Pentagenarians & Beyond" W/B 3/5

Good Morning,
Today was a cardio day for me and I did JS 40 Minute Mega Burn. I used 1 pound weighted gloves.

Deb, I didn't do Bonus Abs with RUUB, but I paused quite a bit to record my weights used and to get water. That gave me a longer total time. My strength training workouts usually take longer than the DVD time. With metabolic and bootcamp workouts I don't pause much, if at all.

Diane Sue, I have a Bosu, but I never did much with it. I bought it a very long time ago to work on my balance. I need to get it out for my husband who really needs to work on balance. He is one reason that I wanted the Jumpsport with the support bar. I am always looking for activities that he might do and enjoy.

Valerie, I have the same food problems when I visit my family. I usually start my visit with a trip to the grocery store so that there is something I can eat. I can then enjoy the food that they have prepared without over doing it and I add my own vegetables.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

we went snowshoeing for about 2 hours this morning. weather was NOT good or we would have gone longer. snow was awful... heavy watersoaked stuff and deep. we were sinking in a foot down even with snowshoes. we made a bad choice! will hike tomorrow. there is so much low level snow we can't get to anything good.

I have never used a bosu or a trampoline. I don't even have a good idea of how they are used especially the bosu. will need to take a look on utube.

we have mostly settled on pizza as food of choice for family visits. we get a take -and -bake vegie pizza from Papa Murphy's. ( pizza chain that is everwhere in the northwest) with a green salad, DH and I are fine, and Papa Murphys has choices the rest of the family will eat too. they don't need to eat salad but I can't go without. not everyone is overweight because not much food is eaten but the Budweiser sure does disappear. I get a box of salad greens and mix up some dressing if I don't have any along. we bring our coffee, espresso machine, oatmeal or dry cereal. we set it up either in our camper or in their kitchen, whatever works. we are much more active than they are. I always wake up starving! no way could I not eat breakfast.
Carolyn I eat more vegies in a day than most of them eat in months. I don't expect them to buy and cook for me so I buy my own. I don't want family visits to be more difficult than they are already so I travel prepared.

Today I did Tracey Staehle Cardio Kick Box Challenge, 60 minutes, 402 calories followed by her Strike Zone, doing combos 3,4,5,6 and the stretch, 28 minutes, 181 calories. Total time was 88 minutes, 583 calories. I have got in over 10,000 steps several times over the last week when I have done cardio. My husband and I went out to lunch today and it was family dinner night.

Deb, there is a lot of agility work in these Bosu workouts. I found it hard balancing on one leg while standing on the Bosu during the stretch. Even the male advanced exerciser was having some problems. Mindy is just balanced and chattering like crazy. No problem for her. I still have a weight work Cardio Coach workout and I have an itrain yoga workout. I know Grace can be pretty hard. I remember doing one that was around 30 minutes and was extremely tough intervals.

Carolyn, I have a few different Bosu workouts. I like it for some of the weight work. Tracey Staehle has several workouts that use it. Amy Bento Ross has a nice Bosu strength workout on her Hi/Lo Dome workout. I used to use just some certain chapters on some of Tracey's workouts, I think one was Sweatfest that had a premix with balancing on the Bosu. I used it to work on my balance. I think it is something important for all of us as we age and also it helps with posture. The bottom of my feet are sore from all of the balancing and jogging on the Bosu today. I have not done a workout on it a long time. I think when we moved here I did a CIA workout on Double Cardio with Sseasun Zeigar. I had stopped using it after knee surgery because my knee was not stable enough yet. I am often working out longer on weight workouts just writing things down and changing weights up. It always moves faster if you do not have to write it down.

Valerie, there are all different types of workouts you can do with a bosu. The workout yesterday was mostly on top of it or leaping up onto it and doing balance work with a small med ball. They picked it up near the end for some strength type work and flipped it over on the dome for some core work hanging on to it in a plank and doing mountain climbers and that sort of thing. I used to have a small Mr Coffee coffee pot in our fifth wheel when we had it. I always enjoyed my morning coffee. That is too bad that the snow shoeing didn't work out. Papa Murphy's is pretty good. We have those here. The only thing is when we have our entire family together it takes awhile to bake all of the pizzas.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did the Body by Simone Dance Cardio workout. The title is deceiving...it is really a total body workout with cardio in between.

Carolyn, what it the JS Mega Burn like? I need to go over to YouTube to see more of her videos. I like her a lot. Is this one a DVD that you purchased?

Valerie, too bad about the snow shoeing...It's so odd how your side of the country is having the weather we usually have in March. Mo Papa Murphy's here. So you are able to purchase a half baked pizza from a pizza restaurant and bring it home to finish? We used to have one place around here that did that...it was open for years but finally closed.

Judy, I saw your post on MFP about the power outage. It must have not gotten to your area, or were you using your phone to post?

Diane Sue, I have some iTrain weight workouts too...but don't really like following a weight workout with audio instruction for some reason. The Bosu sounds hard!

No workout today, I have a test this morning....lower GI...

Take care,

Deb, I watched some of that workout and it seemed more like a cardio weight circuit type of cardio. I hope that your appointment goes well today . I know you are still searching for the hep you need.

We are having a record cold wet winter just like California. Want spring!
Pizza is picked up unbaked on a giant paper platter. You stick in oven for 15 min and have fresh hot baked pizza. Like take out but much better. Don't know how many places have papa Murphy but I have used enough to own a franchise. Lots of topping choices and not expensive "love at 425 degrees". To quote them.

did a hike this morning about 2 hours not too hard. then the rains moved in and we bailed. will try to do ramped upper body later today.

Today I did Slow and Heavy Legs and Shoulders. I like the Slow and Heavy series for occasional use. I'm sure my legs and shoulders will be burning tomorrow. I followed that with the STS Extended Stretch which is a 14 minute yoga like stretch.

Deb, the Jessica Smith workout is from her 30 Day Plan, a 3 DVD series. There are several types of workouts in the series including HiiT, Intervals and circuit. I look at workouts on YouTube, but I never do them as my workout. Now if I had Lori's skill with downloading and editing I might try them.

We don't have Papa Murphy's here, but it sounds like a good option. I like freshly baked pizza with a lot of vegetable toppings.

Have a great day.

Today I did Strong and Sweaty PHAT Extreme mix #2 , This one repeats all of the rounds 4 times. The final two are Rnd 1 and Rnd 2 back to back, 1 set. So that is 4 sets of each exercise. 56 minutes, 306 calories. I then did Strong and Sweaty bonus abs, 13 minutes, 57 calories. I had more strength for the plank segments this time. It went pretty well. I can tell my strength is almost all back. I finished off with Barre Amped Stretch and Strength upper stretch and relaxation stretch 28 minutes, 62 calories. Total time was 97 minutes, 425 calories.
I am listing each exercise and the weight . All are 12 reps

Valerie, nice job getting in a hike before the rains moved in. We have had record warm weather. I have the air on today, but tomorrow it cools back down a bit. It was beautiful out today when I went to the store. It has been windy, but that is normal for Oklahoma this time of year. People put out their stuff for big trash day and there was mattresses blown out into the middle of our cul de sac. My trashcan was out in next to the island in the middle. It was blowing hard. I am glad they finally have picked it all up. Papa Murphy's is so good. Once we had them forget something in our order and when we called them they bought it out to our house 14 miles out and brought us a couple of cookie dough tubs as an apology. Maybe it was specific to this particular one, but I thought it was very nice of them.

Carolyn, I have used that STS extended stretch so much. It has been my go to, not to long, stretch till I got the Barre Amped with some shorter stretches for adding to my workouts. I like a longer stretch than most workouts have on them.

Good evening ladies!

Still going strong with my SB Challenge. Week 8 is coming to an end and it is a 12 week challenge. I pretty much have done mostly barre and bounce for these 8 weeks with a few other workouts thrown in here and there. I love what this combination is doing for my physique especially above my knees which has always been a problem area for me. Adding barre in a couple years ago really transformed my legs and now with bouncing it is the creme de la creme for me!

Deb...yes I agree that Dance workout gets you everywhere. My legs really felt it the next day. I like her and plan to add her in more often. We are having some snow this weekend then a potentially heavy snow storm on Tuesday. I am planning a general managers meeting that day so hoping it is not as bad as they are saying.

Diane Sue...I have never used a Bosu. I hear they are great for balance though. I priced them out one time and was surprised how much they cost. I have never done the extended stretch from STS. I try to stretch more but never do. Same thing with yoga, I can never stick with it. As always you amaze me with your workouts! Great job on the steps too. Since I have had a rebounder I have been adding on crazy steps. It will be a while before we put our air on!

Carolyn...I like using hand weights with JS workouts. Sometimes I use my 1.5 ankle weights too. Both seem to add just the amount of tension for me. I do not like to go heavy with ankle weights when doing cardio. I looked at the March rotation and actually thought about doing it for a couple of weeks after I finish SB's challenge.

Valerie...I have never heard of Papa Murphy's . They sound yummy. I would not know what to do with a bosu either. My son has been staying here this week since he is on spring break He has been working at my company filming some training videos Since he now has my treadmill at his house he has been going crazy here so he reluctantly tried out my trampoline and loved it. He is doing a power jump workout as I type this! Lol!

Have a great night all!

I lost some stuff I typed earlier, not sure where it went. anyway, Papa Murphys! such a good idea. we always ordered pizza but delivery produced a soggy cold mess you had to re heat in the oven anyway. Papa Murphy's is set up to take advantage of that.... why not start with a fresh pie and get a good pizza? a fresh pizza. much less costly, and baked fresh in 15 min. I love pizza and luckily it isn't more convenient that it already is. I absolutely love their vegie pizza. I could eat way more of it than I do. I have no idea what geography they cover but I think they are individual franchises so it is in the best interest of the local owner to keep all customers happy.

I did ramped up upper body later today. increased a lot of the weights and did fine. I used weighted gloves for several like 25's plus gloves rather than 30's. was not as tired when I got to biceps so went to 12 (from 10) on all moves and felt like that was no biggie. will stay there for a few times more and then go to 15's. It's funny how it seems like nothing changes for weeks, and then suddenly it moves ( jumps?) upward. I had the same experience with STS a few years ago.. seemed like a flat line and all of a sudden I jumped upward. I am so pleased I am making forward steps now without any shoulder problems.
Deb hope you get some useful information. this has gone on way too long without anything specific.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. The test took 2 hours, start to finish. They took 45 images. Results early next week.

Diane Sue, Great workouts! I keep forgetting about the STS extended stretch. The Simone workout is broken down by cardio, then she does upper body with very light weights, cardio, then lower body, cardio, then core. The lower body reminds me of The Firm #1 floor work.

Valerie, I wish we had a Papa Murphy here! Take out pizza is never as good as when you sit down in the restaurant and have it. This is a good compromise to that. How do you like the Ramped Up Upper Body workout?

Carolyn, Slow & Heavy is a great series. One of my favorites. Funny, I bought it on VHS, hated it, and sold it on Ebay. Years later, it intrigued me again so I bought it on DVD and loved it. Strange how our likes and dislikes change over the years. is this the Jessica Smith series? This one seems like all walking? https://www.amazon.com/Jessica-Smit...585&sr=1-1&keywords=jessica+smith+30+day+plan

Lori, barre work is great for the lower body, if you can stand the pain! LOL. Great that your son tries the workouts that you do...be careful....pretty soon he will take over your jump stuff! :)

A workout, then maybe meeting my friend for lunch.

Take care,

Hi Everyone, just posting an update- We lost our power Wednesday morning at 10 AM during the extreme windstorm in the metro Detroit area. We were lucky not to have any structural damage. We are boarding our cats at the vet and staying in a hotel, probably for the next several days. We don't know when power will be restored and DTE's website isn't giving any updates. Thank God we found a hotel room close to the condo so we can check on it several times a day.
I brought a resistance band and tubing with me so I can do Travel Fit. I might use the hotel fitness center too, but it looks like pretty small and I didn't see much equipment in there. Up to now we've only had our phones for the internet and have been using the cars to keep them charged. I'll catch up on all the posts and post again later today. Hope everyone is doing ok.

Judy

Judy,

that's horrible! At least you found a room near your condo. We had thousands of people lose power here too....we were lucky and didn't.

I hope they restore it soon. Travel Fit is great for hotel use!

Deb

Thanks Deb, I'm glad you didn't lose your power. We were so lucky not to have any damage and to be able to get a hotel room. We decided to get a generator as soon as we can. I've been wanting to do that for years but Chris didn't think it was necessary. This experience changed his mind.
I like Travel Fit, I was surprised how challenging it was the first time I tried it.

Good Morning,
Today I did XTrain All Out Low Impact HiiT. This was 38 minutes, 292 calories.
Deb, that is the J S DVD set that I have. The workouts are all walks but with different intensity levels. Some are steady state, one uses bands, and another uses light weights with the walks. The Major Metabolism Booster DVD has has the strength interval walk with light weights. If you look at the back view of the box you will see a rotation that uses all workouts. There is also a nice chair stretch included. I love these workouts for those times when I don't feel up to working at Cathe's level.

Judy, I'm glad that you are okay even though a power outage can be very difficult. The storms and strong winds looks scary. We have only had milder versions of the same. Last night was wind and hail with heavy rain.

Lori, barre work does make a difference with getting a leaner legs. I am a pear shape and will always be heavier in the lower body. However, the SB workouts and Cathe's lower body workouts have helped, as have metabolic workouts. I am enjoying the March rotation.

Valerie, it is a good feeling to realize that you are getting stronger and can increase the weight choices.

Diane Sue, the Bosu workouts that I've seen on YouTube look pretty challenging.

Enjoy your day.

Judy so sorry you lost power. we had a windstorm last night too and expected to lose but it stayed on. we've been out as long as 4 days but haven't had any long outages in a while now. lots of short ones. that's what happens if there are lots of trees and above the ground power lines. If you don't have regular outages it might take a while to get things up and running. we have them all the time so the procedures are kind of standard "the usual". but when we get snow, everything falls apart. make sure you use antiseptic wipes on all hotel equipment. nobody ever cleans that stuff.
Deb that is a whole lot of pictures!. hopefully someone will be able to give you some sort of explanation for all the troubles you've been having.

Yes, I really like Ramped up. I switch to 'voice only" . still hear the song I hate muffled in the background, but good enough. I like upper body weight workouts generally so whatever is on the top of the pile gets used until I get tired of it. this one moves quickly. I used weighted gloves for 1 arm rows and had no problem. maybe go to 30 lbs next time. pull overs the same. I'd been using lighter ( but not light) weights throughout until yesterday, when I went up on almost every move. like from 10 lbs to 12. lateral raises... I do 5 lbs, hold in place while cathe does high ends. noticeable improvement since I first did this workout. every exercise works for me, and the speed is good. I take a few short breaks to move equipment around but it goes quickly.
I never bought Slow and Heavy. I used Gym Styles, then STS, and then X train. for some reason the HIGH step workouts appealed to me and I bought several and ended up not enjoying them much. I still have them. might try them again. I am also going to try to do a barre workout weekly due to Carolyn and Lori talking about them. I have two or three that came in sets but never used much. I always get sore and thought the meager calorie burn was not worth the pain.

we used to get pizza delivery or take out. you always had to re heat it in the oven. this is much better . I like it TOO much however and have to limit myself. I love pizza!

My knee was a bit achy last night and this morning so I chose a low Impact workout for my cardio. I did Ripped with Hiit Low Impact Hiit both workouts combined 50 minutes, 375 calories, avg. heart rate 129/max 164. I then did Ice Low Impact sweat workout 1 premix skipping the warm up 23 minutes, 148 calories 123/149 heart rate. Total time 73 minutes, 523 calories. I do have that knee get achy once in awhile. I made the mistake of buying Neocell Collagen 2 with naturally occurring hyaluronic, glucosamine and chondroitin acid capsules. They are not working like my usual joint powder from Vibrant Health. I thought I would try to save money till there was another sale offer on what I normally buy. Now my fingers ache, neck hurts and crackles and my knee is starting to have fits. I am going to go to the store next week and get the powder. I even upped the amount from 4 capsules to 6 a day as it says on the bottle. I don't know why nutritional supplements have to be so different from one to the other in quality.

Lori, that is awesome that the barre work and the bounce workouts are really working for you. They both seem like really safe workouts as far as joints as well. I like yoga as long as it is not one of those workouts with a half hour of down dog up dogs to the point where I am pretty much bored to death. I remember having a stopping point on P90X yoga where I knew just how many minutes I did and would skip to the balance work just to avoid doing the entire down dog up dog sequence segment. I have a selection of some pretty active yoga workouts as well as the more basic stretching ones. The only thing is that some of the really active ones feel more like strength and they move fast, so I am not sure that there is much stretching in them.

Judy, I am so sorry that you are without power. I have been there and several days without power is rough. We finally purchased a generator and while my husband was out of country my neighbor helped me get it set up once. The first time I had to wait till they could clear storm damage off the roads so that my son could help get it out of the storage building to the patio. I couldn't lift it on my own. My husband would like to get one of those that automatically comes on when the power goes out. There was no hotel in the town we were living in at the time. I would have had to drive to Oklahoma city for a hotel. Also after the first time I purchased a 4 hour battery back up to keep my devices charged up. More of a just in case they were not fully charged so that they would last longer. Although that goes out too. I went crazy stocking up on flash lights and lot of batteries. We had an aerobic septic system so of course the little power thing on the side of the house stopped running. All in all not pleasant. Hopefully you get power back soon. I honestly cannot imagine how it was without all of our current conveniences. I guess everything did not run on electricity. Even some gas items have electric starts on them. At the time our gas fireplace had a wall switch to turn it on.

Deb, two hours is a long time for a test. I hope it reveals something to help. I purchased Slow and Heavy on VHS too. I bought the dvd and then sold the VHS. I really lucked out at the time because I replaced most of my VHS tapes that I liked a lot on dvd and sold the VHS ones for 80 dollars on Ebay. I went back and put that Body by Simone ton my You tube watch later. I had lost the link when I accidentally put it on my grandson's youtube log in. I will do it one day. Someone else gave me a link to get a free belly fit workout. I started the beginning of it yesterday and it seemed a bit yoga and not much movement breathing stuff with a looking inward sort of focus. I quit and decided to preview and maybe go back to it. I forwarded and did seem some cardio and strength stuff.

Carolyn, not all workouts using the bosu are super intense. The one on Amy Bento Ross Hi Lo Dome is more of a strength balance workout. I love it for the balance work. I want to go back and do the Keli Roberts Fuse off of Bosu Explode which is not super intense but more of a core/ balance workout. Maybe I will fit it in somewhere next week. Tracey Staehle uses one in her Parts series which is nice on the glute camp workout.

Valerie, they had to replace some stuff at one of our electrical power plants here in Oklahoma City when the power went out and my son and daughter both were without power even longer than I was because the plant was right up the street. They switched lines from wood poles out here to what I guess is steel. I keep looking at those high step workouts when I have been going through my holders. If I remember right High Step Advanced used to feel intense. It is funny because some of the workouts that I used to think was so hard do not seem near as hard to me now. It is nice going back to them again.

Good evening ladies...this morning was Sb Total Body Fusion, followed up with her Adv Bounce from her streaming. When I finished I felt like more bouncing so I did Body By Simone Adv Tramp workout #6. This did the trick. 65 mins and 351 calories.

Deb...wow a 2 hour test. Hopefully they figure out what the heck is going on. I love the burn I get from barre! The deeper the better for me. Sometimes when I am deep in the move my legs are shaking uncontrollably!! Haha with Nicholas taking over my jumpsport!

Judy...that really stinks about your loss of power. Several years back we had an ice storm and lost power for several days. I was so cold as it was in the middle of winter. We borrowed my brothers generator and that helped. After everything was all said and done we bought a generator and have never had to use it. I think it has been about 8 years now. But having it gives us great comfort for sure. Hopefully we will never have to use it. Hoping you get power soon.

Valerie...good job on the weight increase. I need to be very careful with latteral raises and very rarely use more that 6lbs. Any more and my shoulder will flare up. When I first started with barre I remember wishing the calorie burn was higher. Then I looked at it more like strength training which depending on the workout, calorie burn is not really high either. Once I got the calorie burn out of my mind I was more focus. Glad I stuck with it.

Carolyn...I love JS! I agree when you need to tone things done a bit she is perfect. Yet at the same time you still get a great workout. I have always had thick legs and barre has really slimmed them and lifted my butt! I can't wait to wear shorts this summer. I always hated shorts. But I fear them no more! :)

Diane Sue...hope your knee is better by the time you read this. Nice you still got a great workout in. Sometimes saving money is not worth it the long run. You hate to have to spend more but you need what makes you pain free. I have certain items I thought I would save a little money on then end up throwing out. You don't know until you try. Every now and then though it does works out. I know EXACTLY what you mean about P90X yoga. It was endless. I too stopped right before the balancing. I bet most people did too.

Have a great night all!

Good morning,

Well the cold spell has returned, it is now 15 degrees outside. We were supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow, but only got a dusting. That at least is good news.

Judy, has your power been restored? A generator is a good idea. If I were to get one, it would be the one that is connected to the gas line and goes on by itself as soon as the power goes out. The nice thing about this is that if you lose power while travelling, you don't have to worry about losing everything in the frig, pipes freezing etc.

Carolyn, thanks for the JS info. I need to go back and look at the boxes like you mentioned.

Valerie, I never used the "voice only" option on Cathe DVD's, didn't realize you could still here the music, even faintly. Gym Styles is a great series....do you have Pure Strength?

Diane Sue, that is too bad that the joint stuff you have is not working...but at least you know of the one that does and can go back to that one. I can see how hard that must have been to set up that generator....that is why I would opt for the one that is connected to the furnace....I know that they are way more expensive though.

Lori, you are doing so great with the barre and bounce workouts! Have the Lunch Ladies gone back to workouts yet?

Agility class this morning then HouseMax for me!

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

The power came back on in the condo late last night. We are going to wait another day to make sure it's stable before we bring the cats home. People are reporting the power going back off so we don't want to take any chances. It's only 14 degrees here right now and still several hundred thousand people without power. I did Travel Fit yesterday at the hotel.

Deb-that sounds like a good kind of generator to have. We are definitely going to have something like that installed as soon as possible.
I also have that JS DVD set and I agree with Carolyn, they are great for days when you don't feel up to Cathe's level. The workouts are fun and can be modified up or down depending on how you feel. I really like that chair stretch too.

Lori-I can't use more than 6 lbs for lateral raises either. I need to get back to doing barre workouts again. I love the results I get when I do them regularly.

Diane Sue-I'm sorry about your knee. I hope it's better today.

Valerie-I'm glad your power stayed on. I agree about nobody ever cleaning the fitness equipment in the hotel gyms. I decided to just workout in the room.

Carolyn- I really like JS's Major Metabolism Booster. I also like her standing ab workouts. Challenging enough, but no dread factor.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday!

Judy
