Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/17

We did a mt bike this morning. just under 7 miles, not quite 2 hours, a lot of fun.

Oh I remember the skillet of old grease sitting on the stove. I remember a "grease can" that sat in the back hall where cooking grease got poured for eventual disposal. I saw the grease filled skillet at friends' homes a lot. I don't remember my family doing that. I think you could get bacterial contamination and possibly the fat going rancid besides. Ugh. not a good thing.
I found a Lodge video when we were in MTand did the pan according to it. I plan on using mainly a brush and hot water to clean it, occasionally a little detergent. I make sure it's dry and store it not stacked with other pans.
cooking spray like Pam leaves a sticky build up on pan surfaces. I'm Ok with most neutral liquid oils. corn, soy, canola, I don't use a lot of any of them. I like olive oil by far the best but I don't think I'd season a pan with it. I liked avocado oil because of a high smoke point but pretty expensive. I have a jug of solid coconut oil I use sometimes, but the coconut aroma is very noticeable and I don't always want coconut essence in things. .

Deb hope you got in a nap this morning. nothing makes your day as difficult as missing a decent nights sleep.

Valerie, that’s great that you got in a fun ride today. I put a small amount of canola oil in my cast iron skillet then wipe out the excess with a paper towel. I just want a coating that leaves the skillet surface looking shiny instead of dull.

Carolyn I plan on the same thing. wipe with light coat of oil. I did the "steel wool, baking in the oven" process because there was burned on gunk that had to get completely removed to prevent future sticking and I'm sure there was no seasoning left by the time I got done. the pan looks like new now.

Good evening ladies!

Sunday I did Ice Low Impact 1 followed up with a Jill Copper bounce from YouTube. I really enjoyed both of these. Been a while since I have done this Ice workout. The Jill Cooper one I did was awesome. She is a little odd in the beginning but glad I stuck with it as it was a lot of fun. 24 mins of non stop fast paced bouncing. The link is below..oh she is Italian so I have no idea what they are saying. It is add on style and keeps building. Very easy to follow along though as they are mostlly saying “do it” and counting to four. Yesterday I took a rest day. I finished the water fountain. Tons of searching for natural rock then digging a stone up and bringing to where I needed it. I was tired! This morning I did a BBS Total Upper body weight workout followed with a BBS dance. Another fun workout.

Here is the workout. Diane Sue...you may enjoy it. Carolyn...it is really fast paced so not sure if this is what you like to do on a rebounder.

We had horrible thunder and lightning storms yesterday evening. We lost power for most of the night. My husband was working so I was alone. My son called and said he and his GF were going to a local mexican place and would I like to come for a margarita with her. Hmmm...sit home alone in the dark when it is 90 degrees or have a margarita in a restaurant with a/c. Did not have to twist my arm! :p

Carolyn...wow! That is cool your daughter won those prizes. What fun. I love hearing your workouts. You are inspiring me to actually try out a Cathe rotation. All these years and I never did one that she posts here. I like that it gets you to do workouts you would never choose.

Deb...I did not sleep at all last night. Tossed and turned. It was so hot and uncomfortable. I had an eye apt this evening and had to wait a bit becuase they dilated my eyes. Well, I actually fell asleep in the waiting area! They called my name and it startled me. Now grant you my doctor was running and hour late so I was just sitting there. Lol!

Diane Sue...glad you neck is a little better. I would not enjoy sleeping without a pillow. :( you still got a great workout in! Good for you!

Valerie...I do not know what brand of cast iron pan I have other than it is old. I season very similar to what you do and use whatever oil I have on hand, olive, canola, or peanut. It is has been great for many years. Nice ride!!

Judy...you will love your kitchen when it is done. This truly will make you feel you are in a new home. I love Cardio leg Blast. I did it a few times recently doing the FS rotation that I chose.

Here is a little video of our water fountain. The blue and white panel in the backgroung is temporary. GiGi kept wanting to jump behind it so we put that up and it did the trick. We love how it came out!

Have a great night all!

We got our truck back. They said it was something else that went bad and split into metal shards and tore up the transmission. That is why there was no warning and it just happened. Not something that normally happens, they were surprised when they got into it.

Valerie, I try to keep some avocado oil around for some of my cooking. I like it for dressings. I like the taste of the coconut oil and buy the organic unrefined because it has the most coconut flavor :) We all have our different tastes. There are some things that coconut flavor doesn't work with. They do make that clear liquid coconut oil that seems to be tasteless. I would not season my pan with too expensive of an oil though. Rancid oils makes me think of restaurants that I cooked in and their saving the oil, screening out the bits and reusing it the next day. It would get dark before it was disposed of. I don't know how they do it now as that was many years ago. Like maybe 40 years or so. I cannot bring myself to reheat and cook things with the same oil. It would lose it's nutrition and possibly be bad for you. I sometimes buy Chosen Foods Avocado oil blend that has a nice flavor and has some high oleic safflower oil, and coconut oil in the blend. It does not taste or smell like coconut to me and works pretty well for baking and I have used it to make mayonnaise for dressings. I do not use dairy or sweetener in my mayonnaise. It is really more a dressing that I add seasonings and red wine vinegar to.

Lori, I love your fountain. It would be such a relaxing enjoyable thing to have. Thanks for posting the video. Once I get past this neck pain I will go back to some rebounding. I cannot tolerate shaking and jerking my neck around right now. My knee is doing well, no problems after yesterdays Build and Burn tabata legs. I didn't go as heavy as I normally would. I was looking at some barre workouts Fitness blender thinking of maybe doing some of those. Every time I got up at night I automatically reached for my pillow that wasn't there to snuggle into. I had read that pillows can be bad for necks and had a doctor suggest no pillow before. I thought it might be worth a try. That is nice that you were able to go out somewhere cool rather than sit in a dark house by yourself. It made for a pleasant evening:) We have storms coming tomorrow. I generally make sure my devices are fully charged and lanterns and flash lights when I know storms are coming.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Total Body Step Circuit Plus Core, 47 minutes, 256 calories. This is a really tough one. The set is used for the cardio segments, very simple steps, nothing dancy.

Judy, what are the moving plans? Are you going to a certain area in the future?

Valerie, thanks for the info on seasoning the cast iron pan. I do the oil part after each use, but have never baked it in an oven. That makes sense. Does the Lodge instructions say to use soap each time you clean after cooking? I know that is a big controversy, some say never use soap on them. I have a hard time believing it is clean without at least a little dish soap. I always do the oil afterwards and dry with a paper towel. I use avocado oil. Then I put it on a really low burner for about 30 seconds to make sure it is dry. This way prevents any rust from forming. I store it in the oven.

Carolyn, good job on 4DS Kickboxing. That is my favorite Cathe kickbox....then I like the one that came with one of the recent series, ( can't think of it off hand).

Diane Sue, sorry about your sleep, but it sounds like the pillow is the problem. What is "Sigmatic Golden latte mix"? I can't imagine never washing a fry pan, no matter what they say. I agree, there would have to be bacteria if food is just left on there. I use a square, flat decorator pillow inside of a pillow case, instead of a normal bed pillow. It is enough lift to make my neck have something under it but not sink into a soft pillow. After using this for years, I can't use a regular pillow any more. It makes it tough to sleep when we are in a hotel.

Lori, that was a fast paced workout! I can't imagine being without power in the heat we have been having. Great that your son called and invited you for a margarita with them. :). Good timing. The fountain looks awesome! Where were you finding the rocks that you had to dig up?

We have a plumber coming today to look at our slow shower drain. Hope they can fix it easily, but you know how that goes!

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a 90 minute indoor ride and today I am planning on doing Ramped Up Upper Body and a yoga or stretching session.

Deb-We've decided to look at moving to Colorado Springs when Chris retires. It's a beautiful area and I think we would love living there. We have family there too so that's a big plus. We have thought of buying a house around here before that, since the condo is so small and we need a little more room. I hope your shower drain is an easy fix.

Lori-We had storms Monday night and last night too. No power outages though. It's good that you got to get out of the house. I hate being here when the power is out. I love your fountain! Great job with the workouts!

Carolyn-Great job with 4 DS Kickboxing! That is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed Cardio Leg Blast. I need to do that one more often.

Diane Sue-I always make sure everything is charged and I get out all of our lanterns and flashlights when storms come. I hope your neck is feeling better today.

Valerie-Nice mountain bike ride! We always had Crisco, Wesson oil and margarine when I was growing up too. We only had butter on holidays or special occasions.

Have a great day!

Judy

Deb,Deb Four Sigmatic golden latte is a powder packet with shitake mushroom and tumeric with spices. It sort of has a ginger taste so I image ginger is in it. They just came out with this one so I purchased several packets to try. I mix in with some hot water and warmed coconut milk. They sell individual packets of various mushroom coffees, matcha tea, adaptogens. I sometimes just use tumeric spice, but I think the part of tumeric znd how it is processed makes a difference in effectiveness for pain. I should just try the root itself since they sell it at Sprouts. I tried the Reishi mushroom coffee before for sleep and stress , but it makes me too groggy and is bitter.
I think cleaning well with really hot water and heating the pan would kill bacteria. Actually soaps can absorb and be left which is probably harmful when eating the food cooked in it. I use natural soaps though. Years agonthey didnt have all of these foamy soaps. Sometimes sand was used to clean and scrub. Hot or boiling water to rinse. Baking soda cleans and removes grease, but I dont think one would want to use it on cast iron. Funny, my husband insists on foaming hand soap since he doesnt think the other cleans as well. I keep telling him foaming soap has more water in it and a special pump to make it come out looking like foam. My water pillow is not very puffy. I have hardly any water in it. I have tried adjusting it to different levels.

Judy , Colorado Springs is a beautiful area. We lived in Aurora for a few years when I was growing up. I have heard it is not so nice anymore. We lived on the outside edge an I dont think it was that large of a city at the time.

deb also hoping shower drain is easy. they can get pretty disgusting inside! I have long hair and lift the screen and clean if every few months. you never can tell though if the problem is right near the shower or somewhere along the way to where it connects to city drainage out by the street. encroaching tree roots, things like that.
I'm happy with how the cast iron turned out. expect to season it only when necessary. when its seasoned properly and the surface is smooth, things don't stick and a scrub brush, hot water and a dash of detergent should cover it . drying it thoroughly too. I use it mainly for chicken and a baked pasta dish. I had been scrubbing with a brush but it never got the last layer of crud off, and the steel wool did it and now it's smooth.

don't get me started on pillows! new springy foam pillows are too thick. give me headache, neck strain. I use mostly feather pillows that flatten down to a comfortable thickeness, not very thick. I always have issues at hotels and sometimes fold up a sweater and put it in the pillow case to make a thinner "pillow".
Judy Colorado will be quite a change from Michigan. I left the midwest a long time ago and never missed it at all. Hope you can make it happen. everything is bigger and most places have problems with homeless people, druggies etc that didn't exist, at least not to current extent, 20 years ago. I hardly recognize seattle anymore.

Lori the pond is lovely. you are so creative.

we are riding again today. road ride. it's been pretty hot.

Hi Ladies,
Today I did Cardio Supersets for 41 minutes and 257 calories burned. My average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 160. When I was doing the momentum lunges on the discs I felt a twinge in my knee. Something about that lateral move didn’t work for me. I stepped off of the discs and did side to side steps instead.

Deb, great job with Live Total Body Step Circuit—especially the step part!

Judy, Ramped Up Upper Body is a nice workout. Moving to Colorado Springs after retirement sounds exciting, especially since you have family there. Crisco and Wesson were the oils that my mother used too.

Diane Sue, it is so hard to find the right pillow. I’m not happy with the one that I am currently using, but I haven’t looked for a new one. The Four Sigmatic latte sounds interesting. I sometimes add turmeric and ginger to warm almond milk and a small amount of coffee with whatever other spices I feel like using. I guess that’s my version of a latte.

Lori, that rebounding clip looks like fun, but I think it’s a bit too much for me. Your fountain looks wonderful. The sound of the water would be very relaxing.

Hello to Valerie.

Today I did 4 Day Split Lower Intensity Step cardio and core, 49 minutes, 315 calories, heart rate average 123, max 162, 2,978 steps. I then did Kelly Coffey Athletic Training volume 1 stretch workout 26 minutes, 50 calories, 72 steps. Total time 75 minutes, calories burned 365. I had to drive out to my daughter's house to meet my husband. He was dropping off their pick up that they let us use while the Range Rover was being repaired.

Valerie, I haven't tried steel wool, but will the next time I deep clean my cast iron. Hotels are so uncomfortable places for sleeping. The best thing is to have your own pillow with you, but when flying that is not possible. It is also a nuisance. I tried a rolled up towel inside a pillow case for under my neck, but it did not work out well. Not the same as being in a hotel though.

Carolyn, when researching getting rid of knee pain I had read something about lateral moves. I have noticed since the torn miniscus that lateral motion done quickly and the landing can often bother me. Also the discs. It seems they kind of put some added pressure, pulling them in and out. I am fine with forward and back moves or up and down, but lateral can be a problem. Twists and turns on step has to be done with thought to not twisting too much and too quickly, picking up my feet so they do not drag, it that makes since. I would call your mixture a latte :) I buy organic ground tumeric. That stuff sure does stain. I had to bleach my dishcloth today because I got some on it when my fan blew the powder off my spoon.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Sarah Beth Yoga Hip Opening, 20 minutes. I did not wear a HRM or use my FitBit since the calorie burn on this would have been so low it would not matter. I also forgot to put it in MFP, did it this morning.

Judy, good workouts! I have never been to Colorado, but everyone says it is beautiful there. We were lucky with the shower drain. Apparently when we had the bathroom done, they closed off the access to the trap! UGH. He was able to clear the drain through the drain in the tub with a snake. Hopefully this will keep. If it gets to the point that it doesn't, they will have to drill through the floor of the bathroom, into the ceiling of our front entrance hall to get to the trap and replace it. We should have notices that they didn't do that. There was access to it before we had it remodeled.

Diane Sue, those coffees do not sound too tasty to me. My mother used to use course salt to "scrub" the pan but she also used a little dish detergent. We had some of that foaming hand soap. You are right, it is just diluted soap in that container that makes it foam. You can reuse the container by adding your own soap, with about half water and it will foam just as well.

Valerie, I have a real problem with hair. Mine is so thick and it comes out easily. I bought these drain covers/hair catchers at Amazon that work well for that. The plumber was impressed with them and asked where we got them. He said he would want to keep a stash on his truck for people to use. You are the same as me about pillows. I like them flat, I hate when you put your head on one and the sides come up. I feel like I am being smothered!

Carolyn, good that you caught that move and changed it before something happened with your knee. When you use the warm almond milk with turmeric, how much turmeric do you use? Does it help with pain?

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

This morning I did Amy Bento Ross Hi/Lo Dynamics, combos and intervals 1-3, 40 minutes, 265 calories, heart rate average 133, max 173, 3,318 steps. I followed this with Low Impact series Yoga Relax express 1, 28 minutes, 71 calories. Total time 68 minutes, 336 calories.

Deb, that is a good hip opening workout. That is terrible that they had closed off the trap and left it. I hope you don't have to tear things up to fix it. Those coffees and stuff from Four Sigmatic are really not bad at all. Just the Reishi. I have used the lions mane and the Cordyceps and they just taste like instant coffee. They have cocoa with mushroom adaptogen powders as well. They get good ratings for their products.

Today I did Pyramid Upper Body and I really feel well worked. My time was 1 hour 13 minutes with 339 calories burned. Average heart rate was 113 and maximum heart rate was 160.

Deb, I’m glad that you were able to do Sarah Beth yoga. That’s great that the plumbing problem was minor. I added 1 teaspoon of turmeric to my almond milk, but I used half that amount when I first tried it. I just read that a pinch of black pepper helps to activate the turmeric, but I haven’t tried that yet. I don’t know if it actually helps to relieve pain immediately, but it’s such a wonderful anti-inflammatory that I try to include it and ginger in my diet often.

Diane Sue, I have tried to be careful with lateral lunges and other lateral moves. I thought that the gliding discs would be easier on the knees, but I have found that that’s not always true for me. I read about the Four Sigmatic hot chocolate in a Bon Appetit newsletter a few months ago. People seem to like it quite a bit.

Hello to Valerie, Lori, and Judy. Have a nice day everyone.

We rode yesterday, 26 miles. a really pleasant ride nice temp and not crowded at all.
today we tried a hike but ran into too much snow again. we parked at the last big snow patch and climbed over it and walked the road beyond to the trailhead. there was too much snow on the trail too, and after half an hour or so we quit and walked back. this is a very late year. usually the snow is down enough to walk thru by memorial day. this was still BIG amounts of crusty nasty stuff.

Deb too bad the remodel was not done properly. I can't imagine blocking access to the trap is a good idea. you can't watch every step. you hire people to do jobs and they should know what they're doing.

I am not sure if I will do anything tomorrow. My mammogram is at 9:45 which is later than the 8 I thought it was. I think the 8 oclock appointment is my physical. No neck pain today :) Usually it has been getting worse late in the day. I have my 7 year old grandson here today and we went shopping and have been doing some dinosaur crafts. My 18 year old grandson came by for awhile before he went to work. We ordered some car parts so my son can help him tune up his car.

Carolyn, the gliding discs are not as easy on the knees as one would think. Nice job on Pyramid upper body today.

Valerie, snow in June seems a little late. I remember my daughter going to a camp in Colorado in mid July and there being snow. I rather enjoy the summer weather more than snow. At least until it gets in the 100 + temps then I would rather have the cold.

Good evening ladies,

Yesterday morning was SB intermediate Lower body followed up with a Barlates Bounce. Barlates released a new bounce yesterday too, but just a teaser. I knew it was a matter of time before she would charge for her rebounding. She posts a lot of free workouts so I can’t complain. I bought the download. It was only $3.99 for a 50 min workout so I thought that was a bargain. This morning I did this Bounce and used ankle weights and 1lb hand weights and I loved it. The weight intervals worked the entire body. Then today she posted another 60m barre and bounce free on YouTube. I find that odd..some free and one you pay for. Oh well, free works for me

Carolyn and Diane Sue...here is the link if interested.

Deb...omg those rocks were a challenge! I collected them from our back yard. They were way in the back against the treeline. Some were easy and some I needed to dig a bit to loosen. I also found a pet friendly solution to treat the water. It is the same water pumping over and over and will get gross pretty fast in this heat. GiGi is constantly trying to drink it. So we needed to take care of this right away. Was that step work out from last week? Thanks for the review. Her Live workouts have been great. There was no Live workout today. One of her sons graduated from high school and now they are in Florida on vacation. Good for her and her family! Great the plumbing was not a huge thing and hoping that solves the problem.

Diane Sue...yes no bouncing for you until your neck is 100%. Good that you recognize that. Years ago I would push thru the pain only to hurt my self more. At our age, we realize the importance of not doing that. Good you have the truck back. My husband has been using the magnesium supplements you mentioned and feels they are helping with his leg cramping at night.

Carolyn...I never knew that about turmeric. Good to know. I am careful with lateral lunges too. My right knee gets a pain every now and then so I avoid lateral altogether when it flares up.

Valerie...I am the same way with pillows. I need a feather pillow not to large. My friend talked me into buying a Bamboo pillow. I hate it. Felt like I was sleeping on a brick. My husband loves it. Go figure. Nice ride!

Judy...Colorado Springs sounds so nice. I have only been to Denver. Was there for a night visiting friends on my way to see my brother. Awesome 90 min ride!!!

My coworker’s Jumpsports arrived today. She had them sent to the office and she is very excited. I always worry when I recommend something to someone. Hoping she loves rebounding as much as I do since she just invested in two. I sent her a few Youtube links to get her started. Thinking she is going to sign up to LEKfit too. I will let you know her thoughts.

Have a great night all!

Lori, thanks for the link. I saved it on my youtube :) I think we learn over time that working through pain can lead to much worse and a longer recovery time in the end. Since I went back to that magnesium calcium + formula I stopped having the leg cramps. I try not to rely on constantly taking supplements, but sometimes I pay for stopping some of them. The nurse at my doctors office was looking over my file and looked up in surprise and said, you're not taking any medications? I told her I don't like them.
I bet that was a lot of work hauling the rock and digging it out. I saw pictures of Cathe, her mother, and her sons at Disney on facebook. That is nice she is getting away for some fun. I bet your friend loves the Jump Sports.

I made my Chicken Pot Pie Soup recipe using the Instantpot tonight. I just looked at other recipes and timing. I put it on saute for 5 minutes and cooked the veggies then added the chicken, potato, and the rest of the ingredients and pressure cooked on high for 10 minutes, I let it naturally release the steam for 10 minutes and quick released what was left. I added coconut milk at the end. It was perfect. I changed up the recipe a bit and added some frozen peas. Most of the chicken pot pie recipes call for cream or one was almond milk. I have always used coconut milk though.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. John and I took a ride to Rochester to secure crating space for today, and the weekend ( if needed). I had heard that crating space was at a premium, so I thought I would go in advance. It is too stressful to be driving there, with the dog and crate stuff etc, on the day of the trial, and get there and find no space to put up a crate. Then have to go into the ring. Better this way, even though we had to drive there. We had a nice lunch at an Italian restaurant.

Diane Sue, I was okay with that yoga, but my hips are so tight, I had trouble with a few of the moves. I guess doing it often will help that. I saw that they have that brand (Four Sigmatic) on Amazon. I don't really drink that much coffee any more, and if I do, it is decafe, so this would probably not work for me. Hope all turns out well at the appointments today. That chicken pot pie sounds delicious. What do you use for a crust?

Carolyn, the Pyramids are great workouts, even with the fast pace. Thanks for the info on turmeric. I would love something that would really relax me at night. I think the gliding discs are problematic for knees, as you really are in a position where you can't control where your knee is going, if that makes sense.

Valerie, that is too bad about that trail still having too much snow. Maybe by the 4th of July it will be better.

Lori, John brings all kinds of flat stones/rocks from fishing streams and we put them around the garden. Mostly for looks, and they also help with keeping the weeds down. Good that you found something that works for Gigi and her drinking the fountain water. I never thought about what the quality of the water would be after a while. I was wondering why there was no post Wednesday on the upcoming Live workout. Good for Cathe for taking a break. I hope your friend likes rebounding! My nighttime leg cramps stopped once I started taking magnesium again.

Hi to Judy,

Off to Rochester....wish me luck!
