Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/27

Deb, there is one of those restarants closer to us. We have eaten in that one though. It is not too far away, Kind of between my one of my daughters and our house. I believe there were two patrons who shot the shooter. Thankfully he didnt get a chance to shoot more people and I think the young girl that was was there with fanily and friends to celebrate her birthday will live, but will be going through a lot of pain and healing.
There is such a growing mental health problem. I wish it would stop. I have had that happen with my calorie burns. I used to get almost double what I do now. When I switch from my Fit Bit to Polar it is still low. I know I am working just as hard. I dont getnwhy sometimes a seemingly lower intensity workout sometimes gets a higher heart rate and burn than one I have done the same say that seems harder.

Today I pulled out an oldie for my cardio. I did Petra Kolber’s Bootcamp Boogie for 60 minutes and 385 calories burned. My average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 160. The workout included a 10 minute yoga stretch at the end.

Lori, thanks for the video clips. I hadn’t seen the rebounder links on VF. The Body Barre clip looked similar to a Linda Wooldridge dvd that I previewed yesterday. Some of the exercises are very similar.

Deb, maybe your calorie burn is lower for 30 minutes of cardio because your body is more efficient. I have read that as one becomes more fit you burn fewer calories for the same amount of activity.

Diane Sue, I’m really feeling my upper back today from the pull-ups in the Fit Tower Bootcamp workout. I’m sore, but in a good way.

Valerie, l’ve said it before, but I am amazed by your outdoor activities. And the wildlife! I can’t imagine myself in that type setting.

Hello to Judy. Have a wonderful day everyone.

I had my grandson 7 here today. I keep him 2 days a week during the summer and usually spend time enjoying games and fun things during the day. Today my husband was off though and he went to lunch and did some guy stuff. My husband set him up with a toolbox and they made some rubber band shooters. :) So, I got out and did errands and hit Walmart Super center which is always something I put off. It has been quite awhile so I had some things to stock up on. Today I just did Cardio Supersets from the Low Impact series, 43 minutes, heart rate average 126, max 162, 275 calories, 1,891 steps. I then did You Tube Yoga with Sarah Beth 10 minute Hip opener, 11 minutes, 29 calories. Total time 54 minutes, 304 calories. I also did some foam rolling before and after my workout. I was fine till I got out of the car at Walmart and my knee started throbbing. It is driving me nuts to have the painful areas move around. I was glad when I got through the store and post office so I could come home. I took some Excedrin that I had just purchased. I was reading about how much collagen one should use and several sources said for joints 30-50 grams :0 That is quite a lot compared to what is in most supplements. I have been using the capsules and having at least one scoop of Multi Collagen. I am going to try upping that a little. Considering most supplements in capsule form are more like 1000-2000 mg I was surprised. I think the powdered collagen is somewhat better. I also picked up some vitamin C as it helps the body utilize the collagen.

Carolyn, I do not know that workout. I have never done Petra Kolber's workouts. Nice that it included a yoga stretch. I will probably do the Bootcamp Fit tower sometime this week. I need to see how my knee is doing. I really do not get it hurting since I have not done much for lower body other than the light stuff that was on the Body Design light weight cardio. I thought that would be a start. I guess there was a little in today's workout too, but it was predominantly cardio. My hip is way better. just a little indication that it is still mending.

Valerie, I guess with the gravel that you would not see that much traffic. I am sure it makes the rides much more pleasant other than fighting the ride on gravel.

Diane Sue, Petra Kolber made quite a few dvds, but nothing recently. Total Fitness DVDS still has some of her DVDs with previews available. These days she has a podcast and is a wellness and motivational speaker. I think that I remember Cathe being on her podcast last year.

Good evening ladies,

Today was another rest day. I needed it. I still woke up with the intent to workout but within 15 mins I knew it was not happening.

Valerie...I am hearing ticks are bad this year. Although, every year they seem to be bad. So far so good with GiGi. We found one on her in the beginning of the season. Immediately changed her preventive medicine and all has been good sense. Nice ride yesterday.

Diane Sue....that is what I am thinking with the weights for home Interval. 15’s and 12’s. Hoping you knee is better soon. Sounds very fustrating. So nice to have your grandson 2x a week. I bet you love that. You still managed to get in a nice workout.

Deb...I believe adding in high rep upper in addition to heavy weights made a huge difference in my arms. I have never had large muscular arms but they are toned which is what I aim for. My husband mentioned I look like a woman that works out. That is good for me! Sometimes my apple watch reads low calorie burns too. Carolyn may be correct in your fit assesment.

Caroyln...yes I remember Petra and have done a couple of her workouts. When was she popular, in the late 90’s? I remember Cathe’s podcast with her. Bootcamp Boogie sounds like a fun workout. I love everything FitTower!

Hi to Judy!!!!!!!

Lori, sometimes we just need some rest more than working out. My vet switched to Frontline Gold for those that use that type of flea and tick medicine. I tried the one that was taken by mouth and it made her sick. So, I won't do that one. I am finding lately that I think the Heart Guard does not set well with her at first. This is the second month that I noticed that she seems a bit uncomfortable after I give it to her and keeps moving from place to place and lying down. It lasts a couple of days and then she perks back up.

Carolyn, I will have to check out some clips. For some reason I have a picture in my head of who I think that she is.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did S&S Ramped Up Upper Body, 47 minutes, 176 calories.

Diane Sue, that shooting and others are becoming so common..very scary. I consistently use my Polar for calorie burn recording...it just seems that with cardio it is a lot lower than I would expect. That is strange about the pain moving around. I hope your knee feels better today.

Carolyn, that sounds like great workout, especially with the yoga stretch at the end. Is it a DVD series? I had heard her name before but did not know what kind of workouts she did. Are any on YouTube?

Lori, good that you took another rest day. I worry about ticks too, since Keegan was already diagnosed once with Lime disease. We have never actually found one on a dog yet. We use Advantix. I agree, I would like toned arms, not any larger.

Hi to Valerie & Judy!

Take care,

We did a hike yesterday about 4 hours RT. It was steep and felt awfully hard. More a wild flower hike than anything else and great for that. Would have been too long and too early in the season to do the whole thing but our intent was short and a “break in” conditioner with flowers. Think we will ride today. Our family arrives tomorrow so will be walking with them in the park. They will not stay here long but will drive on thru the parks and stay in Jackson and stay with us on their way back too.
Ticks are expanding their range and easily get transported around on animals. They are nothing to mess with. We check our clothes skin and packs after every outing. Ticks take a while to attach themselves so there is time to pull them off. A tweezers is best.

This morning I did JS 20 Minute Arms from her 10 Pounds down dvd. It was 22 minutes and 142 calories burned. Average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate was 157. This is a light weights, high reps workout with a cardio intervals inserted. I used 5# dumbbells for this workout. After that I did one of the Ellen Barrett workouts, Peace Love & Cardio. The name is strange, but the “peace and love” refer to breathing. The workout is a standing pilates, ballet, and walking fusion. It was 30 minutes and 159 calories burned. My average heart rate was 117 and maximum heart rate was 145. I really liked this workout and will continue to use it for lighter days.

Deb, Petra Kolber’s workouts are not really on YouTube. You get the video clips from Total Fitness. You might find her podcasts and portions of speeches on YouTube. I think she moved on in her career before YouTube became such a big thing for fitness.

Diane Sue, great job with Cardio Supersets. It is very frustrating when the pain moves from one part of the body to another. I had that happen when my glutes and hamstrings were bothering me.

Lori, I’m glad that you are taking some rest days. I hope the Ellen Barrett workouts will help with that for me. There are days when I want to do something but not too much, like an active rest day or week. I bought her 7 Day Challenge dvd which has different workouts, some only 15 minutes. She just launched a new streaming site with a free week. All of her dvd workouts are available there if you wanted to try one.

Judy, thanks for mentioning the JS 20 Minute Arms a few months ago. I tried it today for the first time and I really like it.

Valerie, it’s wonderful that you got in the challenging hike yesterday. I hope you enjoy the time with your family.

No workout today. I got up and dressed to work out and my husband left for work only to come back a few minutes later. Something went wrong with his Range Rover so he took my car and left it here. I had to shower and call the shop. They had me check the oil before I bought it back since there was something leaking. I drove it in and they gave me a ride home. Hoping it is just the valve cover gasket that they just replaced. He says it is hard to get in there and sealed right because there is not much room in these vehicles. My husband said there was a clink and it started driving funny, not reacting well? I don't know. I drove it slowly in to the shop which is not far away. Repairs are expensive on foreign vehicles. I will keep that in mind next purchase :( My granddaughter who just graduated had to spend over 3000 dollars to fix her air and headlight that kept falling out on her VW this past week. We had the struts and air suspension system in the front fixed along with the gasket and oil change etc, and we have problems !! We should have purchased a new car over all of this. I am pretty stressed about the whole thing.
I really need to go see if I can fit in some yoga and stretching though. My knee feels pretty good today, but now it is the hip and neck :( I did foam roll a bit before I went to bed last night. This is getting to be annoying and I would like to get some dr appointments made, but being unsure of transportation I can't do it right now.
On a plus I cleaned and brushed Gertie outside then gave her a bath and did some extra things around here today after I got rid of the headache that was building. I have my grandson tomorrow and didn't want to have a lot of extra chores needing done.

Deb, I had read something about lower heart rates and calorie burns just means the heart is more efficient and the individual is in better shape physically. It is nice seeing those big awesome numbers though. I just had to set my calorie goals lower and watch my snacking more. Although I do find I don't eat as much anyway when I am not working out as hard. Ticks worry me after losing Mudd to tick born illness.

Valerie, a wild flower walk sounds nice. It is so pretty here in the mornings, but it sure heats up later in the day. That is nice that your family will be stopping by for a short visit :)

Carolyn, I checked out Petra Kolber on Total Fitness and I do remember her. I just never purchased any of her stuff. I probably just never purchased because after buying so many workouts that I wished that I did not purchase, I got very wary of buying what everyone seemed to jump on a band wagon for , only to quit talking about them or seeming to do them workouts again. It seems Chalean Johnson kind of moved on to something other than making dvds. More business ventures I guess. I finally had stopped her e mails because I got tired of all the motivational business venture stuff. I liked her workouts though. I guess Piyo was the last of her workouts. I think after her ski accident things seemed to tame down on the workout front.

Went on a ride this morning, a new one. It is on a very old road running along the edge of Yellowstone. It is named after one of the original people who helped get wolves back into the park. a terrific dedicated lady. It was hard to figure out where to start the ride . we started from the trailhead parking lot but figured out on the way back it would be much easier to ride up another short road and connect to the trail further up. we would have avoided 2 steep hills and fording a creek. so we came back that way. since it is on the park border, it is a sad place because they let people buy permits to kill buffalo there, ones that wander a few yards out of the park. so there are body parts everywhere, a killing field. old hides and bones everywhere. Its a complicated and unfair but the cattle industry always wins.
the road itself was very rough but ride-able, uphill all the way and in the sun. we will know to start earlier next time, or earlier in the year. strong thunderstorms predicted. when we saw clouds building we headed down as we were very out in the open. it rained a little, but not bad. After we got down we were driving back to the main hwy and spotted some elk. one was nursing a very tiny calf, looked no more than maybe a day old. I wanted a pic but when we slowed down she started moving off so we kept going. she was barely off the road so we were too close but that is where the road is.

Flea, tick, heartworm... I would not leave a pet unprotected. my brother will likely lose his dog young. he got a heartworm infection. cost a lot to treat, but irreversible damage was done. Advantage, Frontline, lots of brands, whatever works in your area. Prevention is so much better than trying to play catch up after . he could have paid for a lifetime worth of spot treatment for a fraction of the cost of treating the dog after he was sick. Ticks are so hard to spot on a dog. you would never be able to check all over every time the dog goes out and back in. it doesn't take ticks long to transmit disease. I think mosquitos transmit heartworm. good luck with that!

I never trust calorie burn numbers. pay almost no attention to them. I record exercise time and what I did. I don't pay much attention to heart rate either. occasionally strap on the polar but haven't used it in a while. guess I am not that number oriented.

So pleased to see Roseanne get a smack down. bad enough she thinks that way... but so incredibly stupid as to broadcast it online. wow. just wow.

I just finished 71 minutes doing Sarah Beth Yoga 10 minute warm up, 20 minute deeps hip opening, neck and shoulder tension, and followed up with Yoga Tune Up prehab and knee hab #2. 174 calories.

Good evening ladies,

I slept great last night. Complete 8 hours without waking! Once my head hit the pillow I did not wake until my alarm went off. Can’t remember not waking up at least once. Wish I had these nights more often! I did a LEKfit interval Bounce that really concentrated on upper. I could have done more but needed to keep somewhat short since I was dropping GiGi off at daycare. Total time was 48 m / 326 cal

Deb...we switched to Advantix and it has been great so far. She loves to roll in the grass and so far so good. We use Interceptor Plus for Heart worm. All this stuff is so expensive! But necessary. Good workout yesterday!

Diane Sue...GiGi does not seem to be bothered by the meds. I have heard of some that can not tolerate it. Great yoga workout. Wow that was a long one. The most I have done with Yoga is the P90x and I think I always ended at 45 mins. That was it for me. Oh no! More car trouble. You guys have had enough already. Hoping it is an easy fix.

Valerie...I do not feel the calorie count is accurate and I use for a guide. But it does motivate me! Your ride today sounds like a great one...minus the killing field of course. Must have been wonderful to see the mom and baby. So very cute. I never watched Rosanne’s show and stopped caring about her when she sang the national anthem and then spit on the ground. She lost any respect I had way back then.

Carolyn...that Jessica’s arm workout is a favorite of mine. Short but effective! I was checking Ellen out on Youtube after you mentioned her. I like her.

Hi to Judy!

I had to run out to pick up my husbands vehicle. Thankfully it was a hose that had come loose that was leaking and probably the clink sound my husband heard before it started bogging down. They said it would have caused it to bog down. So, sure hope this is it. They did not charge anything as they just serviced it.

Valerie, that would have been a great picture of the mother elk and the baby. It seems they would make the hunters clean up there mess. I guess I don't know much about that sort of thing. My husband has never been into hunting. He has had those that asked him to go. He said as long as there is a grocery store up the street he sees no reason to go hunting. I hate mosquitos. My husband reacts to them so badly that he refuses to go outside during family events, like watching fireworks displays in the evening. Our family cabin trips, he always stayed in in the evenings while we all sat around a camp fire. I hardly ever get mosquito bites.

Lori, it would be awesome to be able to sleep like that all of the time. Think how rested a person would feel. I have to go back to the vet and pick up the heartgaurd. My dentist now has lots of cool systems where you can check online and see your pets visits and med history. It was funny because I had just given her the last Heartgaurd and they emailed me to let me know she was due for more Heartgaurd. :) They are having an open house for their new clinic and boarding etc. this coming weekend. They put up a lot of informative stuff on their facebook page and post pictures of peoples pets. The yoga and therapy ball/ roller stuff really did help this afternoon. That prehab postion of the yoga tune up for knees was something I used a lot when I was rehabbing my knee after surgery. I used it as my warm up before doing some spin bike at first. Then graduated to the other more strength based moves on the dvd. The final section does some stuff much like you would do with a gliding disc , but she used a towel. I do not generally spend that much time on yoga and I used to do about 45 minutes on P90X yoga as well. I skipped after the first 15 minutes of those vinyasa and push up sequences that got really boring and had a particular spot around the balance and floor section that I would go to. Sometimes I skipped the standing balance stuff as well. I don't remember all of my stopping points now, but I probably have them somewhere in my notes :)

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I went for a 30 minute walk and did a Barlates workout. This morning I did the Yin Yoga practice from Ultimate Yogi. I felt so much better afterwards. I may do this again tomorrow as I can tell I haven't been stretching or doing as much yoga as I should. My hips and hamstrings are extremely tight.

Diane Sue-I picked up the Hydraplenish and started taking it a couple of days ago. I also ordered the Rainbow Light magnesium supplement you posted about. Nice job with the yoga today! That sounds like a good combination.

Lori-That is awesome that you got 8 hours of sleep! I remember about Roseanne singing the national anthem and how disgusting her behavior was. Hadn't thought about that in ages. I had to look up the year, it was 1990, wow!

Valerie-I agree about Roseanne. I never liked her to begin with. Sounds like you had a nice ride, except for the killing field. That is sad.

Carolyn-Great job with the JS arm workout. That is a good one. The Ellen Barrett workout sounds good too.

Hi to Deb!

Have a good night!

Judy

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live "Move It"....37 minutes 227 calories. I had to use the calorie burn from the last time I did this one. My Polar kept showing 0 for my heart rate, then would show the real etc. Also got the "check transmitter" error a few times during the workout. It may be the battery, or the strap was moving around too much. Maybe this is what has been going on where I am getting the low calorie burns.

Valerie, that's great that your family will stop there to visit. They must be on a long driving trip. That ride sounds wonderful, especially seeing the Mama and baby.

Carolyn, nice workouts!

Diane Sue, too bad about the car. That has to be frustrating, having to take it back in when it was just there. Great that you got that yoga in.

Lori, oh I am so envious! 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep sounds like heaven! How is Gigi liking day care? I am looking forward to viewing the clip of Cathe's Live workout today, she is celebrating their 200th Live workout....it sounds great.

Judy, great that the yoga helps. I need to do more for my one hip.

Take care,

Deb it is DH's cousin and his wife who live near us in WA. they are flying. They are staying with us at the start and the finish of their trip here. they don't usually do outdoor things so we will see how they do. I think they will end up in Jackson shopping and eating at nice restaurants but we will see. we will try to show them some easy things here, and then let them go on the "tourist tour" of things we don't look at anymore. We like the hiking and the wildlife but many people want to go see Old Faithful etc. nothing wrong with it, but I don't do crowded busy tourist things. It is the season for baby animals so we will see how it works for them. I hope they get lucky like we did with the elk and calf yesterday.

Lori how wonderful 8 straight hours!. who would ever think we would all get so excited about a regular nights sleep! I'm pretty liberal with excusing comediennes for raunchy off-color humor. that is, after all, what many do for a living. they are creating a "character" much like acting IMO. No attention, no success. they are not delivering the Gettysburg address. sometimes a line gets crossed though. I had forgotten about the anthem controversy. I saw roseannes stand up act a long time ago and she was very funny. raunchy but funny. I feel bad for all the other people she took out with her by going from huge success to cancelled in a couple hours. so funny trying to blame Ambien.

We knew about the bison kill zone before, and don't agree with the politics or lack of science behind it. better than being totally surprisedby the boy count on an otherwise benign ride.

I am a mosquito and fly magnet. even with insect spray, I get chewed to pieces. DH seems to have more of a tick problem. I usually wear more loose nylon clothing. a lot of women wear tights or leggings to hike in these days, but I get bitten right thru the fabric. It's one reason for me being a little e of an off season hiker. when bugs are intense, I just stay home. nothing helps much.

there is a short discussion over in the Ask Cathe section under beginner and intermediate workouts about the future of DVD's and whether how many more workouts will be produced that way. I totally understand how it's a business decision and if you don't sell enough of them, its not going to happen. seriously are that many people able to stream? I am starting to feel ancient. DVDs work so well, we have the issue of no streaming
service to workout room in either house. generally most must have easier streaming service than we do. it is a massive PITA. we still rent DVDs via Netflix because the choices are so much better. If you want to watch trashy movies no one ever watched, streaming seems to be right there. there is the occasional decent movie in the mix but most of the choices are total garbage, kind of like the cable packages that preceded them.

I have my grandson here today and have to get out to see if I can get my husband's laptop fixed. We just get his vehicle fixed and come home and the laptop is messed up. I got on line with Avast and they said they cannot find any threats. We have floating ghost bubbles, shaking screen, unresponsive mouse pad, and now he can't log in. :( I am getting really tired of all of the fixing. I still need to go to Srpouts as well.
Workout today was Fit Tower Advanced Bootcamp, 51 minutes, 293 calories, 1,751 steps. I used the bands that came with the fit tower and workouts. Those are easy bands to me. I just did not want to push the legs too hard yet. This did not feel like too much though.

Judy, yin yoga practices always feel good. Sarah Beth Yoga has a lot of them. I keep thinking I want to get a bolster for some of the relaxeing stuff she does instead of trying to use pillows. I am going to try not taking the glucosamine chondroitin, collagen capsules I bought. I think they make me sick. It feels like when I have used other capsules from the store and I believe it was the msm and wherever they source it from. Not all products with it in them bother me. I had been in avoidance for a long time. I am allergic to sulfa and some of those products give me a reaction. So this morning I just took the hyaluronic acid capsule and used my Dr Axe Multi Collagen with 1 calcium. Anyway I was taking three of those capsules spread out with meals and every time I took one yesterday I felt dizzy and ill.

Deb, that was one of the things I hated about Polar was mine seemed to go to 0 in the middle of a workout and I would end up stopping to try to get it to function and I would keep checking it. It was way to frustrating. I would rather have the watch give me a too high heart rate than none. At least it knows I am doing something.

Valerie, I fear having to rely on streaming. If you have downloads you should be able to play them, but they require space to store them and some knowledge of technical stuff. I like the dvds myself. I stopped my yoga yesterday at the start of a Sarah Beth yoga because the streaming just suddenly stopped. I didn't feel like messing with it.

Deb-Great job with the Live workout! I remember when I used a Polar monitor, it would also go to 0 at times and it was very frustrating trying to get a correct reading.

Valerie-I was reading on another forum and the discussion was how many people still use DVDs. Talk about making me feel ancient, most of the posters on that forum wanted nothing to do with DVDs or CDs, they were streaming everything, videos and music. Then I look at the dates on the posts and they were from 2014, 4 years ago. It was depressing. I've always thought of myself as an early adapter to new technology, but I still love my DVDs and I don't want to switch to all streaming yet. I'm not quite ready for that.

Diane Sue-I do like downloads too. That is too bad about the capsules making you sick.

Diane sue & Judy I feel the same. I can buy a DVD and take it between houses. I can use it on any floor in our house. I could use it traveling in our camper if I wanted to. streaming does not work except our main TV in the living room, and I don't exercise there. The internet signal does not get to our exercise room and never will. streaming gets interrupted, paused a lot. we have streamed Netflix and amazon prime and hulu . the movie choices are overall awful. there is an occasional decent one but generally they're B grade movies I'd not waste time on.

TV series are generally better than movies but delayed. If I have to wait years for a series to be released, I won't remember to watch it. we just started Big Little Lies, got a load of awards late last year. Forget streaming..... only on a mailer DVD. and by the time you sign up for a bunch of add- on streaming sites, you are paying as much as you were previously with the cable you complained about. Local news is challenging with an antenna. I don't think I'm an early adopter. I want good quality, minimal frustration. I still buy an occasional movie or series but not before watching it first. many movies are Ok once, and that's plenty.
