Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/8

Hi everyone--

Housemax for me this morning. My younger son is coming to golf with three friends (he's a member of the Taconic golf course here), so we will be having a sausage fest later. I also made a big rice and vegetable salad from the Silver Palate cookbook. Time-consuming but an excellent side dish with grilled sausages.

Deb, I had chicken pox when I was little and didn't want to get shingles because I had heard terrible stories from my mom about how painful they can be. She had a friend with shingles that encircled her waist and my mom said she really became suicidal from the pain. I think I got the vaccine when I was 60 and it was covered by insurance. I always get the flu shot and I have had both of the pneumonia shots.

Judy, my husband takes Acyclovir and doesn't have any side effects from it. Maybe it's the shingles that are affecting you. I hope a lot of sleep and rest will help and you have caught it before it has a chance to spread.

Lori, I think I have been in one Bertucci's a long time ago when we went east for a soccer tournament. Really good pizza! They must be a good company if you have been with them that long. I wish we had a Bertucci's around here.

Diane Sue, that sounds awful about your brother. I will have to look up that syndrome. I thought it was somehow related to Tylenol given to children. I'm probably just confusing it with something else.

Have fun, Valerie!

Today I did Ice Low Impact Pre-mix 15, Cardio 2, Blizzard Blast, Core 2, stretch. 51 minutes, 295 calories.hr. 112/144. I got Ice Boot camp today so I did the Muscle Meltdown Biceps, 15 minutes, 85 calories. Total time was 66 minutes, 380 calories.
Muscle Meltdown Biceps
Giant sets 3 rnds 12 reps
standing curl 20#; 15#;; 15#
hammer curl 20#; 15#; 15
preacher curl 15#; 15#; 15#
incline hammer curl 15#; 15#; 15#
concentration curl 20#; 15#; 15#

Deb, I am glad the pain has left. I remember Cathe doing workouts that went with the step and high step at one time. Eventually I will probably get most of the workouts. I can see options for using the lower without the jumping and using premixes from to the mat. I like kickboxing. I just chose the ones I thought I would immediately like. I like using the step and saw that there was even a no upper option in the Bootcamp and it looks like it would be easy to modify where necessary. As far as muscle melt down, they could be done without the dvd's. The manual has the moves and they seem to all be 12 reps and giant sets 3 times. It is more fun doing them with the video though.

Judy, I would think getting plenty of rest would give your body a chance to mend itself. That is good that you got some sleep.

Valerie, I remember going to a Walgreens when we lived 100 miles from my doctor and paying for a flu shot so I did not have to drive the distance. There were a lot of elderly people waiting to get the shingles vaccine. At the time I wondered why. They had signs up for the shingles vaccine being available.
It is interesting how we get into a bad habit with body mechanics and have to correct it or have problems increase. I am constantly trying to remember all of the things I have read. It is easy to forget till a problem arises. I have read that a lot of problems occur because of imbalance with the posterior chain.
