Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/20

I’m glad that the forum is up again. I had forgotten that it would be down for maintenance. This morning I did Kick Max, the low impact timesaver premix. That was 48 minutes and 224 calories burned. My average heart rate was 115 and maximum heart rate was 150.

Deb, Ellen Barrett’s workouts are a blend of yoga, pilates, barre, and athletic movements. The previews that I looked at seem similar to Linda Wooldridge, JS, or SB, but not exactly like any of them. Total Fitness is having a sale and I ordered a couple of her DVDs.

I hope everyone had a nice day today.

we did a hike today, 5 hours at around 7500-8000 feet. it was hard but not ridiculous. we have been at elevation for several days now. the flowers are amazing. not that many animals. we saw a grizzly bear yesterday, when driving. very up close and personal. a young bear. we were going thru a construction zone and were 1st car behind the pilot car when the bear decided to stroll across and along the road. so we got a very close view. he didn't seem bothered at all. saw a black bear on the hike today. he was a ways off but the terrain was very open and we got a good look. saw elk and bison and a quick shot at some bighorns on a cliff. prairie dogs. sandhill cranes. osprey.

IMO prescription meds like Ambien work if you need for a special situation, like a stressful event for a limited time. it does not work well to help you sleep better long term. if you use it for a few nights and then set it aside until another "situation", then fine. I used some ambien and some xanax recently for the travel and my mothers funeral. that was it. the bottles are back in the cabinet. they wont work if you use every night. I tried herbal things like melatonin and valerian and didn't notice anything. benadryl works OK for occasional use. Advil Pm or Tylenol PM might be helpful but I would not take it every night. Benadryl plus relief of aches and pains.
I work on getting room conditions better...... quieter, cooler, and most of the time DH and I sleep in separate rooms. not a hostility issue, but when you get older, sleep is not as easy and automatic. I always have to get up and pee at midnight and that was waking us both up. I try to go back to sleep but I can't always, and so if I'm in another room I can turn on a light and read or do a puzzle until I can sleep again. If I toss and turn, neither of us can sleep so this is the best choice. He also needs the head of the bed elevated for reflux and I can't sleep if the bed is not level. he likes the bed warmer. whatever!. a million things can mess up sleep!.

This morning I did Ice Rock'm Sock'm timesaver #5 less kicks, 40 minutes, heart rate 137 average, 167 max, 256 calories, met 5.8, 3,544 steps.
I then did Ice Muscle Meltdown Triceps, 16 minutes, heart rate average 99, max 129, met 4.5, 79 calories, 138 steps and finished off with Sarah Beth Yoga on youtube, feel good hip opening hatha yoga, 15 minutes, 37 calories. Total time was 71 minutes, 372 calories.
weights giant set done 3 times 12 reps each exercise
overhead triceps extensions 12# dbs
kickbacks 12# dbs
dips body weight
lying triceps extensions 15# dbs
close grip bench press 15# dbs
I didn't put yesterdays biceps weights down , but it was mostly 15's and 12# on the preacher curls.
I am feeling much better today. I did have leg cramps last night. This is the third time lately. I am hoping the Rainbow Magnesium + Calcium helps. It has 1000 mg in 3 capsules of magnesium (I take two) along with calcium, D, C and B6 and an herbal supposrt blend with tumeric and willow bark along with digestive support with things like ginger in them. I use these occasionally and they do help. Since I have been getting about 1/3 of my dv of calcium I thought 2 day would be enough as opposed to the 3 suggested.
I got my husbands car out of the shop so maybe I can get my physical and mammogram scheduled now that I have transportation.
I tried to get on here earlier this afternoon, and I guess they were updating the site.

Lori, it sounds like you really need the long weekend and some rest. I do not really care for Tracey Anderson. I think it was the Teen Meta that had a strength segment using a loop band that I kind of liked. Her rebounder "tramp" workout is so boring since she doesn't talk and you get to watch her do the whole workout facing you and you get to watch it from behind. It cost me 25.00 and it was definitely not worth it to me. They could be better if it didn't feel like you were mainly watching her to see her perform. That is just my opinion. Endless reps and boredom. I do have several of her workouts. I have had off and on sore areas or mildly painful areas. I know sometimes it is nerve endings from one area that transfer to others. Sometimes it is hard to tell exactly what area is causing the problems. I watched some of that bounce clip. I may try that soon.

Valerie, the water rower sounds interesting. I wonder what the differences in the water is. Maybe hard water or something? If it is just for resistance and is a jug it really doesn't make sense that well water could not be used. I think most medications if taken long term can end up causing some other problems. We know there are consequences to taking too much of things like acetomenophen and ibuprophen. The same is probably true of sleep aids and many other things. Even if they are over the counter. I tried sleep teas, some didn't help and some like the valerian, leaves me groggy the next day and I just didn't like the way it made me feel and sleep was not that much better. I find if I can make myself not eat late and not drink too much water before bed, I sleep better. I hate it when I wake up needing to go to the bathroom. If it is early, like around 1 am or something I usually can go back to sleep, but if it is near 4 I may not be able to go back to sleep. Getting up and reading never helps me relax enough to go back to sleep.

Deb, I would not be happy about not getting the mammogram because I was a couple of weeks early. I won't be early as it has been almost 2 years. I skipped a year since I had just had the breast mri. The breast care center sends me a card and calls when it is time for another one. They just moved to a brand new building right around the corner from me. Actually, I have had doctors recommend supplements at different times. My grandson was recommended taking melatonin when he was younger by a doctor. I know a lot of doctors just want to give a prescription. Judy is right though, most have to have a disclaimer to protect themselves. Fortunately mine knows I am not much for meds and she will give me some samples and discuss other alternatives and listen more than anything else. I do not take any prescriptions right now and am hoping not to have to.
I ran out of the Joint Vibrance powder I was taking and had 700 points with Dr Axe website, so had purchased the multi collagen along with the pre-workout bone broth protein that I usually use so I could get the Bone Broth Protein meal powder free. Sooo, in order to make it near the ingredients in the all around Joint Vibrance, I ordered Bio Schwartz Glucosamine, MSM, + Chondroitin with patented Fruitex-B (whatever that is) It has type II collagen, bromelain, tumeric, ginger, and hyaluronic acid. Since it does not list the amount of any of the ingredients I am taking the Dr Axe Multi Collagen with it and added the Now Hyaluronic Acid double strength, which has L Proline, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and grape seed extract to complete the formula, to this and the calcium supplement. The Now Hyaluronic says 1 or 2 capsules and I am using 1 since I don't know exactly how much is in the Bio Schwartz formula. The Joint vibrance had 125mg in it and the Now is 100mg capsules. Anyway, I seem to be gradually getting better. I am thinking about trying the Capraflex again when this all runs out, unless I get excellent results with what I am using. So many products claim glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid when these things are generaly a component of the collagen product, so I am a bit skeptical when they do not give the mg. of the different components.

Judy, a lot of the joint supplements that I have looked at have only about 25 mg of hyaluronic acid in them. I really do like the joint vibrance for the amount of the ingredients and the comprehensive product it is. They only thing is that it runs 51 dollars at Sprouts and lasts 21 days. A hydro-massage bed sounds nice :)

Carolyn, I forgot about that low impact premix for Kick Max. I need to keep that in mind.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. I went back to the announcement regarding changes to the site. I am glad that they are not completely finished....I hope they make it look more like it did before.

Lori, interesting clip...how did you like it?

Valerie, I went to the site of the rower manufacturer and saw how it works. Interesting idea, but I was a little confused. Are you able to change the tension setting "on the fly" while you are doing it, or do you have to change the water level to do that? The scheduler looked at the previous year that I had the mammogram and went by that date. I did not remember that my last one was in June, so I just picked a date that she said would work. Great wildlife viewings ....that is awesome!

Judy, a hydromassage bed sounds really nice. I would want to take a nap after using that...LOL...

Diane Sue, Nice workouts! Good that you got the car back. Magnesium really helped my nighttime leg cramps. I only take one a day, about 3 hours before bedtime. That Rainbow Magnesium supplement has a lot of good things in it. Where did you get it? If they help, why only use occasionally?

Carolyn, the Ellen Barrett’s workouts sound interesting.

Take care,

Good morning ladies,

I really did not do much yesterday other than Linda’s Bounce workout I shared. I liked it and it was perfect for a short workout. It felt good just to have a relaxing day. I did make a window cat bed for our cat. This was spur of the moment and I just used craps of wood I had. Came out great and she has not moved from it. Other than, she is is my arms right now for her morning love.

I am heading to New Bedford this morning and will check in and respond to post this evening. Have a good day all. Going to be very nice here today.

Looks like they updated the forum. It looks great. Will check out later to see if there are new features.

Good Morning,
I was surprised to see that I was still logged in to the forum from last night. I wonder if that is the new default setting or a temporary thing. I plan to take today as a rest day.

Deb, my mammograms are scheduled by the breast specialist and they made sure it was at least a year and a day for the screening mammogram. I think the Ellen Barrett workouts will add variety for me for my less intense days. I looked at some of the JS and Linda Wooldridge on YouTube but they are not quite the same. SB is more pure barre than what I wanted. I’ll see how I like these.

Lori, it’s probably a good idea to take a rest day. It sounds like your body is sending you a message. I was tempted to try the Linda Wooldridge workout that you posted, but decided that I need to stick with my plan for now. It looks like a good one for me. You are right that our workout choices have changed over time. For me it is recognizing the benefits of a wider variety of workout types.

Diane Sue, that Kick Max premix is short , but it includes the leg conditioning drills. I usually avoid Kick Max because of them, but I wanted to do them this week. I hope your nutritional supplements are helpful.

Hello to Judy and Valerie. Have a great day everyone.

Today I did Turbo Fire Hiit Low 20, 20 minutes, average heart rate 143, max 177, 130 calories. I then did Ripped with Hiit Low Impact Hiit mix a first half and two second half, 27 minutes, heart rate average 133, max 164, 172 calories. I finished off with Sarah Beth Yoga morning routine strength and energy 16 minutes and 10 minute cool down yoga hip and legs, 29 minutes, 73 calories. Total time was 76 minutes, 375 calories. I kept trying to use the workout manager and it would not recognize my log in. Then I remembered the change.

Deb, I hope they fix the website a bit. I just ran out of the Calcium for awhile and when I take the joint vibrance it has some calcium in it. I thought I was probably getting enough with it and then meals. Checking though, I was not and it went down even more since then. The Rainbow Light supplement is a good one and I have usually purchased at Sprouts. The last time I got it on Amazon. I will post a link as it is the magnesium calcium + supplement. They use plant based stuff in their vitamins and supplements.

Lori, I bet the rest is good for you and the cat bed sounds like something I could see a cat loving.

Carolyn, I used to use those leg conditioning drills a lot. It seems one could skip the leg drills if they wanted too. I had to log in on my downstairs computer. My upstairs one had me logged in, but I could not log in to the workout manager this morning.

Deb I have not tried the rower yet. it looks a lot like this one.

but we got it thru amazon. we needed it delivered. DH said it's a total body workout but he only used it for about a minute. to be sure it worked. we took the day off today for extensive shopping.

Carolyn, yes, a year and a day is the schedule that is needed.

my legs are sore today from the hike. no overlap between even hard riding and hiking.
