Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/15

Deb, I am not sure what criteria are met to be a "good patient". I have decent health habits, get my vaccinations and screenings, checks reasonably close to on time. do my research so I'm informed about health issues. what more could there be? I mostly do what is suggested, at least as a trial. recommended things don't always work but I will try them.

we didn't do anything yesterday. got my hair done, got our replacement refrigerator door installed. it was a warranty repair, but the ice machine stopped working months ago. took a long time for a freezer door replacement.... it's a side by side and it wasn't the ice machine itself, but the wiring to it that failed. something about the internal wiring getting pinched off. not our fault.
today we will do a road ride. it is cooler today. it has been so hot! I don't deal with high temps well. it was 87 yesterday. I start having issues after the upper 70's. there are reasons I live where I do.

Today I did Cathe Live Fit Tower Cardio Legs, 63 minutes, 313 calories, met 4.5, heart rate average 105, max 141, 1,728 steps. This one had a mix of barre, weights, cardio and isolation that they did at the end. My legs were on fire :) That is it. I need to clean house and bathe the dog. My grandson is coming over to mow and take care of my morning glory planter in front. They are creeping out into the driveway and the neighbors drive. It is needed care badly.

Valerie, I just had to replace the ice bin on my refrigerator. I think it is out of warranty now. It started rusting and even though the mechanism was turning it was not pushing out the ice. It cost me 125 dollars to order one. Much less than if I had someone come out and look at it and then charge me for it. I probably could have replaced parts on it, but was not completely sure which ones would need it and so just ordered the whole unit.
I generally listen to the doctor and will try what is suggested most of the time. But, that doesn't mean I will stick with it. I will be honest with them though on my reasoning. I sat in the room waiting for the x-rays and looked up the medicine he sent over to the pharmacy to see what it was and side effects etc. and uses. I also looked up the doctors thoughts on types off arthritis it could be. Fortunately I don't think either of these would be hereditary. Thinking of my family. I like to know what they are talking about when I go in. Also read up on what they usually ask and tests etc. before I went in.

Today I did JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster Walk. I burned 221 calories, had an average heart rate of 132, and a maximum heart rate of 153.

I try to have good health habits too. Like Diane Sue, I try to read up on things before going to a specialist to increase my understanding and to know what questions to ask. I will follow recommendations, but I need to understand the reason for them.

Diane Sue, I’m glad that you were able to get Cathe Live to work. It’s always nice to have new workouts to try.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Carolyn, I think I will enjoy doing Cathe Live for awhile. I think I kept it for 2 or 3 months the last time. I see there are quite a few low impact workouts now. I still am wanting to try Les Mills sometime.

I saw Kelly Coffey has her next workout up today. It is ankle weights for lower and 3# dumbbells for upper work. I will try it one day before the week is over. I don't think my legs would handle it right after today though. I also saw that Amy Bento Ross was taking requests for more youtube workouts. She did not mention rebounding though. I guess she has been gone doing some type of work for awhile. She said it will still be free. It sort of sounded like tentatively free.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, unless you count babysitting for a 3 and 6 year old for 6 hours...LOL..

Diane Sue, You absolutely NEED to get Lori's newest spreadsheet of Live workouts. I could not have LIVE without it. There are so many great workouts to try! My Dr group also has a portal that shows all your test results. It doesn't have the doctor's notes, which would be really good to have. The nurse does all the calling in my primary's office. Cudos to you for watching your grandchildren on a regular basis. I found that by the end of the time, I was starting to lose my patience.

Valerie, by "good patient" I mean consistently doing the things that are supposed to help, like stretching and icing. My SIL sent and email regarding the wedding and mentioned how hot it has been there...in the 90's she said.

Carolyn, great job on that JS workout.

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

Deb, watching young children can be exhausting. They tend to want lots of attention and the 4vyear old has a shorter attention span so we are constantly looking for something new to play with. Oh, and wants me to play. I get lots of steps and floors to say the least. I dont get much else done. When they stayed here for over a week I had him use my cordless vacuum while I used the Kirby, and gave him his own dust cloth. I let him help make cookies by dumping ingredients in the bowl and on the counter. Anyway, I got a few tasks done and aboided him getting into things or annoying his 10 year old sister :) The 7 year old would watch tv all day, but I get him out on library trips, some reading, board games, and crafts.

Today I did Cathe Live Advanced Step Choreography, 51 minutes, heart rate average 145, max 182, 355 calories, 4,681 steps. I took my grandson to a day camp this morning and will be picking him up this afternoon. I had to run errands so am lucky I got in a late workout :) I would like to do Kelly's new toning workout tomorrow and maybe add some cardio. I will have to see how much time I can squeeze out before taking my grandson to camp again. I may be helping my daughter out tomorrow afternoon.

This morning I did High Reps for 65 minutes and 224 calories burned. My average heart rate was 103 and maximum heart rate was 141. I had an eye appointment this morning and they dilated my pupils. I hate it because it takes most of the day for my eyes to return to normal.

Deb, watching young children is hard work! They are so active and require constant attention.

Diane Sue, nice job with the Cathe Live Advanced Step. I like your idea of using the streaming for short periods of time to add variety to your workouts. You can try out a few sites that way. Many sites are free for a few days, but sometimes that isn’t long enough to get a good sample.

Hello to Lori, Judy, and Valerie.

Went on a hard hike today, 5 hrs 45 min. didn't hike the whole time. climbed up high hoping for the fog to clear but it didn't. wanted more glissading. probably 6 miles RT with a lot of elevation gain right at the end. snow and fog are easy to get lost in, so we waited a while but finally gave up and headed down. it did not clear off. still a nice day but not exactly what we'd planned.

Deb, if I don't get results right away, I tend to slack off too. if something works soon after starting, then I am good at keeping it up. it helps me if I record things on a calendar if it's important to keep doing something, like PT.
I am not good with children. I don't want any time with them. doesn't matter who they are. I would never sign up for babysitting basically. no one who knows me would even ask. I've always felt like this and avoid the little monsters.
the "weather people" on TV exaggerate the temps a little. straight factual weather reports are hard to get anymore. it has been warm but not bad unless you are trying to exercise. sleeping was hard a couple nights but most nights it has cooled down and we did not need to turn on the air. It is a bit of a "local sport" to complain about the heat whenever it gets over about 80 degrees. we do not get the stifling humidity that I remember from the Midwest when air from the gulf moved north. that was AWFUL. and Florida was the absolute worst place I ever had to go to..... a hideous place. my hair looked like a brillo pad. it is not as bone dry here as in the rockies either.

Hi Everyone,

My back is a little better this week. Today I did the Pyramid bonus combo. I'm sorry I haven't been posting much. It's been kind of chaotic here with the remodeling. We should have the flooring finished by Monday.

Deb-I think I would count babysitting for 6 hours as a workout, lol!

Valerie-Great job on the hike! I am the same about children. I don't think I would be a very good babysitter.

Carolyn-Nice job with High Reps! That's another one I really like but don't do very often. I hate getting my pupils dilated too.

Diane Sue-I need to get back to doing more Cathe Live workouts. I'm glad you are enjoying them!
Kelly's new toning workout sounds good too.

Hi to Lori!

Good morning,

Yesterday I did 21 Day Fix Upper Body Fix. 33 minutes, 151 calories.

Diane Sue, you are absolutely right, they want me to play with them, when most times when they are with their mother etc, they play alone or with each other. We must have played 8 games of Junior Monopoly. :). I don't mind that, I do mind when they bother each other and start fighting. Good that you got a workout in.

Carolyn, good job on High Reps! That a great workout.

Valerie, that hike sounds tough! Too bad about the fog though. I am okay with babysitting infrequently. I don't think I have the patience to do it on a steady basis though. 80's without humidity sounds wonderful.

Judy, glad your back is better. The Pyramid Combo is a great workout!

Hi to Lori,

My brother and I are taking my uncle who is visiting from Florida to Canada today to Swiss Chalet for lunch. Does anyone have those where you are? We had them here but they all closed so when we get the "urge" to have that food, we have to go to Canada. It is one of my uncle's favorites, and he doesn;t get it in Florida where he is from.

Take care,

Deb- I just looked up Swiss Chalet. The closest one to us is in Windsor, Ontario, about 25 miles away. It looks like a nice restaurant.

It's good comfort food.....not really healthy...LOL...but good for a treat now and then. They are a Canadian company, had a few locations here, but they closed all the US locations.

Today I did Cathe Live Low Impact Cardio Hiit, 36 minutes, met 5.9, 232 calories, 2,703 steps, average heart rate 136, max 174. I used 5# dumbbells. I then did Coffey Fit Raw upper sculpt/ lower tone, 52 minutes, heart rate average 110, max 152, 258 calories, met 4.5, 1,347 steps. This used 3# dumbbells and the site says 10# each leg ankle weights but Kelly says she has 8 on each when she started so that is what I used. She does say later that they could be 10#. I think 8 was enough. This was rounds of boxing moves with dumbbells and leg moves standing and later to the floor. Obviously no jumping. It was pretty active throughout though. I am sure I will feel it. She puts the 3's down during the final punching and squat combo. Total time was 88 minutes, calories burned 484 calories.

Deb, nice that you got in an upper body workout. Yes, when the children are fighting then it is not pleasant. The two I mentioned are far enough apart in ages it is hard to find something to do with both at the same time. We can't sew or something because the 4 year old wants other attention or to mess with things :) I don't think that there is a Swiss Chalet place here.

This morning I decided to try X Train Tabatacise since is in the rotation. I think I mentioned that I have always avoided it and have only done it (Tabata 1) one time. Today I did premix 2, Tabata 1 and 2 plus part of Core 2 for 32 minutes and 194 calories burned. My average heart rate was 124 and maximum heart rate was 152. For me it was similar to Cathe’s other HiiT workouts, but I don’t think I would go beyond 3 segments.

Deb, great job on doing 21 Day Fix Upper Body. I’m not familiar with Swiss Chalet restaurants, but I’m sure you will have a nice time with your uncle. Everything doesn’t have to be healthy. It’s nice to splurge occasionally.

Judy, I’m glad that your back is better. I saw a YouTube clip yesterday where the guy talked about relying too much on the hip flexors when doing ab work and how this causes low back pain. It was a link to Athlean X posted on another forum. He gave good advice and used a foam roller to demonstrate stabilizing the hip flexors. It was very interesting. Pyramid is a nice workout.

Valerie, nice hike yesterday even with the heavy fog.

Hello to Lori and Diane Sue. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Diane Sue it looks like we were posting at the same time. Nice job with Cathe Live Low Impact HiiT and Coffeyfit Upper and Lower body.

Deb good to finally get a workout in. I would do that, skip lower body work until bursitis improves, and do upper and core. we have been riding, hiking, and will do a minor hike tomorrow with cousin so today I will do upper and core. I am a bit sore from yesterday. sections are really steep and slippery, my calves are whining a little. but nothing severe. the bottoms of my feet get sore from friction. we will try to go back on a clearer day. Have you tried riding your bike? when I had bursitis I was able to ride without a problem. didn't affect it at all.

I remember seeing Swiss Chalet restaurants in Canada but never ate at one. when we travel we keep rolling and don't stop for meals. we do sandwiches, snacks, packed from home. tomorrow we will eat out with cousin. neither of us likes restaurants much and would rather cover miles. more of a social event than all about food with cousin and wife

Hi all! Sorry I have not been active here this week. We had our golf outing on Tuesday then Bob went for his colonoscopy on Thursday. Being out 2 days has set me back at work. Just want to say Hello to you all and I will be back on track here this weekend. Have a great night!!!!!

Lori hope for positive news re the colonoscopy for you two.

ended up taking the day off. my legs got more sore than I expected. did the Costco run and some house stuff.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did 21 Day Fix Pilates. 33 minutes, 112 calories. The lunch was nice. It was just my uncle, my brother and myself. My uncle who is 89, was upset because the square dancing place he goes to twice a week while he is here cancelled the square dance because of the heat and no A/C in the place. He is unbelievable.

Diane Sue, nice workouts! How are you liking the Cathe Live so far? I like that she has a lot of short low impact cardio workouts. No, I think because of the company being Canadian, all the US Swiss Chalet restaurants were in border states, if at all.

Carolyn, kudos for doing that Tabata workout!

Valerie, have not tried the bike yet. I should get that out and do it. Good to take a day off if you are having that many DOMS...

Lori, hope all is went well with Bob and the test.

Hi to Judy!

Agility class this morning.

Take care,
