Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/10

Good morning,

Yesterday I did a premix from X-train All Out Low Impact, cardio & abs. The abs were tough.

Judy, good job on STS! Yes, the time goes by so quickly, it's amazing that it has been 4 years already.

Carolyn, wow..that was a long time without power....Good that you didn't have that much damage.

Lori, it sounds like your conference will be going on....as long as the airports are good. I bet they are crowded with people trying to get back home to Fla.

Diane Sue, which dog treats did you make? I have been making the ones with just flour, oatmeal and baby food. Keegan is still not supposed to have anything commercial. I am with you...I prefer a DVD, or one of the Live workouts to a paper one. I used to do the Bill Phillips workouts religiously, from his book, but now I feel I need someone to lead me.

Valerie, that's horrible about the nest and you getting stung. I hope it is better today.

A workout, then a follow up DR appointment and agility class tonight....

Take care,

Today was D14 Legs for 57 minutes for 214 calories burned. Average heart rate was 102 and maximum heart rate was 146.

Yes, we were very fortunate over all. There are many people in Atlanta still without power and the schools are closed again today. There are so many trees and power lines down. These recent weather events will effect people throughout the southeast for years to come.

Lori, a belated happy birthday to you. Today is my birthday. I didn't realize that we were so close together in dates (not age!!).

I have never been very good with following a paper workout program. I need the enthusiasm from the trainer to help with my motivation. Yesterday I started to do Low Impact Sweat using the printed page from the manual but couldn't make myself do it. I do like to use the format from some written workouts to plan what I want to do. I often use Cathe's rotations that way.

Hello to everyone. Enjoy your day.

I'm here but pretty uncomfortable. I had quite a reaction to the sting. my lower leg and ankle are swollen and itchy, taking bendryl, using a topical anti itch lotion. leg elevated. on ice pack. I never reacted this strongly before. not sure I can do anything much today, I can't sit all day so I will keep up the benadryl etc. I took Benadryl yesterday not long after it happened but because I was hiking, I guess the venom perfused. I don't think I scratched it last night but it is hard to remember what you did while asleep. it does not look scratched but is red and somewhat swollen. it is lower calf, upper ankle, right about the sock line. I got one sting for sure, but maybe more in the same area. when I stopped running there were a couple yellow jackets on my leg, so might have gotten multiple stings close together. it happened so fast, and I ran up the trail to get away as fast as I could. crap.
carolyn glad to hear you are powered up again. we also have a lot of trees and it is worrisome in big windstorms.

Deb, do you have High Reps? I really like the ab workout on that one. I tried the one from S&S but didn't care for it. it has a bunch of those "kick thru" moves where you lean on one arm shoulder. I am leery of those after my shoulder injury. never knew for sure what was the cause, and those place a lot of stress one shoulder. I don't "get" the move very well, and not risking another shoulder problem when there are other choices

Today I did X Train ALL Out Low Impact Hiit , 40 minutes, heart rate average 137, max 162, 280 calories, followed by Ice Low Impact Sweat Blizzard Blast, 13 minutes, average heart rate 139-max 159, 106 calories, 1,017 steps. I wanted some stretching so I did Kelly Coffey's Body Design Yoga Flow, 13 minutes, 34 calories. Total time was 65 minutes, 420 calories. Today I s our family evening dinner at my house. I am making spaghetti and will either use some spaghetti squash I have in the freezer for myself or just eat salad. I am not a real fan of tomato based sauce on spaghetti squash. This was last minute, since we didn't do this during the summer vacation months. I just chose something easy and that I had most of the ingredients for. I also mixed up some Nutella chocolate chip cookies for company :) I am going to have to find a time to take my car in. I am having problems with the automatic security system that has to match my car key. It will periodically show the symbol and it wont go out. My car wont start for the first few tries. It is under warranty till November and only has 10,000 miles on it. It is either the system or my key. I wish they didn't put those automatic things in cars that can go wrong. I would rather have the press the button security system or something.

Valerie, that sting sounds bad. I am sure it probably did not help since you were still moving on foot. You are right, the venom probably spread more. I hope it improves quickly, it sounds miserable. I try not to choose the workouts with the kick throughs and side plank leg lifts where you rest on one extended arm if my shoulders and neck are bothering me. It does make it worse.

Deb, which X Train ab workout was that one? I did #1 yesterday. It has been long enough since I did it that I forgot what the format of those were. I wouldn't recommend the treats we made. The recipe came from a book that my granddaughter 9 purchased about dogs and dog care and training. It was so far off on the ingredients. We had to ad almost twice as much flour and it called for crazy ingredients like a full cup of peanut butter and a cup of milk. It looked like pancake batter and I had to work at improvising to get them to bake into treats. I had her lower the peanut butter amount and use part water in them. I told her we would find another one next time. She spends her money and time on her little doggie that loves her so much. She loves pets. I just had a book held for her at the library and took it to her. She also had the librarian help her find a book called shelter dogs that she really wanted. I have seen recipes for treats that call for just baby food. I am still afraid to switch too may things on Gertie so have stuck with the rice flour. She does have an occasional Blue Basics grain free salmon and potato treat. I use those in my workout room so it is usually limited to one a day. I really should have looked at her recipe better and I would have known that it was not going to work. Maybe you can give me the one you make and I can give her that one to make for Muffin. I have multiple books here that I have tried to follow and I just am not that motivated doing them. I like music and someone talking so that I push myself harder.

Carolyn, when we had the high winds that was like a tornado,(not sure what the called it) the power lines were down and it was over 100 degrees and humid and hot. The power was out for 3 days. Fortunately I only had to spend one day and night at home without power. Once they got the power lines up I had help getting the generator to the house from the shed and set up for the refrigerator and I went to my daughter's that had power and spent the day with air. My son lived a few miles away and theirs was out longer than mine. I am glad that you did not have to be without too long.

Here is the link to the recipe I use for the 2 ingredient dog treats. You can use any flour that you choose, same with the baby food, as long as it is the strained variety, not toddler, no onions etc...(which you already know!).

I use a mix of oatmeal and flour, and have used only 1- 4 oz jar or 2- 2.5 oz jars. When I used the 2-4 oz jars that the recipe calls for, it was too moist, would not roll out at all. I had to add a lot more flour, so I reduced the baby food amount. I don;t use cookie cutters, just use a pizza slicer and cut them into 3 x 1 inch bar type shapes.

Good evening ladies!

This morning I decided to take GiGi for a run. We went out on the road and she did very well. Hardly any cars that early so she wasn't lunging at them. We went 2.5 miles. Going to try and do this as much as possible. Was going to bounce tonight but my husband wanted to go for a little bike ride so we went 3.5 miles. And this was perfect for him. My husband never really biked outdoors before so this is all new to him. I realy enjoyed it and he is getting great exercise! We are going to the Cape for Columbus weekend and he wants to bring the bikes. I love this!

Happy Birthday Carolyn!! Hope you had a great day. I just received notification from Amtrak that due to severe weather the train one of our Area Director's is taking to the conference is cancelled with no alternatives. He lives in Maryland and there must be damage to the tracks somewhere along the route. He does not fly so looks like he will miss it.

Valerie!! Ouch!! That stings sounds terrible. Hope you get relief soon.

Diane Sue...I started reviewing the Ice workouts again and going to try and fit some premixes in here and there. Technology is good but sometimes when it faulters you are in a jam! Very fustrating. Awesome having a family dinner. Sounds like a fun time!

Deb...Nice workout. You are doing awesome! On our CEO's weekly call to our managers I asked him to stress to everyone not to miss your flight because there will not be another!!! Yes, everyone now is trying to get in after being evacuated or cancelled flights. I really hope I make it there. I am flying with my coworker that helps me and if we do not make it...it would be ugly!!!!

Have a good night all!

Deb, thanks. I have found that some of the broth I have purchased has garlic and onion in it. I have to read labels carefully. This looks good.

Carolyn, I think I missed telling you Happy Birthday :)

Lori, I am sure that you can find some premixes that will work perfectly for you from the Ice series.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday.

Carolyn, Happy Birthday!

Valerie, it does sound like you had multiple bites. I hope you get some relief soon. I believe I do have High Reps. I should pull that out and try it again.

Diane Sue, funny, we did the same X-Train workout...I like the All Out Low Impact. it was Time Saver premix #7:
"Floor Cardio + Core 1." John does not like any tomato sauce on spaghetti squash either. I keep thinking I should make it with a pesto sauce, but forget to buy one.

Lori, that's great that Gigi is running with you on a regular road etc. Nice that you went for a bike ride...I need to do that before the snow files. I think the ICE and S&S are my favorite Cathe series.

Judy, how is your back feeling?

Take care,

I did not get much sleep. Back to doughing and allergies after Saturday's outing. Today i will be outside a lot again. I do not like the new Cathe page. I had to go through the internet to find the forums. I dont like Tapatalk either. Today will be Pyramid upper and abs. I just have to drag myself upstairs.

Deb, i did the floor cardio to All our low impact hiit so many times after knee surgery. Itv has taken awhile to want to do it again. It is a good workout. At first I could not do step and d ometimes the discs had too much pivoting. I had to find non jumping, climbing, and twisting the knee around with pivoting workouts. That workout was one of a few for awhile.

Happy. Birthday from me too Carolyn.

Yes what is up with the new page? It sure is weird and unlike Cathe's usual I will look again when I get on the desktop. Diane sue I agree I thought I'd gone to the wrong site.

My leg is getting better but still very uncomfortable. It got extremely itchy and swollen. I tried to elevate and ice it and took maximum Benadryl and Advil. Could not wear jeans. They were too tight. I tried to walk a lot but nothing more intense was way too uncomfortable. My calf muscle gott very sore on that side. Very strong reaction. If this ever happens again I will cut my hike short.

I just wanted to mention that I just pulled up Cathe's page with Internet Explorer and it is working fine and has the social setting for forums etc.. Maybe it is Google Chrome. That is where I looked earlier.

Valerie, that does sound like multiple bites. I have never swollen up from a sting before.

That is why I always use the Cathe web version site on my desktop to post. I also use the web version when accessing on my phone for the Live workouts. Same with MyFitnessPal. Hate the app. The web version will not even launch on the iPad...they try to force you to use their app. NOT!

this is weird.. the pics on the web site look like cathe now. yesterday something popped up of a non athletic looking woman with multiple strings of pearls or something? Did any one else see that? thought I'd clicked wrong, went to the forums via an email link. so I didn't look closely. maybe there was some kind of temporary page while the new ones were being set up?

I think I got multiple stings in the same spot. it happened in seconds. when I saw bees swarming out of a tiny hole in the dirt, I ran uphill ...not fast enough. DH knocked 2 YJ's off the back of my leg. when I kept hiking, it diffused & dispersed the venom to my entire leg. the swelling is slumping downward and now my foot is swollen. my calf is down an inch from last night. luckily can get a shoe on. this is a very strong reaction. Next time I get stung will stop doing anything physical if possible. this is not a systemic reaction where I'd need epinephrine (epi pen). DH went to mt bike this morning but I am too uncomfortable, plus any further injury to my left leg might cause skin problems. the skin is very tight where it is swollen, and getting purple bruise marks around my ankle. it still itches like crazy but less than yesterday. I might be able to road bike tomorrow today will stick to walking.

diane sue, I never swelled before. stung on a bike ride in Idaho 2 years ago but it was at the very end of the ride. 2 minutes to our truck. those stings became raised red patches on my upper thigh but nothing remotely like this. I suspect those were yellow jackets but never saw them.

Lori we take either mt bikes or road bikes on almost all trips. we always find a use for them. if you take bikes along, make sure you lock them to the bike rack and that the rack itself is locked to your car. bikes are popular with thieves.

Today I did X Train All Out Low Impact HiiT and Abs 1. This must be the week for us with that workout. Time was 50 minutes and 348 calories. Average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate was 168. I didn't remember the abs workout but it was a little hard for me.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. I had a wonderful day and received a few gift cards from family. One of my nieces sent me a text which was very surprising.

I didn't have any problems with the Cathe website today but I saw on Facebook that they had some issues with it initially. I always use the internet to access the forums because I didn't like the app.

Valerie, it definitely sounds like you had multiple stings if the swelling is more than usual. It's probably a good idea to take it easy today.

Hello to All and have a wonderful afternoon.

Today I had Pyramid Upper body with the abs on my plan. Workout was 61 minutes, 252 calories, heart rate 100 average, 145 max. 708 steps. Not much foot work LOL. Probably me running around to get weights and write stuff down. I have not done this one in years. We went to the State Fair after my workout and I got in 8,337 steps walking around the exhibits. We didn't eat there though. I was so hungry when I got home since we did not eat before we left and it was almost 2 o'clock. I got a salad from MacDonalds. It was not good. The chicken was slimy and there was some hard something in it that I had to spit out because I couldn't even bite into it. I won't be eating a salad from there again for awhile. I had quit getting them for a long time and would opt to eat at home when we stopped because the chicken was slimy and fatty or something.
weights were: 12,10,8,10,12 reps each exercise.
chest flys 12,15,17.5,15,12 2dbs
chest press 12,15,17.5,15,12
pullovers 20,25,30,25,20
double arm row 20,25,30,25,20
rear delt fly 8,10,12,10,8 2 dbs
side lateral raise 8,10,12,10,8 2 dbs
front raise 8,10,10,10,8 2 dbs
double arm kickbacks 12,12,15,12,12
seated overhead extension 1 dumbbell 15, 20,25,20,15
hammer curls 12,15,17.5,15,12 2 dbs
curls 12,15,17.5,15,12 dbs

Valerie, you must have been stung a lot of times to react so badly. Maybe it would have been a head start on the reaction? I did not see that picture on Cathe's. I just got on and there was no place to get on the forums etc.. It was just all sales stuff. I went to a link on my cell phone for just forums and got on here that way. Later when I used IE instead of Chrome upstairs the page was fixed so there were links. Now my usual link is back to working that I have set up so I just go straight here.

Deb, I use the web version for Cathe on my Samsung Tablet, cell phone, and laptop. I have the Tapatalk app but do not like using it. I have no problem with MFP on my tablet and phone. I have used it on my devices for years. It has been a long time since I have used it on an ipad though.

Carolyn, nice work on All Out Low Impact Hiit. I always enjoy spending my gift cards.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was a 2.38 mile run with GiGi then did a quick barre workout. No workout tonight. I need to color my hair and start organizing for my trip.

Carolyn...I have not noticed anything different with this page. I usually always use my Ipad and do not use the tapatalk app either. I hve saved to my home page Cathe.com and that works fine for me. Hope you are feeling better. Oh those salads are horrible! I tried them a couple of times and stopped buying them.

Valerie...glad your leg is improving. It sounded really bad. That is exactly what I told my husband. We need a good lock for the bike rack. My Fuji is about 20 years old and is still fine for me. My husband bought a trek and he could not be happier. I could not ride with him tonight so he went off on his own. That is unheard of for him.

Deb...Im going to do some Ice workouts and Fit Tower when I come back from my conference. Looking forward to it.

Carolyn...I now feel I should do the all out low impact workout!

Lori, I bet Gigi is loving the runs. I usually can get something done while color is on my hair, but the new one I started using requires me to stand with a cap on my head and a blow dryer for the first 10 minutes to help the color take. I wish I didn't have to do that, but I guess it protects my hair and scalp more since it has a lot less unsafe chemicals in it. I hope things go well for the conference and your trip.

Lori we don't leave our bikes unguarded if we stop to use a restroom. we go in one at a time. I don't think I live in "crime central", but bikes are easily ripped off. I have two Treks. I am a short woman and their sizing fits me. DH has a Specialized and a Trek. I am careful about not leaving it unlocked as we are overrun with meth heads, tweakers, assorted petty crime people. Drugs? a bike ( or anything that can be sold quickly) will not last if it's not locked. so sad. never used to be this way. I have seen people (riding alone) take their bikes into the bathroom with them! really challenging with a porta potty!. get in the habit of locking it reasonably well and it should be OK. if someone really wants the bike they can defeat most locks but mostly they will move on to an easier target if it's locked

Leg is getting better, down to about 1.5 of normal size. I did High reps upper and core. also some grocery shopping with a bit of walking. still quite swollen and developing purple bruises, scattered. I will not forget what a yellowjacket sting can do. all I remember was a sharp sting in one general spot on the back of my ankle above the boot but it could have been more than one if they hit at the same time. you would not believe my leg!
