Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/14

Today I did RWH Low Impact HiiT One for 28 minutes and 188 calories burned. My average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate was 152.

Diane Sue, nice work with Raw Box and Sculpt and Total Body Strength. I did the entire LiTE Pyramid Pump one time and quickly realized that I would not do that again! Now I always do either upper or lower, but never both. I am very sorry about your friend’s daughter.

Cathy, congratulations on getting 10,000 steps before 12:30. That’s great. Your son sounds like he is very talented.

Lori, great job with Fit Split Boxing Bootcamp. It’s been a while since you have done a Cathy workout. That’s wonderful that your son is going to buy your house. That will certainly ease your moving woes.

Judy, 4 Day Split Legs is a good workout without being too long. That’s great that you were able to run outside and enjoy the nice weather.

Deb, I’m glad that Ike is home and doing well. Great job with a Pyramid Pump Upper Body. As I mentioned above, splitting upper and lower body is the only way that I do that workout now.

Valerie, I’m glad that your hair appointment went well. I have always lived in warm areas, so the humidity is just something that I have learned to live with. However, Florida in the summer is brutal! We were stationed in Panama Canal Zone for 39 months and that was very humid. You could see steam coming up from the ground after it rained.

Hello to Christina. Have a wonderful day.

Today I did Lite Cardio Party basic mix #6 which is main+calorie crush (step)+ abs#1, 69 minutes, 5,915 steps, heart rate 120/158, 317 calories. I then did Lindsey Samper yoga therapy, episode 7 and 9 which is add on stretches ( I am not fond of #9 really) this was 26 minutes 25 calories, 18 steps. Total time spent 94 minutes, 342 calories, 5,933 steps. It is pouring rain today. I Spent some time setting up an app for my grandson 8's new Gizmo watch so he can text me as well as call me as one of his 10 peope he can have. Funny, now I can see his step count and where he is at. His parents got it for him to encourage him to be more active because when his Dad is sleeping during the day and mother at work it sits a lot. I did not get a stretch in last night as it ended up 1:30 am and I just went to bed. I plan on getting Lindsey's yoga # 11 again this weekend. I have done so many superman type moves this week, I kind of want to get that area loosened up some more as well.

Today I did ICE Rock'm Sock'm Kickbox with abs. Still not sure how I feel about that one. So, I need opinions or enablers. LOL When I did the LITE rotation it threw in the Pyramid Pump workouts. In my non-infinite wisdom for some reason I didn't buy that extra DVD. Lower Body isn't an issue, because it's all together in a premix, but the upper body ones are split between all the DVD's which is rather a pain, though I did them that way. I certainly never see myself doing the whole 80 minutes, so it would mainly be for the convenience of having the upper body together. Not sure it's worth it given the times I might actually use it.

Lori, selling a house between relatives is so much easier. We bought this one in '97 from my parents and it was much simpler than dealing with realtors and strangers.

Deb, Derek turned 19 yesterday and he has wanted to be a zoologist since before he knew what it was called. I have pics of him at about age 3 taking all his toys and using them to make zoos. And sleep, it's been my nemesis for years now. I've tried taking something, but my body doesn't react right to them. They don't put me to sleep at all, and some just put me in a zombie state where it's like my body is sleeping, but my mind is awake and running rampant. Really freaky.

Valerie, how short is short. I'm 4'9". A couple years ago, I started using only my platform for step when it finally dawned on me that given how much taller than me Cathe is I'm still working just as hard and it's easier on my knees.

Diane Sue, I'm so sorry about your friends daughter, and it's so very rough when there are young children.

Judy, my husband grew up in Redford. I am so NOT a city girl. I lived in Lansing for a couple years around '90 and just hated it. I go into Lansing often to do things, but I avoid any bigger cities. We are out in the country 5 miles from the closest small town. More power to those who can do cities, there are certainly a lot of advantages.

Cathy-I grew up in the Quad Cities (Illinois-Iowa). I moved here (Plymouth, MI) when I married in 2007. We aren't far from Redford. I'm still not completely used to Michigan, and all the people in this area. It's very congested and traffic is horrible. Not to mention recently being a hotspot for Covid-19.

We have been working on the bathroom today. I got 33 floors in today running up and down the stairs with things. It is finally finished. I got 12,200 steps in as well. My knees are feeling that workout and all of the running up and down the stairs. Hopefully it feels better after I get some sleep.

Valerie, I bet it feels nice to have your hair done and the shingles vaccine out of the way. I remember with the Shingles vaccine and the Pneumonia vaccine my arm being sore. Keto usually requires extra fiber because the digestive system gets messed up. I am not a fan. I can do lower carb, but not keto as I like the crunch of an apple and that sort of thing. A stick of celery does not do it for me. I guess there are tons of high fat snack recipes which always made me feel kind of sick to the stomach. My husband has done well with it, but I keep looking in the refrigerator for some food that feels satisfying.
I hear the tiniest noises at night. Sometimes I get up to go check out what it was if I can't come up with a reason for the noise. Wonder how a pineapple would roll off onto the floor.
From the looks of my new growth I am sure my hair would not be a pretty grey. My mothers was a light brown with gray streaks. She was in her 60's when she died so I never got to see her in latter years.
I drink so much water. I keep water by the bed for the dry mouth and try to rely mostly on dry mouth lozenges and gel, but they don't work well. I try to hold off much water after 7 and sometimes I only have to get up once. That does not work well in the summer though. Too thirsty.

Deb, I am glad to hear Ike is okay. I am pretty sure I did all of Lite Pyramid in the past. Most of the workouts I do the entire workout right off. Although I may have done just lower at first and tried to split upper because when we got those I was doing the physical therapy. It seems like a lot of Cathe's newer workouts are fast paced. The latest PHA was fast too. Although I was surprised it didn't burn more calories. I often wonder the secrets of these instructors to not have injuries. I know Cathe had one. She does have so much energy and makes the workouts look easy.

Carolyn, nice work on Ripped With Hiit. I used to do Cathe's extended length workouts and add on to make the workouts around 90 minutes most of the time. I look back at it and wonder why I thought I needed to do that. I guess I do long workouts a lot still, but part is usually yoga or abs or something light. Not a double standing with the whole workout or something like that.

Cathy, I purchased the whole set of Lite workouts with the Pyramid Pump since it was such a good price on the presale. I knew I would probably end up purchasing anyway. If you don't mind doing the workouts from each of the other dvds I would say don't do it. I like having them altogether and premixes .
I have found using more risers with the step does not make a huge amount of difference in calorie burn. I am not that tall either at 5'4 .

I did XTrain Chest, Back and Shoulders today. It's okay, but too many pushups for me-I am NOT a fan. It's weird because I can do a lot of Cathe's newer workouts, but the thought of doing the older, longer ones, totally intimidates me.

Diane Sue, so glad I'm not the only one that has to investigate noises at night! Anytime, I hear a noise no matter how small that I can't identify, I can't sleep till I figure out what it is. I didn't take anything last night, woke up just before 6 feeling pretty rested. I knew I got less than 7 hours, but I felt pretty good, but then I looked at my Fitbit sleep data and saw how many awake minutes I had and that was depressing. I have to stop looking at that every day.

Our yard isn't level and we've left it natural with paths mowed in, so that's where I get my walking time in, and it cracks me up that my Fitbit counts the non level parts as stairs, so I get 50-60 stairs a day.

Back to normal. yesterday was a very bad day, all vaccine related. glad there aren't more shots to this series! I slept much of the day and all night. ran a temp, ached all over , headache. arm was hot, swollen etc. if you are planning on getting the shingrix vaccine, plan for the next day as a "down" day and be pleasantly surprised if you feel OK. I was sicker with the second one than the first. I would have had to cancel anything planned. after the first shot, I made sure I didn't plan anything for the next day.

my experience with keto was unpleasant. I got sucked into the hype (Atkins diet) and I had easy access to testing products. It caused terminal constipation, ravenous hunger, low blood sugar, and I only briefly got to "ketosis". checked pee with test strips. If I ate even a few leaves of iceberg lettuce, I went out of ketosis. I had a constant headache, breath that would stun a dragon, shaky, cold sweat, "too low to function" blood sugars. that great experiment lasted about a week. we are not all put together the same way. I was miserable every minute, lost no weight. high fat stuff is not appealing, and I had constant nausea and hunger. I could not think straight.

when I cant sleep I take Advil PM. works Ok for me. I've tried ambien. always wake up with a headache feeling like I didn't sleep at all. splitting it in half is better but still not that helpful and you only should use it occasionally. I tried melatonin, and a few other things that didn't work.

the pineapple had a crooked stem. it looked balanced leaned against a bowl. must have tipped and rolled. it was fine all day. I heard the thump but didn't get up. DH did. I already felt bad and it would have needed to be an explosion before I would have gotten up.

Cathy I am 5' 1.5". used to be closer to 5'3". I think that is how tall cathe is. I know she is not "tall". yes, 4'9" is definitely short! I've lived in cities but not in a long time. the less people... the better. I'm not good with fancy footwork so I use the step by itself or with one riser. tripping over the step is a risk. I use dvds ( no signal in workout area) and my player has a 0.8 button that slows the disk down. it works well if you have a new workout a little too hard or fast. you can turn it on/off easily, so even if there is one move that is troublesome, you can slow it and then speed it back up. I hope your son can pursue his goal of zoologist. is there a job in his future? so many degrees lead to dead ends.

my mother had red hair that didn't change into a nice gray, mine is like that but brown. not getting a nice silver or gray just insipid.

Today I did Low Impact Series Upper Body Trisets. My time was 58 minutes with 279 calories burned. Average heart rate was 114 and maximum heart rate was 155.

Diane Sue, nice job with Cardio Party + Calorie Crush. I’m sure that you are happy to have the bathroom finished. That’s a lot of trips up the stairs.

Cathy, great job with Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing plus Abs. I like that one and I do it frequently. As far as Pyramid Pump goes, I like it, but I prefer the original Pyramid Upper and Lower Body from the Intensity series. X Train Chest, Back, and Shoulders is another good workout. Do you ever use the timesaver premixes? I will choose a timesaver if the workout is longer than what I want to do.

Valerie, your Shingrix vaccine really did a number on you. I’m glad that you are back to normal. I only had a sore arm after each injection.

Hello to Deb, Judy, Lori, and Christina.

Valerie-I'm sorry your Shingrix vaccine had such a bad effect on you. I was going to try to get my second one before the end of June. I had a really bad reaction to the first one so I have a feeling I will have the same reaction you had to the second one.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Lean Body Circuits hi/lo premix, 21 minutes, 120 calories, heart rate 131/170, 2027 steps. I also did Lindsey Samper Yoga therapy 11 and most of the strength and flexibility one, 47 minutes, 49 calories, 78 steps,78/99 heart rate. Total time 68 minutes, 169 calories. Tomorrow is a family day so it will be my rest day.

Cathy, I used to love those long workouts. Now, I just don't do workouts I don't enjoy. That leaves a lot of those sitting on the shelves. Music makes a difference to me as well. I have a tiny yard that lawn doesn't grow well in. It would not be the place I would walk. I use a push mower to do the back. Front is bigger, but the HOA mows it. We have walking paths, side walks and a bike lane in our neighborhood and the park is up the street with paths back through the woods. A lot of walkers around here and I would rather be out there by myself.
My husband tells me I don't need my watch to tell me if I slept enough or not. I look at it every morning. Although, like you some mornings I feel rested and think it was pretty good till I look at my Fitbit app. Then sometimes like yesterday it said my sleep was good and I was so drowsy all day. I kept nodding off when I would sit at the computer. Same thing today. I take some magnesium before I go to bed at night to help. I got the Fitbit Premium to try for 90 days and tried there sleep program which was basically reading articles on sleep, listening to a relaxing mindful recording, and doing yoga or something before bed. I used the relax feature too. The only difference I could see in the app is that it adds a restoration feature which I like that shows a graph of how much the heart rate dropped below resting which is restorative. Last night I did well and my resting heart rate was 14 % of my sleep and 86% was below resting heart rate. I know I did not wake up other than for a bathroom break. I slept 7 hours and 6 minutes which is rare. So I don't know why I still feel tired. I will miss looking at that feature, but it is not worth spending the monthly fee to use it. I tried their workouts and was not real impressed and do not want to have to do them on my cell phone or tablet.
I just did a test on Bodybuilding.com to see which body type I was and it came out to ectomorph and endomorph. It gave suggestions for training and said to lift heavy and not to do long weight lifting workouts that could burn too many calories and I wouldn't build as much muscle. Here is the link:

Valerie, maybe that is why those Bulletproof people have all of this stuff to help focus and stuff. I need a few carbs. Just cannot do it. I think it is a good diet for people that are trying to not have cancer growth and people with insulin issues, but not for everyone. It is my understanding that it takes a couple of weeks at least to get past the nausea and stuff. My husband did at first. I had to give him fiber tablets and stuff. I don't think of it as a nutrition program that most people can, or should live on all of the time unless it is really needed.
Regular Advil makes me sleepy for some reason. I tried a powdered drink I got at Walmart that had magnesium, a bit of melatonin, and another ingredient that I think started with gaba...... Anyway there was 6 packets and I took one each night and it did not do much for how much sleep I got and it did the usual that melatonin does for me and caused me to have nightmares every night.
I am sorry the Shingrix made you feel so bad. I had a low grade fever for a day and felt like I do if I am coming down with something, but it didn't last long.

Carolyn, nice work on Low Impact Upper Body Trisets. I had contemplated the lower body from this last week.
I took Advil for bed last night because my knees were pretty achy. Felt okay today though. I love having my bathroom done. It looks so much better. Other than adding the extra room, we have not done much with remodeling upstairs. The carpet needs to go and new put in or something. We could do flooring in the bedroom that is my workout room because it is over the garage. The bath and add on room is over the kitchen and dining. I am not sure what I want in there.
