Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/8

Oh my yes, lip fillers are a big mistake most of the time. If Hollywood people can't get it right, the rest of us shouldn't try. It seems to have gone out of style somewhat. I've had laser treatment for my skin. I have rosacea. or I did, for decades. I was getting some red inflamed areas and the meds didn't help. DH has it too. I think rosacea is contagious to some degree, since he is the only one in his family, and many in my family do. whatever! that is my opinion only. we both had a series of laser blasts and it made an amazing difference especially for me. my skin was getting painful, swollen sometimes. the laser took it all away. I was so happy with the results! I haven't used any topicals now for 10 years. DH still uses some. they are as expensive or more than the laser was. eventually both of us may need an eyelid lift. DH especially has drooping lids that will interfere with his vision eventually. I'm not opposed to cosmetic treatments, but would choose carefully, wisely. sometimes a cosmetic procedure is the best medical choice too, as it was for us. lip fillers and most botox seem excessive for insurance to cover.

this is a fairly new slow cooker, last 10 years or so. I remember some kind of safety issues where they didn't heat up fast enough, causing food safety issues, and manufacturers responded by upping the temps. mine works for beans and some soups but chicken texture was 'boiled". not so great. I am not too comfortable with leaving anything cooking while I'm not here, so not a high use thing for me. dates are awfully sweet and I'm so -so on the texture. I used to use them in baking. there was a recipe for a chocolate chip date cake that I just remembered. :D not sure how well that would fare these days with people limiting sugars.

Deb congrats on a good nights sleep. something so basic but so hard to get. The dentist's entire staff didn't stay, but many did and that helped the transition. It's a very nice office and short drive to get there. so many factors come into making it a comfortable process... or not.

I got sore spots from MTB so I'm not doing enough lately. didn't have trouble doing it, except lighter weight in my right hand for over head moves. I need to be more consistent with my workouts. my shoulder is bothering me again, same spot, same thing as before. I thought I was done with that. guess not.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was SB’s Feel Good Arms and Cardio. This is a favorite of mine and I use heavier weights than what she uses. I followed up with her Bis and Tris target to finish off my arms. Then continued on with Lekfts newest bounce from yesterday skipping the weight intervals. Total times was 54 mins / 364 cal.

Deb...good job with the sleep! I usually get 7 hours max every night. I am cranky if I get less. I have had my yoga toes for a while...going to check out the newer ones.

Diane Sue...I wanted to like the Addiction workouts but just could not get into them. I bought them on Amazon and ended up returning them. I think they were like $100 so they needed to go back if I was not going to use them. I usully do not spend that much for a dvd set but they sounded so good. Dream Body was another set I did not like. They were way too frantic for me.

Valerie...I rarely use my slow cooker. Wish I did use it more. I am not opposed to cosmetic surgery. I am a firm believer if something is bothering you go ahead and fix it. No big deal. My motherinlaw had her eyes done because she felt so old. They came out lovely and she is so happy! How can you beat that? It is when people go overboard.

Judy...I thought the same as Deb did with your 90 minute “recovery” ride! Good for you!

Hi to Carolyn!!!

Lori, I wish I could get 7 hours of sleep at night. I just felt like I hit a wall after lunch. I got so sleepy and had to leave to run to the bank. When I came back I just laid on the couch and fell asleep, woke and read and fell back to sleep. I am still tired tonight. Hopefully the napping did not mess up my night. I don't remember what I paid for the Addiction workouts, but I think they were way less, or I would not have bought them. I don't generally pick up someone's workouts that I have never done before and spend that much. I just remember trying to split the workout and doing one side one day and the other the next, so I could add weights or something to it. I probably should take a look at them again. I think it has probably been around 5 years since I have done them. The word frantic makes me think of Insanity. That is another set that I really did not love. I always felt I needed a warm up before the workout warm up. I still have the bonus set because I liked the Sports moves one, abs, and upper body work. I sold the rest. I sort of liked the recovery workouts, but I don't think they would have sold as well without all of them being there.

Carolyn, we must have posted around the same time. I have a certain marinade I almost always use on pork tenderloin and a lot of my pork dishes. It is from Cooking Light and used orange juice and ginger with soy sauce in the marinade. I tried changing it up and my husband and family didn't like it as much. I saw another Moroccan Chicken recipe in Better Homes and Gardens Slow Cooker light cookbook. It was pretty much the same seasoning, but no sweet potatoes or dates. I would probably like it like that. I had some today for lunch :) I am thinking it may just be finding a slow cooker that actually had some sort of temperature settings, if there is such a thing. I have a small one and a large one and they both cook very hot. I think the smaller one may be a little bit less on the boiling the food.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did KCM Strength & Stamina Workout #1. 37 minutes, 199 calories.

Carolyn, good job with the JS workouts. Are you focusing on those for your workouts now?

Diane Sue, I really like using a slow cooker. The NG women are really touting those new Insta-pot cookers. I think they may also replace a pressure cooker.

Valerie, that's great that the laser treatment worked so well for you. I only knew one person with rosacea. Hers was not that bad.

Lori, I would kill for 7 hours a night consistently. The FitBit had me sleeping 6+ hours but it was not really right. I was having a bad night and actually got up to eat at around midnight. Then I read some more. It still counts that time in your "sleep" hours.

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Wednesday I did the 4DS Kickbox Warmup, then Jessica Smith Metabolism Booster Upper Body Circuit and I finished with Barlates Mat Abs. Yesterday I did ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast Basic Premix 6. That was the longest ICE workout that I have done so far, 94 minutes. I had to modify a couple of the Blizzard Blast moves. Today I am taking a rest day. I may do a Yin Yoga session later.

Deb-Nice job with Strength & Stamina. That has become one of my favorite KCM workouts, along with Plateau Buster.

Lori-Thanks for the link to the heavy bag. I saved it in my Amazon wish list. That one might work for me. I wouldn't like an app picking out my workouts for me either.

Diane Sue-I need to use my slow cooker more. I have the Skinny Slow Cooker recipe book by Taste of Home. I have a few recipes marked to try out.

Valerie- I agree about lip fillers. I would be afraid to try that. Laser treatment seems like a good thing.

Hi to Carolyn!

Judy

I did a 40 min spin premix yesterday afternoon. I forget which one, an older disk. wow judy that is a long one!. 94 min.

I'm all for doing what you can to improve your appearance. maybe there are people who use lip fillers and it doesn't look funny.... then it would go unnoticed. good cosmetic procedures should not scream that you've "done something". I have no problem with people doing whatever they want but I don't think that insurance should generally cover it. reconstruction after cancer surgery or a disfiguring accident should be covered, but vanity projects should come out of pocket.

Deb my rosacea didn't look that bad but I'd had it a long time. some very irritated spots. it was worth the money to get the treatments. it's weird but insurance would pay for the topicals that were expensive and didn't work for me, but they would not pay for laser that cost much less in the long run.

I have never looked at an insta-pot but they sure have gotten popular. can anyone add anything? worth it?

Hi Ladies,
This morning I did KCM’s Body Design Warm Up and Cardio Bootcamp. That was 16 minutes and 123 calories burned. Average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate 154. After that I did WS3 Yoga Strength +Stretch for an additional 31 minutes and 66 calories.

Deb, I went back to the WS3 rotation that came with the series and skipped to phase II. It’s an eight week rotation and I only did part of it the first time around. I usually get 7 1/2–8 hours of sleep a night. I don’t function well on less than that.

Judy, great workouts this week! That ICE premix was quite a workout.

Valerie, I agree with you, that cosmetic surgery should make a person look and/or feel better but shouldn’t be the obvious. The lip enhancement leaves some people looking ridiculous. I have not done a lot of research on the Insta Pot, but I read a couple of articles on them. Some people are intimidated by the touchpad and find it too confusing. Since I already have a pressure cooker and the slow cookers I haven’t paid much attention. They are really popular now. Daughter number 2 considered getting one but hasn’t yet. She wants to replace a rice cooker (an appliance that makes no sense to me) and add the pressure cooker function.

Hello to Lori and Diane Sue.

My workout was cut short at 10 minutes, so it is hardly worth mentioning. I did the first 10 minutes of Strong and Sweaty Bootcamp (which I had planned to add the Zcut power Strength bonus. Maybe I will get that added to something tomorrow. I burned 67 calories in that 10 minutes :) We had friends come over a earlier than expected and we had lunch and visited a good part of the afternoon. I could use the rest anyway. I have no desire to go back and do a workout now. I ran to Sprouts for a couple of things and after reading the Whole 30 requirements I perused Kombucha tea ingredients. I ended up buying the GTs as it has no sugar added to it on the ingredients. I guess those with sugar on the label add it after they have brewed the kombucha. You add it when you are making it so the bacteria can use the sugar to grow so that it is a probiotic, but I didn't know some sellers add some back to it. I think it was Kevita that I read added sparkling water and has sugar as does the Suja which I have been buying. I bought some Tantric Tumeric GTs because it has ginger, tumeric, and carrot juice in it. It also has kiwi juice in it. The kiwi would not be good for someone who is allergic to latex. I thought it might be a good anti-inflammatory drink.

Deb, I really like the way Strength and Stamina uses the kettle bell between weights. The InstaPot has a lot of features and some have more than others. Steamer, slow cooker, pressure cooker, sterilizer for things like bottles and canning jars, pasturize milk, yogurt maker, saute, egg cooker. Anyway, I would like the 8 quart 9 in one. I think there is even a cake setting for moist type cakes. Which model Fit Bit did you get? Mine shows details and graphs on my sleep patterns, I can see every time I was awake as red on the graph. If I tap the graph I can see exact time and percentages in the different stages and time periods. For instance last night I slept 6 hr 35 minutes, I was awake 51 minutes, I went to bed at 11:24 and got up at 6:50. I was awake 51 minutes 11% , Rem sleep 38 minutes 8%, light sleep 65%, 4 hr 51 minutes, Deep sleep 1 hr 6 minutes, 14%. Then I can see approximate time period each stage was. For two days this week it only showed when I went to bed and got up and time asleep with how many times awake, restless, and awake restless. I thought maybe it did this because of the internet problem. It does this to me once in awhile and I try shutting the Fit Bit down to get it back.

Judy, that is a long ice workout. I am not sure that I have done that pre-mix. I use my slow cooker quite a lot with family dinners. I have several slow cooker cookbooks. One is Paleo soups and stew. I have the Fix it and Forget it slow cooker lightly and Better homes and gardens light slow cooker. There is another that is a more natural food one that I have used quite a bit. I cannot remember the name of it though. When my daughter had the laser in her office I let her do laser hair removal for my underarms and she practiced on my veins on my legs. Theirs was a yag though. It didn't work so well on the leg veins. Great on the hair removal though. They got rid of it though as they said it was not worth what they were getting out of it.

Valerie, when my daughter first started med school her goal was to be a reconstructive surgery for birth defects. She ended up choosing dermatology though and they are really not wanting to do so much with the cosmetic end of it. They take care of a lot of teen skin issues, skin cancers, and that sort of thing. I remember a friend in getting a noticeable bump on her nose shaved off. I can see someone doing something like that if they want to spend the money. It made a huge difference in her looks. I agree, vanity projects should come out of pocket. A lot of rules on what can be done and expenses with insurance does not make sense. That is like my knee surgery. The doctor just wanted to go for the mri and the HMO said no, I had to get an X ray first then get approved for the mri. Let alone they had the mri set up and I had to 100 miles to OKC only to find out it was not approved and I had to wait for the X ray. They could have saved themselves money on that X ray. That is silly that they would not pay for the laser for the rosacea.

Carolyn, I have a small rice cooker steamer. I purchased it because it had a divider where I could cook a piece of salmon and some broccoli for just me or I could cook some rice which usually came out well as long as I didn't leave it sit after it cut off because it would get crusty around the edges. I always kind of wished I had a bigger one, but I couldn't see doing it as it would be another space hog. I think the Insta Pot would be a good investment to replace my slow cooker and give me several appliance uses in one. My slow cooker not only cooks hot, but it was so hot that the plastic hinges and lock cracked and broke around the screws through the glass lid. I have duct tape over the screw holes and have to be careful of steam burns when I pry open the lid with a knife enough to grab it with a pot holder. There is nothing to protect me when I open it. It needs replaced. My daughter in law likes hers. I don't know which one she got.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did FS Boot Camp Kickbox premix only, 34 minutes, 174 calories. I used weighted gloves this time. I thought the calorie burn would be larger.

Judy, that premix was certainly long! You deserved a rest day after that. I will put Plateau Buster on my "to do" list.

Valerie, I feel the same, if you want a procedure and it makes you feel better, go for it. However, sometimes people go overboard, like with lip fillers. The union here for the police pretty much got them anything they wanted. I believe it has since been changed.

Carolyn, I have 2 slow cookers, and a pressure cooker, and a rice cooker. I use the slow cookers occasionally, have not used the pressure cooker for about 15 years. I always use the rice cooker, it makes is so easy, no need to watch it etc and it comes out perfectly every time.

Diane Sue, that is too bad about your workout being cut short, but may be it was for the best. I have the same FitBit as you I believe. It tells me all that same info. Once in a while I don't get that detail, but not often. A couple of times the explanation was that I needed to wear it higher on my arm. I think you would make good use of the Insta Pot.

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

Deb, I would have thought your calorie burn would be higher too. Sometimes I dont get why I can feel like I am putting out so much more effort and heartrate should be way up there and it is not. Then sometimes I dont feel I am working that hard and I get a higher heart rate and calorie burn. Or sometimes I do two different workouts the same day and the easier one gives higher readings. I kind of felt the beeak in the workout may have been due. My hip and knee were not feeling that great and I was kind of having second thoughts on my choice anyway. It is okay today though.

This morning I did Strong and Sweaty Bootcamp, 45 minutes, 286 calories, met 5.9, 2,117 steps. I then did Z cut power strength bonus workout with stretch, 20 minutes, met 4.5, 100 calories, 187 steps. Total time was 65 minutes, 386 calories.
I used Cathe's weights on Bootcamp.
Z Cut Power strength 10# dumbbell max suggested weight she uses 3 rounds 11 minutes
10 competition burpees, 10 pistol squats with db
40 chair hops
10 dive bombers

yesterday was a mixture. 15 on the treadmill with hand weights uphill, then HR abs, and then MM biceps. I may have to go back to Ortho for my shoulder. I think it's been 2 years or more so hopefully I can get another shot and be good for a while. I've been moderating things for my right arm for a while now, some days bothers me more than others.

I also passed on the rice cooker. I do rice, turns out fine. never thought seriously of it. I mix it up white, brown, wild rice, quinoa, farro, and a few other grains so no rice cooker. I don't want clutter from little specialized appliances. the last thing I bought was the spiralizer and it has not gotten used much. last year the zucchini crop didn't do very well and I didn't like the texture of the "noodles". by the time they were hot, they were mushy. I used to do beans in the slow cooker but everything else tasted boiled. I think it only has time settings and things were done way before they were supposed to be.

I came across a recipe for a "nacho" type appetitzer using sweet potato tater tots. I've seen sweet potato "fries" but never tater tots. this a product you've seen or tried? it looked like a tasty appetizer and every one likes nachos. I watch for easy things that can be put together quickly with minimal fresh products.

it's sad how ridiculous most lip fillers look. Does the injected material gradually goes away by itself? what are people thinking when they go ahead with it?

Today is a rest day. I had the investment club meeting at my house today and I was up early to finish preparing. It was a good and productive meeting as usual. I bought some pastries at the grocery store instead of baking something and I didn’t like them at all. It was all much too sweet. I also served fruit and yogurt and a sausage casserole so the brunch wasn’t a complete disaster.

Deb, I used my “time saving” appliances and cookware much more when I was working. Now I mostly use them when I have the family here.

Valerie, I hope your shoulder gets better soon.

Diane Sue, you probably needed that rest day yesterday.

Hi to Judy and Lori.

Valerie, anything that says tater tots on them I do not purchase. That usually means processed into something and additives and fats that I do not want. It seems sweet potatoes are showing up more and more in freezers. They have frozen sweet potato chunks and riced sweet potatoes. I won't buy the riced ones again. They were sweet and mushy. I usually have not problem with zucchini noodles. I cook them with a little oil in a skillet and only briefly. I have seen soups with them in it and thought I would only add at the time of serving. I noticed that the Whole 30 quick and easy cookbook has several noodle bowl recipes. They put the stuff together and add the with noodles that you make, sweet potato, zucchini, carrot shreds at the end for only 1 to 2 minutes just to leave them crisp tender. There is one for spiralized potatoes that is a southwest noodle bowl that puts the potatoes in for only 3 minutes. This is why I am pretty sure I should have used my own idea when I did the sweet potatoes in the slow cooker recipe and just roasted them and tossed them in at the end. I have made too many Paleo recipes with butternut squash added to chilis, etc. and they were always mushy. It has left me not wanting to have butternut squash unless it is just a baked one. I really do not know why they came up with putting that stuff in a slow cooker. I am using my Kitchenaid Spiralizer a lot more than I did the one where you turn the crank on. I like to spiralize sweet potatoes and cook them in the skillet and toss a poached egg on top. I think the use different things for fillers. Some will break down after awhile. I know they take body fat from other areas of the body and can put it in other areas to fill in spaces. The doctor wanted to do that in an area on me when I had my surgery and I didn't do it. I am not willing to go back for something like that that no one else can see but me and my husband and it is minor. Personally the less I have to go near a doctor the better.

Carolyn, my daughter picked up some pastries for her jewelry party and they were so sweet and had that artificial flavoring and ingredient taste. We do yogurt with granola and fruit a lot when we have our family brunch. I had planned on making a raspberry cream cheese pound cake for our guests yesterday and had the ingredients out softening, but when the called and were coming early, I put it all up and my husband went and picked up brisket and buns and I made up a kale salad with cherry cranberries and almonds and some corn (the only "vegetable" my husband will eat) I keep telling him pork and beans and corn are not vegetables. That worked fine for throwing together a quick lunch. Your investment meetings sound like they would be enjoyable. It always requires so much to have guests in, but is fun. My biggest problem with time saving appliances and choppers, etc. is that I have to wash them. Generally I wash most of them by hand. When I want grated cheese for just my husband I use a hand grater rather than get out the food processor. I find the blocks of cheese keep longer if I don't grate the whole thing at once if I am not going to use it fairly quickly. I rarely buy in already grated packages because of the cellulose added. I make my dressings with the blender and use the food processor a lot. My 4 slice toaster is my counter space hog that I rarely use. It gets used when I have grandchildren overnight. If I had somewhere else it would fit I would stuff it in the cabinet.
