad. I just need wontons and mandarin oranges. I used to use those all of the time too for salads. Thanks for the recipe. I printed it off. I hope the swelling has gone the rest of the way down.

Carolyn, I love Party Rock'n step. I know I keep saying that, but it really is a favorite of mine :) It sounds like you are having a relaxing day. I used to read Sue Grafton books. I used to read all of the time, but my reading turned more to information and studies and I just don't sit down and read a novel just for fun. I had sort of a relaxed morning myself. I soaked in the tub and used a 100% pure moisture mask this morning with a conditioner pack on my head. That was my relaxed moments :) I need to go outside and mow. That will break the relaxing. I was reading a post on Pinterest about the spiralized zucchini noodles and it also suggested that you put a bowl or something on top of it to sort of weigh it down while it is sweating out the water. The person that said this said if you want to get rid of some of the salt just rinse it lightly and dry it off some. Doing this really does make a difference.

There are lots of versions of "Asian chicken salad". the 2 restaurants we eat at most have them. that was why I started looking for a home version. we asked what they used for dressing and it was a commercial one but not available in consumer size packaging. think it was a gallon? I would prefer a thicker dressing so I will look further and try some others but this is simple and tasty.
I have another salad with rice vinegar that I made for lunch today. it's sweet and tangy watermelon salad, an old recipe from Eating Well Mag. I'll put in a link if they still have it on their web site. it's many years old. not a main dish salad but goes nicely with so many things, very easy to toss together. you may not think cucumber and watermelon go together, but they do.

we had a home owner meeting this morning and a birthday party this afternoon so quite a full day.

http://www.eatingwell.com/recipe/248716/sweet-tangy-watermelon-salad/
this is so easy and so good. does not last real well so make what you will eat, or be prepared to drain off liquid. this is as good as the watermelon and cucumbers you use. DH doesn't like cilantro but good without it too. the only things I adjust are dry roast salted peanuts and seasoned rice vinegar. I like bigger chunks rather than diced.
