Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/3

Valerie...I just asked and it is lanolin that was in the shampoos and soap he used and PPD (Paraphenylenediamine) from his hair dye. (Yup he colors his hair. Shhh! He would die if he knew I just told you all this! Many men do but he likes to keep it quite!). We now buy PPD free hair coloring and he uses an organic cetaphil shampoo/body wash we buy on Amazon. Absolutley no issues after he made these changes.

I'll come back later today to post my workout.

Just a quick check in before we go to breakfast. I'll check in later too.

Diane Sue-yes, there are cardio blasts in Chiseled Lower Body. It reminds me of XTrain Cardio Leg Blast. I'm going to add the blizzard blast next time.

Deb-yes, I am enjoying the ICE workouts. I feel like I can start adding the blizzard blasts and doing some of the longer premixes now. It is a great series. You can make it as easy or hard as you want. The only thing I don't like as much are the core workouts, and I wish there was a muscle meltdown for legs.

Valerie-I switched the type of color I was using on my hair a few months ago when it started bothering me. I told my hair stylist and she said they had a less harsh product they could use. I don't know the ingredient that was in the harsh one, but it was probably the one that Lorie mentioned. I haven't had any problems since switching.
I hope you feel better and are able to ride tomorrow.

Valerie I get itchy with a lot of the hair products that have polymers in the ingredient list. Some of them like heat protectors leave my neck and shoulders itchy when I just put it on the ends. Maybe a search for limited ingredient hair products? I think 100% pure sells hair products. I have been using their eye cream and a night moisturizer and finally have no itchy red patches :D

Deb, my youngest grandson Micah is 2 years old. You can be putting up one mess and he is finding another one. He minds when you tell him no and will put things back, but he is always discovering. I was picking up and came back trying to see where he went and he had our portable dvd player with the plug trying to plug it in behind his Papa's chair.

Hi Lori,

Can you post a link to the brand of hair dye you buy that is PPD free? My cousin has terrible reactions to hair dye, sometimes she breaks out in hives when she colors her hair....thanks!

Hi Deb, Josie, Diane Sue, Valerie and all the wonderful ladies here. I must be insane because did almost all of the Blast Challenge with the two pound weighted gloves. I had to look here again, and today has to be a rest day. I must have some tendencies to be a hypochondriac as I was lying in bed last night, and thinking that my illiotibial band hurt, and my triceps already had Doms, I also had an Icy Hot sleeve on my right knee. I have the Cathe Calendar, but I am not even using it, but I look here to keep track of my workouts. Maybe I should also post in the Hardcore Fitness Maniac check in. In the summer, everything makes me itchy, and I take allergy pills all the time. My kids are much too immature to make me a grandmother yet.

wow I didn't realize hair color was such an irritant. or shampoo!. I am thinking more that might be it. I had used 6 week hair color and only the last time used a permanent color. didn't notice anything at the time and my head is maybe a little itchy but nothing like my back. I'll look for other shampoo meantime. for me, when one thing itches, it seems to make everything else itchy too. My muscle pull discomfort is 99% gone.
deb I did rock'em sock em . there is a lot of fast arm movement with all the punching moves, so it could have been one of many things. the move I suspect is.... holding arms at 90 degree angle, rotating back and forth, while raising alternate knees. I thought she called it the washing machine move. that's what I suspect at this point. I won't avoid , will just be more careful.

Lori thank you for the ingredient. (I won't tell on your husband either!) I don't use much on my hair, plain Pantene V shampoo. no conditioner. I use a tiny dab of an anti frizz lotion after my hair is drying, so no skin contact. a garnier fructis product. hair color at a salon every 6 weeks or so. plain Dove soap. this has been a problem for at least a year. the next time I wash my hair I will do it either in the sink or on my knees in the shower so I don't have it streaming down my back. that is where I'm itchy. if it were spandex I would expect I'd be having problems elsewhere, such as elastic along panty lines etc. looking at shampoo ingredients is a lesson in chemistry! 15 syllable words. no lanolin in it unless there is another name for lanolin. PPD is, I expect, just in hair color. I don't use hair spray or mousse, nothing else. I keep it simple. will look later for a simpler shampoo. This has been a looong drawn out process.

ETA just back from a mt bike ride. 2 hrs 20 min. It's been wet lately, and it was a muddy mess. we ended up staying more on roads as trails were quagmires in places. riding is SO much easier when surface is harder.. soft dirt. your tires sink in and it's twice as much work. some spots were too mushy to ride thru.

Today I started with Ice Bootcamp Circuit scrambled mix 1 with blizzard blasts mixed 57 minutes, 345 calories. Avg. hr. 115/ 146 max. I used heavier weights for things that did not involve upper body. I then did Ice Low Impact Sweat Blizzard blast 11 minutes, 88 calories, 133 avg./ 154 max heart rate, finished off with Kelly Coffey Slim Sculpting Core Abs Mix 31 minutes, 151 calories. I used a 20# kettlebell for most of this workout. Total time was 99 minutes and calories burned 583. I will return in awhile. I do not like typing on this computer upstairs. It frustrates me when I have to keep editing.

I had to make a run to Walmart for computer ink and floodlight bulbs. I do not like going to Walmart and particularly on Saturdays. I think the companies make all of their money off of the ink cartridges and not the printers . I rinsed my haircolor out in the bath tub once while kneeling outside the tub. I rinsed it a bit and then took my bath. I learned fast how irritating the ingredients can be when I got in my bathwater. I did not get it rinsed well enough and ended up with an itchy stinging rash . I imagine it is much worse on the scalp full strength and if I shaved my head I would see just how bad it is. I have used Herb a Tint and Nature tint hair color before and not had a reaction. Usually I have to get it at a store like Sprouts, or Whole foods. They sell on Amazon. My only problem was my hair color tended to get darker each time I used it. It left my hair nice though. Herb a tint is brush on and Nature tint is applied with a bottle like most colors. I think the same company makes them both. There is another I saw at Sprouts but I have not tried it. I usually use Schwartzkof Keretin from Walmart. My hair seems to stay in better shape than with a lot of the color brands. I am tempted to try the other one that Sprouts carries.
I did see some safer shampoos doing a search that do not have a lot of the irritants in them like parabens and sulphates. It seems Acure Organics, and Hugo had the best review. I had talked to my daughter about soaps once and she said soap is not necessary. It was sort of funny because my younger daughter was telling her son he needed to use the soap, just ask your aunt Crystal. I sitting behind him shaking my head no, do not ask aunt Crystal. I have read that it helps if we get rid of the idea that everything needs to really lather to clean. I still have a hard time with the idea of washing dishes by hand and not having so much lather with more natural dish soap. The same goes with making my own liquid soap using castile soap and essential oils.

Lori, I think that lanolin can often be an irritant. I wonder if PPD is a paraben. I get a lot of my shower gels and my face wash from Sprouts with organic ingredients and not containing a lot of the irritating ingredients.

Caitlin, I never did feel like those icy hot things worked very well. Just plain old ice works best for me. I think heat is supposed to come after you have iced for awhile. It just speeds the healing on. At least that was always my understanding. I put my workouts on the workout manager. If it is not a Cathe workout I put it in other on the dvds or go to the individual workouts like cardio, kettlebell, core, weights. That way I can just look at the calendar. I also have them all logged in my Lilly Pulitzer agenda book. I carry that with me everywhere. Oddly the workout manager has the Ice workouts in their list of dvds but they do not show up on the calendar yet when I add them. I am on the Hardcore Maniacs myself. I have 3 check ins I go to.

Valerie, my hair is long enough that it hangs to where my back is the itchiest . I would imagine when I get sweaty and my shirt is not covering all of my back that it irritates it. Quite often I put on a tank top in the evenings so more of my back is bare. I think Dove still has a lot of additives and fragrance. Maybe a baby soap bar or ivory would be better. I use Cetaphil cream as a body cream and sometimes a Veggie Tales children's lavender lotion that I bought for my grandson but discovered it had pretty safe ingredients. Maybe even some of the children's hair care products would be better. A muddy ride would be interesting. It does sound like a lot of work.

I guess I need to go give Gertie her shower. I waited a couple of extra days because she seemed to be not feeling well. Why is it dogs eat grass and vomit. She always goes to the back corner by the shed where I cannot see her from the window. If she does not come back quickly I go out and stop her because she will come right back in and it ends up all over the carpet. She seems better now and is back to eating like normal. My other dog did not have that issue very often and when she got sick she would do it at the door if she couldn't get your attention to go out. I wish Gertie would do it there. We have tile there.

The PPD is actually worse than the ammonia. I can't put any color on my hair unless I cover it completely with the Gold Bond anti itch stuff. I think I am going to do some lame hi low today and my lower body. I did buy the iron pills, and they already messed with my digestive system. I hope I will be ready for Lower Body Blast soon. I am still alternating between a six and eight inch step. I also completely dislike anything that has a High Step in it now. Thank God, cats clean themselves. Frank is going to get a kitten before I bring Z my long haired cat there. I have a photo of him somewhere in my files. Diane Sue, I use ice, and I only use the Icy Hot thing as a last resort. I also took tons of osteo biflex, and it never did anything. I can't find the photo of Z, and all I did find was some dumb photo of myself in my pink bikini. Cats also eat grass, and I am leaving my 17 year of cat, Felix, with my good friend and neighbor, Bill, as Bill knows a lot about animals, and he said Felix would not survive the trip. I have to be out of here on July 29th. Bill is going to get some guys to help me pack and cart stuff out. The only things I am bringing are my makeup bench and vanity. I just said it, "I am guilty of vanity."

My hair grows very fast, and it was down to my waist, but I had my friend John cut it, and it is a little past the middle of my back. I am supposed to program my new heart rate monitor, and I am not doing it today. I know it would be very lame for me to put a photo of myself in a bikini here.
