Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/8

Judy, I tried aero bars on my road bike but I need the "cheater" brake levers and there isn't room for them. I have a short upper torso and it's a bit of a stretch to reach the reg brake levers. I never thought about adding them to the spin bike .I get posture fatigue and that gives you more possible positions.
ETA our mt bikes have hydraulic brakes. you would not believe how much that helps on downhills. it's like power brakes on your car compared to non power. I used to get cramping and general aches from pumping the brakes going downhill. with the power assist ones, it's a 100x better. plus the brakes work so much better. more sensitive and also more effective. I would never skip these if you are buying a new bike.
not sure what we'll do with the bat. he's in a sealed box in the freezer. will probably go in the trash pick up tomorrow.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did both Sweat workouts (46:13).

Deb, there is a very good recipe for fish cheeks in my Szechuan cookbook. Lots of fresh ginger and garlic in the stir fry. Spicy. Do you want me to send you a copy? I will check epicurious as well to see if they have something similar. I'm from Minnesota and have definitely had my share of wall-eyed pike. I love fish if it is fresh and not overcooked. I have mixed feelings about the ending of the GW and will be interested to hear what you have to say.

Indeed, Valerie, what does one do with a dead bat? I guess just bury it some place. Hope you are not coming down with anything.

Diane Sue, Micah is adorable. I, too, hope those tornadoes stay away from all populated areas. I saw some of the footage from storm chasers and they look really scary. I did not buy all of the RWH dvds because I knew my knees could not take all the impact. I haven't done anything from Xtrain in a long time. I did the 3 month rotation when it first was released and then did a couple I particularly enjoyed regularly after that.

A seminar this noon on "Domestic Discourse" 1830s-1850s in England. Interesting chapter on the doctrine of separate spheres for men/women so it will be good.

Good evening ladies!

I may take a rest day after all my workouts today. This morning I did a SB workout that I missed from last week. Cardio Barre 4 with my ankle weights :) and I really liked it. Then our lunch workout was 21d Barre Legs. I do not need anlke weights with this one. It really is not your typical barre workout. It is a tough one but when you think barre this would not come to mind. When I arrived home my husband wanted to work out so to keep him motivated I said sure and did RWH Circuit Upper Body. I will sleep really good tonight.

Deb...we are very happy with the internet speed we have. Glad you called your cable company. Hopefully, it will all work out for you. I have NEVER been able to do the Lotus pose! Good for you trying out that hip opening. It felt so good when I was done. Thinking I may do the Ruthless workouts in the morning with a SB target afterwards until I see something that I like. As you may have noticed, I have such a hard time sticking with a rotation. I get bored so easily. For some reason SB inspires me and I seem to stick with her rotations.

Judy..how did you like the Bis and Tris? I love that one! Such a quick right to the point target. I have thrown it on at the end of a workout a few times. I have the print outs of all 6 weeks. Let me know if you would like them. Lately I have been saving her challenges. I have yet to repeat them.

Diane Sue...8 grand children! That is wonderful. I can't wait to have my 1st but unfortunatley, that is a ways off. Micah is so cute! Thanks for sharing the picture. I heard on the news about the recent tornados. So scary.

Valerie...I am sorry but I find it quite comical the bat is in your freezer! Hilarious. Maybe not for you though.

Lynda...the seminar sounds very interesting. Can't wait to read your overview.

Have a great night all!

Deb, they are using the cows for meat. They have certain ones that are for breeding and certain ones they plan on eating. They have traded some females. I am not sure what they are going to do with two bulls. Beef is a baby right now. The smallest one till the new calves come. I would imagine one of the bulls will go or be traded. They have shared their bull with the neighbors and borrowed the neighbors. I don't think that they have milked the cows. I don't know why. I will come back with that recipe. There are so many good sauces that make veggies yummy. I had sunshine sauce over roasted asparagus tonight with a beef stir fry. I use my hard strap that came with the treadclimber when I am on it. When my older Polar F7 watch has a battery in it , it works with the hard strap. It is non coded. My Bluetooth transmitter worked with the treadclimber last time I used the Treadclimber. That Polar has to be sent somewhere because it is not set up for self battery changing. I think I prefer the older hard straps to wearing a wet strap.

Valerie, I have had to put squirrels and birds in the trash but never thought about a bat. My dog Mudd used to bring me all kinds of presents to the door. I was worried one time when we had a raccoon in our yard. Animal control said it probably lost it's home due to construction and they were vicious.

Lynda, thanks re. Micah. It is such a happy little guy and busy. The only fish that is good is fresh fish. Most of the stuff that you pick up in the grocery stores smells really fishy and it should not smell like that. I am anxious to try the Sweat workouts. My knee has been bothering me so I was not real interested in the workouts with all of the plyo moves and jumping. I realized today that I might need to lighten the tension on the Treadclimber a bit because even though it is low impact it sure had the back of my knee hurting. Now I realize that that is why last week I had experienced the same thing. I was fine today till the Treadclimber. I used to use it a lot. I buy workouts and will do the rotation then I always have favorites I continue to use and some I don't use unless I forget why I did not care for it.

I forgot to mention I also used Mother's Day Money and ordered 21 Day Fix Extreme minus those containers.

Lorie, that is a lot of workouts :) They have had some pretty bad tornados. Not only here but some other states too. They are saying possibility of severe weather this weekend. Hope it is not too bad since I have the grandchildren. I may be taking them out to my daughters to use their shelter. Only thing is their sister who is in college will be by herself so I might just go to their house if that comes up. They don't have a shelter but the lower level of their house is built into the side of the hill. They use the laundry room for a shelter. I do enjoy my grandchildren :) I am blessed to have them all near.

Valerie-Having the aero bars on my spin bike has helped a lot, especially for my longer rides. I move around and change positions frequently during the longer rides.

Lori=I loved the Bi & Tri target! I agree, it's quick and to the point! Yes, I would love the challenge weeks that you have printed out, if it isn't too much trouble. Thank you, and thanks for the updated Live spreadsheet!

Diane Sue-I hope you don't have a tornado this weekend. That is scary.

Yep, the bat is in there in his own personal taped up box... I'll wait until morning so he is still frozen at garbage pick up time.. ordinarily, I'd bury one but this might have needed saving until we found out for sure no one needed him for any kind of research.

Deb, I made the Sunshine sauce from the Whole 30 cookbook. Theirs is an adaptation of one in the Well Fed Cookbook by Melissa Joulwan. It calls for sunflower butter but she says you can use almond butter and that is what I did this time.
Makes 1 cup
1/2 cup unsweetened sunflower seed butter (or almond butter)
1/2 cup coconut milk (canned)
juice of 1 lime
1 Tbs Coconut Aminos (optional)
1 clove garlic minced
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl and stir to combine. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Barbell Upper Body. I really like this one a lot. Minimal equipment changes, especially since I have the 2 body bars that I can switch between and use the heavy one for deadlifts etc.

Valerie, at least you can still cross your legs. I can barely put one on top of the other and forget about getting the other one up after. I can't picture how you got the gash in your leg...did you fall with the bike or getting off of it? I have no idea if we have hydraulic brakes on our bikes...( is that dumb or what?). I know that we don't have to pump them, and they are really sensitive so maybe we do? The trash sounds like a good place for your bat. Still surprised that no one wanted to test it. I'm now hooked on Scott & Bailey....thanks! :)

Lynda, That seminar sounds interesting. Thanks for looking up those recipes...yes, send what you can. As for the GW....I was getting pretty confused on what was going on in that trial....could not keep up with the plot line and at one point I was getting pretty aggravated...but I liked the very end...and how they tied it up...

Has anyone else that is watching The Good Wife not seen the last episode?

Judy, I like that Hip Opener a lot and it really helps. I have done it twice now, right after whatever workout I do, I hope to keep it up. Maybe one day I will be able to sit with my legs crossed again. :)

Lori, I can understand why you would take a rest day today! Is that 21 DF barre workout from the original set or the extreme? My cable company said I am paying for the least expensive speed which gives you "up to 15 mbps"....I get 17.71 so he said that is even over. The next level is only up to 20...how are others getting over 100? Anyway, I tried Live using the lower quality one and didn't have any problem yesterday, so maybe I will keep trying that unless it becomes a problem. Thanks for updating the spreadsheet, that is so nice of you to do for everyone.

Diane Sue, that is a cute picture! Wow...8 grandchildren, no wonder your Sundays are busy. :). I can't change the battery in my hard strap either, don't know what I will do once it goes. So scary about those tornados, and to have to plan where to go for shelter. Thanks for that sauce recipe...so you just pour it over the vegetables? do you heat it first?

Josie, how is your friend doing? Is she home now?

A workout, then class tonight with Kylee,

Take care,

Deb, I just pour it over. It does rhicken when cold a bit. If you put it on warm veggies it will soften. For raw veggies it is a perfect dip cold.

Deb, the large front ring that the chain goes over.. the ring has teeth on it that the chain catches on when it turns.. Your bike probably has 2-3 rings in the front, and more rings in the back. the ring itself ran into the back of my calf when I got off the bike after going pretty fast. mt bikes don't have a guard over the front of the chain. I have a line of punctures about 4 inches long. it's scabbed over and looking pretty good already. it was pretty messy because we'd been riding hard so I was all pumped up and it bled a lot at first. not complaining, that cleaned out the wound. I don't know if road bikes come with hydraulic brakes. I never knew about them until the new mt bike, but for steep bumpy descents they are really nice.

I can still sit with my legs crossed but my knees are more comfortable up higher. when I see people whose knees rest on the ground I am amazed. my hips never did allow that direction of motion. so for me, a lot of yoga is hopeless. Glad you like Scott and Bailey... it's the same writer think her name is Sally Wainwright. she has such a good ear for normal conversations.. and a nice combination of comedy and drama and real life.

I have the last season of TGW to watch whenever it comes out on Netflix or streaming. don't worry about spoilers. I accidentally read some info already.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Live PHAT 2 (45 min.). Surprised at how sweaty I got just doing weights.

Here is the recipe for RED-COOKED FISH SLICES OR CHEEKS

1 lb fish slices or cheeks (cut the fish into slices about 1/2 inch thick, about 3 inches long, and 1 inch wide). Place in bowl.

4 scallions Clean the scallions, then cut them, both white part and green, into 1/2 inch lengths. Add the scallions to the fish.

1/2 inch piece of fresh ginger Peel the ginger, then slice it into shreds, about 1/8 inch wide, the width of a wooden matchstick. Add them to the fish.

1 tsp. granulated sugar Add these next 6 ingredients to the fish and mix well.
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 Tbsp. corn starch
3 Tbsp. soy sauce
1 Tbsp. rice wine or cooking sherry (dry)
1 tsp. sesame oil

6-8 cloves of garlic Smash the garlic cloves with the flat side of a cleaver or knife, then peel. Chop the garlic into small pieces, the size of a match head.

COOKING:

6 Tbsp. peanut oil Heat your wok or pan over a high flame for 15 seconds, then add oil. The oil will be ready when the first tiny bubbles form and a few small wisps of smoke appear.

When the oil is ready, toss in the chopped garlic and stir for about 30 seconds. Don't be alarmed if the garlic turns brown right away; just make sure it doesn't turn black.

Quickly add 1 Tbsp. hot pepper paste (this is where the red color comes from) and stir another 30 seconds.

Add the fish slices with marinade and stir fry for 2 min.

Add 1 Tbsp. of rice wine vinegar and stir fry for another 30 seconds.

Add 3 Tbsp. of water, stir fry for another 30 seconds, cover the pan, and allow the fish too cook for a final 2 min. Serve immediately over rice.

This is from Mrs. Chiang's Szechwan Cookbook, one of my favorite Chinese cookbooks.

Lori, thanks for all your work on the spreadsheet!

The seminar yesterday was both fascinating and infuriating. We read part of a chapter that focused on a very popular woman writer from the early 19th c., Mrs. John Sandford, and her book, Woman in her Social and Domestic Character. Basically, this is a book that places the burden on women to create domestic harmony, even if she knows herself to be mentally superior to her husband and he is both inclined to make bad choices, to neglect her, ignore her. The thing is, even when she is recommending subjugation, she sounds like there is a repressed anger in her writing. For example, "Censorship, is indeed, always severe on female talent, and not infrequently is a woman prejudged a slattern, because reputed a genius. Slovenly attire, an ill-conducted household, and an ill-arranged table are in the mind of many identified with female acquirement." Or, "Knowledge is not to elevate her [woman] above her station, or to excuse her from the discharge of its most trifling duties. It is to correct vanity, and repress pretension. It is to teach her to know her place and her functions; to make her content with the one, and willing to fulfill the other. She will not seek distinction, and therefore will not meet with disappointment." This book went through many editions both in England and America. So get to work, ladies, on all those utterly trifling duties, or you may be deemed a genius AND a slattern. As one of my favorite poets, Adrienne Rich, says in "Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law," "A thinking woman sleeps with monsters."

That's all I have for today. Enjoy--or not!

Today I had planned on cardio but since my knee is still hurting I did Lift it Hit it Chest, Shoulders, Triceps with Abs 1 and adding the stretch on . 51 minutes, 204 calories. I followed this with Kelly Coffey Athletic Conditioning #1 stretch workout 27 minutes. I am dragging today. I went to bed early enough but between coughing and that stomach issue again I did not sleep. I had the same thing happen not long ago and I couldn't figure out if I ate something bad. I had made everything fresh. The same yesterday. My daughter told me that because of how long it lasted it was probably something that I ate. I finished off that Silk unsweetened almond coconut milk that I mentioned awhile back as being really sweet. I am wondering if it was that. I mixed it into my protein powder with the canned coconut milk. It was a busy morning and I had to hit the bank and store after taking the children to school. I had to go buy toothpaste for my 5 year old grandson that was not pink with princesses on it and was not minty. He refused to brush his teeth this morning. I tried to convince him that it was pink bubble gum. Didn't work. Tonight I have to figure out how I pick them up at 5:30 get them fed and to their church for Awards at 6:30 . I am hoping my knee feels better because Friday and Saturday I want to try Ice Upper and the Low Impact Sweat workouts. They come tomorrow afternoon.

Deb, we had 50 mbps and ours would not stream half the time. We upgraded to 100 and we still get buffering even though the test shows us almost to 100. I don't get it. As it is I get high traffic signal alerts even early in the a.m. with everything off but my computer. We upgraded because we would purchase movies and not be able to watch them unless I downloaded them to the computer and ran it with the hdmi cable. I am not willing to pay the additional fee for 200 mbps which is the top and next level because it should work. We even had to purchase a new modem and a new router.

Valerie, I have tried and tried to work on those knees but it is not happening. I know pushing too hard to get in some of those positions actually can aggravate them. I can't do those side plank snow angels on one side because my I just cannot lift my leg and the one on the floor hurts. I have tried every time only to end up modifying the move. Body mechanics are just not there for it.

Lynda, I find that in many cultures women are not respected much at all. They are there more in the position of servitude. A Christian based nation tends to have more respect for women and what they do and their accomplishments.

Lori, yes, thank you for keeping the live list up to date. I know I will come back to it eventually. That makes it so much easier. If I didn't have your list I would have had a much harder time deciding what to do.

Good afternoon ladies.

No workout yet. I was planning a rest day anyways so I may keep to that. Was up late last night sick to my stomach. Yesterday, a crazed man attacked two people (one died) at their home in Taunton, MA then stole a car drove to the local Taunton mall crashed into Macy's, attacked a few more people. Then went into our Bertucci's restaurant next to Macys, took a kitchen knife stabbed a server several times, she will survived the attacked but he killed a guest trying to help her. Fortunately, there was an off duty law enforcement man having dinner who ended up shooting and killing the man in the restaurant. Horrible situation. If it wasn't for this Police Officer who knows how many victims there would have been. So very sad.

Judy....not a problem at all. I will email them over to you. I really liked this challenge and may do it again. Although she most likely will have a Summer Challenge.

Diane Sue..I think you will like the 21D Extreme since you like Autumn. She does not bother me. I do have the containers and did very well using her program (diet and all) last year. I lost a few lbs but they seem to be creeping back on. With my husband home all the time I find I am not eating as clean as I usually do. Hope your knees feel better soon. That is why I started keeping track of her Live workouts. Her library was getting too large for me to remember them all and it was starting to get hard to select a workout.

Deb...the 21D Barre was an add on I believe from the original set. It is a great workout. We have done it a ton of times (the ladies love it) and we all still feel the burn. if the lower quality works for you then I agree - save the money and see how it goes.

Valerie...they say if you can sit with your knees crossed on the floor and get up without using your hands then this says a lot about your health. I can do this so not sure what it means. Has anyone heard this or did I dream it? Sometimes I wonder!

Lynda...Phat 2 is awesome and yes makes me sweat too! Not what I was expecting from your seminar. Wow! I must have missed the fish conversation. What are Cheeks?

Have a good night all! Hi to Josie and Caitlin!

Lorie, that is terrible. It is hard to understand what evil lurks in some people's minds. Just going off like that. That is like that lady we had here that just drove through a small town parade celebration killing people. No one would have expected something like that. What happened to the times when we all felt pretty safe and we did not hear of such things very often.
I tried the containers with Hammer and Chisel and could not get motivated to use it. I even downloaded an app to check off the different colors as I used them. I thought that I might like it but it is awkward when putting together my own recipes and trying to use them. I felt stuck with bland foods or Beach Body recipes.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I decided to take a rest day. It was beautiful here, sunny, warm, maybe spring has finally shown up.

Diane Sue, thanks again for the recipe...I will try it ...I believe I have all the ingredients, except for the coconut aminos which are optional. ( I don't think I have ever seen them anywhere, but I have not looked).

Valerie, I must have really bad hip issues, I can't even put my foot across on to my other leg when sitting...I guess it's time to concentrate on that hip opener stretch.

Lynda, thanks for the recipe, I copied it to my recipe file on the computer....I think we will try some of them this weekend, or maybe tomorrow night. I will have to get a few of the items first. I guess we have to be happy that the times have sure changed since that book was written. :).

Diane Sue, I hope you feel better....do you think what you ate was spoiled somehow? Funny about the pink toothpaste. Kids! I don't understand how you can have streaming issues with the high mbps you have...maybe a call to your provider and complain...I also cannot do any side planks...I do one, and fall over...I wish someone would show a modification for those.

Lori, what happened with that guy is horrible! Those poor families.:(. I went over to Ebay to see if someone is selling that barre DVD....is it only 30 minutes? I also heard about getting up from a seated position on the floor without using your hands...I think it is some sort of fitness test. I don't think you have to have your legs crossed on the floor, but could be wrong. oh, I see Judy posted a link...now I am going to have to try those...or maybe I don't want to....As for the "cheeks"....John got 11 pounds of frozen walleye cheeks from a patient....and I was asking if anyone knew how to cook them. Apparently they are considered a delicacy...:). I don't know what I would do without your PDF of the Live workouts...so glad you did that!

Judy, thanks for that link...now I can find out how NOT fit I am....LOL.

Hi to Josie,

A workout, and maybe garden work today if it stays as nice as it was yesterday.

Take care,

Lori what a terrible event.. all too common these days though. I often wonder if this kind of thing happens more often, or if news coverage jumps on it immediately so it just seems more frequent. we didn't used to get news from all over just like it was next door.

I will try that "getting up" test. I remember us doing it in gradeschool now that I read about it. not the same thing, but reminds me of cathe's
"levitation holds"... never could do those , even a little bit. somehow those feel more about body proportion.

Lynda that fish recipe sounds yummy. the kind of thing I absolutely love. I would try to go with less oil or add more vegies. I've never had walleye cheeks... but I remember walleye from the Midwest. I think any mild boneless fish would do.

Our reception yesterday went well. the funeral was simple and not too long, lovely weather. everyone came to our house for a couple hours after for wine and snacks and I will say, DH and I did a great job. we never did anything like this before. it was pleasant, relaxing and still lively. we didn't know everyone before this but it came together well. more tired today than I thought, and we have a Montana trip looming in a couple days so back to the stores for more shopping and cooking. UGH.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did cardio core circuit live (45 min.).

Lori, that sounds awful. I wonder if they will find a motive for this man's killing spree. I agree with Valerie that we probably did not hear about these crimes in the past because news remained less immediately accessible. I still remember when the Viet Nam war "came home" with filming being done on a regular basis. Not like earlier wars where you had to rely on newsreels in movie theaters and war correspondents. It took a very long time for everyone to learn the scale of the carnage in the death camps and to see footage of skeletal survivors from Europe and POW camps in Japan after WWII. Now we see the dead bodies within hours of an airstrike or suicide bombing in some faraway place.

Judy, thanks for the link. I guess I will have to try this out and see if it is hard/impossible for me to do.

Deb, it is so beautiful here today. I wish we could have a full week of this kind of weather, but it sounds like another cold spell this weekend.

Valerie, I bet you would like this recipe as well, but I don't think your husband would. The hot pepper paste makes it pretty spicy. That sounds like a very nice service and gathering afterward.

Diane Sue, I hope you are feeling better soon.
