Good morning,

No workout yesterday, but did have a good time in agility class.

Valerie, good that you have those "go to" workouts that have no dread factor etc. The premixes are really good. Sometimes you just want to change things up a bit. I use one 20 pound DB for pull overs, holding it by the middle bar and lowering/raising it the long way. I find that holding 2 together is very unstable.

Diane Sue, I never could figure out how Cathe's workout manager gets the calorie burn numbers. Is it using an average of what other have entered previously? I would truck my own HRM method before using her numbers. I also find that washing my hair every day is bad for it. Maybe 2-3 times a week is what I do.

Carolyn, those barre workouts may not have a huge calorie burn but they do hit the muscles hard and create a "burn" there for sure.

Lori, So nice that you get to celebrate Madeline's birthday with her and her family. I liked the workout...but her as an instructor would take some getting used to. I can't imagine doing the lower portion with ankle weights!

Will do some type of workout today, maybe PHA from S&S.

Take care,

deb, I like having a few workouts I can stick in the player and 'do" without over thinking. I used to use treadmill /elliptical that way, but the loss of decent TV reception in the workout room is an issue. can't look at the wall and do 45 min on either machine. music absolutely doesn't work for me. as a result I'm doing more cathe workouts than ever.
I want to try a barbell for pullovers first, then two 15's and finally weighted gloves and a 25. DH keeps a loaded barbells so every time I want to use one I have to unload it.
I preview dvds if I have a new one but I can't do a workout without watching something. I used to use Oprah or other light weight TV like cooking shows but right now nothing seems to work. Ellen is on in the 4-5 time slot. too "fluffy"for me. DH is watching some of the Great Courses that he purchased. I can't pay close enough attention to them while exercising. we 've had an long, wet, cold winter.... jan feb and march so far have been pretty unpleasant with few outdoor adventures.
re showers and hair, I purchased a nylon cape to wear when showering so the shampoo doesn't run down my back so much. I'm using different hair coloring now too so the intense itchiness has lessened, but still dry skin itch. it usually is better in summer but my hair is usually twice a week now. we sat in the hot tub two or three times and the skin on the fronts of my shoulders became dry and itchy in spite of preventive lotion.

Carolyn I agree with deb. maybe not a huge calorie burn but if I want to get sore, a barre workout is top of the list followed by mat floor work. I have a hard time keeping them up regularly. every time I try ... after a long time break , I get sore sore sore. this last time I did a limited premix and it wasn't too bad.

Hi Everyone,

Thursday I did Muscle Endurance and Friday I did a Spinerval. Yesterday was a rest day. I'm going to do a total body weight workout twice a week for a couple more weeks then I want to do a round of STS starting with meso 2. I should be done with that by the time the new Fit Tower workouts arrive, and I will be ready for something different. I preordered the DVDs as soon as I saw the email. I am looking forward to the new workouts.

Deb-it's been cold, but sunny here. It's supposed to warm up during the week. I think we are getting rain tomorrow.
I love PHA from S&S. That is a good one!

Lori-That's great that you are visiting Madeline for her birthday! I hope you all had a wonderful time last night.

Diane Sue-I'll have to try MIS for one of my total body workouts. It sounds like a good one.

Valerie- When I do pullovers I use 1 dumbbell. I've gone up to 25, but usually I use 20 lbs.

Carolyn-the farmer's market sounds so nice! I need to find a good one around here.

Hope everyone has a good Sunday!

Judy

Hi Everyone,
Today is a rest day for me. I am feeling the deep burn from yesterday's Barre exercises. I'm going to start the March rotation tomorrow but I'm sure to make some substitutions. It's very leg focused this month.

Valerie, I have a big problem with dry skin all over my body during the winter. My hands are always dry and I have to be very careful with dishwashing liquid. Most of them make me dry and itchy. I use a lot of lotion and body cream. I like to listen to music when I walk on the treadmill for a workout. The music motivates me.

Judy, I did total body weight workouts with the February rotation. They were a nice change, but make for longer sessions. I don't always want to work out for more than an hour. If I am not doing a planned rotation I try to do an upper body, lower body, and total body workout each week.

Waves to everyone and have a great day.

Today was my rest day and family brunch. I have eaten a lot of junk this weekend. I need to get on track and quit baking!! What is the difference between the older Fit Tower and the newer one?

Deb, glad you had a good time at agility class. I read the information on Cathe's about met value and I think there is a basic way of doing met values for different types of workouts. I just know what my usual calorie burn has been over time with different workouts with different devices so I adjust the met value down to where I would be to get the actual burn I am getting from readings. It is always 1 to 2 met value markers lower than Cathe has. It is hard for me to understand the weight workouts that do not burn as many calories heart rate wise, have higher met values that match what an intense cardio workout would have. I am guessing they are referring to extra calories burned later since the metabolism is higher. I keep meaning to research that more as it raises a lot of questions.

Valerie, I used to put my reader and later tablet on the book rack on my treadmill and adjust the print and read while walking on it. At times I would add an audio workout in the back ground and do it at the same time. For awhile I would watch things like the view or some cooking show. I could never get into a movie. My husband watches movies with the Roku when he uses the tread climber and can just go back and start where he left off. I prefer dvd workouts myself. The others are nice for something different and a bit of a change. My skin tends to get much more dy and itchy when the heater is running a lot. This year it has not been as bad. I am sure with you that you have to deal with the heater more.

Judy, do you have the Fit Tower? I cannot remember how many of you have purchased one. I know Lori has one. I would like to get the workouts. That Fit Tower is quite expensive. I think I would really like to have one though. I know I would be able to do more than I do with a chair and the handlebars to my spin bike.

Carolyn, I like hitting everything twice a week if possible so often end up doing upper, lower, and total body workouts. If they are light I don not mind doing 3 total body workouts on alternating days. I usually buy a natural dish soap. A lot of the detergents in the stores are really hard on the hands. I can't use just any hand cream or lotion because I tend to touch my chin and face a lot and I break out in acne and rashes from the lotion. It gets a bit frustrating because my cuticles and fingers will crack if I am not careful. My daughter recommended I use petroleum jelly but I don't like using that stuff on my hands. It doesn't break me out though. I keep trying new natural products looking for something that works. Coconut oil is okay. I bought Kiss my Face Lotion recently and it is not as bad, but still can cause issues. Face cream on my hands works but that is an expensive way to moisturize my hands. I had a friend one time suggest I slather on lotion or cream at night and try wearing gloves. I am not sure if I could sleep with gloves on. Particularly if it was warm.

I'm having good results with Cetaphil moisturizing cream. the stuff in a jar. not costly at Costco. I don't know what is different from the lotion, but this works better for me and it soaks in nicely and seems to have lasting effects. it might be good on my back but I can't reach and so far haven't asked for help with it. wanted to make sure my skin was OK with it over time , and it seems to be good. I have good results generally with Cetaphil products compared to all others .
seems to be good for cuticles and hands, much better than anything else I've tried.

I do all dishwashing etc with a brush and don't get my hands in it. the worst stuff is the junk in commercial rest rooms. feels like I lose an entire layer of skin with each washing.
I did 30 min running on the treadmill, not real fast but uphill. haven't done it for a while but it was OK. planned on something else but found a decent program on Create on the TV and reception was not too bad so went with it.

we have the older fit tower and use it regularly. DH keeps a loaded barbell sitting on it.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did S&S PHA training. One of my favorites from the new series. We went to an obedience match at the club and lets just say it was not so great. :)

Valerie, the Cardio Coach MP3's are great for doing the treadmill, or elliptical. They lead you and before you know it, the workout is over. There are many to choose from with various lengths. Also, there is iTrain workouts, same thing, but they have a lot more. You can get them on your phone and do them that way. Does the Cetaphil moisturizer for your face have SPF in it?

Judy, good workouts! That is great that you are going to start STS again. I fully understand skipping Meso 1.

Carolyn, I forgot that it was the start of a new month...I have to go over and look at the March rotation. The Live workouts have some great total body that are under an hour. If you have Lori's excel spreadsheet you can sort by the time to find those shorter workouts.

Diane Sue, there were many posts on just that question...on the differences in the new vs the old Fit Tower. I didn;t think they were that significant to warrant the purchase, but then again, I am not that into barre work. I used my Tower for weight lifting with a bar. Like Valerie, I keep a loaded bar on the Fit Tower all the time. Easy to reach and change weights etc. Isn't there a special if you buy the new Tower and the new DVD"s? As for calorie burn, it is all too confusing to me! I just take whatever my HRM says. The newer weight workouts like PHA and Giant Sets burn way more calories than a straight weight workout. MFP does not even let you enter time etc if you choose a weight workout....to record weights etc you have to enter it as a cardio workout. I always thought that was strange.

A workout, then I am going to make these Banana, zucchini flax muffins that are supposed to be good for breakfast. I think I got the recipe from Dr Axe....

Take care,

Good morning!

My flight is at 6pm so we have most of the day here before we need to pack up and leave. Madeline is doing well, all things considered. She is very frail and has lost so much weight. Really noticeable from the last time we were here in September. She just came off radiation on her shoulder and will be going for a Pet Scan on Thursday to see if the tumors here have shrunk. She is not a candidate for the traditional Chemo. Her body would never recover from it and if the quality of life is gone what is the point? She is in great spirits and we had lots of laughs this weekend.

Everyone sleeps late around here so I have had plenty of time to wake up, have coffee and workout out. Yesterday I did a SB workout from the challenge then continued on with a lower body band workout which is a compliation I made up from my Cathe workouts. I then did a 10 min upper body band. Total workout was about 60 mins and I felt great. I am a little sore today too. Bands can really get you deep! Going to do a Barre workout today with light cardio.

Diana Sue...i do not use my tower to its full potentional but what I do use it for a lot are for pull ups. This alone makes me happy I have it. Once the new workouts come I will utilze it more. I do not have a barbell any longer but I have a 20lb body bar that I keep on it. When my son moves back though I will have it again. I bought the new dvd's more so for the bootcamp and the barre one. But I will give the other a try since I will have the barbell back. I hear you on the junk food. For me it has been hard to eat healthy when you are at someone else's home. I will back to my healthy eating tomorrow.

Judy...good for you doing STS again. Like you if I would start with meso 2 if I ever did it again. It is unlikely I ever will but I have learned never to say never! Took me 30 seconds after I read the email to order the new workouts!

Deb...I agree with the differences between the new and the old tower. They are very similar. But I never had the old tower so I do not know first hand. The new one is well built and the adjustable bar moves very smoothly. I am very happy with it and glad I made the purchase. I was a little annoyed at first that she could not make the adv dvd's at first but I got over it and the tower has come in handy.

Valerie...my hands are the same way from all the garbage soap at work. Good to know about cetaphill cream. Will try it out. I do not use all the perfumed moisturizes. They smell nice but do not help my dry skin! When I used to use my treadmill or eliptical I always had to be watching something. I can't just listen to music.

Carolyn...as much as I do barre I still get sore. I swear it never gets easier! I do go longer and deeper then when I first started so I have made great strides. Some days my legs a shaking like crazy while in the deep move and I love it! I will check out the March rotation. I never do them but I like to look at them.

Have a great day all!

Deb, I use Cetaphil cream everywhere BUT my face. I first bought it only a few months ago but it quickly became my favorite. I get it in a two jar pack at Costco. it's nice and thick, doesn't drip all over. it has no sunscreen and doesn't smell much at all. so there is Cetaphil cleanser, Lotion and cream.... I use them all.
the only moisturizer I use on my face is at night, Revale coffee berry cream. just a tiny bit. I got it from a dermatology office when I got lasered for my rosacea, but it's an OTC product. my face breaks out from almost all moisturizers. I wash with cetaphil cleaner which doesn't dry it, then a little Revale at night only. during the day, just 15 spf estee lauder make up that I put on while my skin is still damp. that's it. I'm a very cheap date at the cosmetic counter! every time I try "stuff" I get breakouts. my facial skin looks and feels good so if I get a dry spot I'll use a dab of cetaphil cream but generally not on my face. I use cetaphil cream on legs, arms, the parts of my back I can reach, fronts of my shoulders. I use very little soap, mostly just rinse off and keep the water temp moderate. man, it's tough getting old!

my hands are the worst, so I use a long handled scrub brush for pots and pans and scrubbing the sinks, DW for everything else. my skin can't take dish detergents or the caustic soap that's in commercial restrooms. I usually rinse and then sanitizer. I have sanitizer and lotion in every car.

Deb ... I will sound totally stupid here.... I don't understand how a MP3 workout or phone workout works. are you looking at the phone itself?

Lori that is what happened to my friend. the cancer didn't "get" her although it would have, it was the chemo. sorry Madeleine is losing ground.
that is interesting about barre. every time I've done it I got sore. I thought it was just me. no matter what I've been doing, it always feels like I don't exercise at all and it never feels easier.

Today I did Maximum Intensity Strength, 74 minutes, 368 calories. I have not done this one in years. I am tired, so I think I am calling it a day for workouts. I hardly slept last night and need to go to the store and get my cashew butter chicken stew on the stove for when my granddaughter comes over later. I should do some cleaning.
Since I have not done this workout in so long I kept most of the weights at Cathe's

Judy, I am glad to know that you like your Fit Tower. When I look at pictures the new one does not really look too much different.

Valerie, I had to put antibiotic cream on the middle of my back where I could not reach after my daughter removes a skin cancer. I took a dowl stick and attached a sponge with a rubber band and used it to smear the ointment on. I bought some Cetaphil face lotion for redness but it broke me out the first day I used it. It is sitting in the cabinet. I can use the Tarte BB cream tinted base and it does not break me out and has SPF 40, I use it mostly during summer and when I am going to be outside. It moisturizes too.

Deb, yes, I have found that the workouts like PHA and Giant sets do burn quite a bit more calories. I always put all of my workouts into the cardio section of my fitness pal. It is a bit annoying that they do it that way. I also use My Net Diary and iyou can just put your workout in weights or cardio, yoga and do the calories and times for custom workouts. It saves them for you so they are always there to pull back up just like MFP. Each one has certain features I like. I am sorry that obedience class did not go well.

Lori, I go on vacation or to visit family with resolve to make good choices and it never works. Someone is buying pizza or making their special dishes that I feel obligated to enjoy. I have never had a place to put the barbell's other than on the floor. I guess the tower is sturdy enough for a really heavy barbell?

Today I did RWH Lift It HiiT It Legs. I like this workout but it leaves me spent. I matched Cathe's weight on most moves but I did not go heavier than 20# dumbbells.

I have the original tower and I plan to use that one. I read the posts that compare the two and I don't see much difference. The holes on the side are numbered on the Fit Tower which would make adjustments easier. I always count on each side when I adjust the bar.

I use natural dish detergents and the Cetaphil lotion. I haven't tried the cream yet.

Have a good day.

Valerie, mp3 are audio only....you download to your phone or iPod, and listen to the workout (with ear buds or not depending on if you like them or where you are doing the workout).

Here is the link to the Cardio Coach workouts...http://www.cardiocoach.com/

They can be used with almost any cardio piece of equipment...some have inclines some do not. They vary in length, and focus. The description shows the time, and what the workout is comprised of. For example this link shows workout 1..... http://www.cardiocoach.com/workouts_v1.html

I have all except #8...and use exclusively with the treadmill.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Ripped w/HIIT Low Impact HIIT 2 (30 minutes -178 calories) and today I did S&S Ramped Up Upper Body (46 minutes 200 Calories).

Lori, I hope your flight and return home was uneventful. Are you working today? So sad about Madeline, but at least her spirits are up.

Valerie, the Cetaphil sounds like it is perfect for you. I may try the it as a body moisturizer, my legs get very dry, especially in winter.

Diane Sue, I think the newer Fit Tower may be more sturdier? There was a lot about it when it came out. I keep my BB loaded to about 35 and always keep it on the Fit Tower.

Carolyn, Lift It Hit It Legs is a really tough one. I have it on the rotation this week but was toying around with subbing one the lower body Live workouts. You are right...I forgot about having to "count the holes" on the original Fit Tower to make sure the bar was even...LOL I actually have a paper taped to the wall with the # that corresponds to what I am using it for.

Class this morning.....

Take care,

Deb, I also did Ramped Up Upper Body today. My total time was 55 minutes and calories burned was 183.

No special plans for today. Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Internet and phone service went out yesterday mid day. came back up sometime early this morning. Car hit a pole or something. inconvenient but reminds how dependent on it we've become.
Deb, took a very brief look yesterday but then service went out. I need visuals rather than audio only but thanks for posting for me. I've never been very motivated by music. regardless I will listen to the samples and think about whether it would work for me occasionally. I ran outside for decades and never used music. We're all put together differently!
I never saw Cetaphil cream until Costco a short time ago. no fragrance. it seems to last so I don't need to reapply all the time. If Costco carries the full line.... it must work for a lot of people. it is not expensive either. diane sue. the skin on my face is completely different than the rest of me. I use only Revale on my face. no other cream or I get breakouts.

Did TBM again yesterday. it's starting to actually feel easy. I haven't increased weight past Cathe's, just squeeze in more reps. yesterday afternoon was a mess and ended up in the 4-5 time slot again.

when we visit family we drive our camper. helps to avoid most bad food choices. DH suffers too, as he is always hungry and can't skip meals like they do. nobody eats breakfast , fruits, vegetables. most don't drink any coffee. they drink a lot of beer. DH doesn't drink at all, and I don't like beer so there are plenty of areas of unhappiness. I wish they were better cooks! they probably think the same about us when they come here.

Valerie,

The Cardio Coach workouts are instructional, Coach Sean talks you through the workout, tells what to do. Good to listen to the samples before purchasing There are instrumental versions available....but most people get the one with "coaching"

Today I pulled out Bosu Explode and did Mindy Mylrea Burst, 61 minutes, 437 calories. This is another one that I have to push through. I try to follow Mindy who does the extreme version. There is an advanced exerciser and a modifier. These workouts are great cross trainers. I used a 5# soft med ball. They use a 4#, but I do not have that weight. Lots of balance work. Even the male advanced exerciser is bobbling around trying to move quickly on the bosu passing the med ball under his legs as he does the knee raises. I like it because these workouts are a change and very challenging. The one problem I have is with the one that uses two bosu trainers at once. I always ended up with my high step with 3 risers and my bosu and going from one to the other that way. I do have the sling shot though that I purchased when I got the set. I was going to read the blogs and forums on the site but my internet went out and I gave up and just went on to workout.. There is excellent core work in these as well. After I finished with Bosu Explode I did Tracey Staehle's Core Blast, med ball, bosu with med ball, and floor segment 1 and 2 planks, 23 minutes, 106 calories. I used an 8# medicine ball for this one. Total time was 84 minutes and calories burned 106. Tomorrow will be kickboxing.

Carolyn, I am always feeling pretty well worked with the Ripped with Hiit workouts. I can do both on the Low Impact but the rest, I often wonder about doing the double workouts and extreme premixes. Unless it is just weights. I have done the lower body one without the plyometric moves before. Nice work on Ramped Up Upper. I think I burned a few more calories on it the last time at over 200, but I had just finished a Susan Chung workout and my metabolism was already revved. It seems if I do cardio first weights will burn more. I really like Ramped Up. Last week I did the upper of Total Body and I am certain I now like Ramped Up better.

Deb, I did not know cardio coach had music only versions to download. I don't think that I would care for that. If I was going to do that I would just download Amazon Prime workout music or play something I like. I still have my cardio coach workouts. I had thought I gave them to my daughter when she took my treadmill. I guess I just gave her Walking strong and walking stronger, Tracey Staehle ( I used to like her dvds for the treadmill) , I also had some I fit workouts that I had purchased, one was a video tape and you walked through Red Rock. I gave my daughter my itrain workouts too. I suppose I could have used them on the Tread Climber. I did a workout challenge group on Cardio Coach once when I did not have a treadmill and I used the step and made up my own moves getting my heart rate up at certain points and taking it back down according to the workouts. It was fun that way for awhile.

Valerie, I usually have not had to purchase Cetaphil. My daughter has given me jars of the cream from her office. My skin is prone to acne along with the rashes and irritated burning patches if I am not careful. I can take the face creams that do not work and use them somewhere else on myself. Even my neck. The natural products without all of the weird additives seem to work well for me so far. I have found that if I get a product that has shea butter in it near the top of the ingredient list, I will almost always break out. I am learning how to read the labels carefully. Surprisingly the Retin A is working for me so far. I have been back to using it for several weeks now. This time I put on moisturizer first, wait 30 minutes and then apply the retin A. Also if I see a bit of reddening I skip a day or two. So, maybe I can use it after all. I always liked Cereve products quite a lot. When I purchased the Cetaphil redness reducing face cream, I had meant to get Cereve night cream to avoid the sunscreen which irritates my skin. The bottles looked a lot alike and there was a woman restocking in Walmart in front of the skin creams talking to me. I think I just grabbed the wrong one to get out of the way and then decided to give it a try.
We do not eat breakfast but I always remember when family is visiting to make them breakfast. My immediate family always has the coffee pot going and generally when we have a meal there is a veggie tray of sorts and someone brings containers of fruits and berries. Family away from here is another story though. Way too much soda. Not many seem to carry around a beer though.

Good morning,

Carolyn, you must have done the Ab workout with S&S Ramped Up Upper Body. I have yet to do the ab workout from this series. I have not even previewed it.

Valerie, I will check out the Cetaphil cream at B J's ( our version of Costco). Sorry the Cardio Coach was not for you. I could not do the treadmill without something like that. I don't have the TV down there hooked up to any type of cable, antenna etc. It is strictly for doing workouts. I guess if there was something to watch on YouTube I could do that. But then I would have to just do plain old walking/jogging, which is boring for me.

Diane Sue, great workouts! I can't imagine using 2 Bosu's.. Agree on Cardio Coach instrumental only....not sure why anyone would pay for that. I would rather listen to the radio...LOL. I like iTrain and have a bunch of those, but sometimes Grace Lazenby is a little tough for me. I have to go a lot slower than she recommends.

A workout, then working this afternoon and an 8:00 club board meeting tonight...(ugh)...

Take care,
