Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/24

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Barbell Upper Body, 43 minutes, 155 calories.

Lori, go for it! The vertical concept is a good way to mix things up.

Judy, there is just something about the Live workouts that make me feel like doing them. I like the DVD's with premixes etc, just the Live has a different feel to it...hard to explain.

Valerie, wow, I am sorry about the will situation with the will and your brother and SIL. that had to be pretty shocking. I agree, it may not be worth the legal fees, and time, energy on your part. Are you able to get copies of previous wills? So sweet about the fawn. Is it old enough to be without it's mother? or maybe she is nearby?

Carolyn, good job on MIS. That was a long one! I need to look at it, to see if it has premixes or was it before premixes were available?

Diane Sue, had no idea there were newer FitBits out there. I don't have texting on mine. I wish it had an alarm clock! It seems like it should, with the clock and the stopwatch ability. I have to admit, I have not really looked into the features that much. I also have jumped into the shower with it on a few time, jumped out and dried it off. It has always been ok. The Charge does not have to be taken out of its frame to charge it. The charger just clips on to it.

Take care,

This morning I did WS3 Cardio Step Jam for 32 minutes and 235 calories burned. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 248.

Deb, great job with Live Barbell Upper Body. I would need to use dumbbells for that one since I can’t lift the barbell on to my shoulders these days. I regained a lot of shoulder mobility after the frozen shoulder, but not enough to have the barbell on my shoulders. There are no premixes in MIS. It was done before Cathe was doing premixes.

Diane Sue, I looked at the Blaze, Ionic and Versa, but I don’t need the extra features. The Charge 2 is just right for me. You are probably right that Cathe has more impact in her cardio workouts. I guess I am just more familiar with Cathe and can easily modify movements. I need to challenge myself more and try some other trainers.

Hello to Lori, Judy, and Valerie.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Rockout Knockout and today I did S & S PHA then Jessica Smith Standing Abs. That was my first time trying Rockout Knockout. I liked it but I think I like Hard Strikes and 4 DS KickBox a little better. We are leaving for Indiana this weekend so I'm planning on doing my next active rest week starting Saturday.

Deb-I think once I start doing more Live workouts, I will want to keep doing them. I've really enjoyed the ones that I've done so far.

Valerie-I'm very sorry about your mother's will. I hope you can get some good advice from an attorney and that you can get some kind of resolution.

Diane Sue-I think the Versa has some good features. It seems similar to the Apple Watch, minus a few things. If I need to replace my Charge 2 I would probably look at that one.

Carolyn-Great job with MIS yesterday! That is a long and tough workout!

Hi to Lori!

Judy

This morning I did Fit Split Just Low Impact Cardio Mix, 29 minutes, heart rate average 118, max 160, met 5.8. 188 calories, 1,739 steps. I had to go get my labs done this morning for Monday's doctor appointment and get a stitch taken out. I swung by Sprouts for a couple of things I didn't get at Walmart yesterday. I go through a lot of Kale and it seems I am making a trip every few days. I thought that I might come back and do some yoga or something , but house cleaning needed done. I had need to go outside and mow the back. My allergies are terrible right now and grass pollen is high. I have been avoiding it. I coughed so hard all night that my neck hurt again this morning. It is fine this afternoon. This seems to be one of the things that sets off the neck hurting.

Deb, I felt like the live workouts were more like walking into a class setting without everything completely edited and set up. The thing I like better about my dvds is that I know what to expect since I have done them a lot. Live can be that way, but you have to do them a few times and there are not workout cards. The draw for me is it is something new so I don't get bored. I don't know how many times I start multiple dvds and keep taking them out because I remember there is something I just don't feel like doing in it. Better when I have a plan and make myself do it. My Blaze has a silent alarm. It vibrates to wake you up. Actually I can hear the vibration sort of like when you hear your cell phone vibrating and it is a strong vibration. I like it better than having some alarm clock going off. I hate the sound of my husband's alarm clock in the mornings.

Carolyn, I am sorry that the frozen shoulder has left you with less mobility for lifting the barbell. I would rather use dumbbells most of the time myself. It is just easier than changing weight plates. I have always had time slots written down for MIS and MIC . I believe it is around 25 minutes into MIS starts the lower body and abs. I did the upper and lower separately mixing them with Body Max years ago. I also used that last more intense section of step on MIC as an add on. I would have to look at my notes to see where that one is. I also did just the step a lot.

Judy, good idea to use your time away as your next recovery week :) I like all of those Kickboxing workouts, but each for different reasons. Rockout Knockout is more of the typical kickbox workout and not as intense and active as Hard Strikes, 4 Day Split has the around the room movement which kicks up the steps a bit and requires me to step over my dog who is not going to move:) I like the slimmer look of the Versa and for the price I think that is the one I would go for if I choose to get another. My Blaze is doing fine and I am used to it. I read someone say in a review that they had to clear the other Fit Bit out before the could add the new one. I thought That that page had a place for adding devices. I also read someone wore more than one to compare at the same time. I am not sure how that would work as using bluetooth, things like Map My Fitness picks up from the Fit Bit. Maybe if it was one that could just use wifi it could be done.

Good evening ladies,

Yesterday SB’s workout was Shoulders. When you sign onto her site it shows the workout of the day for your plan. Something is wrong as it is not showing all the workouts. There was another tricep workout scheduled but it does not show. I love working triceps too! On the PFD she sent out shows the two but not on her site. Odd. I noticed other days are like this so need to follow the PDF. I then did a LEKfit bounce that had an arm segment using bands. My arms were worked so all is good. Today subbed in a couple of challenges from SB’s site while in wide second position in releve you go up and down and pluse for the entire “Bring Sally Up” song. Well this song is like 3 and a half minutes. Wow my legs were shaking. I then did another Sally song while working the back of thighs and glutes. I used ankle weights and I certainly felt the burn. Loved it. I then did a short bounce on Youtube to get things flowing after these.

I found one of the Sally’s on Youtube so you have a feel.

Bob’s surgeon is unsure if surgery is required. Sending him for a colonoscopy. We are thinking his primary should have requested this prior. So we will see. We are somewhat relieved. His primary made it sound like he was ready to explode at any minute and surgeon, not so much.

Deb...looking up the vertical workout as soon as I post! You are doing great with the Live workouts. I like her DVD’s but there is something about her Live I love more. She could stop with dvd programs and sell her Live workouts. She can still do a series. They would just be one at a time! I would be fine with this! Of course her live channel would still have to be available for those that like having it.

Judy...good to know about Jari Love. I have never done one of her workouts either. The picinic sounds like there was some great food. Great workout today. Are you in Indiana for the week? I am heading to North Carolina to visit Madeline. I leave Wednesday and come home Saturday. I wish I could stay longer but I have so much going on.

Carolyn...isn’t that a great little workout? I loved all of them from WS3. Such a great program. I do not have frozen shoulder but I stopped lifting a barbell over to my shoulders a few years ago. Was having problems with my shoulders and it was uncomfortable for me to use a barbell. I now always use dumbbells. I do have some bodybars I like but still do not put them over on my shoulders.

Diane Sue...yes I can see how coughing could hurt your neck. I feel for you with your allergies. Hope your lab work comes out fine. GiGi is banned from my workout area. She is so dark I do not see her laying in the way. I will either hurt her or get hurt trying to avoid her. She is used to it now and sleeps outside the gate until I am done. She is so cute.

Valerie...yes his surgeon is a gastroenterologist and my husband really likes him. That is so sad about what you are going thru with your moms will. I am a firm believer in Karma!

Have a great night all!

Lori, 3 and a half minutes of that move would definitely be felt. Makes me think of all of those long segments in Les Mills Pumps or Cathe's Power Max like that biceps segment :) That is good that the surgeon is going to do more checking before jumping into surgery. Hopefully he does not have to go through the surgery. I have no problem seeing Gertie's black body on the beige carpet :) It is when I am outside at night that I have a hard time seeing her. I have thought she was in back on the grass, only to turn around and run into her LOL When I do a step workout Gertie is usually pretty good about picking a place away from the ends of the step. Sometimes if there is travelling around the step she will still be in the way. She sort of knows when I have out equipment what the patterns are. Cardio without equipment is when she seems to get right in the middle of it. Today she didn't stay. My workout wasn't long though. She came back up when I was done. I think she was making sure she got her treat from my husband before he went to work.

Lori-We will only be in Indiana for a couple of days as Chris wants to get back to work on the remodeling. We're planning on going back in August and will probably stay longer that time. That's good that you are going to see Madeline. I hope your husband doesn't have to have the surgery.

Diane Sue-My allergies have been really bad this week. Lots of grass pollen here too.

Good morning,

I took a rest day yesterday, was really tired for some reason. Probably because I don't get much over 5 hours of sleep each night. We have the AC repair people back to fix the leak in one of the AC units. He was here last week and had to fill it with whatever it is they use nowadays. It was completely empty. This is not supposed to happen so they said it has a leak somewhere.

Carolyn, there is no need to have the barbell on your shoulders for BB Upper Body. You do have to use it for shoulder presses, which could easily be done with DB's I like the Charge 2 for that reason, not a lot of bells and whistles that I would not use.

Judy, good workout! Is JS Standing Abs part of the WS series or a stand-alone? I would like to add yoga to my exercises to choose from on the Charge 2 but can't find any info on how to add that. I found how to add "call, text and calendar alerts" will need to set aside some time to get into this. Do you use those on yours? Great idea to use your trip week as an active recovery week.

Diane Sue, sorry about the allergies and having your neck get sore from coughing. Maybe ask one of the grandsons to mow the lawn? I did some research on my Charge 2 and found it does have some features I didn;t know about, I just don't know how to get to them...LOL...

Lori, that move looks really painful! I could probably do it for a minute, then my legs would collapse. Glad the surgeon is taking a more conservative approach. I do love the Live workouts, but still like the DVD's for the premixes. That is so nice that you will get to see Madeline next week.

Hi to Valerie,

Take care,

we did a road ride yesterday for 2.5 hours 26 miles and this morning mt biked for about 2 hrs 15. I crashed once but only into shrubbery. I needed to vent off some energy and anger.
Our resident fawn manages to get into the garden every day but so far sleeps there and not causing problems. He is too small and will stay with “mom” for months yet She is nearby but can’t crawl under the gates like he can.

I am horrified at what is ( has) happened.the betrayal is overwhelming. We were not trrribly close but this is unbelievable. all this time and in fact for years, brother/ SIL have known what they did and my mother signed on to this charade and kept it secret for years. how can anyone dump on two of her three children like that? I was up at 2 am thinking how good it would feel to rip up every picture I have of her, my brother /SIL and burn them in a garbage pile. I'm not sure you can imagine what this feels like until it has happened.

Thanks Judy..that is exactly what I needed. :)

Valerie, I can't imagine at all what you must be feeling. Have you had any contact with them since you received the copy of the will?

Not a sound. my brother was calling me every day and since he mailed the will copy, it is dead silence.
I talked to my sister last night and she is not surprised. she wants to take it to court but she has no money and lives right there. I would end up paying for this and also try to do it basically over the phone. I can see how legal bills could easily be more than the amount we could gain. there is the stress and increased anger and hostility that would come out. there is still a chance brother will do the right thing and share whatever they are able to sell the house for. that is a long way off because the house is packed to the rafters with junk, and is not up to building code to sell. we may be better off helping my sister get by since it seems she would likely expect to get at the most $40,000 from the house after it is eventually sold. the legal bill could easily surpass that.

I'm overwhelmed with the possibilities and variables.

Lori the mayo clinic web site has a very good discussion of crohns and the choices. my understanding is that you can't test for it specifically. there is a list of possible bowel disorders, and the docs eliminate them one at a time until the only thing left is crohns, and that's pretty much how it gets decided. a colonoscopy and a lot of other imaging is used to narrow it down. there are a lot of meds used to treat it but no one thing for everyone.

Valerie-I am so sorry you are going through this. I've never had that happen to me so I can't imagine how bad it must feel. I've been betrayed by friends in the past but that is nothing like what has happened to you. Is it possible that your mother didn't know what she was signing and was tricked into it by your brother and SIL?

Judy you bet it is. there was coercion and pressure . brother and SIL also did much of the heavy lifting so probably deserve a bigger portion but they also have been paying themselves and also made the choice to take care of her. not so much because they cared, but because they wanted to be sure they got some compensation and it didn't go to a nursing home.

Deb, hope it is a simple leak to fix. you don't want to be "without" this time of year.

Today I did Pyramid Lower Body, the up only premix. That was 47 minutes and 207 calories burned. Average heart rate was 114 and maximum heart rate was 148. After that I did JS Gentle Yoga for Balance, Flexibility and Mobility, flow 3 for hips and knees. That was an additional 22 minutes and 36 calories.

Valerie, I can’t imagine the sense of betrayal that you must feel over the situation with your mother’s will. I hope that your brother eventually does the right thing. Getting your rides and other workouts in is a good way to handle the anger and stress.

Deb, I hope the AC problem is not major. That can get to be expensive.

Lori, that SB workout looks tough with holding that position for 3 minutes. I hope the surgeon can determine an alternative to surgery for your husband.

Judy, I feel the same about Rockout Knockout. It’s okay but not my first choice for kickboxing. I prefer Hard Strikes or Rock’m Sock’m.

Diane Sue, Fit Split workouts are good when you don’t have a lot of time to workout. I like the Low Impact Cardio. I also prefer my dvds over Live for the reasons that you listed. I want to know what to expect in a workout and I like familiarity. When I did Live I always previewed first and created a workout sheet for the stress training. I have regained most of the mobility in my shoulders, but not enough to place the barbell in the right location. I use it for other exercises just not on the shoulders.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was SB Lightweights for Upper Body. I followed up the Jill Cooper super jump I posted the other day. I love the fast pace of this workout. Hope she does more.

Deb...hope your ac is working. We are going to hit 95 on Sunday! Yeah! Looking forward to some pool time. His surgeon has one opinion that makes complete sense and his primary’s opinion makes complete sense. They both want to do the right thing for Bob so they will also call in a 3rd doctor to discuss. This is insane, but we are glad they are doing this! My legs are still feeling that Sally workout and I love it. I will be doing this again soon! :)

Valerie...I completely understand your feelings and I am so sorry you are going thru this. All so very sad. It may very well end up being crohns. Hoping we know sooner rather than later so he can get on with things.

Carolyn...funny I hardly ever do a Cathe DVD anymore. I love her workouts but right now (and the past couple of years) I am all about Barre and Bouncing! I try to get a Live workout in on the weekends. I did review the July rotation and I thought it looked really good.

Judy...that sounds like a nice quick trip. I may now not make it to visit Madeline. It has been challenging for the doctor to schedule his colonoscopy. You would think he had some pull! We need to get this done and need the first available appt.

Hi to Diane Sue!

Have a great night all!

Lori-We just postponed our trip until later this month. Chris decided he wanted to stay home and finish the work on the bathroom first. I was able to cancel our reservations so it's all good. I hope your husband can get his colonoscopy right away.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Step Box step box and sculpt both workouts mix. This eliminates the drills and the strength drills. 58 minutes, heart rate average 129, max 161, 373 calories, 5,426 steps. I think that one with calories came to a met 5.8. I then did Muscle Up Back and Chest premix, 21 minutes, 93 calories met 4.0, heart rate average 104, max 133. I finished off with Sarah Beth Yoga You Tube Hot Sweaty Power yoga and the Cooldown legs and hips, 25 minutes, 63 calories.. 529 calories 1 hour 44 minutes. I had my grandson here today and we spent most of the day doing crafts and when he left I had to finish up some housework because I have to go out on errands tomorrow. It is hot. Right now it is approaching 8 and still 93 degrees outside. The heat index has been above a hundred. I went outside with Gertie to brush her before we used her frontline and I think we were both ready to get back in the house. I pressure cooked some beats tonight with the intant pot and I had very little mess. I took off the skin after cooking and sliced them. Having salad with sauted chicken and beets for dinner.
Weights
Muscle Up 8 reps each exercise supersets ( am pretty sure I did more than 8 reps on some of these and may have been moving too quickly)

Rows 30# dbs superset with bench press 17.5# dbs 3 sets

lawn mowers 30# db superset with flys 15# dbs 3 sets

Pullovers 30# db, 25# db superset with push ups bodyweight 2 sets

Deb, I do that too. I get so tired after several days of very little sleep, I just don't have energy for much. For my Blaze, which I would think would be the same as the charge, you go to your Fit Bit App on your phone, click on the Fit Bit charge (Blaze whatever you are using) in the right hand corner. You should see a list of what exercises you have put on your watch. You have to change it on the online Fit Bit Dashboard. You go to settings or your profile and settings in the corner then scroll down to exercise shortcuts. Once you change or add you click the save button. I am not sure as I did have yoga on mine and took it off to add Martial arts to mine. I don't really know exactly why I did that as I have Kickboxing on it too. I did have on of my grandsons tell me he could mow for me. He works so much with two jobs right now, I hate to have him do it. Both of my grandson's work. I hope that you get your air fixed without a lot of cost.

Valerie, I hope that your brother does right by the rest of you. I have a friend who had her brother and his wife give themselves a lot of their mothers money. I remember how upset she was. I do understand some money for care and stuff, but buying extra things for oneself is not right. So you don't think they really cared about your mother enough to keep her from a nursing home? That is so sad. I am guessing funeral costs come out of the money right?

Carolyn, nice workout today. I keep trying to make sure I fit in some yoga as many days as possible. It sure makes a difference.

Lori, my 7 year old grandson did Suzanne Bowen's Barre Amped Bounce cardio segment while I showered today. He wanted me to put the bar on it. He did it and then just wanted to jump on it :) I hope they get that colonoscopy scheduled soon. That is too bad that you may not be able to go spend some time with Madeline, but you need to be there for Bob.

Judy, it will be nice to have your remodel done before you leave on your trip.

Good morning,

I took a rest day yesterday, and will do again today. My hip was hurting so badly, I could hardly walk. I had to take ibuprofen to sleep last night. It feels great right now, but it is definitely inflamed and I don't want to aggravate it any more. I may do a short yoga hip workout. They fixed the AC unit yesterday, it needed a part. Good thing since it is predicted to be in the 90's all weekend.

Valerie, that is an awful position to be in. Your sister could definitely use any money from the house sale, but she certainly is not in a position to take on a lot of legal bills. Maybe if you wrote to your brother and tried to reason with him? I get the feeling that it is your SIL running the show, as they say. I agree with Judy, it almost seems like your mother did not know what she was signing. Also, they could have used the fact that they were there helping her, "while no one else was" etc and she felt like she owed them.

Carolyn, great job on the pyramid workout. I always liked the "up only" premixes. It would be nice if Cathe would publish the list of exercises for the Live workouts when she does the announcement the day before, so a worksheet of some kind could be made in advance.

Lori, that is great that the doctors have decided to work together on Bob's situation. That is too bad about maybe not being able to see Madeline, but fully understandable.

Judy, that is understandable that Chris would want to get the job finished. Sometimes you get "on a roll" and it is good to take advantage of that.

Diane Sue, Do you use a push mower for the lawn or a riding one? I think if the grandsons offer, I would take them up on it since it seems like it is really making your allergies worse. I was able to add yoga to my exercises on the FitBit. Also took off a couple I would never use, so that was good. I am not sure what is going on with my sleep report on it though. Yesterday and today's report was pretty off. It had be going to sleep at 8:50 pm, and I didn't even go to bed until after 10:00....I was not lying down either, but sitting up the whole time. Sometimes if you lie down to even read, it records that as sleeping. Also yesterday I was up for about 30 minutes, moving around etc, and it showed me getting up about 30 minutes later than I did. Strange.

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

This morning I did an oldie by Chris Freytag. I was reminded of it after I read 2lazy4the gym where she has done some of the other Chris Freytag workouts from around that time. The workout was Fight Cellulite Fast, the Cardio segment. Total time was 46 minutes with 344 calories burned. My average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate was 154. This is an intermediate level cardio interval workout with lower and higher impact moves and a low impact modifier. I looked back at my old exercise book when I first started doing this workout and I was amazed by the calorie burn that I was getting. It was 9 years ago and I was clearly in poor condition at that time.

Deb, I hope your hip continues to get better. The JS yoga for hips and knees that I did yesterday used a chair for some of the moves to make the full stretch more accessible.

Lori, you are doing great with barre and bounce workouts. I think after a while we all look for something different which is a good thing. It keeps us from getting bored. I like to add in some barre and occasional light bouncing. The rebounder isn’t as kind to my knees as I had hoped. I need to pay closer attention to proper posture with both types of workouts.

Diane Sue, great job with Step Boxing, Muscle Up, and yoga. The yoga really makes a difference for me.

Hello to Judy and Valerie.
