Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/9

Today I did JS 40 Minute Mega Burn walk. Total calories burned was 283, average heart rate was 128, and maximum heart rate was 151. I didn't wear my weighted gloves this time so all stats were slightly lower.

Diane Sue, I really like Plateau Buster. I haven't done it in lately, but I used it often when it first came out. You haven't updated your computer operating system to Windows 10?

Deb, I like to keep track of all my weight workouts and I have logs for each workout. I use Cathe's weight as a reference point, but I like to see my progress (or lack of) :).

Hello to all and wishing you a wonderful day.

Diane sue I didn't phrase that right. We don't have our sofa yet. It is big, soft fabric and along with an area rug , we hope it will damp down the echo in the room. The tv is when we are most bothered by the echo. Very hard to understand the audio no matter what we've tried. We never had a problem like this before

Good evening ladies!

No workout this morning. I had an early morning doctors appt. Was going to workout when I got home this afternoon (since I leave at 1pm :) ) but started with house work and washing clothes. So now no housemax for the weekend!

I bought another weighted body bar and it arrived today. I have a 20lb but sometimes you need just a little more so I bought a 25lb one. This will be great for me. If I need to go heavier to 30lb I now can easily add on some ankle weights! I love my 20lb barre and anticipate really using the 25lb just as much.

Valerie...I agree with Diane Sue...light weights are better than nothing. An area rug should help with the warmth and echo for sure!

Deb...Bob bought a recumbent bike a while ago and was really into it. Now not so much and hardly uses it. He will use the eliptical several times a week for about 20 minutes and then some weights. This has been working for him. I never record my weight either. Used to but now I guess what is good for me. If too light or heavy I change right away.

Judy...good thing chris had a colonscopy and had those removed. Wow every three years to repeat. Better to be safe so good they do this.
I agree more strength and less cardio makes sense. I can see how it would be hard to give up spinning since you love it so much. I relate it to me doing barre. I would be devastated if I had to give it up. Glad your back is better.

Carolyn...Flutter kicks are something you need to get used to doing. SB does them in some of her workouts so I had no problem with Cathe doing them. I think I have the JS Mega Burn. Which DVD is that from? Been so long since I have done a JS workout!

Diane Sue...I like reading the detail descriptions of your workouts. Thanks for posting. You seem to have a few of Kelly's dvds. I only have a couple and hardly do them.

Have a great night all!

Valerie, I wonder why the echo? Maybe just not enough stuff in your house yet? I was so happy to get rid of carpet. My dil thought I needed a rug for under my dining table. I wondered why I would want to do that when I finally got rid of the carpet. It is much cleaner without carpet. I did buy a couple of runners though. One for in front of the front door where stuff gets tracked and also it helps when someone steps off the stairs so they don't slip. Then one from the kitchen into the dining area because Gertie dribbles water when she leaves her bowl in the kitchen. Plus, her feet slide while she is trying to sit and shake hands for her cookies. It mainly benefits the dog. I haven't noticed an echo. Even with the surround sound system.

Carolyn, no, I have not upgraded to windows 10. I have windows 7 on my older laptop and 8.1 on my main laptop. My husband just got a new laptop that is Windows 10. I wonder if Windows 10 would even support the laptops that have the dvd/cd drive on them. Everything seems so geared for streaming and downloads. My husband is still having problems with finding things like a PDF reader etc on the new laptop. I don't think I want Windows 10 yet.

Lori, I have most of Kelly's workouts. There are several instructors that I have most of their workouts, Amy Bento Ross, I don't have her Stepletic since I haven't learned all of the choreography on her Step Challenge 5 yet. Most of Tracey Staehle's workouts, but she stopped making new ones or I would probably buy more. I have all of Cathe's except that ab compilation she did from other workouts and one called something about getting ready for a wedding. Then there are many others, but there are certain instructors I liked enough to buy their new stuff when it comes out. I wrote up all of the premixes for the Kelly Plateau Buster dvd since it was not on her website. I notice there are several items missing or only partially there. I already mentioned the Shape Up dvd to her. The body bars are probably nice for ease of just picking up the weight that you want like we do with dumbbells. It is so time consuming having to stop and change weight plates.

We wanted hard floors, have carpet in the master ..... Masterhas no echo. All the others do . I have a few runners down but even with the new fabric blinds, there is an echo. Watching tv is difficult because the sound gets distorted.
Drove home yesterday.... took 12 hrs 45 min. We will go back in a month or so when the sofa is in. Meantime I will look for an area rug . hopefully the rug and sofa will settle it down. We have a high ceiling and bare walls and I am not sure what will help the most.

We also stayed with windows 7. DH has a photo program that won't work in win 10. Might switch to apple after these die

I record weight my first time thru a workout so it's easier the next time . most of the metabolic type workouts , my weight doesn't change much.

I may get a body bar instead a barbell for the new house. Thanks for the reminder Lori. Depends on whether DH wants to do weights there too. We are at sea level here but it's over 5000 feet there. has a big impact on exercise for several days ! Mostly I want a few dvds and minimal weights so I can do "something". On bad weather days .
Judy that is how my colonoscopies went.... dead for the day. My DH has had polyps so is on a faster repeat schedule too

Deb where are you this morning??

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Fit Tower Total Body. I like this one better each time I do it.

Valerie, it sounds like the house is coming along great! I don't think I could ever get John to do a Cathe workout.

Diane Sue, maybe I should choke down that collagen before bed? I am not sure if it is even still good, since it wasn't refrigerated and it smells so awful. Good that you are getting better sleep, maybe after this week's activities you will be sleeping even better. That job sounds really good...not too much time each day and you get off whenever the kids are off so it shouldn't interfere with the times you spend with your grandchildren. I hope you are able to fix the windows 7 issue. Maybe contact Microsoft? They have been really good to me in the past with issues I have had.

Judy, good that Chris's procedure was done when it was. I had polyps removed multiple times, and had to go every 3 years for a while. I think once I had 2 in a row that were polyp free, I am now on the "5 year plan". I don't think I will ever be able to go every 10 year like those that never had polyps. Good your back is better. I want to hear what you think of the FT workouts. Sorry to hear about your friend's daughter.

Carolyn, that JS workout sounds good. Can you do those on a treadmill?

Lori, nice to have the weekend free to do other things besides laundry and HouseMax! I wanted a 20 lb weighted bar, but since I have a few regular BB's. I just set one up to always be at 20#...could not justify buying another one.

No workout today, agility class later this morning. Kylee all of a sudden does not want to sleep in her crate...she stands up, bangs on the door, whines, pants...etc. Not sure what is going on here....after 6 years of sleeping there, all of a sudden she won't...not sure why as nothing has changed.. She is keeping me up all night!

Take care,

Deb-I haven't done Fit Tower Total Body yet. I have that on the schedule for Monday. I'm going to do Bootcamp next week too. I did the Legs & Glutes premix of Legs, Glutes & Core and I really liked it. Very good barre work. I didn't do the core work in this one as it looked like it might bother my low back. I will try it next week. I did the Fit Tower Bonus Abs yesterday and I was surprised that I didn't have to modify at all and it didn't bother my low back. Compared to the Strong & Sweaty Abs, this one is much easier for me.

Valerie-for my colonoscopy I had conscious sedation and didn't get knocked out at all. I still couldn't drive, but I was awake all the rest of the day and able to do things. I remember feeling very relaxed though and I didn't feel like doing a lot.

Judy, i am almost always around 10 minutes longer with workouts that include weights. I try to do the writing it down and changing weights as quicklybas possible. Even if i have done the workout before and feel i am set up well to start, it ends up taking more time. I saw the bonypus buster on that workout and had to try it. She does not have the moves written down on her worksheet.

Valerie, i bet wgen you get the couch in and an area rug it will help the echo. We have high ceilings in our house as well. The only thing i notice is when someone is walking around and Gerties claws as she walks.

Deb, i checked out their other collagen powders and i dont even see any with a label that just says type II chicken collagen on them. I wonder if they were getting rid of that product. I have noticed since i ran out of the bone broth protein powder which has other types of collagen in it and am just taking thiis type II that my fingers are getting caught once in awhile. I think the multiple variety of bovine and chicken works better. But, it does seem to help the sleep. I was so tired last night that i slept 7 hrs 25 minutes. This is great for me. I am surprised because i had several messenger messages from my family in Nebraska to getbto when i got home at almost 10 last night. Plus my daughter asked me to keep my grandson 3 days instead of the usual 1.

that is correct.. if you have a clear scoping they will probably extend the time you can go between screenings. it depends a little on what kind of polyp too. some are benign, others could become malignant. they can't tell for sure just by looking at them, so polyps go to pathology for final word. I am on 10 year plan. my colon is so twisted they use a pediatric scope, knock me out totally. I've had two clear procedures and no family history, so not sure I will go thru another one. possibly one more.
I'm less careful about recording my weights than I used to be. if it feels too light, I go up right away, same with too heavy. I usually write that number in. if I use what cathe uses, I don't record it.

ETA we rode the trail this morning, 15 miles. we rode faster than usual. not busy yet and very pleasant out. saw a load of rabbits and a deer with a little spotted fawn, and two bucks with velvety antlers. we will likely ride again tomorrow. felt good to do something after sitting all day yesterday.

this is out of order... Carolyn, I think the word "aerobics" has a bad connotation. brings up an annoying image of some scrawny woman doing dance-y moves wearing a skimpy outfit and leg warmers. I would not look at anything that said 'aerobics".

Today I did Low Impact Series Step Challenge Extreme, 74 minutes, 509 calories, heart rate avg. 144/ max 177. I then did Strong and Sweaty bonus abs, 13 minutes, 56 calories heart rate 109/146. Total time 87 minutes, 565 calories, 6,814 steps.

No workout for me today. I decided to make this a rest day since I had a 9:00 appointment. I haven't done the FT Total Body yet , but like Judy, I plan to do it Monday.

Deb, the J S workout has the typical low impact moves like side steps, hamstring curls, speed skaters and knee lifts, etc. I don't think you would be able to do it on a treadmill. I think that calling them walks instead of low impact aerobics keeps some people from feeling intimidated and not trying. I am pretty straight forward on the treadmill. I vary the speed and incline levels and length of time and I have created different playlists that I like to use. The only dvd that I have done on the treadmill is KCM's Home Gym Intervals.

Lori, the 40 Minute Mega Burn is in the JS 30 Day Plan.

Have a wonderful afternoon everyone.

Good afternoon all!

This morning was Legs & Glutes. I skipped the core because I only had an hour and wanted to do an Urban Rebound workout I bought on ebay. Total time was 55mins/ 330 cal

Diane Sue...For $5 I bought an older urban workout called Power Burn. It is very dated and thought I would love it. It began great and I was enjoying it then 1/2 way through I realized the few moves were the same. Over and over! It was 5 or 6 moves he does in a set then the set repeats over and over. I got bored very quickly!!! I made a digital copy so going to shorten it and use as a quick add on. I also bought Bounce & Burn Max which says it is advanced. I am converting now so will see in a few if it is something I will like. If anything I will be able to make up something and use as an add on. I do not have room any more for a barbell and never really used it when I did have room so a weighted bar works great for me and it works better every now and then.

Valerie...I bought my bar on Amazon. Here is the link. Thought it was a good price.

Judy...The Total Body is my favorite of the three. That is up for tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. :). I love the core work in this series. It is tough but enjoyable, different and actually fun for me. No dread factor at all.

Deb...I am still trying to get Bob to do a Cathe Workout with me!!!! I do not blame you for not getting a 20lb bar. I never really liked using a barbell and always perferred dumbbells. I like using the weighted bar though so this makes no sense to me!

Carolyn...that makes sense about JS's walks. Never understood why they were considered walks!!!

Have a great night all!

Carolyn, Home Gym Intervals is probably my favorite workout to use for the spin bike and Tread Climber. I can push myself and get off for some weights.

Lori, I have 3 of the Urban Rebounding compilation dvds. They are dated, but there are a few workouts that I like on them. 2 came with my rebounder when I got the set with URX-MT. The workouts on the compilations are short. I like compilation 2 which has a Dance Bound workout that is 31 minutes and sort of fun. Compilation #3 has Kick bound which is 23 minutes with the same instructor as Dance Bound that I liked. It seems I liked the Latin Bound one as well. I guess I need to pull them out again. I wonder if they have any of those on You Tube> I didn't care too much for compilation 1.
