Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/24

Good afternoon,

A rest day today. Right now we are waiting for the plumber to get here.....found a leak in the basement, plus our front hose spigot is getting little to no water coming out...ugh....it's always something! It's also very hot again today. We broke a record yesterday, 93 degrees, which was not reached since 1944.

Diane Sue, nice job on KCM....glad your neck is feeling better. Why do you need a plug bar for your chair? Yes, we are really slow to open here, because of all the cases in NYC. With all the commuting between NY, NJ and Connecticut, the governors are working together on the opening of their states.

Valerie, amazing that you are skiing in May, almost June. I don't like those windmills either. My body won't do those moves, so I just sub something else. Yes, I didn't think the boxing in Cardio Party was that energetic,...but it was the only thing that seemed to affect the area that had the pain. Yes, you need to look at the Perfect 30 again! ( enabler that I am :))

Carolyn, I am sure you did a great job re-learning Party Rock'n Step workout!

Waving to Judy & Lori

Take care,

Carolyn, the link to the EW recipe had another bread with almost the same " seed " name, but a yeast bread. I wasn't sure what the link would actually show before I pasted it in, didn't want Lori to get confused about which bread we were talking about. I'd like to try EW's yeasted seed bread sometime .
I thought low carb seed bread was 8 points. if I spend that many points, I take a Kind bar. they hold up to traveling in a back / bicycle pack better. next time I make that bread, I'll slice /freeze it so it isn't tempting me everyday.
also I went back and looked at Perfect 30 again and decided to preorder it. I like newer workouts better than older ones and these sound speedy. I like giant sets and supersets which tend to be faster paced, and would like a new upper body workout and also abs. I've done the ones I have a lot, makes sense to bring in a a new one. makes sense to get the series and quit procrastinating. Done. thanks for encouraging me to decide.

we went mt biking this morning on a closed road we used to ski all the time. we can't drive partway up like we used to because its closed and gated. used to drive to the snowline, park, and ski from there. we have skied/snowshoed it occasionally but usually need to walk up to snow. today rode it up 5 miles. uphill every foot of the way. not steep but consistent. took us 2.5 hours to go up, went until we hit solid snow. we saw elk and lots of elk tracks on the way. took 35-40 min to come back down. a really hard... but fun morning. this is worth serious activity points.

Hi friends,

I just joined the forum and I would love to join your check-in group if you are taking new members? I'll be turning 50 in 3 weeks -- so I hope I qualify! I have done Cathe videos on and off since the Collage Video catalog days...lately I use the online streaming membership and do the workouts in my basement. My favorites at the moment are the Cathe Live videos. This week I've done Touch Up Legs and Touch Up Arms. Wishing everyone good health and spirits --

Christina

Hi Christina and Welcome!

I am 58 and have been working out to Cathe since 1994. However, not as much the past couple of years. I do more barre and rebounding. I did preorder her newest workouts and I am looking forward to them. Congrats on turning 50!

I loved the Collage catalog!!!! When the newest came in I would be so excited. I would study and circle all the videos I wanted to buy. I discovered Cathe’s workouts from Collage.

Today I did a SBF’s Stopwatch Plank. Thank goodness it was a short workout...only 16mins. You all know how I feel about core workout. lol! I followed up with a 45 min bounce/sculpt by Perspirology (this had core also!) They posted a free workout on Instragram that I grabbed. I am loving all these instagram workouts people have been posting. They have a streaming site that I may look into with a free trial.

Valerie...thanks for the seed bread recipe. It looks great. Hard to fathom snow!! It was 88 here today.

Diane Sue...my ingredients for the low carb bread did not come in til late today so going to try it tomorrow. Yes I used to love my job, but the past few years - new owners changed things. The heart and soul of the company seems to be missing.

Deb...we recently had to replace our front faucet. It just completely broke off. We are in Phase 1 of opening. Phase 2 starts I believe June 8. We are going slow too and I am glad.

Carolyn...I most likely will use my rebounder for the higher impact moves in her new videos. Makes it tolerable for me. She did 2 versions of Party Rocking Step is that correct? One was easier than the other? Not sure if I am rememberimg this correctly. I do know I tried the easier one and still tripped over my own feet. Never even opened the harder one!

Judy...any news on going back to work? You may have posted and I missed it.

Look at me 10:45pm and I am still wide awake. Who is this person I have become!!!!!

Have a great night all!!

Lori-I haven't posted it yet. I just found out today that I'm on the schedule starting June 20th. Unless things get worse here covid wise, I will be going back then.

Welcome Christina... we all do different things here. I'm 72 and trying not to act my age. I found Cathe on a Sports channel when they used to have exercise programs, mid 90's I think.
Lori we are pretty warm down at this elevation. mountains still have a load of snow. we rode to around 4000 feet elevation and it looked pretty solid after that. melting fast.

No workout today. I did yoga at 2 am for neck pain therapy and one for the low back pain off Amazon Prime video again. About 40 minutes. I started to do Step Sync this morning and did the warm up and got a text from my daughter that they were coming over earlier so she could visit for a bit before she went to do a walk through of her new house. I was tired anyway and these allergies have been keeping me up. So, I just let it go for the day. I will get back to it in the morning. I tried allegra, hoping it would work, but nope. None of them. It seems to work best with Zertec and once in awhile some Flonase, but I am still coughing and sneezing and this is not a good time for me to start up with a new doctor for allergies. I will wait.

Deb, it seems like there is always something to go wrong when you think you have everything working right. I ordered a new plug bar because my husband is getting his new chair next week and we will be sharing the plugs for our laptops and chairs. Both chairs have usb ports and move with electric buttons. His has pockets for his tablet and stuff. I also needed it to have a long cord to reach from the cabinet it has to be plugged into. Hard to explain, but our house has a wet bar next to where my husband's chair is, and we house a printer in it and stuff my husband uses for work and the like. We don't keep alcohol in it. The sink is never used. The plug is inside that cabinet and my husband drilled a whole through the counter and out the bottom of the lower cabinet so that the cord could come through that way. This house has no real wall space to put furniture. Two large windows and the one full wall has the big tv on it. The other is a fireplace and wet bar and the rest is open. So you can't just plug things into the wall like a lamp or anything. We will put the plug bar itself under one of the chairs. I hope that all makes sense.
That virus is a crazy thing. My granddaughter got tested and it came back negative, but her friend's boyfriend tested positive after he was around someone else who tested negative that was around someone positive. Makes me wonder about those tests and accuracy. Which I guess they are not 100% accurate. Her friend is being tested again, since she is so sure she should test positive since her boyfriend did. Not one of them is sick. So, my granddaughter wanted hibachi for her birthday dinner yesterday, so my daughter went out and did pick up and they ate it at home. She said now they all have to stay away from people and be careful. She is the dermatologist and her daughter is working in their office this summer. They have to wear masks. Not sure how this will affect my granddaughter's working. She is getting another test done in a couple of days.

Valerie, I would have figured that you wouldn't want the Step Boss series unless you wanted the weight workout. It is all revolved around a step. It does seem like the Perfect 30 would be a good one for you to use along with your outdoor rides and activities. I am hopeful that I will like the yoga on this series.

Christina, welcome. I will be 68 this summer. I think that I got my first Cathe videos from Collage many years ago. Nice work doing the Live workouts. It has been awhile since I have signed up for the live workouts.

Lori, hope the next bread turns out well. I am so sorry things at work had to change for you so much. Funny how different we all are. My favorite of the two Party Rockin Step workouts was the one with more complex choreography. I love them both though. And I love ab workouts ;) Once I started doing step I always loved it. Sometimes my knees don't love me back as much though if I do it too much. I rarely throw two risers under the platform anymore. Remembering some older Cathe workouts and jumping onto the step with 3 and 4 risers.

good morning. Im pretty pleased I was able to crank up the endless hill yesterday. I was actually happy when we hit the snowline so I didn't have to go further! the road goes another 2-3 miles as I remember but we've been unable to get to the end for years. the FS moved the start point further away so its more miles than it used to be. the ride back down was (constant braking) free ride for 5 miles. hands cramp up so stop frequently to give them a break. lots of small stream crossings with rocks and mud but just FUN, mostly in shade. it was so cool to see elk have repopulated the area and use the road. the end of the road has a dramatic massive up close view of Mt Baker... with nothing in between you and the mountain. DH and I have backpacked up there in winter but that was on skis and the road was shorter then. road is not well known because its been closed for about 15 years and is off most current maps. we think the FS may have some sort of plan for the road but we will use it as long as we can.

I expect there will be parts of the Perfect 30 workouts I wont like but a new efficient upper body workout sounds good, and love ab workouts. I like cathes other yoga workouts. so by the time I buy even 2 dvds at regular price I can get the whole set for less. Ive looked at other instructors for yoga and tried a few but they were either WAY annoying or too difficult.

Every one is going in different directions on virus testing and there doesn't seem to be a standard test yet. a lot of variability in results.

Lori if you make the seed bread, keep in mind its pretty caloric. its not too sweet but with all the seeds and almond flour, it's filling and delicious. except my husband thinks its awful! so a range of opinions.

ETA I had my f/up ultrasound and mammogram, multiple views, this morning, and it is all okay. such a relief!! I stress every day until I get the all clear.

This morning I did ICE Chiseled Upper Body for 42 minutes and 166 calories burned. My average heart rate was 108 and maximum heart rate was 246. My calorie burn today was lower than the last time that I did this workout. The variability is always of interest to me.

Diane Sue, I’m sorry that you are having such a hard time with allergies. I don’t blame you for not wanting to find a new allergy doctor right now. The Covid 19 testing is very unpredictable and there are so many of them. I feel like there is a lot of confusion with what the results actually mean.

Christina, I am 69 and, like Valerie, trying not to act my age. I love working out and I try to do a variety of things including flexibility. I started with Cathe workouts in 2009 after years of working out in a gym. I had a few exercise tapes, but once I found Cathe I never looked back. I subscribed to Live for a while, but it’s been a couple of years.

Judy, it’s good to have a target date for going back to work.

Valerie, great ride this morning. I thought the same thing about the preorder—it’s worth the price even if I don’t use all of them. I like having the options.

Lori, I have a recipe for a gluten free all purpose flour, but it requires mixing several flours. I need to order amaranth and sorghum flour before I use it again. I have the other flours in the freezer. The recipe is from Jennifer’s Way cookbook by Jennifer Esposito. She had a bakery in New York by the same name, but it closed a couple of years ago. I looked for the flour recipe online, but it appears to be only available in the cookbook.

Hello to Deb.

oday I did Step Boss Step Sync, 56 minutes, heart rate 118/150, 281 calories, 5,865 steps. My heart rate was staying really low and dropping out for awhile until I shifted my Fitbit over a vein and tightened a bit. It is hard to keep it in position because it has to be toward one side a bit. Odd, because it then jumped from 105 to 132. I don't think it picks up very well. I then did Raw Abs finisher, 20 minutes, used 8 and 10# dumbbell dependant on move, 321 steps, heart rate 93/124. I finished wit Amazon Yoga pain therapy with Lindsey Samper #1 neck pain, 20 minutes, 16 calories, 16 steps. Total time was 96 minutes, 337 calories, 6,202 steps.
I also did 12 minutes of a 15 minute strength and flexibility yoga on the same pain therapy series. I didn't do all of it because it was 27 minutes long. Will save it for another day, but I liked what I did. It was more a regular flow, but I like how she had it put together and she has you doing more stretching with your arms in back and down while in the lunge position and even the chair. I did not have my Fit bit on when I did this one. I am so tired. Started to nod off during the last part of the neck stretch when I was just lying on my belly with my head turned to the side. The neck therapy one I did today is all lying on the floor and interesting moves which are pretty gentle, but really helpful.

Valerie, that sounds like you had a great time with your ride and accomplishment. Glad the mammogram and ultrasound went well this time.
My daughter says they are taking precautions and staying away till the are sure they are clear. My granddaughter and her friend really want the guy to go get tested again since those tests are not always accurate. Her friend went and got a second test and is still negative. The guy does not want to go through the test again. Crazy since his girlfriend did it twice. Not only that, even my granddaughter is now being called daily and harassed for a name list of every single person she has been around even though she tested negative. I guess that is so they can harass everyone else? It seems a bit overboard to me. She tested negative and was not around the person that tested positive. She was around his girlfriend. I can understand contacts if she had the virus, but so far she does not.

Carolyn, did you do an update on your Fitbit. I know I just had one on my Versa 2. It seems lower than my last recordings for the same workouts. And I am pretty sure, even the yoga is way low at 16 calories. I probably burn that while I am sitting in my chair. Nice job on the upper body. I keep thinking maybe I will fit a little upper body in if my neck doesn't hurt. Crazy neck just really makes it hard to choose workouts.

I took yesterday off. got a decent nights sleep and feel normal this morning. I get so stressed with f/up testing, and this was a lot of them.

I am fine with gluten. I used to bake a lot, but not so much anymore because I want to eat what I make. the best sources for unusual flour mixes were Bob's red mill and King Arthur. groceries here all have a Bobs section usually in the baking aisle. as I recall, shipping was expensive from Bob's so better to buy locally. . I used to shop at the mill itself, its in a suburb of southeast Portland, OR. I use King Arthur for specialty ingredients for baking like cocoa and chocolate. they have lots of flours too. I bought almond flour at Costco where it cost much less. the only thing I used it for was the low carb sweet bread.

we are planning to go to MT shortly, so I plan to make the low carb seed bread.

off to mt bike our close in ride before it heats up. might get to 80 today.

Today I did JS Stride and Step. That was 30 minutes and 217 calories burned. My average heart rate was 129 and maximum heart rate was 151. The May rotation had Tabatacise scheduled, but I was not in the mood for that type of cardio.

Diane Sue, great job with Step Sync. That’s a fun workout. I have not updated my Fitbit, at least not manually. I didn’t notice if it updated automatically. I’m not having any problems with it, but I think the Versa is more finicky than my Charge 2.

Valerie, I rely on Bob’s Red Mill products quite a bit. I am able to find most things locally, but not amaranth flour. I don’t avoid gluten, but I like to try different options. I bake gluten free things occasionally just to see how they will turn out. Enjoy your ride today.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Back from our ride, twice as long as intended. we'd finished up the long final downhill when DH realized he'd dropped his sunglasses..... somewhere. they are nice glasses. we each have 2 pair. they have interchangeable lenses. you can swap lenses, not carry 2 pairs. I keep mine on leash. he stuck his in a pocket. he wanted to go back and look for them. he is typical guy. cant see it right in front of his nose. so I went back up behind him. this is a couple miles, we'd already gone up once. he went faster, but... the point was to find the glasses. I went slower. I am good at finding things. I found them after he'd already gone past.... on side of trail in some ferns. we know the trails well, so I turned around knowing where I'd likely find him. yes, right on that too. I am so proud of my self right now! he was surprised he'd gone past them. I have my brief moment of glory! it was 2 hrs 5 minutes with twice the elevation gain and loss as usual.

carolyn bobs makes amaranth flour. Ive seen it here. maybe your store could order some for you? most stores don't carry everything bobs makes. https://www.bobsredmill.com/organic-amaranth-flour.html

Good morning,

I have been really bad with workouts this week. Nothing since Tuesday. Hopefully starting back tomorrow. I like the look of the LIVE workout Cathe did this past Thursday...PHA with a barbell.

Valerie, glad you ordered the Perfect 30 series. It looks and sounds like a good one. Glad to hear your follow up mammo was good! You are definitely The Finder of Lost Items!

Christine, Welcome! I just turned 67...I also enjoy the LIVE workouts and do them in my basement. :). FYI, we start a new thread each week on Sunday...so tomorrow you will see the new post for "W/B 5/31".

Lori, a blast from the past....I used to love the Collage Video book that came in the mail too! Studying it and picking out what I would like to buy. That is too bad about your job. I remember how much you used to enjoy it. New owners can really destroy the morale of a company. Same happened to us when our family owned business was bought by a company that had nothing to do with what we did, and no knowledge of how to run it. Thankfully, it was re-purchased by FedEx who had an "inkling" about the transportation business. LOL...

Judy, what phase is your area in currently? Our county is still in Phase 1. Although Home Depots etc have been open all along, when John and I went to get some top soil, the parking lot was full, tons of people etc, we turned around and left. I hope your store has some good "distancing" and mask policies in place. It was the garden center we saw.

Diane Sue, sounds like you have the chair/plug situation worked out! That is scary about your daughter and friends with the testing. I am sure there are people that were positive and no one even knew it. Who knows how many people they may have infected. Yes, we have read also that some tests were giving false negatives. Agree on the FitBit picking up HR well. It moves too much, sometimes it is at 120, like you mentioned, then zooms up to 130+. I can't seem to get it to stay in one place. I also have a hard time getting it to synch each morning.

Carolyn, nice job on Chiseled Upper Body! Do you use a FitBit for your calorie count? I think mine varies depending on how it moves around on my wrist during a workout. It is not tight enough.

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Thursday I did ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast with Icy Core 2 and an hour of Yin Yoga. Yesterday I did Rock'm Sock'm Kickbox with the Blizzard Blast, Muscle Meltdown Triceps and Icy Core 1.

Deb-I'm planning on doing the Live Barbell PHA workout tomorrow. It looks like a really good one. We are in phase 3, the "flattening" phase. The stay at home order is extended to June 12th. I've been reading on the Home Depot forums that the stores have been packed lately. It is a concern and Chris and I have been talking about whether or not I should extend my leave of absence. I'm just not sure it will be safe enough by June 20th. At least I have a couple of weeks to monitor the situation before I make a decision.

Valerie-that is great news about your follow up tests! I ordered the Perfect 30 series too. I'm looking forward to it.

Carolyn-Great workouts this week! I'm planning on doing Chiseled Upper Body next week. I agree about how confusing the Covid 19 testing is. Chris and I would like to get antibody tests but I'm not sure they are accurate or meaningful.

Diane Sue-My allergies have been horrible this week too. I've been taking Allegra and using Flonase.
That is really scary about your daughter and the Covid testing. Who is calling your granddaughter and asking about contacts? Is it the health department? It seems odd that they call her every day. I wouldn't like that.

Hi to Lori & Christine!

Judy

forgive me for going on about the sunglasses.... it was hilarious to watch DH's stunned look when I pulled out the glasses. I'm sure he thought they were gone for good, especially since he'd just gone over the same terrain. it was several miles of trail so it was not a slam-dunk to find them. I was surprised myself. I've told him to use leashes, a dozen ways to keep glasses "connected" to you. we don't want an eye injury from hitting an unseen branch but sometimes they fog or are too dark, or you can see better without and he doesn't like the leashes. I sure don't want to do this exercise again.

this virus is going to be around for a long time. we are going to learn to live with it. many precautions we are taking now will be more or less permanent....IMO. its too bad there is zero leadership nationally for testing, and there are dozens of different directions this is going.
we are moving into phase 2 here. the main thing I want is a haircut. going to MT tomorrow. we intended to be back there long before this time, have maintenance to do. so funny... masks are becoming a fashion accessory...

I was so tremendously relieved after the mamm testing. this was a lot... ultrasound and a bunch of vierws with a special plate. all came back normal. so I am probably Ok for next years testing, but the year after will be tough. my mother had breast cancer at 74 so they are really being cautious not to miss anything.

I used to get the collage catalogue too. I loved to look thru, compare workouts. I think I ordered the kathy smith video from them, but it went from "play" to the trash in record time. no way. I trust Cathes workouts to have things I can do, along with things I choose not to do.

Today I did Push Pull, a blast from the past, from the May rotation. My time was 48 minutes and 221 calories burned. Average heart rate was 114 and maximum heart rate was 151. This was a nice little total body workout, but not one that I ever think of on my own.

Valerie, the fact that this virus is going to be around for a while is something that was discussed by an infectious disease specialist in an article that I read a few days ago. He said that we should think of things like measles, chicken pox, or HIV. Even when there is a vaccine the virus will still be around and we need to be working on ways to live with it. I had not thought of it in that light.

Deb, yes I use the Fitbit for all of my tracking. I know that it isn’t perfect, but no device is. It works well for my needs.

Hello to Judy, Lori, and Diane Sue. Have a wonderful day everyone.

This morning I did Raw Box and Tone, 29 minutes, heart rate 129/158, 152 calories, 2,493. Yoga Therapy Lindsey Samper, workout 8 for neck and some lower stretching added, 20 minutes, 18 calories, heart rate 70/90, 15 steps. Total time was 47 minutes, 160 calories, 2508 steps.
I guess I forgot to post yesterday. I did Strong and Sweaty Bootcamp 47 minutes, heart rate 113/142, 171 calories, 1,896 steps. I followed it with Cardio Slam timesaver floor cardio only, 21 minutes, 91 calories, heart rate 114/146, 1,612 steps. Finished with Lindsey Samper yoga 28 minutes, 32 calories, heart rate 82/102,90 steps. Total time was 96 minutes, 3,598 steps, 294 calories.

Valerie, glad that you got some sleep and feel better. I try to get the Montana brand non gmo flour, but otherwise it is usually king Arthur or Bob's Red Mill. I Sprouts usually is pretty good about different flours, and specialty stuff. Years ago when my children were young I had to go to a small health food store that kept a lot of it refrigerated. I think this virus scare will have some positive in it in that people are more aware of handwashing and precautions against disease. I am sure pretty much everyone will have hand sanitizers and safety things set that will stay. I notice the restaurants do not have condiments or salt and pepper shakers on their tables. If you want something you would have to ask. Not all of the workers had on masks today in Braums when we stopped for a late lunch/dinner today. We went to the carwash with my car today because it really needed cleaned inside and out and my husband may be using it next week because he is taking his in for a couple of things on warranty work. For whatever reason that new Taurus has dripped oil on the floor of the garage a tiny bit since we got it. Also there is a problem with a tire and he wanted to get the oil changed and the usual maintenance. Anyway they had removed half the chairs for people waiting and had plexiglass at the counter and X marks for distancing. There was only 6 of us inside waiting though.

Carolyn, Tabatasize does take some motivation and energy. I think what you chose was a good one. I used to do push pull and the supersets dvd over and over again for years after I got them. That article makes sense. My daughter has pretty much come to that conclusion. I have not heard anyone mention your type of Fitbit and problems. Mine worked great for the first few weeks and once they started doing updates it has gone down hill. I am not the only one either. I know others that have problems with the Versa 2.

Judy, I think it is the health department calling. It seems they would be interested in the person that tested positive and not the ones that are testing negative. Besides she was not around the person that tested positive, but around the girlfriend that tested negative. I have really dreaded going out anywhere with my allergies so bad. I think the Zertec Gel tabs do not dissolve well. Today I put one in vinegar to see how long it would take for it to start dissolving and in an hour it was still mostly in tact. I was able to squeeze it then. Tonight I put one in a vinegar for about 20 minutes till it just started to soften then added water to the vinegar and swallowed it. I ordered some that are not gel tabs from Amazon that should be here tomorrow. My daughter said she didn't know they made them in gel caps. They are so hard they have no give whatsoever.

Deb, I keep having to take days off or try to find a short workout myself. Trying to make sure I do those yoga workouts for neck pain and keep up with that daily. I have to restart my Fitbit in the mornings to get it to sync and sometimes when I want to sync it after a workout I have to restart it because it tells me it cannot find my device. I noticed a lot of my neighbors doing planting and stuff in their yards. We have more than one with tomato plants in pots and tomatoes growing on them along their driveways. It seems a bit odd to grow them in front of the house. I imagine they all have been frequenting Home Depot since it is closest or maybe Ace Hardware. When Home Depot came in the store most of us used went out of business. It was Payless Cashaways and had decent lumber and all of the necessities, but not a big company store. I guess they could no longer compete. I keep ordering things like yard spray and garden hoses and the like from Amazon. No plants though.
