Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/1

Today I did Fit Split Kickboxing only premix. That was 36 minutes and 272 calories burned. My average heart rate was 137 and maximum heart rate was 167. I needed a shorter workout today because I had so many things to take care of. My daughter and her family are on their way and should be here shortly.

We have a few neighbors who like to shoot off fireworks for the 4th and for New Years. I hate them. Growing up my family always liked to shoot fireworks but I tried to stay far away. Fireworks were not sold in Georgia until a few years ago. People would drive across the state line to neighboring states to buy them before that.

I hear a car and I think my family has arrived. Have a great day.

from what I have read, the recommendation is to get the new shingles vaccine unless there is a specific reason you can't. probably every one of us had chicken pox as kids. I will tell you that shingles as an adult is no fun. I had it in my mid 20's before there was a treatment for it. I got the first shingles vaccine several years ago but I'm sure it's recommended to get the newer version. it can be a devastating disease when you are older, and does not always go away easily. I am sure my sister got the new shingles vaccine and was not feeling too sharp for a day or two after. just a thought... dont get it right before an important commitment just in case. I will check with my physical in august. I probably will need to get a dexa scan too. thinking it must be 10 years since my last one.

Carolyn I also disliked fireworks. we always spent the holiday with a family I didn't like, and I never could get past that. I am so-so Ok about the aerial displays but I hate the loud explosions. HATE them. I have no clue why anyone thinks it is enjoyable or that it isn't scaring animals and keeping everyone awake at night.

Valerie, when I get done with these other things I may check into the shingles vaccine as well as my pneumonia one. I don't want to get either.

Good evening ladies,

Yesterday was a couple of Bellicon Bounces. Almost did not workout so did a couple of feel short good bounces. 36 mins / 349 cal. I leave for Charlotte in the morning so tomorrow is my planned rest day. This morning I wanted an intense workout so I subbed in the Bring Sally up workout for todays SB. I then did her intermediate lower body bounce that targets the quads. I truly believe this is more advanced than intermediate. My quads are always shaking and on fire after this one. I finished up with a SanFran bounce that targets the arms. I felt amazing after this workout! 62 mins / 438 cal. On Thursday I am going to the gym with Madeline's daughter to workout with her personal trainer. Looking forward to this.

A couple of years ago my mamo came back as dense, but my last one in December said they were not dense. Do they change? I found this odd.

Bob went for his consultation on Monday. They are making him wait until the end of the month for the colonoscopy due to him recently having mild appendicitis. I feel so bad that he has to wait a month before they figure out what the heck is going on.

Carolyn...yes becareful of that knee when bouncing. I have apple tv but prefer to use a hdmi cable with my ipad to stream my workouts. My son laughs that I prefer it this way. To me it is easier and quicker to jump from workout to workout.

Diane Sue...your cedar chest sounds beautiful. I can see why you are not ready to part with it. The oldest sentimental item I own is my grandmothers singer sewing machine. I hope my son will treasure like I do. It is in a beautiful mahagony case and is a neat peice of furniture. Good the lab work came in better than last year. Hoping all the other will turnout all right too. I will mention to my husband about the meal for prepping. Perhaps his doctor can recommend.

Judy...the floor looks great! Very nice.

Deb...hoping your ac is fixed soon. We are in a middle of a heat wave..been above 90 all week. Crazy for us. I could not sleep if I did not have air in the bedroom. We do not have central air but a very large wall unit in the kitchen that cools the entire house other than our bedroom. We have a separate portable one we use. I did not want an ac unit in a window in the front of the house. Portable one is perfect.

Valerie...nice ride. They saw you coming so they cleared the way!! Lol! We could use your rain! Today, came home from work and went in the pool for an hour with my husband. We never go in on a week day. So hot here. GiGi had day care today and they have a little water park for the dogs. She had a blast.

Carolyn...enjoy your family!

Have a great night all. I will post at some point while away.

I just spent 3 hours getting through a bunch of forms for the Arthritis center :O It seems some of those things are repetitive on their questions and it makes me crazy. I put I had not had a pneumonia shot. I can't find my record and I didn't know if or which of the two they had on the form was the correct one. If I skipped something it wouldn't let me go on. It asked every medication, vitamin, and supplement taken how long results and later it comes back and asks me to list all vitamins and supplements again. I can see why they wanted this filled out before going in. And they still want me there 15 minutes early! Maybe do a search on the meal for the colonoscopy instead of the other option. I am sorry your husband has to wait since he really needs to get it over so maybe he can get some help.

Carolyn, enjoy your time with family and festivities :)

Lori, that will be fun working out with Madeline's daughter and her personal trainer. I have seen some of those indoor air units that they have now can work amazingly well. I remember my husband looking at some unit to put in the garage. It gets pretty overwhelmingly hot here. I am not sure a wall unit would work well. We have two central air units for upstairs and down and lots of fans. I remember seeing you old sewing machine and it is a beautiful piece of furniture. I know how you feel about it. That is cool that the doggie daycare has a water park for the dogs.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, and none today, or for the rest of the week. My hip was bothering so badly yesterday, I could hardly walk, and stairs were a killer. I had one of those headaches as well., sinus I believe. I feel much better this morning,

Judy, the flooring looks great. I forgot that you were doing it all over on the first floor.

Valerie, I'm with you, there is no need for any of those explosive type fireworks anywhere. They are so dangerous for all the things you listed. We gave our puppy class students a reminder about letting their puppies outside on the 4th....go with them, with a leash and do not leave them alone in a yard. Many dogs are lost due to being terrified and running off because of the fireworks. I have never gotten a shingles vaccine, but maybe I should. I have had bone scans, but not sure if they were actually called "dexa scans" I think it is an every other year, scan.

Diane Sue, your week next week does sound very busy! you and Judy are making me want to sign up for the KCM streaming. Is it on a month by month basis or do you have to sign up for a period of time? I understand not getting the vaccines, that is how I am about the flu vaccine, but I am considering the shingles one. That information you have to fill out for that appointment sounds onerous. :(.

Carolyn, great that your daughter and family are coming for the holiday. Will they be staying long?

Lori, great workouts! I didn't realize you were visiting Madeline. How is she doing? I can imagine how Bob feels, it must be frustrating to have to wait for some information. Does Gigi ever go in your pool? Or do you have a separate kiddie pool for her? We used to have one all the time for our dogs, but these 2 don't like it at all so we stopped getting them.

Any plans for today?

Take care,

Deb, you can sign up for kelly for month to month or for a year. Younsound like you really donneed to rest your hip. Are youbstill doing some stretching?

well it has started as a loud week. people were blowing off explosives until 1:45 am last night. quiet after 2 am, but a big kaboom at 9 am already today. If the explosions were limited to one day or even 2 days you have a chance of protecting your pets, but this has been going at least a week already but worse daily. that was how we got our first cat. showed up in our yard after the 4th. so sad it has to be like this. you can control things, for a day or two but not multiple days and weeks with explosions unpredictable. tonight I already know will be a nightmare so we are ready with air conditioning going on, ear plugs, and 3 locations to sleep depending on how loud and from what direction.

Deb, if you look up shingles on a good web site they will recommend the vaccine. use a decent medical site like Mayo clinic, CDC, WebMD, that type of website. Not many people have not had chicken pox! most can get the vaccine. the new one is called something like shingrix( not sure of exact name) and is more effective than older zostavax.
the herpes virus stays in nerve tissue after you had chicken pox as a child, and can re assert itself for no particular reason. in older people, it can be very difficult and hard to treat. Post herpetic neuralgia is very unpleasant can hang on for months or forever.. itching burning rash with pain that may not go away. It can affect any nerve. facial nerves can be especially nasty. I had a mild case in my 20's and I was out of work for 2 weeks because I couldn't wear clothing over the rash area. so yes, if you are not pregnant or immune compromised it will be recommended. I got the zostavax one and will get the updated one. I think my doc needs to order it for insurance coverage. out here almost all immunizations are done in pharmacies. If it is a preventable ailment, I would opt for prevention even if there is discomfort after the shot.

do you think you have bursitis in your hip?

Lori have a good trip. good you can see Madeleine again.
ETA when docs pick a prep for colonoscopy, they want one that works for sure. if you are not squeaky clean inside, they can't visualize the colon walls as well as needed, so you and insurance pay for an inadequate procedure that may need repeating sooner. my first colonoscopy used the propylene glycol prep and it didn't work well for me. it uses Miralax. most people do not want to do it a second time (!!!), and insurance may not pay for it. so docs choose "tried and true" even if unpleasant. its the same thing for a "virtual" procedure.... if anything is even questionable, you need to go back and do a standard prep/ scoping anyway, so why go thru it twice, and who pay s? Although it was more unpleasant, the Golytely prep worked better. It is unpleasant though and scares a lot of people away.

No workout for me today. We’ve been busy all day with a variety of activities and I am just sitting down to take a break. I hope everyone is having a nice holiday. We will have some fireworks around us, but I hope not too much. There are several organized concerts and fireworks displays around which cuts down on the do it yourself types.

Take care and have a nice evening.

I am working on some of the cookies for Monday. I will freeze them and have some dough in the refrigerator to continue backing. I Realized making them as large as they want almost only gets 12 to 18 cookies from a batch. I need 6 dozen. My husband was off today and grandson 18 came over for awhile to visit before he went to meet up with friends. :)

Good morning,

A nice day yesterday at my cousin's house, even though it was HOT, HOT, HOT!! We cancelled our trip to Wellsville. The Genesee river is flooding, and it has been raining there for a few days, so fishing is out. No sense going just to sit in a hotel with 2 dogs while it rains. :(.

Diane Sue, I have not been doing anything, last time was Sunday when I did the 21 Day Fix yoga workout. I know I should be at least stretching. What are the cookies for again? I may try one month or so of KCM streaming, once I am back to workouts.

Valerie, I feel for you on the explosions going on for days and at all hours. We had some last night up to about 11:00...then quiet. Hopefully it is done for another year. I am so grateful that our dogs don't get bothered at all. They were right on the street outside of our bedroom and the dogs were sleeping away, not a twitch. I will definitely look into the shingles shot. Yes, I think it is bursitis in my hip. I had it a while ago, then I think when I lost the weight from the gastro issue, it went away for over a year. Now I gained weight back and it is bothering me again. That is why I don't think its arthritis, but hey, you never know.

Carolyn, it sounds like you had a nice day.

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

We've been working on the bathroom and the flooring all week. Not too much else going on. Sunday I did KCM Raw Kettlebell & Dumbbells and Upper Body Blast. Monday I did Raw Bands & Barre and the Upper Body Finisher. Tuesday I did a Barlates total body workout and yesterday I did a short Spinerval. We rescheduled our Indiana trip for the weekend of July 21st and will stay Sat-Mon.

Deb-It sounds like it was a good idea to cancel your trip. It is very hot here too. I've had hip bursitis before and it sounds just like what you describe. It hurt to even walk. I hope it feels better soon.

Valerie-We had fireworks here the past few days too, but not as bad as what yours was. They stop around 11 or 12 here. Thanks for the reminder on the Shingrix vaccine. I have that on my to do list now and will probably go in next week for it.

Diane Sue-I hope your appointment with the arthritis center goes well and that your Dexa scan is good. I need to schedule one of those soon too. Eastern Michigan University offers them for $75 so I think I will go there rather than through the doctor.

Lori-I hope you are having a good trip! Working out with a personal trainer sounds like fun.

Hi to Carolyn!

Here is a photo of the half-bath. It's almost finished.

Deb, sorry that your fun got rained out. We stayed inside yesterday and did not go anywhere. I am liking the Coffey Fit Raw and she keeps the impact pretty low in quite a few of the workouts. The stretch is good.

Judy, your half bath is looking great. Did you do the plumbing yourself or have it done. We had the plumbing done as we had to have the guy put in the plumbing for the toilet since we were adding that for it to be a guest bath. It looks like you have been really busy. 75 dollars is a good price for a Dexa scan.

Well, it was a rough night but is over. we close all windows, air conditioning on, ear plugs and try to sleep through it. I would not complain so much if it were one night but we've had it for almost a week. I opened windows around 2 am and it was quiet. whew!
I did 15 on the elliptical, muscle meltdown triceps and high reps core.

I had hip bursitis a year ago. almost sure it was from floor exercises. hydrants or similar move using a band. I never could be sure. it went away in a couple weeks. I probably took some NSAIDS because I usually do, and stopped doing anything that made it hurt. I left the area alone and only did things that didn't irritate it. luckily I can always ride, that didn't bother it. Deb, you're lucky your dogs sleep thru the noise.

Judy bathroom is looking good! we did brushed nickel fixtures too. very happy with it. stays looking nice and easier to clean than chrome. please report back on how the shringrix goes. I don't like to get all preachy, but shingles can be horrible so why take the chance. most people don't think of it. when I had it, it was mild and on upper back hip. at first I thought it might have been poison oak due to the rash but no.

we lost so many people in DH's family to colon cancer. His grandmothers, grandfather, mother, father, aunt, and more. nobody ever got screened even though we pushed them hard to make it happen. they would not even do home screening with stool cards, which is nowhere near as good as scoping but better than nothing. DH is on a frequent screening schedule. most of his family died of it. sorry if I get preachy. we all gotta go at some point, but this was not a good way.

This morning I did Build and Burn Upper Body Supersets for 27 minutes and 153 calories burned. Average heart rate was 122 and maximum heart rate was 149. I was able to get that short workout done before anyone came downstairs.

We had a nice day yesterday and we watched the Capitol Fourth on television with the children. They enjoyed seeing the fireworks without being close to the noise.

Deb, I’m sorry to hear that your hip is still bothering you. Does stretching help at all?

Judy, your bathroom project looks wonderful. It’s good that you have been able to do most of the work yourselves. Good workouts this week.

Diane Sue, you seem to be all in with Kelly’s Raw workouts. I’m glad that you like the streaming. Sampling it on a short term basis is a good way to see if it works for you.

Valerie, I appreciate your input on the shingles vaccine and other health issues mentioned. I haven’t gotten the vaccine yet, but I plan to discuss it with my doctor when I have my physical.

Lori, I hope you are having a good visit with Madeline.

Take care and enjoy the day.

Valerie, we had a couple of fireworks sound off in the afternoon yesterday and then evening till around 10:30 and then it was silent. I think that I have said before that our immediate neighborhood is predominantly elderly people that are not so likely to be out shooting off fireworks. Gertie let us know every time there was a burst of sound. She would grumble and then whine and circle. I think the local places that shoot off public displays are generally all done by a little after 10, so that is why it was quiet. This year we did not go to my youngest daughters and watch fireworks from her back yard. Actually it would be me and the children. My husband gets chewed up by mosquitoes and my daughter is afraid of june bugs. I have never had a doctor mention a shingles vaccine. I finally found my immunization card. It was almost 10 years since the pneumonia vaccine. I will have to ask about the shingles when I go in.

Carolyn, good job getting in a workout before everyone got up. Kelly's are timed just right for a quick workout. So far since I got the Roku 3 set up it has been easy to stream with no issues. I also set up the Roku for Youtube so I don't have to go to another input setting on the television. That makes it easier to go to a yoga or something. I may find myself doing some different streaming here and there for some change. I still like my dvds though.

It is important to find out if your insurance covers the shingles vaccine. it is expensive.... if not covered..... like $300 expensive! since I already had zostavax, I'd be inclined to wait for my insurance plan to cover the new one. I don't think we can predict what our plans will or won't cover. I don't want you all to be angry at an unexpected cost.

around here, doctors offices are not involved in immunizations. all by pharmacies. sometimes you have to ask docs, so many topics they need to cover.. the clinic I use has a list of vaccines and other preventative things they want, and they will nag until you get it done. they have a program called My Chart. a good place to keep records and dates of what you had done and when.
Diane sue I'm pretty sure there are 2 pneumonia vaccines recommended now. our neighborhood is a lot of older people. they host big 4th of july parties for kids and grandkids. they get very loud. so no guarantee.

Valerie, I would have to check with Medicare and my secondary insurance. They give immunizations at the pharmacy, but I always get mine at my doctor office. They do it in their lab where they draw blood and stuff. I saw that there was two pneumonia shots listed on the forms that I filled out and since I did not know which one I had had, I marked I didn't have either. I will have to correct that, but the online form would not let me finish without every spot marked.

Edited to add that I looked up on the internet and it is usually part D that covers the shingles vaccine. It would depend on if there is a deductible on how much the out of pocket cost would be. I have Silver Script and don't have any prescriptions. I would have to look at my stuff since I don't see anything on the card itself.
