Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/20

Hi Everyone,

Sunday I did 4 Day Split, Lower Body Premix. Monday I did a longer Spinerval, 85 minutes, and yesterday I did Body Beast Bulk Shoulders and Arms.

Deb-Great job on the Live workout! That's a good one!

Lori-It sounds like you found a good substitute rotation to do. At one point I had 3 large balls in my gym, lol! When I first started doing Cathe workouts I ordered the pink Cathe one. Then Chris found a couple on eBay and ordered them. I don't remember why he thought I needed 2 more. They took up so much space that I ended up giving 1 away and deflating and storing the other one as a spare.

Valerie-That mountain bike ride sounds wonderful! We have been thinking about getting a rowing machine too, mostly for Chris to do cardio in the winter since he doesn't like the spin bike.

Diane Sue-Wow, sitting through 19 speeches would be really rough for me too. Sitting like that always aggravates my hips and low back.

Carolyn-Great job with the ICE workout! I'm looking forward to getting back to more of Cathe's workouts after I finish Body Beast. I've missed them.

Have a great day!

Judy

Today I did Low Impact Sweat using only 1 riser height on the step, 49 minutes, heart rate average 124, max 150, met 5.9, 319 calories, 3,176 steps. I then did Fit Tower Advanced Bonus core and stretch off of Legs, Glutes, and Core, 18 minutes, met 3.0, 60 calories, and finished with You Tube Sarah Beth Yoga, 20 minutes, deep hip opening yoga practice, 20 minutes, 44 calories, met 2.0, Total time 87 minutes, 423 calories. I need to get myself put together so if they call and say my husbands Range Rover is fixed I can get them to pick me up to get it.

Lori, I am sure you will enjoy Home Gym Intervals. That is too bad you don't have your large ball. Is it a Stability ball?

Deb, I got a little more sleep last night. At least this time I got more deep and rem sleep. I don't remember why, but Dr Axe said something agout using melatonin only occasionally and not long term. I just know I have nightmares when I have tried it. They were so bad I really did not want to go back to sleep. My husband has to wake me when I have them. I guess I call out for help.

Judy, I had so many stability balls at one time that I gave several to my daughter to use in school. She shared them with other teachers. I still have 3. I only have my two favorites aired up. One is the Bosu Ballast ball that is a bit weighted and the other is a Theraband one that is supposed to not burst. I think over many years I have only aired it up twice and that is just for moving. It does not deflate like some do. I guess why these are my two favorite balls. And the also the fact that they are the larger ones. I think I have a Beach Body one in a hat box on top of my shelves. I was really getting tired of purchasing from Beach Body and getting the same tools over and over again. I guess it gave me items to share. I can not sit for long periods even when I have not injured myself. There is something about the angle of most seating.

Today I did JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster which was 197 calories burned. My average heart rate was 123 and maximum heart rate was 152. I wore my small weighted gloves to help get my heart rate up since I was not jumping.

Deb, I’m glad that you were able to do Live Total Body. There are so many Live workouts now it would be hard to choose one. Keeping a list of the ones that you like is a good idea. I did something similar when I subscribed. I also made notes or comments to help me remember the workout.

Lori, I’m still doing the May rotation but with many substitutions. Yesterday I did ICE Upper Body instead of Lower Body. Today was cardio of choice. I like Home Gym Intervals. I always used the treadmill when doing it, but I might try the rebounder next time.

Judy, you are doing a great job of getting in the longer Spinervals rides. I can’t do more than 45 minutes on the spin bike.

Diane Sue, I considered Low Impact Sweat for today but decided against it. Sitting for long periods is hard for me too with certain types of auditorium chairs.

Valerie, it sounds like your vacation area is really beautiful.

Have a nice day everyone.

Diane sue, there is something about the angle and size of most seating. most chairs are too big for me. if I sit against the back, my feet dangle. I am 5'2" to 5'3" so not ridiculously short, but most standard furniture is made for bigger. I understand it's made to accommodate a range of sizes but that doesn't make it easier. upholstered furniture is the worst.
we had a heck of a rain and hail storm yesterday late in the day with pouring rain. still raining today. if we were here in a camper, we'd be ready to bail, but now we have things to do to spend the day. we're putting the rowing machine together. good thing DH is good at this.

carolyn, I am the same about spinning. about 45 min. I can ride a mt bike outside for 4 hours and a road bike for 3 without a problem, but indoor , no way. spinning is a lot more intense. I don't work that intensely for 45 min straight on outdoor rides. Judy, that is great you can do that.

Carolyn, I usually do the Low Impact Sweat with 2 risers on the step and 5 and 8# dumbbells. Today I was on the fence on the step one. This was my first day trying a step workout since the hip issues. So, I kept the intensity a bit lower, and used Cathe's weights, with only the 1 riser. It was okay, but that was enough, I think. It is so odd, that as long as I am up moving around and keep stretching and foam rolling the pain stays away. It is when I sleep and sit that it comes back. Today when working out and stretching I noticed my hip flexors felt sore. I must be tightening up one area to compensate for the other. I used the foam roller and did some hip leg swings before I started my workout this morning. I keep throwing in upper body workouts, but am not going too heavy. I really don't want to overwork the upper body because I am not working the lower very much.

Valerie, I am 5'4 and have had seats be too tall. It makes my knees hurt when they are dangling. When we went to the Garage restaurant the other day, I told my husband I did not want to sit at one of the tall tables with the tall stools. It would not have worked for me right now. The problem with a lot of seating is they either are tilted back where if want to sit up straight you are just keeping your back free from the back of the seat without support, or things like sofas and recliners tend to have some puffy cushion at the head (at least it hits my head) and pushes my head forward while I am sunk back in the seat. It makes my neck hurt. I had that problem with sitting in my husbands recliner when I had that breast surgery and I kept trying to fold up a blanket behind my low back to push me out some. It is not that way with my husband who is 6'1. I remember being stuck in a campground right next to the lake with our fifth wheel and the winds and hail were terrible with tornado warnings and no where to go. It was at night and pretty frightening. I am sure you and your husband will enjoy trying out the rowing machine when it is put together. Our putting things together is usually a unified project. I read the instructions and set out the correct parts since my husband does not read instructions. Then he does the work. I remember a swingset that he put together and got to a snag because he could not find a correct part. They had given us the bigger swingset. They let us keep it, but it was quite an event.

Good evening ladies,

Another LEKfit Bounce with intervals this morning. I added in an extra SB leg target to completely exhaust my legs. Looks like I need a pilates ring also for some of Linda’s workouts. Going to get one on Amazon. They are cheap enough. Anyone have one? The LEKfit Challenge is for 3 weeks. Hoping to be ready to start Linda’s rotation then if my son ever brings over the ball!!

Deb...I could have easily started Linda’s rotation with another workout of hers but I was so annoyed with my son that I needed to move on. Asked him 3 times to bring the ball and nope! I love he uses things of mine but he is forgetful at times returning them. I need to update the Live list. Been meaning to this week. Hard to believe she is just about at 200 workouts! Looks like you are back onto your workouts. Great job!

Judy...you amaze me with the length of rides. I top out at about 40 mins when I spin. That is a good time for me. After that I do not enjoy it. I had the Cathe pink ball too. My son popped it when he moved back sense I had another. I told he he could have just deflated it!

Diane Sue...I am looking forward to Home Intervals. I may alternate between bounce and treadmill. Yes stability ball. He uses it in place of a bench. It is a larger one and works well for that purpose. I know what you mean about nightmares. Can’t remember what Prescription I needed to take and it caused such vivid dreams. Hated it and needed change the medication. I have a foam roller I use every now and then. It seems to help when I am regular with it.

Carolyn..I use my 1lb weights all the time with JS’s workouts (not her weight workouts but pretty much everything else). Really intensifies the workout for me.

Valerie...I am not quite 5’2” so I hear you on the chairs! I have a foot stool I need at work. Otherwise, my lower back feels stressed at the end of the day. Keeping my feet on the stool (it is on an angle and not hugely tall) helps tremendously.

I had a dermatology appt this morning. My annual skin screen. He removed a spot from my back. It kind of stings right now. Not a huge pain but enough that I am aware of it. Will have the results in a few days. I am sure it will be fine. He is extra cautious with me due to my family history with skin cancer.

Have a great night all!

Lori, maybe you just have to go visit your son and pick up your ball at the same time :) I hear you though. I mentioned my Supreme Ninety workout set to my granddaughter once and never have got it back. She has those and teen meta Tracey Anderson along with a couple of others. Now she is going to nanny this summer and leave for college dorms. I am glad she likes them. I told her to keep the Zumba workouts. MY grandson has my super band and the dvd for them. I loaned him dumbbells and I finally just went and bought another set. For some reason he thought they were his dads who I doubt would lift weights. My daughter removed a cancer from the middle of my back once and I had to take a piece of dowel rod and use a rubber band to attach a cotton ball so I could put Neosporin on it. Hopefully it is nothing for you.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did something different, circuit training at Planet Fitness. I did mostly back exercises. I also used the assisted pull up machine. The best part was using the massage chair afterwards! It was so nice today that I also went for a short walk and spent some time outside.

Lori-I don't have a pilates ring but I should get one. I don't think I have any of Linda's workouts that use one but I'm sure I will at some point. That's good that you had your skin screening. I will need to schedule mine soon too.

Diane Sue-I've had really strange dreams using melatonin. It works for me but I don't like to use it too much.

Valerie-Thanks! I think it's great that you can ride so long outdoors. I don't spin as much as I used to. I try to do one ride of 80-90 minutes every week or so to keep my endurance up.

Carolyn-Thanks! Great job with the JS Fat Blaster workout. Is that one on a DVD or Youtube?

Hi to Deb!

Have a good night!

Judy

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Ripped/W/HIIT Low Impact HIIT ( workout #2), 29 minutes, 165 calories. Also did 10325 steps!

Judy, great workouts! I have 2 stability balls in my workout area and they take up a lot of room. I can't imagine having 3. A massage chair sounds wonderful.

Diane Sue, Did Dr Axe say why he didn't think you should take melatonin for an extended period? I have not had any nightmares etc with the melatonin. I want to see if it works over a period of time....I don't think taking it here and there does much. Thanks for the Sarah Beth Yoga for hip opening. That is what I think I need for my right hip. It has been aching lately. I think it is because I gained some weight back...it did not hurt at all when I lost all the weight with my gastro situation. Did you get your husband's car back? Your pain seems like it might be arthritis. Usually that abates when you are stretching or moving, but stiffens and is painful when not moving for a while.

Valerie, nice that you are now inside etc during a storm like you had, and have other things to do. How is the rowing machine?

Lori, buy another ball...you deserve a new one! It is good that your doctor is very cautious with you and removed that spot. I love getting the new Live lists! It's so nice that you do that for everyone. :)

Hi to Carolyn,

Take care,

Deb-The massage chair was wonderful! I think I'm going back and use it again today. From what I remember when I was working at the health food store, some people seem to be able to use melatonin regularly and have no issues with it. For me, it's been hit or miss. Sometimes I have weird dreams and feel kind of groggy the next day and other times I don't notice anything.

Today I did Fit Split Low Impact cardio, 28 minutes, met 5.9, 182 calories, 1,814 steps. I then did Kelly Coffey Body Design yoga and cooldown, 16 minutes, met 2.3, 41 calories. I then did Ice Muscle Meltdown biceps, 19 minutes, met 4.7, 78 calories, and finished with Sarah Beth Yoga cool down hips and legs 12 minutes, 28 calories. Total time wa 75 minutes, calories burned 329.

Judy, the massage chair sounds nice. I think that we may have Planet Fitness here. I will avoid nightmares as much as possible.

Deb, nice work on the steps. Mine have been better than I thought they would be with me doing all of these yoga workouts. I think it is probably because I am not sitting as much. I am spending more time doing other chores. I think you are right on the arthritis. I have read symptoms of all kinds of things that cause pain and they all lead to arthritis. It is not only the hip as here lately I have had my feet hurt, ankles, knees, last night my elbow was throbbing. Once I am moving everything feels pretty good. My daughter asked if I had an arthritis panel done and I told her I did. The tests came back with some slight abnormalities. She thinks I need to have things checked more thoroughly. I told her I have noticed the joints in my wrists turning and protruding more, my arms will not go completely straight, and just some odd things I keep working around. I know with my arthritis, once something is inflamed it takes awhile to get it to settle back down. I keep up with my joint supplements. I noticed my calcium is low so started taking half a dose of that and added some hylauronic acid capsules for joint cushioning this week along with the other joint supplements. I even went so far to see if those supplements could cause problems, but found nothing there other than not taking them if you are using blood thinners or having surgery.
I don't recall Dr Axe giving a reason on the melatonin. I was checking to see if the adaptogenic herb ashwaghanda could cause problems with sleeping since it is in my pre-workout supplement and also in the bone broth protein meal. I just did not want to use the protein meal at night if that was what was causing me to not sleep. It turns out it does not bother my sleep. That herb is supposed to help with stress and anxiety.

I got already yesterday for nothing. I called the automotive place after 5 and they still had some balancing to do on the vehicle and said mid morning today. I did the cardio and yoga then showered and got dressed and came back and did the biceps and more yoga. I wanted to be ready because they said they could come and pick me up to get the vehicle. So, I am still waiting and it is almost 11 o'clock.

Today I did STS Total Body which was 81 minutes and 283 calories burned. My average heart rate was 104 and maximum heart rate was 150.

I finally preordered the new LITE series yesterday. I saw that the presale prices end June 4th and I didn’t want to forget to do it.

Has anyone done Ellen Barrett workouts? I remember thinking years ago that they looked boring to me because I wanted more intensity. Now I’m more interested in trying them. She seems to have similarities to Linda Wooldridge or JS fusion workouts.

Deb, congratulations on getting over 10000 steps and completing Low Impact HiiT. You had a good workout day.

Judy, your workout at the gym sounds good. I’m sure that the massage chair felt wonderful.

Lori, I’ve never used a Pilates ring. I’m not sure that I know what it is!

Diane Sue, good workout today as usual.

Hello to Valerie.

Deb, here is a link to melotonin in general on Dr Axe site. It really says some people can take it up to two years. He gives a list of drug interactions, and says to keep it on the low end of dosage. Maybe the other article was talking about the valarian than was listed right next to melatonin. https://draxe.com/melatonin-dosage/

Carolyn, I still have two worksheets printed up ready to do STS Total Body on my clipboard. This hip issue has side tracked my plans.

Deb here is the excerpt from 20 ways to fall asleep fast on Dr Axe.
18. Use natural sleep supplements
If you find yourself facing a chronic lack of sleep, consider natural sleep supplements like valerian root, passion flower and melatonin. Research shows that these natural sleep supplements may help to improve sleep quality without producing side effects. Often, these are available in a tea or in supplement tablets. These can get you over the hump when you’ve had several sleepless nights and help your body get some much-needed rest. But these should be used for a limited time only — if you find that minimal sleep has become the norm over several weeks or months, consult your doctor. (21, 22)

Good evening ladies,

I was so tired last night and went to bed shortly after posting yesterday. My husband was away last night on business so it was just GiGi and I and she was fine with the early bed time. :) This morning I still was tired. I did a shorter workout that included a SB back upper thigh target and a BBS dance. Total time was 35 mins. I was pleased I at least got something in.

I am off tomorrow and looking forward to a 4 day weekend. I need it. We are going to my brothers house on Saturday (2 hour drive) to plant flowers on our parents grave then having lunch with him. Will be a nice day. These are the only plans we have and we are fine with this.

Diane Sue...funny you should mention Tracey Anderson. I never had the desire to do one of her workouts. She is very popular just not for me. Lately, I feel I just randomly ache. No idea what I do to cause one pain or another but they are there. I guess this is aging. I am fortunate that I and I really mean all of us in this group continue to be as active as we are.

Deb...great steps!! Nice! I bought a stability ball on amazon and it will be here on Saturday. Quicker than getting mine back from my son!

Valerie...yes please tell us about the rower. Have you used it? Do you love it? What brand is it? I have used a Concept one before many many years ago. Mid 90’s. It was a great rower.

Caroyln...great job with STS Total Body. I have not done any Ellen Barrett workouts but she seems to be liked. Funny how years ago no way would we do a certain instructor. Now...they look pretty good!

Judy...a massage chair sounds heavenly! :)

Have a great night all!

Lori it’s a Waterrower. Has s big kettle shaped water container you push back and forth. We got it together and are filling the water container which needs water but not “well water”. Huh? Either house is well water!! So we ran it thru a brita filter too we hiked today do not using yet.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Compound Giant Sets, 39 minutes, 199 calories. I went for my mammogram and found out that they made my appointment not quite a year after the last one, so they couldn't do it as you can only get a preventative one once a year. Now I have to go back in a couple weeks. :(.

Judy, Did you go back and have that chair massage again? So far the melatonin has not done any negative things like dreams etc, and I am not seeing much of an improvement in sleep. I want to give it a chance to work, so I will take it for maybe another week or so.

Diane Sue, thanks for the link on the Dr. Axe info for melatonin. I like how it says to consult your DR....what would they do? Prescribe one of those scary sleep meds? Did you go back to that previous joint supplement that you mentioned here? You had said you took it for years and it seemed to help. That stinks about the car pickup.

Carolyn, STS Total Body is a great workout! Have not heard of Ellen Barrett...what type of workouts are they?

Lori, it sounds like you may need a couple of rest days. Tired and achy can be a sign of over training. That is so nice that you do that with your brother each year.

Valerie, interesting on needing water for the rower...what does that do? I need to Google that brand to see what it looks like.

Take care,

Deb the weight of the water jug provides the resistance and can be adjusted by more or less water in the jug. It makes a little sloshing sound to be more authentic, I assume . We are hiking again today so might test it this weekend. We have been pretty active and weather mostly good. Plan to use indoor gear when outdoor is not good.

insurance is relentless about it being at least a year. The scheduler usually looks up my last one before talking about a date . I would br ticked off with wasted day and trip. Bet you won’t get fooled again

Lori I think Deb is right. you might need a few days off for R & R

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I went to Planet Fitness again and did circuit training, mostly legs & chest, then 30 minutes on a recumbent bike. I used the massage chair afterwards. They also have hydromassage beds. I might try that next week.

Deb-I agree about consulting a doctor for insomnia. I don't think that would help at all. He must have just put that in there as a disclaimer for liability purposes. I would never try one of those prescription sleeping pills.

Carolyn-Great job with STS Total Body! I've never tried Ellen Barrett's workouts.

Valerie-The rower sounds interesting. I'll have to look that brand up. I'm not familiar with it.

Diane Sue-I should get an arthritis panel done. My joint supplement supplement has hylauronic acid in it, but only a small amount.

Lori-That's great that Linda has a rebounder workout! I agree with Deb & Valerie, it sounds like you might need a couple of rest days. I've been feeling the same way. I was planning to start my active rest week June 1, but I might bump it up and start it this weekend. I agree that we are all so fortunate to still be as active as we are.

Have a great day!

Judy
