Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/6

Hi Everyone,

Today I did a Spinerval. I was dragging as I didn't sleep well at all last night. I felt better after working out. I took a short nap this afternoon and hopefully will sleep better tonight.

Deb-How is your back doing?

Lori-Nice job with the workouts this morning! That's great that your son's weights arrived. It sounds like he will enjoy them and get a lot of use out of them with Body Beast. That was so cute about Chester and your wallet.

Valerie-Great bike ride! Like Lori, I used to ride outside all the time. I miss those days.

Diane Sue-I'm sorry about your hip. You did a great job with the workouts today!

Carolyn-Thank you! I've been trying to alternate strength and cardio days and not over do anything. RWH Legs is a tough one! Great job!

Judy

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Toasted Trisets Upper Body, 53 minutes 227 calories. This was a great workout! No fancy stuff, and the core exercises were all new ones, ( at least new to me) that I had never seen before. I believe there is a Total Body Trisets DVD workout? I need to revisit that too.

Diane Sue, sorry that your back is still hurting. Maybe you should just do stretching for a few days, no weights etc. That is lucky that you left your wallet at the vet, and not somewhere like Walmart...and that you discovered it before you got to the check out.

Valerie, too bad the weather/road conditions did not cooperate for your skiing. I don't use our broiler in the oven at all. My friend ( the one that passed away) had purchases an air fryer after one of the nurses told her how great they were. I don't think she ever tried it.

Carolyn, ok, now that makes sense on doing the 2 warm ups. :).

Lori, that is strange about Gigi and the fire. I hope you are able to keep her away but she is able to be with you outside. LOL on Chester and the "wallet caper"..:).

Judy, sorry about your sleep. I hope the nap helped. My back was better, but then it started hurting on one side again for some reason.

Take care,

Deb my oven broiler gets used rarely. if the food is high up enough to broil, it's above the door window. you can't see anything. if you open the door it immediately turns "broil " off. it goes back on when you shut the door but overall, a stupid system. things go from not done to incinerated so quickly!
I've read a little about the air fryers and reviews were very positive but I am not a huge fan of fried food. I resist buying a special little appliance for everything. the blender, food processor, toaster oven, stick blender, waffle iron, slow cooker, etc. on and on. the spiralizer is the last thing I tried and overall not happy with it. I didn't get uniform pieces of anything I've tried. ended up using a knife to trim left over pieces. easier to do all with the knife. I have very good knife skills! I will pass on the instant hot pot and the air fryer. some of the list above gets used a lot but I'd say it's about 50/50 for useful long term.

I thought animals instructively backed away from hot things, but no. our kitty used to singe off ends of his whiskers walking behind the wood stove. Too funny about chester and the missing wallet.

We are getting to the end of skiing for us. we are not good enough skiers to ski most open slopes so use roads because the steepness is controlled. this time of year you get lots of snow alternating with bare sections and the roads don't go that high.

It took awhile to decide what to do for a workout. My grandson came by after the first few minutes to use my printer again. More forms to print up for a job :) My neck is much better, but the back and hip still hurt. What I don't get is both hips feel like I did a tough glute workout> I keep looking over my notes to see what could have set it off. Anyway, I started with Kelly's body design warm up and cardio bootcamp, heart rate average 132, max 167, 110 calories, 17 minutes. I then did X10 low impact only (no w/u or stretch), 12 minutes, heart rate average 138, max 167, 79 calories, I went on to do Kelly's Total Body kickbox workout 1 since I knew it was not a lot of jumping, 29 minutes, 200 calories, heart rate average 147, max 176. I finished off with the Sarah Beth Yoga from YouTube for low back pain 31 minutes, 68 calories. Total time was 90 minutes, calories 457.
I was a bit worried about my low back when carting groceries and the big packs of water around yesterday. It feels better after the stretching and workouts. My neck feels way better, but I could tell with the tiny bit of weight work in X10 that I am not ready for much yet.

Lori, I have started many times with the idea that I was going to do something short and light and ended up doing a much longer workout. It is funny how that happens. I am hoping for some pictures. I did not take my camera to the shower and her fiance came to the tea room with flowers for my granddaughter. My daughter says she does not know how to download and send the pictures. I just have access to a couple that were on facebook. LOL on Chester and the wallet. That is too bad Gigi is not afraid of the fire. It seems my dogs have all managed to burn their noses (or at least I think that is what happened) at one time or another. Gertie, had a red spot on the tip of her nose once that looked like she had burned it. My guess was the oven or the barbecue. Anyway, when I start to open the oven she moves across the room. Not that you want Gigi to burn herself. We had a fire pit lit when we went camping and Gertie did not bother with it. That is great that your son likes his new weights and he is following in your steps with loving to workout :)

Judy, I am so tired today, hoping maybe a nap this afternoon. I nearly fell asleep doing the long holds at the end of the yoga session today, and then she started doing the just lying there on the floor and I grabbed my foam roller and used it for a bit to wake back up.

Deb, Total Body Trisets is on the Low Impact series. I usually always did it as an upper and lower split. I left my wallet at home. I just got to the vet and found I did not have it and had to go home and get it and go back to the vet. It just would have been much worse if I had been shopping and then discovered that I did not have it.

Valerie, my oven has two different broil settings. I have used it a few times and use the lower temp setting for it. I figure if I get the insta pot and it works really well for things like steaming. I may get rid of my small steamer/ rice cooker. Although that has come in handy for things for just me. Really for steaming the insert in a regular pot works the best of all though. It would replace my slow cooker for sure. It is ready for the trash. So, I would not be adding an extra item. I would like a smaller waffle iron because I have one of those big George Forman Grills that I have to keep in the laundry cabinet and it has my waffle iron grids on it. For years I used a very old waffle iron that my mother had got as a wedding present. It made the best nice thin crisp waffles. It finally quit though. I like to make protein waffles.

Today I did JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster Walk. That was 210 calories with average heart rate of 131 and maximum heart rate of 155.

Deb, Total Body Trisets is a part of the Low Impact Series. I like that workout and have done it many times. I can understand why you liked the Live version.

Valerie, it’s funny that you mentioned the air fryer now. So many friends are raving about it that I decided to research it to understand the fascination. I put it in the same category as the insta-pot. It’s not for me. I stopped frying food so many years ago that I never have cravings for it. The air fryer wouldn’t get much use here.

Diane Sue, it looks like we started posting at the same time today. Good job on the workout and taking care not to aggravate your hip. My knee is bothering me this week and I’m trying to be careful with my cardio.

Hello to Judy and Lori.

Carolyn that is my thought too. if I condition my tastes to like fat fried foods, I may want them more than just at home. I never have enjoyed them so will skip it at least for now. the only meat we do is chicken breasts and fish fillets so not sure an insta pot would be helpful. Yes, diane sue, those are a couple single use appliances I forgot to mention..... rice cooker, pressure cooker, George foreman grill. never bought them. must be others I'm not thinking off. electric frying pan. I had one of those once a long time ago.

we rode the tree farm this morning in 2 hours, a full circuit. used to take us 2.5 hours. we thought it was going to rain, so we hurried.

I'm still on a quest for another kind of bar. I bought DH 2 kinds of Lara bars, and they failed miserably. I ate one yesterday that was crunchy and was so-so/OK, but the one today was soft and unbaked seeming. I have a Zing one for him tomorrow, and a different Luna one. I am doing a Costco run today . wish they had samples of Kirkland brand. packages are too big to buy a box untested.

Carolyn, sometimes we just have to listen to our bodies and tame the workouts down a bit. Going from Z cut and metabolic workouts, to lots more jumping workouts probably set off a bit of something before I tweaked it with something else. There was an uncomfortable move that I was having a hard time with on Tracey Long's Core movements and I am wondering if I twisted something wrong there. I didn't even do the the lower body portion of the bottoms up on that dvd because that was the workout that was messed up. Anyway the move had you flip over and a foot went through and then some how you ended up in a kind of bridge position with arm overhead. I did do this a second time and was not getting it at first and I slowed it down. So, that may have been it because I lost my balance in the process.

Valerie, I also had a rotisserie oven. I found the only thing it worked for was a turkey breast and that was only as long as it was small enough to fit inside and turn. I Tried roast and it did not turn out well. I never tried anything else though that I can remember. I think I tried some veggies in the basket as it turned. Anyway, my son had got it for me and everyone was into those, so I dragged it around for a long time till I got rid of it. A huge space hog. I also had a Nuwave oven that my daughter gave me that air baked. It was handy when our oven had quit and worked in our travel trailer, but I finally got rid of it when we moved here. It didn't really brown stuff. I could make muffins and cookies in it for the grandchildren. As far as appliances I use my slow cooker often for soups and family dinners. So, I just want the Insta Pot to fill it's spot and maybe do some other things too since there are so many Insta Pot recipes around. That being said, I even change up how I cook some of the dishes in the Whole 30 Fast and Easy Cookbook. Some things just seem silly and if I have already chopped up sweet potato pieces in the refrigerator, I may just use that rather than rice the veggie. Same with cauliflower. Not much difference in just cooking it up and dumping the topping on it. The same with lettuce wraps. I can never get the leaves to wrap nicely and they fall apart when eating. I just chop up the lettuce and put the toppings in a bowl. It is a handheld salad to me.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, my whole body was/is aching. Back, legs, hips, etc. Not sure what is up with that.

Valerie, we have so many appliances and cooking gadgets in the basement that we never use, same reason I hesitate to purchase any more too. Too bad about the skiing, but now you will be able to ride more. I still find that the Kind bars, ( oatmeal is my favorite), are the best I have found.

Diane Sue, it's the Big Day! Hope all goes well.

Hi to Judy, Lori, & Carolyn,

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Boot Camp, from the Intensity Series. It was my first time doing it. I had to modify a few of the moves. My knee started bothering me a little afterwards so I am going to stay with upper body and perhaps a Jessica Smith workout today.

Deb-I'm sorry :( It sounds like you might need a few rest/easy days and maybe you could schedule a massage and see if that helps.

Valerie-We like the Kirkland brand bars. Costco has a good return policy so if you bought a box and tried one you could return the rest if you didn't like them. I did not like the Lara bars either.

Diane Sue-Hope everything goes well today! I was really tired yesterday too. I took some melatonin last night and I slept a little better.

Carolyn-I usually don't have knee issues but mine is bothering me too. I feel like I strained something in the boot camp workout. I hope yours is better today.

Hi to Lori!

Judy

Judy are the Kirkland ones almost the same as Kind bars? I know I could buy/return and I’ve done it before but I don’t like to do it. They sample so many food items I keep thinking they’ll do it with those bars. I’m looking more for DH who likes Luna bars but is tired of chocolate brownie. He doesn’t like the other Luna flavors much. will eat Kind bars but so -so about them . I frankly can’t figure out what he wants so I try one of a variety of bars until he likes something. Remember the commercial about “let’s get Mikey to try it”. Well that’s what this is!
Lara bars texture is raw/unbaked. I have a Zing one and a few different Luna flavors. Deb I have not seen an oatmeal kind bar but Kind has a huge choice of flavors so I’ll look closer. They had some dried fruit coconut ones I liked . You would think he’d be able to explain what it is he wants but no.
Deb that sound like a light day with yoga or stretch

Its a trial and error process with small appliances. I try to think before wasting space on another but I fell for the spiralizer anyway.

Valerie- the Kirkland nut bars are very similar to the Kind bars. I don't blame you for not wanting to return something. It's too bad that they don't offer samples.

Judy, I wonder what is was with that workout. I remember some of the moves being seeming pretty intense. I have not done that one in years. I am still tired and not sleeping. I realized when I woke last night that I am waking when the Advil wears off. I dont want to take more than one dose, and only at night. Odd, I cant seem to nap when I try.

Deb, I had a couple of days where it felt like everything was hurting. I am glad it is only the right hip now. Yes, the wedding is today :)

Valerie, my husband pretty much likes the bars like Zone perfect that taste like candy bars. It seems Luna has a lot of diet sweeteners if I remember right. Most of the no sugar or diet sweetener ones are chewy and have dates in them. Like RX and Lara. I found a new kids one that I had hoped the grandchildren woul love and ended up they didnt care too much for them. They were sweetened with dates and had oats in them. They were just okay. I wish the Primal kitchen ones didnt taste so much like stale nuts. With the collagen and nuts they could be a good choice.

I am going to take a total rest day today. My knee is still bothering me and I have decided to give it more rest. I am using ice and elevating it periodically. The discomfort is on the inside of my leg and my knee is stiff. I think I strained it with side lunges.

Diane Sue, have a wonderful day with the wedding and your family celebration.

This morning I did Kelly Coffey Cardio Pump, cardio workout #1, 31 minutes, heart rate average 130, max 155, 198 calories, met 5.8, 2,987 steps. I then did Fit Split Low Impact cardio, 28 minutes, heart rate average 128, max 157, met 5.8, 1,730 steps. I finished off with SB Barre Amped lower body stretch , 20 minutes, 44 calories. Total time was 79 minutes, 421 calories burned.

Carolyn, I hope your leg feels better after the rest.

Kind bars have a fairly short list of ingredients and mostly straight forward. Luna has a longer list of a slightly weirder things, but no diet sweeteners. I did not like Zone or Power.... tasted like sawdust as a main ingredient. I don't want "too sweet" but needs to have some sweetness. DH eats sweeter things but neither of us like weird gritty texture. I don't like the raw dough feel of lara bars. I don't like taffy/ sticky either. I have almost a whole box of Kind bars... I eat one if we hike or a ride so they last a while. next time I will try Kirkland. I am fine with wheat, soy, natural sugar sources as long as it's not over sweet. I really like nuts and dried fruit so this is more for DH to have other choice.s
Carolyn that is smart. take the rest day until it feels better. when something is already hurting, it's easy to move differently to protect the area, and then injure something else.
Deb, are you sure there is an oat based Kind bar? I looked this morning and did not see one. there are a LOT of flavors!

This morning I did Body Beast Build Shoulders and Jessica Smith Bonus Standing Abs (15 minutes) & Stronger Knees (20 minutes).
Tonight I felt like doing a little more so I did the 100 rep tricep and hip thrust challenges from XTrain.

Good morning all!! Have a lot going on with work this week. Started SB’s 2017 challenge because I did not care for this year’s Summer Challenge plus I have added in some KCM and Barlattes to mix things up.

Diane Sue ...what a beautiful bride!!!!

I’ll check in tonight. Just wanted to say hi since it has been a coupe of days!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, and I still have pain in my left hip, and my legs for some reason.

Here is a pic they sent me from Kylee and my recent Stress Event at the university...sorry they are so big....I think the first one is where she is getting a little tired of being petted...LOL, and is ready to go home...

Judy, that workout is tough. If I remember correctly, isn't it on the Muscle Endurance DVD? Good you slept a little better. When you take melatonin, how many mg's do you take? I have it but it didn;t seem to help when I was taking it...maybe my dose was too low.

Valerie, I get the Kind bars in a box, with I think 6 of them at a local discount grocery store. I tried the blueberry but did not like them as much as the oatmeal. This is the one I get:
https://www.kindsnacks.com/oats-honey-toasted-coconut-bar

Carolyn, I hope your knee is better today. Good that the ice helps.

Diane Sue, what beautiful pictures!

Lori, makes sense to do a rotation/challenge that you like, rather than plowing through one that you will dread!

Any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,
